It's a surprise this end of the Hackney Road doesn't have more restaurants offering decent brunch fare. Mr Buckley's offer a lot, though the room feels quite dark with peculiar plastic lanterns hanging around. It is very popular, especially at weekends, but makes for a decent pit-stop between Columbia Road and Broadway Market.

Went here at my Hackney-dwelling daughter's suggestion though it's in the rougher, not-much happening end of Bethnel Green as far as I could see. Fairly unprepossessing outside and inside just a long room with simple wooden tables - reminded me of the mezzanine bar at the nearby Redchurch Brewery. Service was good and friendly. The menu is relatively short, and follows the current vogue for blurring the lines between starters, tapas and main, with most dishes being difficult to visualise, their descriptions generally consisting of a list of ingredients. But every dish was on point: buttermilk bread with two spreads; Padrón peppers; Beets, Pumpkin & goat’s curd milk; King oyster mushroom, brussels, aubergine & miso; deliciously juicy burger and fries; belly pork; chargrilled pepper with cauliflower rice and goats cheese. All well cooked and seasoned perfectly. Didn't examine the wine list but they have a short list of craft ales including Beavertown and Camden. Espresso was OK. though a bit too short without being intense enough to compensate. Will definitely go again.

Something between tapas and main meals, the food was excellently cooked and really delicious. The service was attentive, friendly and considerate. It's not cheap but two of us enjoyed three main dishes and a dessert with a cocktail and a beer for £55 including service charge as part of a birthday dinner celebration for a friend. Recommended for a group outing or an intimate dinner. There is a bar downstairs and they do play music upstairs and down.

Went for drinks with a group of friends. The place was pretty empty and smelt like cleaning products. The people working there seemed to prefer chatting amongst themselves to really serving us. Cocktails are too pricey for what they are - there are a few cocktail bars within walking distance that are cheaper and provide a much better service and atmosphere. I'm local to Mr Buckleys and always wondered why it looks quiet and now I know!

This is the 2nd time I have visited Mr Buckley's - the first being a good year or so ago. It's still a great place for an honest tasty burger, but it also has so much more to offer. My wife and I had the sumac covered calamari which were perfectly cooked and not greasy; 2 burgers with proper 'brioche style' bun and ever so crispy fries. The very best bit though were the deep fried rosemary and honey glazed chicken with chipotle peppers. Outstanding. Its reasonably priced, rather than cheap and has a lovely intimate atmosphere. They do a whole range of great sounding cocktails too- but we didn't try them.A great fun place to go to with really good food in its class I think.

Mr Buckley's was recommended by a friend and we weren't disappointed. Although it's not in the most salubrious area of East London, the restaurant is warm and inviting and the service was excellent. The menu offered a good range of dishes although, confusingly, it is split into jars, starters, mains and deserts. Although some diners said that this was more like a tapas bar, we were not encouraged to order several small dishes so ordered 2 jars and 2 starters plus mains for the four of us.The food was all delicious and very good value for money, as was the wine. My only quibble is with the final bill. Although we'd already had quite a bit of wine, we ordered some whiskies and mixers. Unbeknown to us, these arrived as triple Cutty Sark' although we had just asked for a whisky and ginger. So our reasonably-priced meal came to £270!! (dinner for four, drinks for five, only one dessert). A silly scam which left us with a bad taste in our mouths!!

Having gone passed this place regularly for a while I was eager to try. I checked out the menu online edits and it gave a really accurate feel for the place. It's got an intimate New York kind of vibe, or maybe that's just an intimate Hackney vibe? The staff were really attentive and friendly, they were also happy to help with our questions.Between me and my girlfriend we sharing dish to start (rabbit terrine, it was actually my favourite!), a shared starter and a main each. We opted for a bottle of house red which was reasonably priced and went down very well.In total it came in at around £60/70 with tip (If I remember right) which seems to be pretty much standard for anywhere around East London now. With that in mind the food and service stood out and we're definitely worthwhile. Will be back soon.

They source they're food locally, aiming to reduce the carbon footprint of each meal. The staff are always welcoming and down to earth, and the cocktails are good to boot! With an extensive drinks list, its nice knowing that the cocktail also are regularly updated and worked alongside what is on the menu. Can't recommend this place highly enough. If like me authenticity is your bag then I suggest you hit up this hidden gem as soon as you can. Having asked a member of staff if it was part of a chain I was met with the story of a pyromaniac chef from the 1800s named William Buckley (hence the name) who tried to burn the place down with 200 odd soles in it!! Obviously this isn't the only reason I suggest you visit Mr. Buckley's; the menus fantastic, there's the option to share and order a bit of everything or dine traditionally with a starter, main etc. The service is relaxed and attentive - the perfect mix in my eyes - and my favorite thing... free still or sparkling water!!

