We have dined here tonight can 100% guarantee we will be back. Drove up from Liverpool for an event, saw Corner Grill and wanted to give it a go. Food was absolutely superb, staff very professional warm and welcoming. Beautiful venue. Thanks so much all the team at this fabulous restaurant.

I do not like steak usually, but I ordered one after seeing another couple's arrive, and I do not regret my decision. Great food and ambience. The restaurant is also next to where the best walking ghost tour in York starts from (which we went on)

We were visiting York for some Christmas shopping and decided to try this restaurant. What a lovely little find. The staff were lovely the food was gorgeous, the atmosphere was cosy but a little quiet as it was a Monday night. One of us had steak and the other, the chicken. We both had a starter and shared a bottle of wine. I would definitely come here again. Keep doing what you are doing.

This restaurant has a small capacity so prior booking is strongly recommended. Due to its size, it does feel slightly cramped. We were quick to be seated and served (including food which we were pleasantly surprised about considering the large party also in). We both ordered fillet steak, which was lovely but they both came rarer than ordered. The medium-rare was rare and the medium-well was medium at most. The food was delicious though and we would return.

Excellent food and service, I would highly recommend!

Nice meal, but not amazing. Arrived early at 4.45pm and the restaurant was quiet. The waitress was really nice and even turned the loud music down so we didn't have to shout during our meal. We had the sharing platter (chorizo, creamy prawn, baked mushrooms) this was amazing. We then both had the Tbone and it was massive. We hate to waste food but we just couldn't eat it...the portion size was really for two people to share. The Tbone's were well cooked but they weren't the best we have had and were fatty and dry in places and not that flavorful. By now the restaurant was getting busy and the music had been turned back up again...why do restaurants have to have music playing all the time🤨 is the art of conversation dead? Most tables were setup for two with couples of all ages... Romantic or not meals, it's actually nice to be able to hear your partner during a meal.

I have to add this but please take no notice of the review just below this from the person who felt the need to complain about their meal/s. We had to endure sitting next to them but we laughed it off as we just couldn’t relate any of it to our experience!! The staff couldn’t do enough to ensure they were having a nice meal but some people can never be pleased! (Their food can’t of been that bad as there was nothing left on their plates!) Moving onto my review! The place was pretty busy for a Wednesday night, good crowded atmosphere when we walked in. We ordered the chilli prawns to start which where excellent and I have to say the waiting on staff where brilliant and very attentive, probably the best I’ve come across in a long time (since covid changed the face of eating out to some degree!) We then shared the 20oz T bone steak with three sides as a main. My only point to note would be the chips did taste a little dry and “frozen style”. But the steak, glazed carrots and garlic mushrooms were perfect! Home made tripple cooked chips would have been perfect. But not enough to knock a star off for though as the steak was superb. Thanks for a lovely meal!

I went here with my wife! The Ox Cheek was particularly good and tender, the service lovely! The price was absolutely fair! A must go!

This was the first time we had visited since they moved from merchant gate. The place is OK the stater was fine I had garlic prawns the wife had garlic mushrooms, then we waited over 40 minutes for our mains the wife had ox cheek it was OK.I had the 60 day salt aged ribeye steak £32.Now to be honest I have had better steaks from Asda that cost £7 for two and the roasted new potatoes that came with it were terrible and the creamed leaks were all watery,as may gather from this review we will not be going back which is a shame because we loved the place when it was in merchant gate.

Superb meal cooked just right great birthday meal

Despite my eager to like that place, I cannot say the experience was great. We ordered 2 rib eye steaks. I ordered rare and my partner medium rare. First: I don’t think my steak was rare. It was closer to medium rare. Second: I’m not sure if the rib eye was prime quality, many pieces of the meat was hard to chew and I didn’t spot a lot of juice in my meat, which gives me a clue, it was select beef. On the good side: my partner liked the food and mushrooms side was nicely cooked.

Food, Service, & atmosphere were ALL exquisite. Lidia, our server, was exceptional. Gr8 night. 👍

We ate here on September 18th, 2024 and had a fantastic experience. The service was great (our server was helpful, efficient and funny), there were a wide variety of choices on the menu, and everything we had was delicious. Would definitely come back.

Very good food. Well prepared and friendly service. Definitely will be going back. Baked mushrooms were sooo good. Aged steak and ox cheak we melt in your mouth delicious. Tiramisu martini also a big hit.

