Absolutely fabulous place, standard of food is high and consistent. Rooms are elegant and comfortable, vary in size but all are well equipped and beautifully decorated. Staff are a really well oiled machine, superb, you'd be hard pushed to find people who work so well together giving the customers a flawless service.

Booked last minute following a previously fantastic Sunday lunch. Arrived early in service to find the vast majority of tables empty and was offered a table next to the door as we were told the majority of tables were reserved which turned out not to be the case! Starters were good and I ordered the pork chop which James Martin bangs on about endlessly on his show. It was very disappointing, looking lost of the plate accompanied by 10 chips and a drizzle of jus all for £30. Meanwhile the local garage had shut for the night and 5 of its employees had helped themselves to the reserved seats and were merrily effing and jeffing what seemed to be every other word and taking many hands free calls inbetween vaping which we could all hear. I understand this is a "gastro pub" however the difference in ambience between these two visits probably means that we won't return. This was a last minute very special occasion for which we travelled 80 miles and felt more like we should have gone to my local at the bottom of the road.

Booked for the bar, which wasn’t particularly busy. First time we have been even though we live in Tavistock. The prices have put us off before, but we thought we’d give it a try before we moved. We didn’t have a starter just breads to share. The butter (and many other things) comes with very hard pork scratching, so watch your teeth. I had a very nice ox cheek, my husband had a burger, which was nice enough but really frozen chips at this price! Seventy odd pounds for 2 drinks, 2 mains and some bread 😱

Absolutely blown away by The Cornish Arms in Tavistock! As someone who's passionate about food, from Michelin-starred experiences to the perfect fish and chips, I can confidently say this place is a gem. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the service was top-notch, with a friendly manager who added a personal touch. But the real star of the show was the food. I had an Eccles cake with blue cheese – a combination I never would have imagined, but it was a flavour explosion! Every dish was expertly prepared and delicious. This gastro pub is a must-visit for any foodie. Highly recommend!

The Cornish Arms We visit Devon, and specifically Tavistock, at least once a year, sometimes twice for long weekends. Each time, we make sure to set aside time for a visit to The Cornish Arms for afternoon drinks and dinner. It's a fantastic pub, and the food is exceptional. We’re particularly fond of the Cornish chicken curry, braised rice, cucumber yogurt, flatbread, and toasted almonds. Sunday lunch here comes highly recommended too. However, our most recent visit left us feeling a bit disappointed. We were in Tavistock for our wedding celebration, and it was also my father’s 75th birthday. To mark the occasion, we planned to enjoy a meal with 12 to 15 people, and naturally, I recommended The Cornish Arms. We made a reservation without hesitation. We arrived early to enjoy a pre-meal drink in the garden, found a nice spot, and I went to the bar to let them know we were there. I asked if it would be better to order drinks at the bar or have someone come over, and they kindly offered to send someone down to us. No problem there. However, there was a significant wait before anyone came to take our order. Eventually, someone arrived, and we placed our drink order. After that, the waiting continued. We didn’t mind too much, as we weren’t in a rush, but after a while, I had to ask about the delay. Finally, the drinks arrived — hurrah! The trouble started shortly after that. We were told by a gentleman, who I believe was the manager, that our table was ready. We explained that, due to the delay in getting our drinks, we’d appreciate just a few more minutes to finish them. To my surprise, we were told no, in quite a curt manner. To make matters worse, he added that if we didn’t want the table, he’d give it to someone else. I was really taken aback. We weren’t asking for much — maybe 15 minutes — and I would have understood if we had been late, but the delay was on their end. To be met with that response, especially after recommending the place, felt both unwelcoming and embarrassing. We were about to spend a significant amount — £40 per person plus drinks, including half a dozen bottles of wine (the cheapest being £27), bringing our total bill to around £600-700 — and yet this was the treatment we received. While this incident hasn’t put me off The Cornish Arms completely, it will certainly linger in the back of my mind, making future visits less enjoyable.

An overall excellent experience! The room we stayed in was called Toad , a double room with a large and extremely comfortable bed. The bedding was luxurious. The room was very clean, great coffee machine, shower, robes and toiletries. We met with family and had a meal in the restaurant. The food was phenomenal! There were 5 adults , we all had a starter and a main meal , everything came out perfect. The staff serving us were all very polite, knowledgeable and genuinely seemed interested and in making our experience to be a good one. I have to also mention Toshi, (I hope I have spelt this correctly) He was very welcoming , he served breakfast. He was attentive , very friendly, professional and all with a smile! Breakfast was fantastic! Would definitely recommend to stay over and eat here. The only one thing I would change would be to be able to turn off the radiator in the bedroom, it was very warm and we couldn’t totally turn it off.

Definitely lived up to the hype! The pub itself is nice with a cosy atmosphere. All of the staff were really friendly. The roast was delicious. All of the veg was tasty and full of flavour, and the cauliflower cheese was great. I was unsure about vegetarian options so I emailed in advance and received a helpful response straight away. The vegetarian tart was served as a roast - I was a little unsure what it would be like with a poached egg but this was inside the tart and the flavours worked so well! Will definitely return and have recommended to others. The only slight negatives were that my drink was initially served in a dirty glass (which was quickly replaced) and at times the service was slow and disjointed - it was almost like there were too many staff as I think we had at least 5 different people taking our order/bringing our meals/clearing the table. Desserts seemed a little overpriced.