After spending Saturday downstairs in the cocktail bar- great vibes, music from DJ & reasonably priced cocktails, I decided to try the food last night. Now Hackney Road is not my normal hood, working in the City & living in Vauxhall but it was a short cab journey to a heavenly gastro experience. From the Camden pale ale on draught to the great music(again), everything was just spot on. A choice of 5 bar foods, 5 great starters including shin of beef on toast with ale mustard and scallops on a bed of shredded celeriac, and 5 scrumptious mains, the menu was just great. My party of 5 had the above two starters plus sardines with a salsa. For mains fillet of sea bass, welsh lamb and confit of chicken tempted us. We had drinks at the upstairs bar- cocktail bar only open Thursday to Sunday evenings- but without obligatory service charge and 5 starters, 5 mains plus 3 sides and two bottles of wine for £189 including 12.5%, plus esspressos all round. Very drinkable Pinot Noir- I did not taste the Sauvinon Blanc. Hailed a black cab outside but there is a minicab office 200 metres south on the Hackney Road plus Boris bike station close by. Do yourselves a favour and try it out- it won't be a secret for long!!

Answer: When four starters and one dessert are not on the menu; when the wine is served at room temperature; when the music is so loud you have to shout to your companions across the table; when there is seemingly one (albeit decent) waiter working the entire restaurant on the busiest night of the week. The food was ok (not great) but this was one of the worst dining experiences in the last decade.

Arrived to a sign on the stairs saying "please wait to be be seated". After standing there for 10 minutes later walked to the bar at the end of the first floor to tell them I had a reservation. Seated downstairs. Told which two starters (potted prawns and another one) were not available. Ordered to be told that the pate starter was also not available, re-ordered sardines and then 10 minutes later told that starter was not available. Not a great start. It was only 9pm on a Saturday night. Ordered white wine which arrived luke warm. Every time we wanted to ask our waiter anything we had to find him as he was mainly upstairs and no other waiting staff downstairs. Basically we sat in a bar, with great but extremely loud music, on a table under a speaker. Steak was good. Ordered dessert which did not arrive so after 30 minutes we had to walk upstairs to find our waiter again to be told they had also run out of it, Back to the music which was great but when I go out for dinner I want to speak to my friends and have the music at the right volume for a great ambience. I did ask for it to be turned down once and it was for 2 minutes and then went even louder. My advice is don't go to this place as London has too many places that serve food in a great environment and this place was terrible.

Hackney Road is a very unlovely thoroughfare but it runs to the edge of uber trendy Shoreditch and is being transformed by the hipsterisation of the area. Mr Buckley's is a welcome addition. The interior is fashionably bare brick, a downside side of that is the acoustics are pretty poor. A large birthday party's happy laughter resonates through the restaurant. But the food's the thing and you can't fault it. A limited menu of locally sourced seasonal ingredients is beautifully cooked and presented. Service is efficient and amiable. A carafe of the house wine is a relative bargain at £12 and accompanied both the chicken breast with basil mousse and pigeon brilliantly. There's also a good range of beers from smaller breweries.Downstairs there's a nicely minimalist bar.Highly recommended and it's best to book a day or two before at weekend.

Went here on a Thursday evening not having any idea what to expect. This used to be the site of a local below average tired Indian take-away, and has now been transformed to an exciting hip loft style eatery, with bare brick walls, wooden floor and atmospheric candle lit lighting. So - the food could be a complete afterthought - as is often the case with many places looking like this. But not here!Had a brilliant risotto parmesan broccoli starter followed by an exciting and original chicken breast dish. I was so delighted with the food and to cap it all, both my girlfriend's dishes ( veg dish followed by pidgeon ) were equally great. We had a fairly decent Rioja carafe as well, anda swede side dish. We had no dessert - though they looked great. All came to about £70 - which is not cheap - but nor is it extortionate. To sum it up:Pleasant surprise and really good food.I'll be back.

We are now planning our next night out with friends, dinner and cocktails to sample more delights and then head down to the lower bar to continue the fun and local atmosphere! A great find!

