Many villages are losing their pubs, and this one is hanging on in there, and probably will for some time to come. The welcome given to a somewhat 'senior' mini bus full of drinkers riding around the vale, was warm and service and quality of the beers on offer was fine. Gardens are tidy and the flowers are lovely, but everywhere has a slightly 'shabby' appearance, and no doubt this is reflected in the fact that this hostelry is well off the beaten track, and has not found it's niche as a quality calling venue, and therefore it's profits are no doubt near the bone. Good luck to it, a very pleasant pub to visit, but for me not quite one of those at the top !

Not a bad little place. Wine alright and a bottle fairly reasonably priced. Bar staff was ok, did his job, but the landlady really needs to learn about customer service. Seemed a bit too much effort to serve us, felt very unwelcome when she came on shift so make sure you go with friends coz you won't get much from 'mine host'

Popped into the Cranmer Arms for a quick pint with my son and his neighbour. The beer was a light Otter beer from New World brewery. It went down a treat for the first of the evening. A garden for kids to run around but the play equipment is very tired and dirty and the climbing frame is in need of stronger protection across the small bridge to avoid a slip and fall. Keep your eyes on the kids if you visit. Looking forward to sampling the food in the near future.

Been going to the Cranmer Arms now since I moved to the village a little over 2 years ago. It's always very friendly and relaxed and popular with the locals. There are always 3 real ales available and I've never had a bad one yet. Children are also well catered for with swings, slide and a climbing frame outside.

Our last visit was the middle of 2014. We had a number of meals here with Groupon vouchers. The grills were very good and the fish and chips value for money. This is primarily a busy village pub with strong local clientele. The six table dining area is part of the bar, which is frequented mainly by local men whose language and conversation subjects and style are inappropriate for the ears of children or Ladies. Would advise a lunchtime visit if you're in the Vale of Belvoir and looking for a tasty meal.

Pub was very empty, no atmosphere at all, prices are extremely high for where the pub is. As a driver paying £2.80 for a pint of coke/Pepsi is shocking. I appreciate they have to make a profit but that was a joke. Taking the kids for a meal wouldn't be worth it, it would be cheaper to go to a proper restaurant in Nottingham. To cut it short to pricey for who they are, drop the prices and maybe you would pick up customers. Paul

Our first visit and experience on June 8th was not very good (see previous review) however we were kindly offered a free meal to compensate. We visited on Sunday1st July and had a lovely Sunday lunch in the beer garden. The staff were friendly and attentive, we will be back again soon.

My wife bought me a steak dinner with wine coupon as a birthday present, so this outing was rather special. A country pub several miles away that was clearly trying to stimulate business, so we looked forward with great anticipation. We arrived, entered directly into a very small bar and ordered a drink, the publican was very casually dressed and was perfunctory in his questioning of whether we had booked ( we had) and whether we had brought our coupon with us ( we had ). The "dining room" was an empty room adjacent to the bar with tables and wooden chairs, it lacked any feeling of commitment or care, a couple of tables had cutlery but there was nothing inviting or welcoming about the place, A small vase of flowers on each table would have made such a difference. A young girl acted as waitress and was very pleasant, she took our order and we waited for the steak to arrive. As we had booked and arranged a time the 45 minute wait seemed unduly long, they knew we were coming and what meal we were having, when it arrived it was adequate but unimaginatively served, unfortunately it was not piping hot which steak meals should be. We had a small glass of wine each included in the deal which was quite satisfactory and then ordered a sweet each from the menu. 10 minutes later the waitress returned to tell us that the ice cream cake and the lemon morangue pie were "off" and could we choose some thing else, at the same time she told the only other couple in the room, also eating on a coupon that their main order, the sea bass was also "off". As this was a Tuesday and they don't serve meals on a Monday presumably these products were known to be missing at least two days earlier. We re-ordered, had the sweet which again was adequate and after a short while sitting in this rather unwelcoming and sparse atmosphere, we left. There is no quibble with the value of the meal served on the coupon, we certainly would not want to have paid any more, but the atmosphere lacked any warmth or commitment on the part of the management, one got the impression that they were doing a job under suffrance rather than engaging with clients and ensuring their experience was the best possible. All in all it was a colourless lacklustre experience, eminently forgettable; when compared to our local it wasn't in the same league for welcome or for value for money so we won't be travelling the extra miles to repeat the experience.

Purchased a deal via Living Social for 2 Mixed Grills with Drinks,at this Restaurant, It was absolutely brilliant, the meat was cooked perfectly, done just as we had requested it to be. A really great little pub, very polite and accommodating. Would certainly recommend to eat there, specials board throughout the week! Many thanks for a lovely evening.