The food was delicious. We had looked forward to our lunch today for quite some weeks and we certainly weren’t disappointed. Our starters (French onion soup with amazing croutons and the pheasant‘scotch’ egg) were scrumptious; my venison was cooked to perfection and my friends bream was perfectly cooked and the dressing complimented it beautifully; we both had the seasonal rhubarb trifle with strawberry sorbet and they were as light as air and the rhubarb was Al dente and not in the slightest sharp. Our servers were all very knowledgeable and attentive and always willing to answer any queries we had. Thank you- we have no qualms about recommending The Cornish Arms to everyone. First class.

We were there for an early dinner; thankfully, we booked. The fact that the restaurant and bar were crowded is testimony to the quality of the food. The menu was seaonal, traditional and fresh British ingredients, prepared with skill and innovation. Husband had the venison, I had the sea bass (wild of course), daughter had the vegetable tart. Everything was superb, including our starters. There are so few good restaurants left now in Tavistock, but the Cornish is right up there as one of the best.

It is not often I'm impressed to this degree. This is a pub with rooms that is distinctly different. It oozes warmth and cosiness, with a vein of top quality service running right through it and the two are quite intoxicating! We booked late, having returned from Spain and requested a booking for dinner, a room and the ability to bring our small dog. This was seamless and was handled exactly as it should be. We were greeted by smiles and a genuine welcome, nothing fake, nothing too much trouble. Our table was reserved by the fire as requested and an offer of help with our bags. The bar was beautifully run, its tasteful country pub vibe draws you in. The room we stayed in was very well put together, quality bedding, furnishings and muted colours gave an instant relax, toiletries with real essential oils provided, these are locally made and a big difference from off the shelf products provided by even the very best of hotels! No dog bed, cheap dog treats of waste bags were left, which was just refreshing! Not only did this room deliver luxury wise, it was well thought out and 'worked' needless to say it was immaculately clean, The food.....well this was close to perfect, the steak one of the best I have had, cooked exactly right and the sauces were 'clever' rich but not too rich, just delightful! and the onion rings were the best I have tasted . The smoked haddock omelette championed the wonderful quality fish that was used and the vegetable tart was beautifully made with a salad that complimented it perfectly. Breakfast delivers on the same level, too which is rare!! Absolute class act of a gastro pub, thank you for the wonderful experience

There is a lovely menu if you dont want plain food, we only had chips and soup as the prices put off others in the party, but the sizes of portions of both were small. Not a proper sized bowl of soup which was delicious, nor enough to fill you up and the bread burnt and bitter. I feel they work hard on presentation amd all the little posh bits in or on it but fail to give good value for money. We walked out without feeling we had filled the hunger. We only ate at the Cornish Arms. It's one of the few places open between lunch and dinner in Tavistock, which we found surprising. Food and service was lovely.

This is a lovely Restaurant/Pub, great staff, fantastic food and really good beer. My wife and I used this pub both for food and several times just for a drink. They have a lovely beer garden at the rear of the pub, also a restaurant and bar meals and snacks.

Amazing service and food! Had the pleasure of staying overnight at this superb gastro Inn, received a warm welcome from Steve who showed us to our beautifully appointed room, which was spotless and extremely comfortable. Our meal was simply delicious, every course. Extremely courteous and friendly staff, we will be back!

We visit the Cornish Arms from time to time and it seems to be even better each time. The service is efficient, friendly and thoughtful and seems very natural. The restaurant is comfortable and the tables close together but not cramped. We tend for visit for the Sunday lunch which is delicious: well cooked, well presented and just the right-sized portions. Today we had the pork which has two different cuts both juicy and cooked perfectly. The sides are made and presented beautifully and theres even extra gravy! There’s a wide range of drinks as you’d expect from a pub. Dog-owners are seated in the bar area. The whole experience is just lovely and great value for money.

10/10 would recommend the food. Would specifically travel to have this again. The ox cheek and the lamb were some of the best I’ve ever had! Bit pricey but definitely worth it!

If you’re ever anywhere near Tavistock in Devon, go to the Cornish Arms in West Street… absolutely superb! My roasted loin of cod with a dill bernaise sauce in a peppercorn bisque was unbelievable and the accompanying chips were possibly the best I’ve ever had! Whilst I can’t personally verify, my wife enthused equally about her fillet of moorland beef! Our main courses were so good, I almost forgot to mention our starters, which were a ham hock scotch egg and a duck liver pate with candied hazelnuts and toasted brioche respectively, both wonderful. They came second in the Gastro Pub Awards this year, but I struggle to believe they didn’t win! And, by the way, the service is also excellent!

We was happy with majority off the service we received. We go At least once a week, as we really enjoy it here. We decided to order a sharer board, and it was worst mistake, it just had 90/95% off salad and leaves and not much food, for the price it was.
