Visited the Cow & Calf following it's recent reopening. We had a really lovely meal last week. Both the Mac & Cheese and the Fish and Chips was delicious. Food was reasonably priced as were the drinks (Sam Smiths). I like how the interior has been refurbished. Looks really nice and welcoming now like an old worldly pub. Will deffo visit again.

So nice to see the Cow and Calf open again. Great atmosphere and the prices are like going back in time 10 years. The Bar managers and staff are doing everything right and now they are selling food it’s a nice change from just having the Top Red to eat at. I am sure it will stay open for many years to come given how busy it is as long as Humphrey looks after the staff.

Have nothing but praise for this pub. Had Sunday lunch here with friends and the food was lovely, even managed a beautiful dessert too. Will definitely be trying more from the menu. The pub itself is traditional and homely and even though the rules some seem unreasonable, I personally think it works well and makes the visit more enjoyable. The staff are brilliant and so welcoming and the atmosphere is great. Looking forward to our next visit

First visit yesterday for the Thursday quiz and it was like travelling back to the days where pubs were relaxing, social places. The atmosphere was welcoming and friendly. It was quite full and felt long established rather than newly open, what with the charming older gents sat in the corner (who whispered a few answers for the quiz to us) and a mix of people from various age groups. The lad behind the bar was lovely too, he obviously got on well with his bosses as they exchanged lots of light hearted banter. Emily and Chloe have created a warm and friendly place to spend a few hours. Will definitely be back.

Staff was fantastic, they have a lovely out door garden with lovely flowers 💐 sun trap. Food was like my nans home cooking 😋 I'm not keen on mash and passed some on b4 I tried it. Best mash I've ever had. Each meals comes with a gravy boat which is perfect for me.. gravy is the one. Mint sauce and other condiments come in ramekins 👌 Larger was one of the best I've ever tasted. I'm a pint carling chick normally. Was teddy's or toddys I don't know. It's strong though.. I left wavy 🤣 after 4 pints. There was 10 of us and not 1 mistake was made. Will be going back 100% You need to pre book Sunday lunch my sister said. Which I'm not very good at stuff like that. So will always be inviting my sister 🤣 Ow larger was cheap too .

Visited a few times now since new landladies have taken over. Excellent atmosphere, wonderful hospitality and great food. Just what the village needed. If you take himbridge because the brewery specifically requests mobiles are not used inside the pub, either go outside or have a word with yourself .

Very poor customer service. Purchased two soft drinks which were flat with no fizz. On informing the manager that the drinks were flat and not fizzy she went on to explain that this is the way the soft drinks are meant to be. On stating that when we were served it is not explained you're not getting a Pepsi or Coke, basically you are being mis sold a product. She made it clear that this was not her problem. All this whilst she is sat at a table drinking a beer and clearly not managing. Establishment also wasn't able to serve food due to the kitchens being broken and the inside of the pub smells like it is damp and possibly mold. Will not be returning.

Lovely new land lady, very welcoming atmosphere and fair price for Taddy Lager. No phones, dogs and swearing inside.

Walked in once and saw a middle aged man set fire to his head in the bar. Outside the pub that bloke with the big head from Reverend & The Shakers was busking. Never again.

Food was really nice and portion sizes was fair. Staff were friendly, just make sure you take cash as they don't accept card payments and don't allow use of phones inside.

Great staff but the brewery owner, Humphrey Smith, is an arrogant, entitled child who sacked the managers because they couldn't serve his favourite pudding. Don't give this man your business until he corrects his mistake.

It could be a good pub but the owner Humphry needs to retire as he is destroying the reputation of the pub.

started to work in this area, thought this might make a nice local, food looked nice but when I got my pint it looked cloudy and tasted awful I took it back to the bar and the landlord said it was ok, I sat back down and tried to drink it but couldn't..as I walked out a few of the locals commented...beer bad again!

Visited with my family for my sons birthday. Absolutely gorgeous pub. Louise and Steve made us feel welcome and after knowing was my sons birthday made a fuss and made him feel special. Food was amazing can highly recommend the pies. I looked at reviews from previous visitors and honestly cant understand what the issue is. Landlords extremely friendly and yes there are no mobiles allowed but that is all sam smith pub policies and it's well informed before you enter the pub, but since we were there for family time this policy doesnt bother us and looking around the pub seeing everyone interacting properly rather than sat on mobiles is a refreshing sight. Travelled from whitby and was not disappointed will definitely be back again soon. Thank you both and see you soon

I would strongly advise anyone not to have a buffet at the cow & calf 😂we paid £330 for a few sandwiches, & sausage rolls, extremely rude landlord when I complained, not the sort of thing you you need after your mother in laws funeral 😭

The landlord and landlady were aggressive and very unhelpful. The level of service is rubbish ! These people do not deserve to run a pub! Humphry, what the hell are you doing employing these people?