Visited with a voucher deal - Sunday lunch 2 courses for £6. Advised on arrival that there was a print error and it was only one course, and there was no chicken available. We were advised that two starters were £5 so we went for the black pudding and fishcakes which were quite tasty. Unfortunately the nut roast was very dry and tasteless, beef was ok, roast potatoes were quite nice, veg was ok but very hard, whilst the Yorkshire and stuffing tasted like they had been fried. Waitress was quite pleasant, which unfortunately cant be said for the lady at the bar. Perhaps the lack of communication whilst paying is reserved for voucher guests

We were one table of every table that night using groupon vouchers! Maybe that fact sets the mood for the management?!? Personally I would make more effort to be attentive to new customers to assure repeat business. Very small bar on entry can make newcomers uncomfortable. There was nobody at the bar, then the landlady appeared on the phone but didn't even acknowledge us! Then a really lovely waitress appeared with a welcoming smile. We had wine included in our offer which we deferred until we were eating. The meal was very well cooked. Very tasty meats and home made chips, we would go back for that meal as it is good value even at full price. But we were not made to feel welcome in such a small place, we did enjoy a few games of cheap pool. Really feel that the landlords didn't maximise on the event at all. Shame because it could have been so much nicer with a friendlier approach.

Had a 2 mixed grill groupon voucher. Food was excellent. Really good steak, and all the elements ,including homemade chips, were good quality and perfectly cooked. The deserts are 2 for £5 and were also simple and excellent. Waitress was friendly and attentive. Food was maybe a little slow but we were late, so will let them off! Didn't seem to be much parking and we had to leave the car on the main road a couple of hundred yards away.Overall good, well priced, unpretentious pub food. Will be giving their curry night a try soon.

We ended up visiting this pub as my husband had decided to 'treat' me to a Sunday Lunch Website Discount Voucher Deal, so I was slightly dubious from the offset but the reviews appeared mainly positive so I went along with an open mind. The exterior of the pub is appealing but that's unfortunately where it starts and ends, when we approached the bar (sign on the wall had an out of date offer and a curry deal on the place mat states ''narn' bread!) my husband gave his name, the bar person (middle aged woman), was apathetic in manner and spoke across us to a young girl (pleasant but perfunctory), who then showed us to a table, no drinks were offered and no welcome was given. The dining room is decorated sparsely and is quite acoustic, we were told what was and wasn't available on the menu and were then left to peruse them. The menu looks and reads like a truckers cafe and my starter of black pudding and bacon arrived luke warm with some blackened salad leaves and absolutely no condiment making it a very dry experience. Whilst we were waiting for the starter to arrive, the smoke/fire alarm kept going off (about 5 times in total) and sounded like an evacuation alarm on an army base, no apology was made for this whatsoever and the waitress commented only because a diner asked if it was something that happened often! The main course arrived (vegetables on a chipped side dish) and we still hadn't been offered any further drinks (hubby had been to the bar before the starter arrived) so draw your own conclusion on whether that's bad customer service and or bad business for failing to maximise a sale! The main course arrived and the serving sizes are on plates that aren't quite your average dinner plate so the portions look like a school dinner and taste pretty similar too, right down to the Aunt Bessie's Yorkshire Pudding. My advice would be to save your £12.50 (bearing in mind it would be £25 without the voucher!) and go and get yourself a Birds Eye Frozen Roast Dinner instead, you'll probably enjoy it more. Quite a shame really as the pub is in a lovely setting.

We purchased a discount deal voucher for a Sunday lunch for two. The deal looked good and 1 pm was arranged for our two course meal. Nice country pub in a great village setting. Our preference was for a mains and dessert. However even though the starters and desserts were the same price this was 'not part of the deal'. A bad start. The voucher was suitable between mid day and 6 pm but on choosing our compulsory starters we were then told that only one portion of fishcakes were left so re select. 45mins after arriving the starters arrived. The food was ok for the deal price but not special or worth the full price on the menu. No one came to enquire if we wanted to select any deserts so we left to enjoy a walk.Don't think we will be back.

My wife, myself and our 3 year old son have driven from Nottingham to this "family friendly pub" for Sunday lunch today only to be told when ordering food having been given a menu that they do not have enough food!!! I can understand this to some degree but more disappointingly was the response from the landlady (I assume) to flatly refuse to serve any type of food having explained that we had driven from Nottingham (25mins away). This was our first and will be our last visit.

