Just had a lovely business lunch at Cote St Albans. The restaurant has had a complete make over and reminds me of a typical French brasserie which is very welcome. We were served by a very professional, friendly and knowledgeable waiter called Nikhil. They were offering a good weekday offer on steaks, if you ordered two steaks you received a complimentary bottle of house wine! We ordered the cote de bœuf for two which was cooked medium rare to perfection, was full of flavour and very tender, it came with two sides of your choice and truffled Hollandaise, we upgraded our wine and had a very pleasant bottle of Merlot from the Languedoc region and they discounted the house wine from the bill total. The only very small complaint was that we had two bloody Mary’s, while they were very tasty unfortunately they did not have any Worcestershire sauce which was disappointing, however the manageress dealt with the matter brilliantly, not only did she take the cocktails off the bill but she also sent an email to head office asking if they could supply Worcestershire sauce to the branch. I seriously was not expecting her to do that and it was a very pleasant surprise. We will definitely be returning and I can only highly recommend the restaurant!

I went for dinner with some friends. I found the food ok and the service ok until the manager showed up. Unfortunately they try to overcharge with some drink I did not order. I was at the bar ordering drink after the meal. I have been served from a lovely waitress and for each drink I was paying immediately. The manager (a dark hair polish woman), came and told the waitress to make 4 drinks when I asked for one, telling she was offering the drink. When I asked to pay she wanted to charge me for 5 not even 4 drinks which I did not order, telling me I have to pay because 3 of the drink have been drunk. I refused to pay for something I did not order and left. Also when I asked for a specific wine at the table she brought me another one saying “I asked the waitress and she told me to bring you this”. Am I ordering my drinks or they are deciding what I drink? I understand now why the restaurant was empty and most of the time is. The same manager also when talking at the table literally told me “I am not talking with you” what kind of attitude is that? That is rude and offensive. Never coming back and not recommend to go there. Probably they should find a new and better manager that know how to speak and behave with customers.

I went here with my father for my 40th birthday lunch in February and was blown away! This restaurant should be Michelin starred. From the starter to the dessert it was exquisite & I am hard to please with food. We were served by Esther who was friendly, accommodating, attentive & personable. Will be returning very soon as there are so many more dishes we wish to devour!

The dining experience fell short of expectations. While the service was impeccable, from arrival to payment, including prompt service and helpful wine recommendations, the food quality was subpar. Both the ribeye and sirloin steaks were unsatisfactory; the sirloin, served with butter, and the ribeye, served only with fries, lacked sufficient accompaniments. The ribeye's texture was tough, and the absence of sauce detracted from the overall enjoyment. Desserts were adequate but not exceptional; only the macaron in the mini trio was noteworthy. The hot chocolate was unremarkable, a 5/10 rating at best, lacking richness and depth of flavor, with insufficient, runny whipped cream. Furthermore, an unexpected rodent intrusion disrupted the meal. Improvements in food quality are essential to enhance the overall guest experience.

The french onion soup was completely different & the renowned french beans. That said, the food & wine offers value for money in my opinion & there's plenty on the menu to choose from.

Everything was going well for a while the starter and mains were delicious, however we waited 30 minutes for our deserts and service seemed lacklustre as a whole, no check back or decent acknowledgment from management that we had waited for so long, especially when we had an hour and a half time slot for our table for valentines. We went to cote for a long over due date night our first in over a year and was very disappointed. There was a long wait for the main course, even though we were dining after the lunchtime rush. My partner ordered steak tartar which is cold and raw so I'm unsure what took so long as my food was lukewarm. The service was not anything to write home about, no one checked our food was OK or offered any further drinks until the main had arrived. Overall I'm very disappointed and upset that we wasted our money and our very rare date night. When it's supposed to be more of a premium restaurant. The toilets also smell like subways and the toilet seat coming off. In comparison to the restaurant chains near which are supposed to be less premium it was lacking.

Return visit to Cote after lovely visits previously. So disappointed. The food was still great but the service was very poor. Our server could not have been less interested - at no point were we asked if everything was ok with our meal and we were not offered more drinks etc. The table was only just big enough to fit two plates on and very cramped seating. Thankfully no-one was on the table directly next to us. Our drinks took ages to arrive - we were halfway through our starters - and only then after we pointed out that they still hadn't arrived. Service charge added to bill. Would have asked to take it off but server was stood holding out the payment machine before we'd even had chance to check the bill. Such a shame. We have always had such a great experience before, but unlikely we will return again.

When it comes to chalk and cheese (I love cheese and hate chalk, for the record) Watford and St Albans are the same when I visited Cote Brasserie...compared to Watford well there is actually no comparison! If St Albans is an Aston Martin DB8, Watford would be a 1960's Lada with no tyres and full of rust. St Albans Cote has attentive staff, chefs would can cook and a great atmosphere...everything the Watford venue doesn't have.

