Crate Brewery in Tower Hamlets

Great vibes, beers always good and it’s always busy. Came as a group of 4 and didn’t book, got a table when some left and then was sceptical of the 20min sign wait for food but fair play it was about that! Pizzas were delicious, came here a few years back and it was just as good, definitely recommend!

Excellent thin, flavoursome pizza. Good choice of craft beer & wine, but alas no cask beer anymore. Lots of space inside and out, good for watching the boats go by.

Good canal side bar. Interesting range of (pretty expensive) beers. Sadly no cask offering. Food looks good, pizza, salads and snacks.

Delicious pizza. Nice atmosphere. But a bit too busy, sometimes hard to find a table.

Wow this place is special. Everything was great, I love the atmosphere, building, scene, not to mention the great beer and pizza. Turns out there's even a Michelin star restaurant on the first floor. These guys have something special and it's wonderful to see what they have achieved since 2012.

Food took ages and was average, pints not even served in a proper glass for £7…

Had middle eastern lamb pizza, it was heavenly. Crispy base, nicely spiced lamb, generous topping.

A wonderful place for drinks and pizza! We have tried three different flavors and each of them has been a hit ! Also they have a great selection of beers and ciders !! Great vibes and a place to chill. Must visit !

It’s a great venue for some drinks after work or if you live around the area. Always a fun place to be. I would say the drinks are on the expensive side but worth it for the great drinking spot.

Lovely space by the canal. Now there’s music and dancing until late as well which is new for me as hadn’t seen this in previous years. Pizza here is quite fresh and yummy - we had the spicy salami and lamb mince one. Gets quite vibey watching boats and parties pass by. Perfect for summer!

A real cool spot to spend for the afternoon. Pizzas, beers and DJs what more could you ask for. Recently went for the Coffee Club event and it was definitely one of the best things I’d been to in London. Some events have free entry and the drinks aren’t too expensive either.

Great place and location but have a terrible security guard. Visibly seen shoving girls and grabbing them by the neck aggressively for no reason. Felt very unsafe as a woman

Awful experience. Had all of our stuff in one section, and went to the toilet which was in the main bar area, and security wouldn't let us back in under any circumstances. Very rude and forceful when we tried to explain the situation to let us back in. Won't be coming back.

Can understand match days, but latest agenda of getting served in plastics (indoors) at 10pm is a slip in standards.

We had a terrible experience here, the pizzas were not great and they completely messed up our order, somethings took repeated requests to get but came eventually, service was very slow and the beer was just awful. The next day we all had stomach problems. It’s a shame because I’ve been many times before and it’s always been great before.

I go to the crate before every West Ham game with my kids. The beer is excellent, the pizzas are superb also. They keep it simple and do it really well. Staff are good especially Jerome in the bar and Bernard on security - both take time to come over and chat to us and make us feel really welcome every time we’re in. Top lads. Love the Crate. ⚒️

Relaxing place to sit and chill with a cold one by the canal. I didn't eat myself but those eating pizza really enjoyed it

Visited here on a Tuesday evening in August and was surprised at how busy it was so early in the week. The Draft beer here is so, so good and although we went for just the 1 ended up having 3 or 4 each. Only downside is that it’s quite expensive at c. £7 a pint but that’s becoming the place at most places now (August 2024). Ordered two pizzas which were both quite nice, but nothing to shout home about - all in all this place is great for the vibes, the canal side location and the crowd it draws.

I have to agree with the post below regarding the service at Crate behind the bar. This was my third time visiting Crate. When we arrived yesterday there was no one waiting at the bar, however after waiting to be served by one of the two bartenders, we resorted to standing in front of the girl behind the bar and interrupting her conversation. She appeared most annoyed that we had dared to ask for drink. The next time we returned to the bar the place was slightly busier, however the pace of the service behind the bar was painfully slow. This I don’t particularly have an issue with, it is a busy bar on a Saturday. However the staff behind the bar could not have appeared less impressed. Each server was miserable, dismissive and seemingly irritated by having to pull a pint. Then the card machine asks for a tip which is laughable to be honest. Crate’s appeal is its great location and great beer, so perhaps people are less fussed if the bar service is rubbish. I write this not to do the place down, but to make a comment that the bar staff we experienced yesterday (and on previous visits,) are doing a disservice to a great place. At least hire people who don’t resent you for asking for a beer.

Worst bar ever for service. Lovely pizza but had to eat it without a beer because just couldn’t get served. My advice, go somewhere else.

The pizza was delicious. Not too big of a meal though, I was hungry again a few hours later. Staff were helpful & offered good suggestions. The cider I had was passable. Nice place to come with mates, but make sure you're able to grab a seat outside. Otherwise it's probably not worth it

The staff appeared disorganized during our visit. I ordered food and drinks for my girlfriend and me, but when I returned to the table, they had delivered pizzas we never ordered. Despite my girlfriend's attempts to explain the mistake, the staff seemed confused and unhelpful. We went back up to clarify that our food couldn’t have possibly arrived yet. Instead of addressing the issue, they came to our table, showed little concern, and questioned why we didn’t just accept the wrong order. To make matters worse, the manager approached us as if we had intentionally taken someone else’s food, which was quite frustrating. The beer was mediocre at best.

Updated review from 5 stars to 2: So disappointing to see Crate going backwards from having mostly fully plant based menu to such limited vegan options. Your pant based pizzas were out of this world & I have been raving to all my friends that you made the best vegan pizzas in the world. Sad to see that compassionate choices are no longer on your priority list. Previous review 2022: Excellent location right by the canal. Spacious seating area outside with big chunky wooden tables and lovely views. There are a few bike-racks at the back of the beer-garden, which is helpful for us cyclists :) Friendly and welcoming staff. Superb vegan pizzas. Great selection of ales and beers. I loved their Crate stout - rich, smooth and full of flavour! Buzzing atmosphere & great crowd.

