The beautiful Neo Byzantine style Criterion Restaurant with its marble pillars, and floors and gold tiled ceiling would see us on many occasions enjoying a pre-theatre lunch prior to a matinee at the Criterion Theatre next door, I guess it is fair to say that it wasn't an all time favourite with regards to the actual meal, but it had to be amongst one of the top lavish restaurants we'd been to in London. So it was sad when we went to see A Comedy about a Bank Robbery at the Criterion Theatre and thought we would have a lunch at the Criterion first to see that sadly it no longer exists - instead it is now i The Savini at Criterion This Italian restaurant is almost but not quite as it was, carpets instead of marble and the food is alright but very expensive. Somehow the restaurant has lost its sense of history and apart from it still presenting a lavish interior, its just not the same. In a way it has nothing to do with the food, The Criterion, as I have said wasn't top of my list for fantastic meals, but then neither is the Savini , the Criterion was expensive but then so is the Saviini, In a way I can understand the high pricing as the rent must be astronomical but the menu didn't do all that much for me, I think I had the seafood pasta (as we ate out every day unless the meal was exceptional I honestly can't remember all the choices I made) I decided to forgo the wine as it was quite expensive deciding instead to have one at the theatre or at one of the pubs later. I hope the heart comes back into this glorious building one day.

3 of us visited for breakfast. They open at 8am. We'd been seen standing outside from 07:50. After knocking on the door at 8, we got in around 08:04. Have visited in the past when it was in its heydey, thankfully the decor is still beautiful, things have gone way south for the food though. The eggs benedict was served at a decidedly tepid temperature with an awful watery hollandaise. The English breakfast was very sad, it actually looked like it had been frozen and then thawed out again. We did tell them what we thought and got a free round of coffees. We thought £9 for a tea, £5.25 for a latte and £6.25 for an orange juice rather excessive. An intriguing box arrived at the end, but we were disappointed to find it only contained some tiny stale pastries. £90.84 for breakfast for 3. We left feeling like we'd just been mugged.

Savini was something else. Walking around Piccadilly you don't expect to find a true luxury restaurant among all the tourist attractions and fanfare. We sort of just "walked in" not knowing what was inside, and were impressed with the level of luxury and attention to detail at this location. Savini feels like it belongs inside a luxury hotel, rather than just off the street. I ordered the chicken, which was exquisite. Our waiter was beyond attentive, and anticipated our every need during our short lunch. We had dessert, and as it turns out, Savini has it's own brand of sweets (see pic). These cookies were delicious, and had to take some home. Definitely a place to try if you're looking for a quiet, luxury experience away from the noise of Piccadilly. A dress code is not enforced, but we felt a bit off in our "tourist" attire.

Some of the other diners did comment that I'd been luckier with my choices as their set menu was rather bland - I definitely enjoyed mine, and the charming willingness and inventiveness of the Maitre D and chef to accommodate my allergies. The prosciutto was delicious and such a generous portion that I was able to share with my envious friends. The lamb was perfectly cooked and it's always a treat to have jerusalem artichokes. My wife and I were at Picadilly Circus at about 9:30 in the evening and were looking for a place to stop and have a cappucino. After three places that couldn't make it for one reason or another, I spotted Savini next to the Criterion Theater. It said Criterion Restaurant on the building but we later discovered it was Savini, a newer Italian restaurant in the older building. We just had a drink and a cappucino so I can't speak to the food. The service was impeccable and attentive. The atmosphere was relaxed, with smooth jazz playing, and the elegant interior, built during the glory days of the empire, was worth seeing. Savini is a good alternative to the loud and bustling pubs in the area. It was very expensive however, for what we had, ($20 whisky with soda) which is why I rate 4 out of 5.

We stopped by Savini's about 9.30pm on a Saturday evening for cocktails/drinks after a meal in Covent Garden. It's a beautiful Byzantine decorated venue, with amazing gold ceilings and sparkling chandeliers. The bar seats were comfortable (we couldn't get one of the very homely looking tables and armchairs available to those just having drinks), and the barmen were experts in their cocktail and drink knowledge - even telling us the history behind the Negrino Cocktails. The HOT CHOCOLATE drink is divine - like pure melted liquid chocolate, and came with a beautifully presented slim box of cookies to accompany it. We enjoyed Jack Daniels 24, Kir Royal, Dry Martini's and Negrini's all made fresh in front of us. Thoroughly recommend.