Recently refurbished this restaurant has a chic French style reminiscent of the forties. They offer a two course luncheon below £18 per head with a selection of three dishes. The pate was delicious with the butter and pate served in the appropriate manner not those awful frozen bars of butter! Thoroughly recommended situated in the heart of St Albans a delightful Roman city

We have eaten at Cote St Albans many times and found it excellent. We visited on 2nd January for lunch and it was very mediocre, food quality poor and details like linen napkins now replaced with low grade paper. We dropped in again on the 4th for coffee and it was partly closed off and clearly in deep trouble. No croissants, no pastries, unhappy staff; they are clearly struggling.

Had steak frites which were good and cooked well. The service though on greeting was poor! The lady with glasses that greeted us (at 4pm) said that we had to sit in these specific seats by the door as everything was fully booked. The manner in which she spoke to us was too direct and very unwelcoming. From the time we arrived to the time we left at about 5:30 one couple came into the restaurant! So not only was there poor service when we entered. She lied! Result is that won’t be coming here again as there are other restaurants such as Bills and Dylan’s near by which provide a much better service.

It was an annual lunch with friends, 14 years we have been going out and I think all at Cote St Albans, apart from one. We had a fantastic time, the food as ever was excellent and the service superb. Karina was one of our servers she was delightful and nothing too much trouble. Alex, aka Michael Ball!, was so nice and made our lunch more enjoyable. No hesitation to go back. Thank you all!

Lovely food and great atmosphere but let down by the waiting staff. Probably waited 15 mins before anyone took a drinks order. We visited on a Tuesday and asked if the roast dinner was available (only Sundays apparently), but told by the waiter it's okay because it's pretty disappointing and not worth the money. It was almost like he had received little to no training. Kinda deflated the mood, we were treating ourselves to a pre-Christmas dinner and were left feeling like he would judge anything we ordered. Wouldn't rush back.

accidentally reserved a table for four at 1315 on Friday, rather than the fully booked Saturday and didn't check the detail of the reminders via email. On arrival, front of house were brilliant after I realised my mistake and allowed us to wait at the bar for a free table. Despite a packed restaurant, they managed to fit us in. TOO EXPENSIVE, POOR COOKING (The worse situation...): for a Friday evening dinner for 4 persons in what I'm now considering as only pub food in quality we paid very close to £200.00 while there was only person that had a drink and a glass of wine, the rest of the table had sparkling water. While we had some shared appetizers that I can easily make at home, we had a main course but no desert, just tea/coffee. I had a fillet steak, supposed to be cooked medium, but served as burnt on the outside while most of the meat on the surface and under of the steak was also very dry, close to what you can call beef jerky, the steak had probably spent a little too much time outside the fridge. Only the inside was acceptable. Another person had the salmon but was overcooked and had lost its appeal completely. The two other people had a main as well but qualified as poor to medium in its quality. While we understand it was a busy Friday night, it was also extremely noisy (78dB to 80dB measured on the phone) to the point it was difficult to hear what anyone was saying at the table, as such, the overall experience was poor for roughly £50 per person. We will defintely not go back any time soon, I would avoid it.

The meal and service was very good, especially by our waiter hirohito, and I would recommend especially the 3 course saver menunwhich is very good value and choice. My only comment they offer a Gluten Free menu but not a Dairy Free. Most of the meals have sauces which come as part of the meal and I had very little to choose from suffering a Dairy Intolerance.

My 19 yo son and his girlfriend booked Cote for their first year anniversary last night. Their meal was ok, although the macaron dessert was poor. It was so hard that they were unable to break into it and had to resort to picking it up by hand to try to bite into it. The inside was like hardened honeycomb. They did say the other dessert was fine, and hearing that it was their anniversary, the waiter gave them a glass of something fizzy on the house. Our big gripe is that, when they tried to pay the bill with cash, they were told cash was not accepted. My son was told to find a way of paying by card and had to leave the restaurant to ring me to ask for help. While he was out ringing me, the waiter asked my son's girlfriend how much they wanted to pay by cash. She said all of it and he walked away. When I arrived and spoke to the waiter, he said that he had been thinking that, if they had wanted to pay most by card and a small amount in cash, he would have accepted the cash from them and paid the cash element on his personal card. This was kind of him but probably against some rule or something, and he had not expressed this to them, nor had he offered them the option to split the bill between two cards if they could pay that way (which they could have). I queried the "no cash" policy and the waiter said it was company policy. I pointed out that it is not stated anywhere on their menu or inside or outside the restaurant that they do not accept cash. He agreed, and said that he thought it may be mentioned in the small print somewhere on their website. I have looked and can't find it, so if it is there, it's certainly not clear. While I was looking at the website, I also noticed that there are no prices listed on Cote's own website, although interestingly, prices appear on the menu link that can be accessed through Trip Advisor. Having recently eaten at Prime - just down the road - as a family, I would say the prices were comparable but the experience was far superior at Prime. Overall, the embarrassment that was caused spoiled what should have been a special evening for this young couple.

