Called today what must have been the busiest day ever. Had to queue for ages but the coffee tea cakes and flapjack perfect. My reason for five stars were for the young lady behind the counter working alone and so hard (others working behind the scenes preparing and serving orders ) but she smiled and was so courteous she deserved a medal. Only downside at 2.30 running out of items such as scones bacon sandwiches etc but maybe they did not expect the number of customers . Well done

A conveniently located cafe to visit either at the end or beginning of a walk around Buttermere Lake. Friendly staff and good coffee. We had a generous sized slice of Caramel Shortbread and it was delicious. There was a good choice of other scones, cakes and tray bakes, including Gluten Free. Lunches were also available. There were tables outside for people with dogs.

Called in for a cup of tea and a cake. Nice pot of tea, but the scones my wife and I had were very poor. I would guess they had been frozen and defrosted in a microwave, a shame because they looked good and were reasonably priced. Maybe a different choice would have been more successful? I'm not sure that having to indicate that I didn't want to leave a tip should be necessary on a self service situation?

Before and after we walked round Buttermere Lake, we had coffees and cakes at Croft Cafe. The staff were friendly and helpful and, as I told them at the time, their fruit scones were the lightest and tastiest I have had anywhere. The cakes looked equally good and there was a good range of lunch fare which I wish we had stayed for instead of where we ended up.

A good stop for coffee and a cake, especially as there are no other cafes for miles. Next to the car park and a ten minute walk from the lake. Only issue was the the 2 lines of people waiting to use the 2 toilets inside, because the council charges 50p for the public ones. Sitting viewing a line of people waiting for the toilet is not my preferred ambience! Luckily the weather was reasonable so we sat outside.

I ordered coffee, cake and a coke. I asked for a glass with my can of coke. No, we don't give glasses with cans of drink. I sat down with two ladies with canned drinks and glasses, on the next table was someone with a can of coke and a glass. Later I asked if I could come back later to buy sandwiches to take away, yes, of course. I asked how long they were open. They said 5pm I came back at 20 past four and asked for sandwiches. No, the kitchen is closed. I was confused and said I'd asked earlier and told they close at 5pm so I thought 40 minutes before would be ok. The lady I had asked came and said I hadn't asked how long the kitchen was open, I said no, but I'd asked to order sandwiches so she could have added the info that I had to order before 4pm or whenever the kitchen closes. Next time I'm there I'll go to the other tea room.

Croft house farm cafe is a firm favourite when we visit Buttermere, which sadly isn’t very often as we live abroad. We usually call in before setting off walking around the lake and more often than not call in a second time later in the day. There’s always a warm welcome and plenty of choice of hot or cold drinks. The Americano was perfect! Selecting a cake is quite difficult as they all look very appetizing! Prices are very reasonable. Both indoor and outdoor seating is available. Well worth visiting.

Most recently stopped in here for lunch - a ham and cheese panini and a cappuccino. Nice food and nice coffee, though the wait for food was quite long. Have to say though that this place is worthy than more than 5* after the hospitality of the staff saved my friends and I of a situation last year where we were wet and cold after swimming the length of Crummock but our support vehicle with our warm clothes hadn’t arrived… they let us stay warm in the cafe and order hot food and drinks despite us not having any way to pay while we awaited our support (our payment cards were in the support car). Honestly went above and beyond to help us all and I’ll always be grateful 🙏

Lovely cafe to look at, but am sorry to say that the Scones were truly dreadful, not fresh and very crumbly. The Flat White coffee was mainly milk, not how a flat white should be made and was so pale and weak it was undrinkable. Only plus was it was dog friendly.

Great cafe with lovely cakes. Really good for gluten free options. The GF desserts are wrapped up in cling film on a second shelf and separate server to prevent cross contamination. I am very sensitive coeliac and I had no issues. One of the best gf carrot cake I’ve ever had. Only thing that would make it better is if the Gf options were on a top shelf.

Lovely cafe , called in for a sandwich and coffee after a walk around the lake. Been to Buttermere a few times but never called in and always headed for next door.cafe. After reading the reviews i knew to wait to be seated. This is a lovely cafe , great food and coffee and i sat and watched people just walk in and ignore signs to wait until they had their food and drinks. It's ignorant people just thinking they can do as they please , brought a dog in and the couple and their dog took over a table for four. Was just wrong and i sat and watched really selfish people. People who complain about this cafe need to seriously look at themselves. Lovely cafe and sanwiches were gorgeous really fresh. Will be back again , and will wait to be seated its not hard.