Una vez más es amable y acogedor, el personal y los clientes habituales parecen realmente encantados de verte. Fuegos abiertos, sin música, sin "bandidos" y sin teléfonos móviles. En realidad puedes chatear. Las cervezas y cervezas siguen siendo tan buenas y tienen un precio muy moderado. Ambos probamos el filete gammon de 10 oz y debo decir que fue de excelente calidad, cocinado a la perfección y bien presentado. Volveremos a probar más cervezas y opciones del menú muy pronto. Deberías hacer lo mismo.

Lovely little pub with friendly staff

¡Viejo y pintoresco pub maloliente! ¡Efectivo solo en este día y edad! Este pub tiene una "prohibición de dispositivos móviles y dispositivos autoafirmados". ¡El GM me dijo groseramente que guardara mi teléfono móvil o que no me fuera! Lo siento, pero no tienes ningún derecho legal de aplicar esto a nadie. ¡Qué pasaría si se necesitara a alguien para hacer / recibir una llamada de emergencia! ¡Esto está mal en muchos niveles! ¡Me dijeron nuevamente que en este caso nos dirían que nos fuéramos, ya que era la política de pub de Sam Smith!Una manera DESGASTANTE de tratar a las personas, muestra una falta de servicio al cliente para los clientes que pagan. ¡No pierdas tu tiempo y dinero en este lugar vil!

The Cow and Becerro ha vuelto a abrir, pero no mucha gente lo sabe, ya que en el Trip Adviser todavía dice cerrado y si intentas llamar para reservar una mesa, el número no está disponible, no hay forma de administrar un negocio, ¿por qué no? ¿Lo arreglan?Todavía es un pub de hombres, no hay nada de malo en eso, pero tener una cena allí simplemente no es cómodo.En cuanto a la comida, pedimos bistec y pastel de riñón que hubiera estado bien si no hubiera estado en la microonda demasiado tiempo ya que esto hizo que la corteza se endureciera.Recibimos nuestro pescado y papas fritas en un recipiente de cerdo de madera profunda [realmente], las patatas fritas estaban en la parte inferior con el pescado colocado en la parte superior y también un plato de guisantes de jardín y un plato de salsa tártara, todo en esta caja de madera profunda. Fue difícil sacar los guisantes de la caja antes de que todos se cayeran del tenedor. También fue difícil llegar a las papas fritas debajo del pescado, simplemente no había espacio para maniobrar, ¿por qué no lo ponen en un plato y cortan los trucos?Habiendo dicho eso, son las mejores patatas fritas de pub que he probado en mucho tiempo, pero ganamos. No vuelvo.

Very pleased to report this pub is open again for business. Visited today, after a funeral. I have visited this pub over the last 40 years & can say, with some degree of accuracy, it hasn't changed. Unsure if food us available, but the staff are friendly enough. The prices don't appear to have gone up much either a very cheap & well kept pint of bitter was only £2.00! Car park is ample & well marked & theres out door seating.

Poor environment the smell was vile...the walk in is disgusting no kerb appeal whatsoever... customer care the poorest thing of all.... Was spoken to in a very unprofessional way no where near as good as it used to be. The mobile phone ban is ridiculous in this day and age. Was told to remove my phone from the table as it was banned. Fair enough your rules but you don't need to raise your voice and shout at customers. Won't be returning and I'll spread the word about poor standards should have remained closed.

Conocí a un amigo aquí para almorzar esta semana. Encantador pub antiguo con chimeneas y un ambiente agradable. No había música, ¡así que la gente realmente hablaba entre sí y con otros asistentes al pub! Tuvimos un almuerzo encantador con pasteles caseros. No pudimos preparar un budín, pero había mucho para elegir si hubiéramos tenido espacio. Buena suerte a los dos nuevos gerentes.

Meals were delicious would definitely come again, I would recommend the sticky toffee pudding was the best I have ever had, good sized portions , so many options to choose and the service is amazing

Been to grenoside crematorium to visit family members and decided to go to cow and calf to celebrate our loved ones life's we walked on foot down a busy country lane there in pouring rain and unfortunately was closed yet again but looked on their website this morning to say they was open so very misleading they need to update their page

No stars, the pub is closed . Looks like the latest tenants have done a runner.

We recently called into the Cow & Calf after its recent closure and unfortunately we will not be returning. The place has lost its community feel and just isn't the same as when the previous Landlady was running the pub with a thriving bar and great home cooked food. She will be missed!

We visited yesterday & met the new management - wishing them every luck on their new venture together. Lovely rustic pub, can’t wsit to go back & enjoy some food when the kitchen opens.

Great local pub, great atmosphere, great prices.

Sat in beer garden tonight in the sun with children, drunk locals swearing and then some drink driving person who had parked their car in court yard even though there is a car park available decided to do a 7 point turn whilst children are with families, then reversed into a bush that is next to tables, totally unacceptable, need to get rid of these people if the new owners want to do well, we have been coming here for years but it puts you off, it's like a working men's club, not inviting for families at all.