We popped in for Saturday afternoon lunch and we were seated immediately by a welcoming David in the busy restaurant. It didn't take long for our carafe of wine to appear and we chose from the set menu. We both had soup and she had steak while I chose chicken. The soups came quickly and they were tasty if a bit cool. Our mains were very good and we finished off by sharing some tasty French cheeses. Thank you David for your excellent service.

My dining experience was somewhat mixed. First, the staff were very friendly and polite, but due to a lack of manpower, it took quite a while for anyone to come and assist me, which was inconvenient. The starters and desserts were delightful, showcasing the chef's creativity and attention to detail. However, the main course, specifically the steak, was overcooked, which detracted from the overall meal. While the other dishes performed well, the main course's shortcoming was disappointing. I hope the restaurant can improve its service efficiency and the cooking of the steak to enhance overall customer satisfaction.

Rude staff and bland food. We came in without a reservation and stood waiting for the host who was talking on the phone. We were there for a minute without even getting a look of acknowledgement from them. Bad start! We understand they were busy on the phone but just a look and a smile is all we expect from a host who is supposed to be welcoming people. This should've been our sign to leave but a waiter quickly walked up to us and gave us a table. We ordered two portions of bread which come with butter and olive oil. The waitress brought only one portion of each side. We requested to have the second portion explaining how we ordered two and each should come with both sides. It took a bit of explaining as if this was an unreasonable or unusual request when it was what we were paying for. She walked off to grab the missing items with no apology and without saying anything. My partner also requested ketchup to go with their burger and never received it. Poor people skills and a misunderstanding of their job and how a waitress in a restaurant treats their customers. It felt like asking a grumpy teenager to do us a favour. The rest of the meal was fine although I found my steak disappointing. Tasted more like something I would make at home with supermarket quality meat, edible but not a great experience. Then when we were leaving we said goodbye and thank you to the waiter standing at the door and he completely ignored us! Why stand at the door if you're going to ignore your customers leaving? My impression is that they took the bad reputation of Parisian customer service and left the actual culinary experience in Paris. Côte is 5 minutes away from me but will never be going back again. I'll take bland food but I draw the line at rudeness.

We’ve been coming to Côte St Albans for a while because the food and atmosphere are usually spot on. Sadly, during my last couple of visits, I noticed something that’s really put me off. Two younger guys on the staff seemed to be taking the service charge off bills and pocketing the money themselves instead of it going to the whole team. This didn’t seem like a one-time thing either—it looked like they were regularly taking home quite a bit more than they should, at the expense of their colleagues. I get that service charges are meant to be shared among everyone working hard to make the experience great, and it didn’t sit right seeing a couple of people trying to game the system. I mentioned it to another staff member, hoping they'd take it seriously, but they didn’t seem all that bothered. It was more like a shrug and a ‘we’ll look into it’ kind of thing. Not exactly the response I was expecting. It’s a real shame because I genuinely like this place, and most of the team seem lovely and dedicated. I just hope the management steps up and sorts this out soon, so the service charge actually benefits everyone like it’s supposed to.

Our favourite spot to catch up with our friends every time we come to St Albans. Lovely starters, scallops with peas was amazing and the ribeyes from mains we re cooked perfectly, well presented and accompanied but the tasty truffle chips. Finished with a pistachio pudding and chilled for the restaurant in their cosy garden. Will be back soon!

Cote used to be a real treat, a great experience, the service has always been a bit patchy but it has got consistently worse. The food is of poor quality and the portions are not great either. It’s a real shame, this restaurant used to be a weekly visit, sadly this will almost certainly be our last! The Ivy which is just a few doors away is a far superior experience with very similar pricing!

