We booked a table in advance for four to celebrate my mother-in-law’s 88th birthday. The welcome, food and service were excellent. We had afternoon tea; the sandwiches were “door stop” size with plenty of filling. Cakes and scones were excellent. We had to take some home as we couldn’t eat it all. Perfect celebration. The only disappointment is that they no longer accept tips on credit card so remember to take some cash…..!

Visited today with sister and you would have thought we were invisible! We waited to be seated, the waitress came out and wiped the table directly in front of us ( and left it really wet ) but ignored us. She wiped the table next to that and proceeded to seat the people behind us. The man ( in charge I presume ) could see we were waiting and finally seated us. I mentioned the table was wet and the waitress said “ yes I have wiped it!” So I said yes but it’s very wet. She wiped it with a t towel practically threw a menu at us and vanished to the kitchen. After a while the man took the other people’s order at which point we left! It’s a shame my sister lives locally and I’ve been in with her before and the food is nice but if you are busy surely there should be people out front serving and not 1 out front and 4 in the kitchen. Manners cost nothing. Also if you serve soup why is it mot shown on the menu or on the board?

We visited this cafe this morning. It was an extremely hot day (too hot) and this made no difference to the lovely welcome we received. The lovely lady helped us to find a table where we would be the most comfortable. We had nicely made cups of coffee and the most enormous slices of simply delicious carrot cake ( this was from the fridge due to the heat, and was wonderful). I will definitely be visiting this cafe again. The gift shop filled with delightful items to browse as we left was really an added bonus. Do not visit Somerton without stopping in here!

I was in Somerton for business, so checked on here for somewhere to have lunch. We nearly missed it, as it is at the back of a gift shop, but looked up to see sign above the shop door. You walk through the gift shop to get to the cafe at the rear. We saw some nice cakes, and a specials board, but decided on the large sized breakfast, and coffees. Breakfasts were very nice, but had the horrible cheap bread which we don't normally eat, as it is not proper bread. The sausages are always a sign of the quality, and they were above average, with even the dogs, eating some! I decided to have a cream tea, as I eat them regularly, and can tell a poor one! The scones were very nice, but have had much better in Somerset. Jam was not great, as it was that cheaper pulp type with no fruit, and the clotted cream was that sterilised cream with that certain taste. Our local cafe did the same, just before it sold up, although it had a Rodda's sign outside! I eat cream virtually everyday with puddings, etc, and my work supplies both major Cornish brands to the Supermarkets! Service was friendly & efficient, but prices were above average compared to other places in Somerset, etc. One good thing they had was fresh local organic salad from Glebe Farm, although there was nothing else organic! Would we come back? I have seen some lovely local restaurants that look like they care about their food quality, and have excellent reviews, too! Most people are happy with what they eat, yet are getting fat, and unhealthy! We eat top-end food, virtually everyday, and not as a treat.

Visited the Courtyard café recently with a friend. Decided to sit outside in the small courtyard to the rear of the café, as it was a warm pleasant afternoon. The coffee and cakes were very good, service was fine, but the outside space left a lot to be desired. To be blunt, it was very tatty. You looked up at the back of the building, which needed a good coat of paint. A lovely bright mural would have made a BIG difference. Paint peeling off the paintwork on the windows. Uneven floor surface. It would not take much effort to make this a very pleasant sitting area. After all it IS called the "Courtyard Café" !!!

I visited today with my mother and 3 year old son. We walked through the gift shop to get to the cafe, and were admiring a number of items we might purchase on the way out. We were followed by the gift shop worker the duration. I picked up a toy from the shelf while my mother and son found a seat and took it over for my son to play with. I intended to open the toy, occupy my son and then immediately pay for the item. I was met with the very unfriendly, and in fact rude gift shop staff to say I couldn't open it until I had paid. I immediately paid for the item, and returned to my son. After finishing our drinks my mum and son left and I was perusing the shelves, looking for cards and christmas gifts when I heard the gift shop worker talking very loudly to the cafe staff, saying how she thought my actions were unacceptable and she would never do something of the kind. When I confronted her, I politely said we wouldn't be using the establishment again as we were made to eel very unwelcome. She agreed, we probably shouldn't and was told my actions were rude and unacceptable.I had tried on a number of occasions by this point to highlight that my son is autistic, and that I was merely attempting to occupy him in unfamiliar surroundings in order to prevent him getting upset or causing a scene. Very little consideration was given to this fact, and actually I was told she had 'had a belly full of badly behaved children already today'.Firstly, my son had not been badly behaved at all, and to assume he would be because others had been 'bad' is unkind, and secondly I would suggest not welcoming children, or indeed selling toys should the staff be so inpatient with young people.I would suggest 'The Gifted Company' hire some gifted staff. Will not return.

The tea for one was plentiful and to thesurprise of my wife, was made with loose tea which she really approved. Not cheap but good value considering the quality and the care taken by the staff. Only one point, a noisy dog spoilt the atmosphere and both my wife and I hate dogs in cafes and have often walked out when present. Return visit to a favourite stopping off place for coffee, met with a vast selection of (mostly very large!) cakes and other goodies, including a choice of gluten free and vegan. We tried the chocolate cake (regular, not GF) and the carrot cake, former good, latter outstanding - both agreed it was the best version of a carrot cake we had ever eaten....turned out it had taken the chef 17 versions to perfect the recipe! Well worth the work... Also appreciated a good, non bitter blend of decaf coffee, tasted fine without milk. Very good value at £9.00 for coffee and cake (good size slices) for two people.