Nice beer and garden to drink it in. Food was average. Pub only take cash payment which appears to leave many new customers slightly baffled.

Have been a regular here since I moved north.... well as regular as I could be given where I live in South Yorkshire...the place has changed hands a number of times which is not good....99 % of the locals say hello and like a laugh..... however there is a small percentage of mindless morons who think that one particular table belongs to them- even when there are numerous other tables available.....so if you are sat at the table to the right of the front door...... expect to be joined by some local idiots who refuse to move even when you tell them that your brother is sitting in the seat and he is on crutches and that he is outside.... well apparently it makes no difference.

We recently visited The Cow and Calf for drinks after almost a year and must say the pub has really been turned around! The landlady and staff were very welcoming and attentive, and the pub itself is now clean and well kept with open fires. We definitely will be back again!!!

Popped into the cow for a pint of the famous taddy larger and also as I heard new managers were taking over. I couldn't believe the difference of the place after the last time I came which was last summer. There is no food and the place is very unkempt and all the staff have changed. Who might I say were a very lovely bunch of girls. What happened? It used to be very clean and the food was amazing. I will return and give a second chance as I have experienced and know what a great place this could be but maybe not for a few months, which is a shame because its a lovely place when run and maintained correctly.

Me and my husband called into the cow and calf for a drink , lovely greeting really made welcome, a really cosy pub. Will be popping in again .

A nice friendly local where men have placards in the pub for meeting for generations. Not a trendy place but a warm open fire and a place to solve world problems or at least talk about every idea under the sun

Prices are very keen, beers are a good choice, parking is plentiful, atmosphere is on the nose and staff are are very welcoming.

This is a beautiful country pub situated on the border of Grenoside. It has an open fire, and several rooms to sit. The food is amazing and the Samual Smiths beer is £2 a pint! What more could you possibly ask for?

Great pub with lovely traditional interior and view over the city from the beer garden. And getting change from a fiver for two pints of lovely Tadcaster brewed Sam Smith's beer helps too!

Nosotros lo hicimos y estaban deliciosos. El único inconveniente fue que tiene un poco de 'lugar local para sentir la gente local". Como entré a través de la cervecería hacia el pub, me sentí como la escena de la película occidental donde el piano player y todo el mundo convierte las paradas y miradas. Sin embargo, debo subrayar, fue no refleja en modo alguno por el personal, que era extremadamente amable y servicial. La comida era excelente y sin duda lo recomiendo.

En nuestro camino a casa desde el aeropuerto nos muy hambrientos después de no comer por 10 horas así que decidimos probar la comida de la vaca y ternera. Estábamos un poco preocupados porque yo ya había visto todo tipo de críticas de su comida y nos llama a las 6. 30 pm hora del té un miércoles, así que pensamos que pueden ser ocupados (especialmente con el tiempo de estar tan bien). Es un hotel muy pintoresco y pequeño pub, no mucho para ofrecer mi marido, que es una verdadera fanática pero ale disfrutamos de nuestra visita. Afortunadamente para nosotros estaba muy tranquilo, así que se sirvió comida bastante rápidamente. El servicio fue muy bueno, el personal era cortés y servicial. Mi marido tenía el pastel de pollo con patatas y verduras (verduras servido en una olla de hierro fundido mono), mientras que yo opté por la carne en ale tarta con puré y vegetales. La comida estaba caliente, bien presentada y estaba impecable. Sin duda probarlo de nuevo algún día!

Called here tonight (on the eve of our daughters wedding) for tea, thank goodness we did. What a lovely quaint little place, very olde worlde. The food was fabulous bar and waitress equally as good. Very fresh, hot and delicious. We will definitely return.

Ir todo el tiempo para cenas de domingo y nos encanta! Domingo almuerzos en otro lugar siempre comparado con la cena asado de cerdo aquí (no igualados todavía! Los precios son excelentes,) el personal es encantador (especialmente Sally! Perro amable, agradable) costo vino en invierno y precioso patio para bebidas de verano.

Nos queríamos hacer algo para comer el domingo la vaca y becerro fue recomendado por un amigo, tan contentos, lugar pintoresco pub país, tranquilo cuando llegamos la chica del bar no parecía muy contento, estaba un poco nervioso por toda la visita no se desanime, la comida es deliciosa, caseras Domingo almuerzo yumyum! ! ! ! Nos llevaron a nuestra mesa reservada la camarera en la parte de comedor era encantadora, muy amable y servicial, la comida llegó y no me puedo quejar de la comida en los 3 de nosotros tuvimos cerdo y pollo tarta que tenía era una delicia. . . . Las verduras y puré. llegó por separado, así que podría servir, siéntase como no me puedo quejar y los pudines eran deliciosos. Diría a cualquiera que pruebe este es una pequeña joya pubit.