From the moment we walked through the door to leaving it was professional. The waitress was just the perfect amount of attention and leave you to your own devices. Food was 6 star, as we had the basic set menu it was worth twice the price. Very happy and would gladly return (the next day!). Music in the background was good choice.

Went for dinner a few weeks back with my partner, I chose this restaurant as it had good reviews. And I can see why! It was absolutely amazing! I had the lamb with mint gravy, horseradish mash and carrots. It was so delicious I enjoyed every mouthful! My partner had the Cajun chicken with crispy new potatoes and broccoli. He said the sauce was amazing and the chicken was cooked perfectly. I can’t complement it enough! The desserts were amazing as well! We had the sticky toffee pudding and the chocolate brownie. The only thing I questioned was the sticky toffee pudding wasn’t heated up but the brownie was which I thought should be the other way or both warm instead. That was the only thing I can think of I would change it was all amazing I would definitely recommend if you’re in York to eat here! I wish I lived closer so I can eat here all the time!

Really disappointing, to be honest. Had read reviews and was looking forward to a real steak experience. Have genuinely had better steaks in chain pubs. I went for the '60 day aged porterhouse', which turned out, sadly, not to be a proper porterhouse (it didn't have both sides to it), and was almost totally lacking in flavour, even at medium rare. Sides were also very, very average. Won't be going back.

It's been three days and I'm still thinking about how nice the steak was.

We are here in York for a couple of days with my Sister in law and Brother in law. We visited the Corner Grill House last night and had the 3 course set menu which was £30 each. Our relatives had the ox's cheek and we opted for a steak with side dishes of creamed leeks and honey glazed carrots. Everything was delicious, in fact we all agreed that even though we eat out quite often in various locations, this was up there with the very best of meals we'd ever had in a restaurant including much higher priced ones like the Ivy at London, Brighton and Exeter or the Hard Rock Cafe in London which we've been to a few times. their Garlic Mushrooms were amazing!!!!! Without doubt the best we've ever tasted. The steaks were tasty and done to perfection and the lemon tart with raspberry sauce was also superb! Finally no perfect dining experience is complete without the waiting staff and Emma was excellent, smiley, personable and very efficient in taking our initial orders and our drinks orders. Quality classy staff do make a difference and she was exactly that. As you can probably guess we would all highly recommend you visit the Corner Grill House to sample for yourself this perfect dining experience.

Hidden Gem of a steak house. The meat was cooked to perfection! The creamed leaks were slightly over salted but not to a point where I couldn't eat them. And the horseradish mash was superb. Also do a couple of, good and clearly marked, GF options for all 3 courses, and my coeliac partner has had no issues since dining there 24 hours later. As a vegetarian as well she had the mushroom risotto and I of course had a taste. Beautifully cooked and the sauce was flavourful and creamy. Would recommend to anyone for a nice celebratory occasion.

Maybe it's because I visited after a late lunch, soso I set the cooking level to medium/medium-walnut, but I think it should be medium-rare. We each ordered a 2-course menu and a bottle of wine.

Decided to go for the set menu for dinner and it didn’t disappoint. The steak was cooked perfectly and the desserts were incredible.

My BF chose this place due to the high rating. Needless to say that it did NOT LIVE UP to the expectations. The only good thing were the sides - tasty indeed, but the main piece the MEAT - a HUGE disappointment. First of all, my steak was served quite cold, and even though I asked for a well cooked steak, never ever have I had such a dry steak before! It was difficult to chew on it because it was that dry! I always order well cooked but it is never to the level of dried out meat! I thought they messed up only with my dish, but my boyfriend s was not spectacular either - he ordered a matured prime rib steak and it was very average-not much taste or difference than a regular one ( very ordinary). Considering the price I suggest you spend your money elsewhere. Also, I informed the waitress that my meat came cold (she said probably because of the resting time) and offered to make me another one but I refused as I wasn’t expecting better….Not to mention that the red glass of wine I ordered was served way too warm …Customer service on the positive note.

Went here for pre theatre dinner. Had made a reservation so was seated immediately in our choice of locations. Interior decor very nice and restrained no blasting out music. Staff were very helpful and obliging. Food was excellent quality and decent portions for the price. Very reasonable amount charged for 3 person's having 2 courses plus drinks. Ox cheek and lamb rump were melt in the mouth, great veg and potato sides. Weren't rushed in any way. Able to eat at our own pace. Would definitely return and recommend.

Garlic prawns starter and baked mushrooms with parmesan, both delicious and creamy, highly recommend. Main course of Flat iron steak and ox cheek, the best we've had in a long time. Great food all round, highly recommend and excellent service. Well done !