We went to this pub after reading the reviews on tripadvisor. We had a drink and went to order some food at 7.50pm. The barmaid who was not very friendly just said they had stopped doing food. No reason was given. It says on the beer mats and web site that food is served from 5pm to 9pm. Very disappointing we will not be rushing back.

This pub/restaurant is close to where we live but, have not visited until today. Why ? I guess that it gets overlooked as the exterior is a bit non-descript. We booked a lunch time mixed grill for ourselves and something for 5 yr old daughter. As it happened daughter was off having grand-daughterly stuff and we only needed a table for two. This presented no problem for the friendly staff and we received courteous and good service throughout our visit. The food arrived in good time and the generous portion of mixed meats was made even better by the quality. A couple of pints of the well-kept Doom Bar bitter added to the general feeling of satisfaction. Thoroughly enjoyable lunch time fayre and then a lovely walk around the village and to Cranmers Mound before making the short journey home. We will return, next time with daughter as the adjoining grassed area and play stuff (with a bouncy castle) will be enjoyed. We will be recommending to friends.

Visited with four of my family on a Groupon deal. The reception was very welcoming, and the pub is very well decorated. The mixed grills that we had were substantial, and very well cooked. There is a nice buzz about this pub, and the owners have been very successful in catering for a nice bunch of locals at the bar, and adequate space for visitors who wish to dine. There is an excellent range of draft beers, and they have special meal deals on different evenings which were extremely good value. We only live a few miles from the Cranmer, and will be visiting it regularly in future.

Read about the pub in the back of Hilary Mantel's book 'Wolf Hall' and decided to try it out today - 1st April 2014 - I'd heard indifferent reviews about it but I was pleasantly surprised - good food at a good price, good beer and the Landlord could not have been more friendly, helpful and attentive. The menu is a bit limited but do not let that put you off - easier to decide what to have. We paid £6 each for two courses and it was worth every penny - we will be going again and quite soon

Lovely attentive young staff, clean and friendly.. Always been use to this as a drinking pub and how it has changed since new owners... Value for money was fantastic under £10 for a 3 course meal, starters were amazing and the main and deserts were rather yummy too..., having been to the Haven last year which was the worst experience ever, it's nice to be able to eat out on Mothers Day and the food to be excellent... Can't wait to eat again in such a lovely country pub with lovely staff especially the two young waitresses... Thank you very much...

Used £12 groupon voucher for mixed grill and a drink for 2 , this in mind you can't complain. Lovey friendly lady front of house , the stark dinning area was freezing cold needed to keep coat on however lovely fire in bar area shame fire not lit in dinning area. The mixed grill was spoilt by awful tasteless cheap sausage and a dry piece of chicken ( frozen type not fresh) the gammon and steak were great tho and had plenty of flavour , would not return to pay the full price version but for the price we paid it was alright. This place could do really well if they just used local sourced produce for sausage etc , and warm the dinning room up decor wise and heating

This is our favourite restaurant/pub and after three years of regular visits and superb food every time, I thought it worth a well-earned high-praise review. Apart from the occasional evening event, (they hold special themed nights from time to time), it's generally lunches we go for. The quality of the food is consistently high and the service very friendly and professional. The menu is understandably quite small, given that everything is cooked to order but seems varied enough for most tastes. Despite the high standard of cooking and produce, the prices are very competitive indeed. It does get quite busy some days despite being a bit off the beaten track, so best to book if possible. There is a large secluded back garden with seating, (where they hold their events), and a good children's play area. The building itself is still an old unspoilt country pub and serves at least two different real ale. Can't fault the Plough at all really.

Lovely place, lots of beautiful things in the garden section and household. Wonderful Christmas dept for decorations and lights to beautiful gifts. Unfortunately the breakfast in the cafe wasnt as good, we tried the avocado on toast for breakfast, and it wasn't up to much one piece of toast with a small dish of avocado which really didn't look appetising, , and really wasn't up to much at all , we left most of it. Advice try something else

Food was good however the customer service let the evening down a lot. The food order was taken wrong, understandable. We were charged for the more expensive one, unsure of the difference, I asked about this that was met with the manager being rude and giving us the 50p difference. Not a singular apology, especially with one of our meals arriving when the others were about finished. Ordering deserts was met with more rudeness from her and the whole interactions tainted our evening. After a few times of visiting here we won’t be back as would feel uncomfortable with her service again.

Owner shouted a lady out the pub after she went to the loo. That is not what a respectful staff member should do and I’m disappointed that that would happen in the local pub.