I don’t mind being directed to a table , but I expected better food. Home made spiced lentil soup sounded good . But it tasted of lentils( fair enough) and cayenne pepper . No other spices, no vegetables . The toilet facilities have been mentioned in other reviews , .There is a four digit code for the keypad on the door ( which you are given on the printed receipt) I found it very difficult to operate. The owners are making a lot of money with little regard for their customers

Very handy little cafe with excellent food and service. They provide free hot water top ups for tea drinkers. One of the better ideas they have is to stop people jumping the queue to bag a table. People can only sit down after they’ve ordered so there will be a table for you when you get your food. The car park is for customers while they are in the cafe so it’s more likely to have space.

The ice creams the kids had were rated excellent. It was good to have plant based milk alternatives & a good option for teas & coffee. The let down was the scones (with jam & cream at £4.50 a pop) - the scones were definitely delicious on the day they were made but that was at least 2 days before we had them! Stale scones that were now very dry were not a treat. Such a shame as the place was heaving! If they aren’t fresh - take them off the menu is my suggestion!

Lovely cafe in a great location and suitable for coeliacs. Gluten free bread was available and the staff team had a good knowledge of cross contamination. They made a bacon sandwich with fresh tongs, separate butter spread and brought it out separately with blue gloves. The young lady who took our order wrote "very important" and then personally made it herself. They also had all their gluten free cakes covered over to avoid crumbs of gluten from other cakes dropping on them. While it was busy we weren't made to feel like it was an inconvenience at all. As a silent coeliac with non obvious symptoms, I felt confident I could trust them. They had three gluten free cakes too, and the coffee cake was so good and you wouldn’t know it was gluten free.

We visited the Croft House Farm Cafe for a drink and a scone after a walk around Buttermere. Housed in what a appears to be a fairly new building the process for ordering was a little confusing as there was a "please wait to be seated sign" behind the counter although people were queuing at the counter to order. I joined the queue and spied what appeared to be homemade scones in the counter. I duly ordered but was very disappointed to find that the scones were pretty dry and , I'm guessing, probably hadn't been baked that day. Disappointing given that we paid £2.70 or £2.80 for a scone with butter. In retrospect, I should have spoken to the person in charge.

We visited this cafe today 3/12/21. Ordered soup which came quickly. It was supposed to be tomato soup. It was not soup at all, it was canned tomatoes mashed up to look like soup. We had a couple of spoonfuls and left the rest. The nicest thing about that dish was the half bread roll that came with it. It was definately NOT proper soup. We then ordered scones because we were hungry, they came and was so dry and stale, certainly not made that day, these were also left. The whole experience of the food there is diabolical. I make home made tomato soup and I know this came out of a can. AVOID THE ;SOUP.

I entered the cafe on my own at 13.40 on a rainy Wednesday 24th November and found it roughly one third full. I placed my bag on a table for 4 as I needed to do some work during lunch. A lady told me not to sit there but to sit on a smaller table. As I needed additional space to do my work during lunch i indicated that I did not want to compromise. I pointed out that it was 13.40 and that the cafe was only one third full, so why did I have to sit on a smaller table. The lady indicated that they were the only cafe open in Buttermere that day and that it was lunch service. I understand the need to keep space for additional customers but found the intervention by the lady very unhelpful given there was plenty of space and it was "late lunch"This didactic treatment of your customers is not an appealing side of your service, I thought I had slipped through a wormhole in space and was in Stalinist Russia. I hope you review your over zealous placing of your customers into the smallest possible space and enjoy an increase in Happy Customers.

Great setting, very convenient for walks in the area. Really nicely done out inside and even more improvements made over the last year. Great outdoor area also. Been going here for many years for drinks, lunches and treats. Had good experiences and not so good experiences over the years but no big deal. I used to be frustrated by the opening hours but then I came to understand that most of the people that work here can't afford to live in the locality and have to travel home on public transport, so the opening hours are very much based on that. However I was here in the summer - a blistering hot day, was really in need of a drink and sit down. It was almost an hour before the advertised closing time but they were already closing, had closed the cash register and I couldn't buy a can of pop (minimum charge for card transactions)...and they were really off with me. Happened another day - half an hour before closing. They had a flurry of new customers through the door. I waited 10 mins to be served only to be told I was too late.......... Woman behind me commented on closing time and got a rude retort. Yes, they were probably tired and hot too, yes covid has made it all very unpleasant for everyone and especially at work. But actually, reflecting on previous visits, and perhaps depending on who serves you....they just seem really irritated by customers which is really quite bizarre!