Visited cote brasserie at at saint albans and was quit disappointed. Did requests a tea with almond milk , and what a surprise, normal milk . Can be a mistake but it only started there We order 2 garden breakfast ( vegetarian option ) and what a surprise , first time I’ve got a vegetarian option with pork sausage and pork bacon . When I complain they bring use another 2 but once again ( my didn’t have mushrooms and my fiancée missing the avocado ) 2 different breakfast although we order the same . I’m a regular at my local core ( Sloane Square - London) and what a disappointing cote this one at saint albans . Maybe ur staff need a bit training ( kitchen for menus , bar for allergies )

Went here Sat morning . Not very busy . Waited 15 mins to be served outside then another 15 mins for coffee ! My Fre ch breakfast was delicious. My husbands full English was good BUT they forgot toast ,orange juice ( the glass had a chip in),we had to ask for the above . Water was eventually offered but never came to table ! Went to counter to pay as no one around ! Paid bill and fortunately we checked it and was charged £12 for my French Toast . They refunded the difference but took 20 mins to organise. We had a lovely evening. It was our 30th wedding anniversary and we were greeted warmly and the anniversary was mentioned. We then were given a complimentary glass of fizz. The food was superb but most of all, our waiter was just brilliant. Friendly, warm, just right with the level of interaction. Really well done to him and to the overall team

What a amazing evening had. My wife and I decided to enjoy a celebratory 13th Wedding anniversary here and it was nothing short of perfection. The food was delicious, ambiance great and staff exceptionally attentive. Claudia in particular was a absolutely star and catered for our every need with a smile. No request was a problem and she made our celebration a joy. Bravo!

We had the best time ever at Cote, St Albans last night. We were escorted into the garden area where we were offered delicious nibbles listening to a young girl singing beautifully with her guitar. We were offered free drinks too. The atmosphere was amazing . After half an hour we went in to eat inside. Delicious cheese souffle and steaks. The staff were amazing friendly and even noticed that I had left my sun hat on the chair and came running after me. Top marks for Cote

We went for brunch with my mum and my two daughters. We have come here several times before. Unfortunately, on this occasion, it wasn't a good experience. We were served quickly enough upon arriving (we had booked) by a friendly waitress for taking the orders but then we had at least 3 different wait staff and they were all fairly slap-dash. Also, whereas usually they bring us a bottle of tap water, we were brought a bottle of mineral water instead so of course we were charged for this. The food came and it was fine, nothing special but as we were sat quite near to the kitchen and the restaurant was far from full we heard quite clearly the wait staff admonishing the kitchen staff for not getting orders right. It was quite heated and at some point quite clearly the kitchen staff was swearing sufficiently loudly for us and the children to hear. Not a particularly pleasant experience. Trying to get the bill took a while and we were in a bit of a rush by then with an appointment to get to, so we ended up having to get up and pay the bill in the middle of all the tables. In Côte, they automatically add a 10% service charge to the bill, but the first friendly member of staff we did have asked how our experience was, so we told her and she kindly offered to remove the service charge for us. This redeemed the experience a little. I wouldn't rush back.

Cote St Albans has always been one of my favourite places to eat - this Sunday evening was no exception the food was delicious; the chicken the duck the salmon. Overseeing everything was the wonderful Karina: always smiling and helpful. Our waiter tonight was Hiroki; this guy was brilliant, so friendly and engaging and attentive. He made the evening even better with glasses of fizz to celebrate my birthday: an unexpected treat. Thank you Hiroki and Karina; you both made our evening really special;))

Ordered a breakfast plate and we wanted to share a yoghurt as well but they didn’t have it, offered a pastry or a fruit bowl instead. The fruit bowl was fresh and delicious. Smoked salmon wasn’t overpowering with the scrambled eggs and toast. Cote Breakfast was delicious. The decor feels luxurious and upscale but the prices were fair. Wish we could have tried more but we left fully satisfied, definitely recommend.

We have been customer’s of the St Albans Cote for a number of years but think it has gone downhill, particularly after our visit this morning. Staff appear untrained and lacking in basic skills. Our coffee arrived well after the breakfast food and wasn’t even hot. Food okay but pricey for what it was. It needs to get much better before we go back.

Lovely place, nice staff, really poor breakfast. Smallest dish of beans I’ve ever seen that had no taste, streaky bacon that was rubbish, a sausage about as large as your thumb and over cooked button mushrooms, £12.45. Everyone needs a profit but if you can’t put something decent on a plate for that money you should charge more and get it right.

This newly-refurbished restaurant is a delight to visit. The decor, lighting and seating is a considerable upgrade to the previous arrangement. Furthermore, the staff, from manager to new trainee, are very customer orientated. Despite numerous teething problems since re-opening, the team go about their business in a professional manner, allowing customers to fully relax and enjoy the experience. Finally, the choice of food is excellent and is produced as one would expect when dining in a restaurant throughout France.

My boyfriend and I have been coming here for years now. The staff are always extremely friendly and recognise us and they wave as soon as we come in and say hi! Both the Chinese and fish and chips menu are great and we’re always so happy with our food. The prices are good and we’re always left satisfied. I can’t praise this place enough and I wish them all the best for the future :)