I have eaten here numerous times over the years, but this is my first time since the premises was taken over by the Savini group.First the good:The main dining hall is impressive and the food was good, nothing really to fault here. Prices are reasonable given the quality of establishment and location. The bad:After our waiter took our order and walked off we waited for our drinks...and waited. Our food arrived and we asked if we could have our drinks...we gave our order again. Then, as we were almost finished with our meal we were brought a breadbasket. When up in town for the sales, we would regularly lunch here in the past.We have had some superb lunches here in the past , fond memories.Excited to be back we had a quick look at the menu outside, noted the options for pizza , burgers which were ideal for our son.Once inside, greeted, seated, no offer to take our coats,a look at the menu again, no mention of pizza , burgers, only fine dining.Upon asking the waiter, ah you need the other menu, one moment.Reading reviews upon returning home, this seems to be the routine here, lure you in and then show you the fancier, more expensive option, unless you have the nerve to ask!We all opted for the burgers, which were slow in coming, but when they did appear they were ok , if a little dull and dry.Service was ok, would agree with earlier comments that the staff have an air about them ,that they would really prefer to be somewhere else.Yes it was eyewateringly expensive, I have noticed the comments re the cups of tea at £9 a pop.We were charged £4.50 for a glass of cold milk, no doubt Savini will justify this by the distance from Piccadilly to a Cow?We don't mind paying top money for good food and pleasant efficient service but this is neither. Still a glorious way of escaping the crowds, superb decor and surroundings, although the toilets are tatty. What has happened to the delights that used to be on the menu?We will not be returning

The wine list is eye wateringly expensive for most of the wines - choose with care. And sadly the food was decidedly average. Not bad enough to send back but average enough to think what a lot of money for so very little. Side vegetables were dried out, steak underdone and bland amongst other things.

The marble and mosaic walls and ceiling is actually worth the visit. But unless you are starving, settle for a nice glass of wine, champagne, prosecco or coffee. Or afternoon tea. We started our meal with mojito. Not a good choice, as it was watery and rather tasteless. Then we went for the beef. The meat itself was good, but for almost 30 £ that is the least you should expect. The angus beef came with artichokes and fried onion rings. I didnt really care for the onion rings, but swapping them for veggies was not possible. So that had to be made as an extra order. The fried, seasonal veggies inclueded canned-look-a-like mushrooms, totally overcooked tomatoes to the point of mash, and potatoes that had probably been around for a while, undercooked brussel sprouts and over cooked broccoli. I tend to judge a restaurant by the sauce. And the veal juice with pepper was just dull. We skipped dessert and went for a double espresso. Next time we’ ll stick to prosecco...or afternoon tea...

You must do this and it is quite expensive, yet it's something to experience...once. The place is magnificent and very elegant. We had high tea, which does take a few hours to enjoy. We were served two separate pots of our own selected tea and towers of petit fours, sandwiches, macaroons, tea cakes and small bites of dessert. We had a most enjoyable time and intend to do it again upon our return. You feel like royalty and are treated as such as you leisurely enjoy your tea and delectables.

I went to Savini at the Criterion for a family birthday celebration after a theatre visit. The restaurant has been restored and looked beautiful ,sadly the food and service were poor. The food was expensive even for a central London restaurant and it was of poor quality. There were plenty of waiters working but we had to ask for side plates for our bread rolls, the wrong knives were delivered for our food and two of our three main courses arrived cold so had to be sent back. This restaurant appears quite chaotic at times. I'd advise people to look elsewhere for a better value, tastier lunch or evening meal.

As a traveler and not a tourist I always love to discover a new country experiencing places and lifestyle, walking as crazy, tasting local products, meeting people and talking the local language. So it was a must for me beeing in London try to learn more about the ceremony and the proper terminology for the famous English tea. After an almost day walking i was attracted by one of London’s most historic and iconic places : the Criterion . This Restaurant with gold mosaic ceiling and other luscious features inspired by exotic corners of the globe, it offers a rare window on a long-gone imperial world. Despite of what I thought afternoon tea is typically a social affair intended to help fill the gap between lunch and dinner, so what I had at Savini 's was a cream tea , a variation of afternoon tea that includes scones, cream, jam, and tea of course. I had enjoyed a leisurely pace! ....I suggest to take off the black and white photographs on the walls, they don't have nothing to do with the Criterion's atmosphere and interiors designer. The staff is mostly italians and ,as we know, Italians do it better

The place is beautiful and you really do get first class service on white table cloths. Food is expensive, even if you are on a deal.Quality good though but careful with the wine list.

My daughter & I were in London for medical reasons - wanted an early supper & needed someone who could cater for all her allergies. We were tired & a little exhausted of the travelling around London - entered the restaurant & straight away the manager put us at ease - he listened to what she could eat & created a dish from those ingredients I had a dish off the main menu. We stayed for desert & had a wonderful relaxing but attentive service & food.

