A time capsule of work-class London. No fancy decorations, just proud family memories. Calm and friendly service. We came here to try the historic jellied eel. It’s actually nice, better than the appearance. Not fishy at all. Just natural flavor. I actually like the texture lol, especially as someone who loves fish skin. I can actually imagine it in a Michelin star restaurant with British history theme— transparent jelly, floating piece of eel, flowers, drop of liquor sauce lol. The pie is also unique. Not the more common pub versions. Looks and tastes like minced beef dumpling soaked in parsley soup. Mash is nice, solid potato and not too oily with extra cream or butter. Chili vinegar is tasty. The pie can be slightly warmer though.

Travelled halfway across the world for this. Had a 2-week vacation in London and by far this was the best meal I had here. Hands down. Met with the owner, Mr. Joe Cooke. The most pleasant man I have met in the whole of London. Till this day after this wonderful meal, I still have no idea how gently he was holding those pies (a little inside joke for ya, https://youtu.be/ogfyJICT9aI?feature=shared). God bless pie, mash and parsley liquor. God bless jellied eels. God bless Joe. May this establishment last for the next hundred years and more. (To best enjoy this meal, I recommend getting the large pie and mash with parsley liquor, with a side of jellied eels with a cold can of coke)

I’d been meaning to get to a pie and mash shop in London and real authentic taste of London. After doing some research at New Southgate Cemetery around 16:15, I realised that this place shuts at 17:00 and faced a mad dash for pie and mash. I wasn’t disappointed, arrived about 16:30, there were two people in there but one person I believed may have been the owner. I ordered large pie and mash with liqueur, not knowing what ‘liqueur’ was, but ordering it anyway. Quite simply, it was lovely, I’m not a big mash fan but it was beautifully done and the pie was so tasty, combined with the liqueur sauce it was a hearty and fulfilling meal. I even went as far as sending photos to my mate and Mum. The mate who claims to be a Londoner, had know idea what it was, so clearly not a real Londoner ! Pleasant atmosphere listening to the lady behind the counter and chap, who I may have believed to be the owner, talking shop and conversing back and forth with cockney accents that you could have rolled up and beaten someone over the head with. I only spent half an hour but if I’m ever down that way I’d like to return and definitely recommend. As I left and said goodbye the chap said, “See you later son, mind how you go”, which tickled me. It’s the London I’ve always wanted to experience and a perfect end to a day and well worth a mad dash from New Southgate Cemetery !

Time finally came, and I was not disappointed I got what I expected. Pie was delicious and mashed potato like your mum makes it at home. The so-called liquor that comes with it was also my taste. Some recommended adding some vinegar to it. Service was kind, and we had a chance to see and talk to the owner as well. He is a down to earth easy to chat with person, and it was a pleasure indeed. Very nice, family run (for almost 4 decades) traditional English pie shop - complete with the parsley “liquor” poured on the pies and mash, as well as very interesting, cold jellied eels. I will say that this food is not for everyone and perhaps that reflects in the reviews. However, the people who run it are friendly and welcoming, the food was hearty and filling (add vinegar!), and the mug of coffee went along nicely - no complaints - simple and good, just the way it should be.

I am American and the first time I visited London, I went straight to F. Cooke. I had a really cool adventure walking through London to get there and experiencing the city. I loved the place. It kind of feels like you are eating at your grandmother by the looks of it. The food itself was also good, the pie and mashed potatoes were great, the green sauce thing was a little too... strong (?) by itself, but with a touch of malt vinegar it is also good and it matches the pie really well. Unfortunately I wasn't brave enough to try the Eel, but i kind of regret it, i will surely try it next time. I was very confused to see sawdust on the floor and asked a very kind lady (who was a sweetheart by the way, very friendly!) who told me it was tradition as eel is very fat and the floor got slippery. Overall, a really cool experience, I totally recommend the place for anyone visiting with a disclaimer: It looks nasty, but it's actually quite tasty, simple food. ps: it was also my very first tea with milk ever, pretty good.

I think it is similar to experiences I had at other very traditional restaurants around the world: cozy atmosphere but flavor is quite plain.
