We are on holiday on IoW and organised our Monday evening around going here for the live Irish music night (advertised as 8pm on Monday evenings). Arrived at 8pm, musicians and their instruments were there...we drank poor pints for an hour awaiting some action...we then asked when the music would begin and were told that there was a shortage of musicians as it was the week of the Isle of Wight Festival...so no music tonight...??? Shambolic!

This place is very small and cosy with limited choice. We did walk in and nearly walk out again. We stayed for a drink and ordered wine. There were two choices and the barman got it wrong. It didn't matter though. We felt that were invaders here in a way and it felt a little uncomfortable. It is intimate, but wasn't the place for us.

Surprised at the lack of choice of Ales on a Saturday evening (20/8/18), partner had a can of Guinness due to this. We only stayed for 1 drink as mainly low stalls to sit on so not particularly comfortable and a lot of flies near the window where we sat and it was annoying trying to keep off our beer.

There was just the one local ale on from a choice of 3 when I visited. My experience of ale houses is that the beer is served from a cool room. This had the barrels in the bar area and so on a very hot evening the beer was over warm. The bar was also emptying at about 8 pm though it was busier on our arrival There is a small outside and not particularly appealing smoking area with a few chairs. Had hoped it was going to be a better experience

A very attractive small bar with a small courtyard out the back. Unfortunately the management insists on taking no notice at all of customers advice and complaints, over a period of years, so the pub is frequently almost empty when it should be a thriving asset to Cowes. The beer choice can be interesting but the beer is served warm and out of condition, doggedly poured to the end of the barrel to take money rather than provide a quality drink in exchange for payment. This bar could be a destination from all over the island, and the mainland, if it cared about the quality of the beer.

Beer always perfect. The scotch egg that we ordered one lunch-time was straight out of a Sainsburys Basics bag from the supermarket 3 doors down so I definitely would have food here again.

I saw this place on TA and vowed next time I was in Cowes I'd give it a go.. Popped in for a pint on Friday night with 2 friends and ended up stopping for several... The place has a really friendly vibe, partly due to the fact that is probably no more than 40' x 12' in size, so it feels like you're drinking round at a friends house. There were 4 ales available, all new to me and the landlord was more than willing to let you try a taster before committing to any of them. As mentioned elsewhere, pork scratchings were great, not cardboard usual offerings you find in most places and prices very reasonable.. Definitely go back when next over on the island.

They even do takeaway beers and ciders. Great to take back to the boat. We will definitely go again

Great tiny little pub with a great ale and lager selection. Good friendly, talky and knowledgeable staff. Fairly priced and decent (slightly nautical) interior too. Visited with my family and there's something for every type of drinker here.I sampled an ale, but didn't like it all that much so instead went for a "Das Schwarze" by Schwaben Braü (A black lager) which was very nice. The others with me had the "Meister Pils" again by the same German brewery and again very nice. Hard scratchings available which is always a good sign of a proper ale house. Can't fault the place and so will definitely visit again on my next trip to Cowes.

It's an ale house. Consequently it focuses on ale and does a very good job at it. Rather 'cosy' but worth it for the selection and quality of the ale on sale. Not somewhere to take your wife/girlfriend/partner for a romantic date unless they appreciate a fine ale - in which case they will be impressed.

The Cowes Ale House is small and cute with a good selection of local and international beers. We were in cowes for 2 nights, and sent to this place both times. One of the best pub Sunday lunches we've had in several years. The meat was succulent - and if you can't choose beef or port you can have half and half. The potatoes were crunchily roasted with soft interior. The Yorkshire puddings seemed a step above most pub versions being neither greasy nor, like so many places, perfect roundels straight from a freezer. There wasn't much green veg but the kale - normally not something I like - was salty and well prepared. Great with the beautifully prepared red cabbage. Big shared portion of cauliflower cheese included too, and - on request - extra gravy and really tangy horseradish. Frankly not much to criticise here and the desserts were brilliant too. We had heard someone say that the change of ownership a week or so back had caused a drop in standards but it's hard to believe that it was ever much better than this. Highly recommended.