Always go to this cafe with friends when meeting up in Somerton to visit the Ace art gallery and usually enjoy a lunch there. Last visit we had some below average soup, strange flavour combinations and not much of it (£5.75). Thought we'd give it another go yesterday for an early lunch - baked potato with a filling and salad (£7.95). Another below average meal - warmed up baked potato obviously from the day before - very disappointing, expected far more of this cafe where the meals are a bit overpriced. No member of staff asked us if our meals were ok during or after eating on either occasion. Something has changed at this normally good cafe. We will be going somewhere else for lunch when we are next in Somerton.

I have never been somewhere for a meeting where we were asked after 45 minutes to move tables as an unreserved table of 4 was apparently reserved for 1 person to then once moved be asked to leave or buy another coffee! We had already purchased 3 coffees and then a 4th totalling over £11 for a meeting of an hour and a half. There were free tables, no one had to be turned away due to our taking up a table and we were interrupted twice in an effort to make us leave. When one of our group left a frantic member of staff came over to check she hadn’t left without paying. This was the only time a member of staff ever attended to us at the table other than to make us feel unwelcome. Every time a member of staff came close I was anxious that I was going to be asked to leave and we felt unwelcome. I would not recommend this place for a meeting and will not be back even for leisure. The poor member of staff asking us to leave apologised on behalf of his manager for making him come and ask us. Clearly the manager has some poor customer service skills. If your looking for a place to meet for any longer than 30 mins I suggest you look elsewhere or be prepared for the worst possible customer service.

I visited this cafe last saturday and felt uneasy as soon as I entered the shop. The Courtyart Cafe was very nice and the customer service was pleasant and the staff were delightful. We had lovely tea followed by delicious portugese tart and the grandchildren enjoyed their cakes. However as soon as we had finished me and my grandchildren had a look in the shop and felt really uneasy as we felt like we were being watched. My grand children recieved a filthy look by the ghastly lady in the shop.It is such a shame that this beautiful cafe will now have lost any of our future business due to the unwelcoming experience from the front shop. Very unwelcoming!

We visit this lovely cafe on a regular basis. We always receive a very warm welcome and the choice of home made cakes and scones is amazing and never disappoints. This really is a little gem and we love it. Thank you Catherine and all the team, you all work so hard and are always cheerful.Liz and Graeme (Liongate House B&B Ilchester)

Pleasant cafe in Somerton with gift shop spoilt this time by a sign on the back door warning about uneven flagstones. Hate that they know the flagstones are uneven and therefore dangerous, but would rather pass the blame for injury or accident onto their customers. Poor do. Fix the flagstones.

This is a quintessentially English coffee shop. At the back of a gift shop there is charming sunny courtyard in which to relax and enjoy the really good coffee. At the counter inside there is a wonderful array of cakes to tempt you as well as light lunches on offer. A lovely atmosphere, pleasant staff and I can assure you that you will want to go back again.

Although it's a little bit pricier than nearby competitors this is a hidden little gem in the historic town of Somerton. They have a fantastic menu with daily specials, wonderful cakes, which you can also order in advance to take away, and I believe they do Christmas pudding orders as well. It is a very popular choice and can therefore sometimes not have enough space although now the weathe is improving they will be using their back garden area which is lovely on a sunny day. Very enjoyable and relaxing experience with friendly and helpful staff. I would highly recommend.

Stumbled across this cafe in Somerton last week whilst out with my children. Fantastic selection of home cooked food and cakes including some gluten free for me. Lovely staff and reasonable prices. Hope to go back again soon.

Very surprised by Charlotte T's remarks about the staff. Lovely lunch as usual. I go here as I am gluten free and the cooks are always happy to amend the menu for me, a salad garnish with soup for example instead of bread (I react to gf bread) or frittata (sweet potato and goat's cheese) with salad and homemade coleslaw. The tea is loose, not teabags, with pretty china and a tea strainer. Lapsang with a slice of lemon is my favourite and fantastic gluten free orange almond cake or chocolate brownies. Hopeless if you're on a diet. Sadly I can only look longingly at the coffee cake and the carrot cake. When I bring my stepfather he loves the liver and onions. The garden at the back is very sheltered and sunny, a great spot to while away an hour reading the paper or one of their magazines. All in all a very peaceful relaxing environment with very friendly, polite staff who are only too happy to help.

Was very disappointed on a recent visit after hearing good reviews. Cake and sandwiches that we brought was delicious. However this was ruined by very rude and moody members of staff. We went into the toilets and were followed by a women rudely bursting into the lady's toilets stating 'you are not aloud to use these unless you are in the cafe' and then stormed out. It was quite obvious that we were going to sit in the cafe as half our group had already gone to order. This was not a great start. We then went to the tills to chose a cake and the girl that served us was one of the most distracted, uninterested and moody people I have ever been served by. Not even so much as a hello. This is a really nice place with lovely food a smile and politeness goes along way. Such a shame that it was ruined by staff.