The food was very good, the staff friendly and decor in the restaurant lovely in an Art Deco way. The service was a bit slow and the toilets could do with a redecoration but these were minor points and the quality of the food and friendliness of the staff outweighed this by a long way.The theatre menu is £29 for 2 courses available between 1700 and 1900 and saves around £10 on the standard prices

I first visited the criterion restaurant 3 years ago for a family meal on Boxing Day and the food and service was excellent. Today had lunch with friends and the experience was sadly disappointing. The space and architecture are wonderful (but do they need the huge photos on the wall which are not in keeping with the belle epoch interior). My starter comprised slices of unripe hard tomato, avocado and mozzarella with no dressing. There is more to cooking than assembly! My main course consisted of a bland chicken breast as tasteless as a weight watchers chicken dinner in a gloopy yellow sauce with tell tale wrinkles on top from the heater. The cod was placed on paper which was dripping with grease. The cocktails were fine as was the coffee. £65 each for 2 course lunch one cocktail each and the cheapest bottle of wine (£28). I suppose you pay for the setting but with a little more effort on the food front it could have been a truly memorable lunch.

Beautiful place but terrible service, horrendously expensive and untidy toilets. It took ages for our order to be served. The staff seemed bored and indifferent. The toilets were untidy and messy. The prices were horrendous. They must have the most expensive cocktails in all of London! The place was practically empty at 19:00 on a Monday. Not surprised.

A family day out in London before Christmas to treat ourselves. Let’s kick it off with breakfast at The Criterion, big mistake! If you are going to charge £25 for breakfast you have to make it a decent experience. Your staff really need to know what Strawberries are, what Bucks Fizz is, how to cook eggs and what a hash brown is.The Criterion is a beautiful dining room let down by the service and the cooking, which was poor, and tepid.

Friday evening late December and we dropped in - 4 of us - and no trouble getting a table. As the rest of Soho was packed full we should have been warned!Marks out of 10.Service, at best 2. Nice people but inept at attending to the basics of good table service.Food. 3 steak tartare starter was ok but its difficult to get it wrong, veal cheeks poor and tasteless. The main courses packed any merit - and sea food risotto was a bowl of flavourless rice with a few shreds of shell fish. The wienerschnitzel was frankly a joke - a huge plate covering slab with a bone attached - awful.Deserts 3 no refinement, dull presentation. We have eaten a few times in Savinis in Milán - they should be ashamed to lend their name to this.

Beautiful room but staffed by waiters who can’t speak basic English. I’m very tolerant of such things but this was ridiculous. Very mediocre food. Some were charming but others were charmless.I really wouldn’t waste an evening here again when the whole of London awaits outside. Be cautious...a very weird and not pleasant dining experience.

Popped in without booking for a quick bite - pizza chips and wine. Beautiful surroundings felt really luxurious. Food very good quality and value for money. Service from 2 / 3 staff was excellent. Young female waiter unattentive lack of attention and not service orientated. Everything else was great and we wont let 1 person ruin the experience. Highly recommend just be clear about your needs Would definitely return

Popped in for a cup of tea and a sit down. Beautiful restaurant, very elegant and luxurious. Cup of tea on the menu stares £9 which took our breath away but it is actually a pot which serves 2 or 3 and it comes with a box of the most delightful crisp yummy biscuits. Right in the centre of Piccadilly Circus its a bit of olde world charm and sophistication.

This place is a bit on the pricey side for 'Simple Basics' bit for bing in the Centre of Piccadilly it offers some, space and peace to unwind and realm, which is ideal for a Glass of wine and some Nibbles for Lunch. The interiors are really beautifully ,typically Palladiaum style with shimmering mirrors and Chandalliers and shiny bright everything, it's what you would most likely feel if you where to visit Italy for the day in one of their Food Emporiums.

Every time we have a trip to Covent Garden, we like to visit Laduree as a treat for a cake and a champagne or hot chocolate. Today was our most disappointing visit ever. The staff were so uninterested & rude, they also told us we couldn’t order cake, yet when we looked around, other people were ordering and having cake delivered to their tables after we were told we couldn’t have them. Most of the young boys who were serving need to pull their trousers up, as they blatantly had their trousers pulled down under their briefs so their pants and backside were on show, not great when you’re working in a food establishment. I understand this may be a fashion statement for some but when working at somewhere like Laduree, maybe pull your trousers up for service and not walk around with your butt hanging out?

I recently visited this restaurant, and while the food was genuinely enjoyable, the overall experience left much to be desired. The hostess mishandled my reservation, and instead of offering an apology for the mistake, she had the audacity to tell me I needed to wait, despite my arriving on time. This lack of accountability set a poor tone for the evening. To make matters worse, the waitstaff were incredibly rude and unprofessional. At one point, two waiters openly commented about us to each other, which was not only unkind but also disrespectful, especially as we could all see what was happening. Good food alone isn’t enough to compensate for such poor service and lack of professionalism. Unfortunately, I wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone based on my experience.