We were disappointed after having read so many positive reviews. Firstly, the service was excellent - so thanks to the staff. After that - not so good. The restaurant is quite small and cramped, and quite noisy. The food was the biggest disappointment however. Two of us had steaks - they were quite dry and salty. They came with one half of a tomato and a mountain of chips. It wasn't the best steak I've had and not a very appetizing meal. My wife's main dish was Pea.and mint risotto. It was very strongly flavoured with black pepper, to the point that it was unbearably hot (and my wife likes a strong curry). No trace of mint flavour. Something in the kitchen must have gone badly wrong. The fourth main dish was sea bass, and that was very nice. When my wife complained about the risotto, the price of the dish was removed from the bill (good because she couldn't eat it), but no one seemed interested in the specifics of why it was poor. I expect the next dish went out the same. All in all, we felt disappointed at our choice for our special occasion.

Steak and Ox Cheek was sublime. Food cooked as requested, presentation superb. As good a steak as I've tasted in a couple of years (was the old Corner Grill!!). Service excellent and looked after us. Only reason for 4 stars is I do not give 5 stars ,ever. But 4 needs to be earned and by God it was. Once again thanks to the CGH management and excellent staff

I worked at Corner Grill House for an extended period while I was a student, and while there were positive aspects, I feel compelled to share my experience honestly. In terms of the working environment with colleagues, it was good. The professional atmosphere fostered teamwork, and I genuinely appreciated the positive interactions with my coworkers. As an employee, I took pride in being part of a team that consistently delivered high-quality dishes to our customers. Additionally, the efficient service ensured that guests had a pleasant dining experience. Unfortunately, the owner’s management style left much to be desired. His stern demeanor and high expectations often created tension. Colleagues who had left before me shared similar sentiments. One area that requires attention is transparency. Specifically, the process related to holiday entitlement and tips lacked clarity. When I requested my holiday entitlement, the owner’s response was dismissive, leaving me wondering about the fairness of the calculations and whether everyone received their due entitlement. Notably, the holiday entitlement was supposedly calculated following HMRC guidelines; however, upon checking with HMRC, I discovered that the amount I received was significantly less than expected. For only £200, which may seem like a small sum, it’s strange that he acted this way—especially considering I was doing the same job as others on minimum wage for 18-20 year-olds. I also want to emphasize that I willingly worked extra days, including holidays when others didn’t come. This dedication reflects my commitment and hard work during my time at Corner Grill House. My departure was marked by disappointment. It’s my hope that the restaurant can improve its practices and prioritize fairness for all employees.

Food excellent, service out of this world the waitress that served me was always smiling and very pleasant

Had breakfast at the weekend which was lovely. The food tasted great, presentation was great too. The place looks fantastic inside, a lot of.thought has gone into the interior decor. Really impressive!

The salmon and sirloin were amazing, but best of all were the sides. All 4 sides were incredible - carrots, garlic mushrooms, truffle Parmesan fries, and salad.

Came here with my partner after reading glowing reviews on the food and it did not disappoint. We ordered the T-Steak with 3 sides and shared it between us. The portion size was perfect for us both and the steak was cooked medium to perfection and we both enjoyed every bite. The sides were also excellent, full of flavour and cooked brilliantly. The staff were also very welcoming and friendly and the overall experience was top notch. Will definitely be coming back whenever I'm back in York.

Fabulous Meals to end a Wonderful Day in York. We did Mains 2 Steak Meals & 1 Lamb all Succulent, Cooked exactly as requested.

A little quiet at 5:30pm which didn't help with the atmosphere but the food was excellent and the staff amazing. Highly recommend the Ox Cheek as this is cooked perfectly.

This restaurant is a small one with little seating but the steaks are absolutely amazing melt in your mouth blocks of heaven. I luckily got a table here whilst I was in York for business and I’m glad I chose this place for dinner. Excellent service too.

Lovely little place with fantastic food and drink

As my partner and I arrived, we were offered a table right next to the counter. I asked if we could sit by the window and was refused by the waiter, who said they were fully booked and couldn't move people around. We then proceeded to watch several other couples and families arrive and be offered a table of their choosing, including those by the window. The waiter then took our order making little condescending comments to hurry us up, even though we were not taking long at all, including "your two sides now quickly". He proceeded to be dry and unpleasant throughout the evening. Did not say thank you once. The food was average. Overpriced for what you get. My partner, for some reason had a much smaller portion of chips than mine. They looked like the McCain's oven cooked chips. A couple next to us returned their plates, as the meat was not cooked as ordered. Not the worst, but for the price and experience I won't be returning.