We had walked stopping Buttermere Lake and had planned to get to Scale Force waterfall but decided to stop to get ourselves a drink and something to eat. Very busy cafe with take away option only, plenty of outside seating, so this wasn’t a problem. We both went for tuna mayo with local cheese (which I have never come across) and they were some made and brought out. Very poorly organised, there wasn't enough staff serving and the queue was ridiculously long. I ordered a gluten free ham sandwich and when it arrived .... 2 slices of the worst GF bread I've ever had, with no butter and just ham placed in the middle. The bread was so dry, I nearly choked trying to eat it. I had to ask for some butter and when it arrived it had been taken straight out of the freezer so it took ages to soften enough for me to spread it. Overall, very disappointed.

I am also the first for safety and rules, but these needs to be explained or sign posted, we are not mind readers. Also the exit was literally right on top of where a couple were seated trying to enjoy their coffee. My son stopped here with his fellow scouts after and arduous walk in terrible conditions. He said it was a lovely place. Warm and welcoming with a real fire and lovely warm food. Just what they needed to recover, refuel and warm up. Unfortunately my son also managed to leave his 1 week old iphone in the cafe, something he didn't realise until the cafe was shut. They were all returning to London early the following morning so didn't have the chance to go back to the cafe and pick it up. A call to Alison at the cafe soon sorted the problem out. After she made the appropriate checks she posted the phone back to us quickly, safely and securely, trusting me to re-pay her costs (which I did). She was so friendly, helpful and understanding. I just can't imagine the same thing happening in London. I would really like to visit the cafe myself to say thank you but to also enjoy the warmth and the food that my son so much enjoyed.

I called into the Croft Cafe to get change by buying coffees , I saw the sign on the counter , please do not ask for change for car park which I completely understood so I said I will order two lots of two coffees to get enough change , the gentleman said if you want to do that I will give you two and you will have to go to the back of the very long queue to get two more !!!!!! How absolutely stupid !!!! Just being totally awkward . Two screaming little ones , no parking outside of carpark as very busy and a very awkward person serving !!!!! We were going to return for a meal for six of us but no chance !!

Lovely little tea room, warm and modern with friendly staff. The place is having some work dne at the moment but it wasn't an issue. The new part looks classy and stylish for this little place. Well done it looks brilliant and the food was tasty - we will be back.

We stopped here for morning coffee before our walk (good quality) and also for bite to eat after our walk. The warm quiche and salad hit the spot! Reasonably priced and a real warm welcome from the staff. We were also told to pop back to the counter if we wanted our teapot topped up which was most welcome. Our favourite cafe so far in our tour of The Lakes!

This is a good clean coffee house and just the think for a well earned break whilst walking around the lake of Buttermere. The all butter (a very appropriate name here) flapjacks were delicious too.

Called in for a pot of tea and also had the most delicious vegan, gluten free, flapjack... absolutely heavenly (I am not vegan, but the gluten free bit is essential) and it even had petals & chocolate on it, too! Really good pot of tea and offered hot water top ups. Great cafe, lovely friendly staff.

Makes a great change for the girl serving to say "if you need more water in the teapot just bring it back". So I poured my first cup then got the pot topped up.

Prior to and after a walk around Buttermere we stopped at the Croft House Farm Cafe, the welcome and service was first rate. The Welsh owner was very friendly and approachable. The food and service was excellent. The prices were not a rip off and the quality of the produce was first rate. If we lived in the area this would be a regular haunt.

Called in after a walk along the lake shore. Nice menu, we had soup and rolls followed by one of their delicious bakes. When we declined tea or coffee we were offered a glass of water which was a nice thought and we accepted. The soup was very good as were the bakes. The service was prompt and friendly. Value excellent. Well worth a visit.

One of the best pub Sunday lunches we've had in several years. The meat was succulent - and if you can't choose beef or port you can have half and half. The potatoes were crunchily roasted with soft interior. The Yorkshire puddings seemed a step above most pub versions being neither greasy nor, like so many places, perfect roundels straight from a freezer. There wasn't much green veg but the kale - normally not something I like - was salty and well prepared. Great with the beautifully prepared red cabbage. Big shared portion of cauliflower cheese included too, and - on request - extra gravy and really tangy horseradish. Frankly not much to criticise here and the desserts were brilliant too. We had heard someone say that the change of ownership a week or so back had caused a drop in standards but it's hard to believe that it was ever much better than this. Highly recommended.

We ate here on a Saturday night, and it was great. The staff were very friendly. Although the menu was quite small the quality was excellent and well presented. We all thoroughly enjoyed our meals and the atmosphere of the Mortal Man

Came in to see a friend and left with a warm contented feeling, the place is warm and cozy and very friendly, but spacious enough to not be overbearing. The food is excellent and it has to be the best burger on the island hands down, it’s huge, full of flavour and seriously tasty, highly recommend the village inn