Cool beers and unfortunately luke-warm pizzas.

I found my experience at Crate to be uncomfortable and oppressive. We approached the bar. Our first attempt brought us within 5-6 metres but our path was blocked by around 60 people and a laboured service. Sharp elbows; calculated dips of the shoulder, less subtle defiance - various tactics used to get within 15 minutes of a pint, let alone the 30 minutes that less aggressive customers would be left to wait. I loved rugby at school - something about that organised chaos - but I'd not experienced a scrum like this before. So we'd made it to the bar. Our order had been placed. The 20-minute wait on the kitchen was clearly emphasised, something we could accept. Various pizzas came and went, but not ours. A mix-up of sorts but the remaining pizzas were not served. Note: I would now like to express my dearest thanks to your server, Bognar. Clearly ours and a litany of orders had been mis-managed. The aforementioned member of staff showed consummate professionalism, generously bringing us a free drink and ensuring our pizza arrived a mere 45 minutes after ordering. It was my understanding that pizzas cooked in under 5 minutes but perhaps I'm mistaken. What can you take from slow bar and food service, as well as inhospitably loud music? Well, this was not my first time at Crate (possibly my seventh or eighth). Pivot back to 2016, Hackney Wick was far from it's current status as 'the spot'. It was a tranquil place, with a genuine character - something that clearly has been lost along the way. But that's how the city goes. From the clearly underpaid staff to the boosted bass, to the minimum £7 pints (sorry, what?) and the embarrassing service. Crate has lost its way and whilst I'll join my mate's birthday there, I won't choose to frequent an obvious sellout if it were up to me.

Location location location! Beautifully set right on the canal, with an outside area, it is an awesome place to come for drinks. The pizzas looked great too, however, we arrived a little too late to order. Fantastic vibes, will become a regular.

Perfect summer spot by the canal! Spacious indoor and outdoor seating, cool interior and crunchy style pizza (sage & truffle pizza absolutely delicious). Oysters on an offer too, served outside. Good beer selection.👍

Great vibes when the sun is out and the living is easy. Great pizza, quite fast service. Can get packed on a sunny weekend afternoon. Lots of table space outside by the canal. Good pitstop of partying in nearby venues.

Just hosted an event in the terrace/garden portion of CRATE and it was perfect! Nice to be on the canal, and luckily we were covered and warm despite the terrible rainy summer weather we've been getting! Everyone was very happy with the drinks and bites, and as is always the case with CRATE, the vibes were on point! Thank you to the team (shoutout Georgia!) for all you help in making this a great event. You guys rock!!

Very nice location and chilled vibes! The food was quite average and tasted a bit like frozen pizza! There is no real service you have to go up to the bar and wait. More of a pub vibe and wouldn’t go for food.

Went to see Foo fighters at the London stadium 20th June. A friend suggested that we go there prior to the gig. The atmosphere and seeing friends was amazing. Great beer and food too. Definitely recommend.

Awesome craft brewery and pizzeria right by the river. Decent music, decent beer... didn't try the pizzas but they look delicious.

Went here on a Saturday night for a friend’s birthday. The pizza was great, the atmosphere was buzzy and in spite of it being absolutely packed, it never took long to get served at the bar.

Come here to meet your friends, people watch and hang... Great atmosphere, akin to my former haunts in Asheville or bars on intercoastal in Florida.. Nice effort on the pizza, but the crust was very undercooked, scant cheese and a Pepperoni option would be nice... The spicy was too spicy for me..

Everything was nice, but what made the experience incredible was a Waiter called Felipe, his social skills and easy-going personality had me and my friends feeling at home and comfortable and already planning when to come back, Thank you Felipe!

The food is amazing the service is also very good me and my friends were served by Felipe he was friendly and gave us a good time the drinks are decent but very affordable and the pizza is amazing does take a little time to be made however it’s worth the wait I will definitely be coming back again

Had a nice time here with friends. They were accommodating about a table although wished we were outside in the sun. Pizza was great - I had the sage and truffle white pizza which was delicious - a little cold but it was so busy I couldn't believe how fast the service was. The queue for the ladies was about 50 deep and even the men's had a line up. That's the only negative. Also had good alcohol free options.

Great spot for lunch. Although known for their beers, the pizzas are a must. Very delicious. The area is cool too. Such a positive energy.

Excellent customer service. My friend was overly impatient with the time the pizza took to arrive ( he was hungry and emotional). The gentleman who resolved this ( sorry I didn’t get his name) was professional and defused the situation

Staff were lovely, we came to spend a voucher for winning a local quiz and they helped us pick the right beers to match our tastes. Excellent menu on offer from the restaurant next door as well, I will return

I didn't like the beers too much from their own brewery but the place offers a great atmosphere, in a nice area by the canal, is great. And the pizzas are really nice. I've never thought sweet potato in a pizza would be that tasty! 😋

I was expecting a nice atmosphere but I was blown away by the pizzas and the service. While having a detox juice (yes, a pint) I would advise snaking with the pizzas. They are quite flavourful and good value. I would recommend having the rocket + prosciutto & vinegar glaze and the Middle Eastern lamb. Staff are very chill and friendly, they have some nice suggestions on drinks. I really enjoyed the sitting areas, it was spacious and the music not so loud to have a nice conversation.