Absolutely fantastic find in the center of York. Tucked away between the main streets and the river, this little restaurant (which is actually quite big inside) packs a mean punch when it comes to serving steaks. We had the Salt Aged Rib Eye and the Porter House Steaks and they were the best steaks we've had in a long time. Beautifully seasoned and the mains included two sides of choice. Each steak meal priced at around £36, it was actually great value. Wine very reasonable priced and we enjoyed a delicious Malbec with our meal. Fantastic Service and very welcoming. Modern and clean interior. Not a place we could take our dog but all the same it was worth it! Great meal out.

Well, I wasn't sure where to go for a meal on my recent trip to York but after a quick search on TripAdvisor I thought this place had potential to be just what we were looking for. And I was not disappointed at all! The food was very well cooked, well presented and their kitchen team clearly knows what they're doing. the service from Emily was nothing short of perfection. The wine was also very well selected and varied, Very well done to all, we will be back 👌

Seabass and steak were fantastic tonight. Those potatoes under the seabass were amazing!

Visiting York from the U.S. My Husband and I shared the 20oz aged T-bone with 3 sides. The steak was delicious and cooked to perfection. For side we got the glazed carrots, garlic mushrooms and creamed leeks. All delicious. The Waitress was polite and timely. Restaurant is warm, cozy and comfortable. I only wish they had more dessert options.

What an outstanding evening, my fiancé and I were in York for the night and decided before we even came to town we wanted to try your "life changing steak experience". Boy were we in for a treat, the server we had (I'm sorry I didn't get her name) was absolutely lovely, from the moment we walked through the door she greeted us with a smile and was extremely pleasant, friendly and knowledgable about each dish. The food was brought in a good time, the starters we had were the mixed grill and the creamy mushrooms, when I bit in to the mustard chicken I made a noise and my fiancé said "I've never heard you make that noise from chicken before" haha. It was delicious and not overpowered with mustard which I had worried about beforehand, the steak on there was cooked beautifully and the salad was just the right amount, you even supplied me with some fried bread to dip in my fiancé's mushroom sauce, top marks for that as its usually the other way round. Then came the steaks, my fiancé had the fillet and I had the 60 day salt aged rib eye. WOW. That's all I can say. It has to be tried to be believed, it was so flavourful and cooked to perfection. Your chefs truly are chefs and not just kitchen assistants, as with so many places these days. We have already been looking at when we can make another trip to York just so we can sample some other delights from your menu. Thank you all so much for a truly wonderful evening. We will be back.

Just popped in as a solo hungry fella after work. Was v cold outside but inside was warm a welcoming. The hostess very polite & friendly.. I dined on an 8oz fillet & it was stunning. Cooked rare as asked... Side veggie n fries top notch.. Great quick meal at a great price... Deffo worth a visit.

Great food great service steak was amazing

Top class steak. We had some salt stored beef served blue with Parmesan fries and garlic mushrooms. A quiet Monday in York and the waitress was lovely, and kept the right level of attention and distance. Panna gotta for dessert, with a lovely wobble and beautiful fruit compote. Lemon possit was Fab too.

Great steak and the service was excellent

Absolutely fantastic meal and atmosphere! We ordered the salt aged porter house and the rib-eye, both of which were beautifully cooked and very flavoursome. I highly recommend the truffle and parmesan fries and the creamed leeks as sides. I live in York and eat at a lot of the restaurants, and for me this was a stand out experience.

The owner started young, learning his trade and working his way up some of York's best kitchens and it shows. If you enjoy great meat this is the place.

I was staying at the Hilton around the corner and their restaurant said there is a 2 hour wait, so I immediately looked up where is a good steak place to eat near me, and Corner Grill House was the top choice. I didn’t hesitate and went straight there, at first I was told it is booked as well, and I would have to come back later, and to my luck someone just paid and I had the first available table. Service was amazing, the atmosphere was perfect, and the steak I had was exactly what I was looking for!! I highly recommend this place for anyone wanting great service and great food. You will not be disappointed.

Had a birthday meal with friends here. The steak was cooked perfectly, the sides are delicious and just as I was expecting. A good selection of wines, beers and soft drinks. Great experience, thanks 💯

A bit pricey but the steaks were delicious. They ran out of the T-bone steak before we could order one, but we had the ribeye and the porter and they were tasty! Very nice service as well.