Well what can I say the food was excellent, great friendly service I think a few pubs could learn a lesson from these people! I had goats cheese & beetroot salad, my husband had the bacon & mushroom salad, followed by carrot and fruit cake. I think you probably need to get here early to get a table as not a huge place

When we want to spoil ourselves, we usually drive to Living Pretty in Curry Rivel for lunch. However, this time I wanted to stay in Somerton, so we tried the Courtyard Cafe and I'm glad we did!Great food, good service and you can browse the gift shop on your way in, or out.

Not only were the cake and tea delicious, but my friend and our sank into comfy armchairs and nattered away for far too long, without feeling time-pressured to move on. What's more, I then left my scarf behind by mistake and when I returned days later they handed it back to me, with a smile! Polite and friendly service.

My husband and I drop in to this café on our trips from Hampshire to Cornwall as it is half way and beats stopping at the motorway-type cafes along the route. There is free parking in the village and it takes no more than a few minutes off the A303 to have a lovely atmosphere and rest. The food is always divine, whether cooked or cakes and you can actually relax whilst there. Top rated and well worth the small detour!

We called in for a late lunch on a showery Saturday. It was a lovely experience, the cafe was bustling with people giving a lovely friendly ambiance. I had a great Bacon & Mushroon Warm Salad, salad included some fruit making it so much more interesting. My husbands panini was just as enjoyable. We have eaten here before and will definitely return before too long.

I simply loved this place on my first visit, and gave it 5 stars. Revisited on a monday in August, we had a lovely smiley welcome from the lady in the gift shop, but the cafe was a bit strange. It was busy but it wasn't packed which was nice for us, but there was a short queue to order your food. Sadly the queue and the specials board (which is so packed with dishes it's really hard to read without getting close to it) are right beside the till and the dessert/cake display and trying to read it put us right in the way of the staff. Sorry. Also my friend had a walking stick and couldn't move fast. Perhaps it would be better to have a waitress service or move the specials board. I can see that if you are trying to deliver food it must be difficult negotiating customers, and annoying but as you know there's not much room there. But we are customers. The older lady serving was quite officious and not very friendly, probably frazzled but again without customers there would be no cafe. We ordered and sat. The food arrived, fresh and delicious. Lovely fresh salad with interesting ingredients. We then had to revisit the counter to order cakes and coffee, so getting in the way again. There's a lot of choice so we need to look! Again I felt that we were being looked down on. No smile, no engagement, no conversation, just a look! Shame really. The younger lady serving was however a delight. We weren't difficult and we were having lunch out! Spending in your cafe and keeping the funds local. But the worst bit was while we were eating lunch the 'bin men' arrived to collect and empty a bin. There were two young women with a newborn in a pram at a table in the middle of the cafe. I am assuming 'bin day' or whatever it was they were collecting is the same day of the week?? Would it be an idea to make sure that there isn't a table in the middle of the route, so that they don't have to be disturbed. They were 'moved' with baby out of the way to make way for the very large wheelie bin that was wheeled out and then eventually wheeled back through the cafe. It might not have been rubbish?? who knows, but whatever it was it was intrusive and a little bit disconcerting, especially while we were eating. Very odd! And the toilet was pretty grubby and in need of some TLC. Shame. Disappointing.

This little cafe nestles in the back of the gift shop and has plenty of seating inside and out. There are chairs for babies and access for disabled but getting through the gift with a pram or wheelchair my be bit of challenge as in not to knock anything off the shelf. There are toilets here and also in the village car park.Car parking is in either the square which is limited or in the car park where the short stay is limited and there is also disabled but there is also a free lon stay car park.we had coffee and sconces which was very pleasant.Afterwards take a walk around the village and find the lovely deli shop or go for the many walks around.

You can easily miss this place as it is located deep within a gift shop. You have to walk right through a rather dark shop to get to the cafe. The coffee and cakes are excellent so it is worth the effort if a little dark in places but there is a conservatory.

Booked for dinner but on arrival, they thought we had booked for buffet, fortunately they had a table for us within a short time so we had a pre-dinner drink in the bar, which is fabulous and then went for a lovely meal in the Bistro, it is a small and intimate restaurant and quite modern and food is served on hot rocks, which you cook yourself to your own taste. Nice concept and food was really lovely BUT find that it gets pretty smoky when it is very busy. This is not a unique concept to us and it was a very nice change. Service was attentive and good and wine selection is great. Little pub at the Langport Arms is friendly and wonderful for pre or post drinks too.

What a delightful place to stay at. We stayed for a couple of nights to visit the surrounding area and had the friendliest welcome and comfortable stay. James, the waiter in the evening, was a credit to them. He helped you choose what to eat and was attentive and friendly. The food was outstanding, especially the fish dishes. The breakfast was the best we have ever had and was cooked to order with local produce. Cannot wait to return.

The chip shop has been closed for a while due to staff going on holiday. Last night we very much enjoyed our chips, chicken and curry sauce.