Went for brunch on Saturday. The decor and atmosphere was good, with reasonable space between the tables. We had to wait quite a while to be seated (5 minutes or so), for no reason that I could tell since we had booked in advance and there were a few tables available. Once seated, the poor service continued. Although the staff were pleasant, they were unfortunately ineffectual. Drinks (not a complicated order) were forgotten for 15-20 minutes and only came after we reminded the staff. The food was mediocre, but poor for the price. The minute steak (reasonably cooked) was accompanied by overcooked poached eggs that had been cooked in cling film and a Bearnaise sauce that contained too much vinegar and parsley. The french toast was fine, if a little undersweetened.Ontaining and settling the bill took longer than it should have done.I would not recommend this place for food. It looks like it shows promise as a an evening or afternoon venue for drinks (and perhaps snacks), but does not cut the mustard as a restaurant.

Having eaten here for brunch a few times,I was looking forward to coming for dinner!I came with friends that I work with and had a really good night. Mr Buckleys was busy, but the service was friendly ,and as usual the food was interesting ,well cooked and presented and gorgeous. We all had a a great time. I have really been enjoying one of the wines(picpoul?) that they recommended(have been buying it since then). We went downstairs for drinks afterwards, and it was a really modern fresh place to be. The service was just as friendly. The manager introduced himself to us and stayed for a bit to chat and make sure all was well. All in all a lovely night in a lovely restaurant .Will go again!

Had Xmas dinner with my friends and after paying almost £600 for about 13 people, mind you not itemised bill, not like we had a lot of alcohol we didn't pay service charge and as we were heading downstairs to carry on spending our hard earned cash the manager threw us out and was announcing to customers that we are refusing to pay the service charge. He asked us to leave and stood over us whilst we finished our drinks. Would you believe he was asking security to escort us out.....let me see what trading standards have to say about this....

I had booked a table at Mr Buckleys last night for myself and a few friends. Having been to Mr Buckleys several times in the past I was expecting to choose from a menu that mainly consisted of a large selection of small plates to mix and match. Although this had always been successful in the past, and was indeed why we had booked again, I was pleasantly surprised to see that they had also introduced larger plate meat and fish dishes. We ordered a selection of 'Jars' and starters to share and they were first rate. I particularly liked the Venison tartare which was rich and perfectly seasoned and also the liver mousse which came with excellent bread. For main I had the Rabbit Wellington which was very well presented and delicious and was accompanied by some of the best roast potatoes I have tasted. I believed they were cooked in dripping and they were particularly noteworthy. We tried a selection of puddings and they were all well judged and and moorish, particularly the chocolate torte and we also tried a peanut butter crumb which was surprisingly good. The music was as good as ever and it was packed. This really was the best meal that I have had in a long while, which is why I have taken the time to write a review!

Visited Mr Buckleys for brunch/lunch with girlfriends on a Saturday and what a great time we had! The service was excellent and the restaurant had a great vibe. Loved the food which had flair and was well cooked and presented. The banana cake with peanut butter and chocolate was to die for! I'm looking forward to returning for dinner soon!

I visited Mr Buckleys yesterday lunchtime, for the third time. We were a small group of girlfriends having a day out. The food was GORGEOUS! I had the rosti on the brunch menu, which I would definitely have again. The chef had made a brown sauce which was just a perfect addition to my meal. The dark chocolate and almond torte after was divine.I could eat all of it again now. We picked a wine that was recommended, which to our surprise we all really liked and would have again. The service was really good and attentive. Its a non pretentious place with style! We all really enjoyed our meal, and spent quite a long time there. I will definitely be going back!

Visited this restaurant with my girlfriend for an evening mean in July 2013.We were seated by a very pleasant, attentive, polite waiter. The menu offered a good range of dishes without being overwhelming. We ordered 3 dishes each and a jar of nibbles and a side plate and were impressed with them all.Their arrival was staggered, which we appreciated - otherwise some of them would've doubtless gone cold while we worked on the rest.We finished off with a couple of cocktails, which were well made.I thought the restaurant was slightly pricey. Although the food was nice, its location means it can't have the overheads of other more centrally-located restaurants serving similar food at similar prices. But all-in-all a good meal in a professional, clean, crisp restaurant, which I hope continues to go from strength to strength.

Had dinner here with a friend. Ordered about 5 dishes which were all good. The gravlax was excellent as was the polenta. If you like something spicey try the jerk steak. I had the salted caramel parfait for dessert which is probably one of the best desserts

Myself and my partner went to Mr Buckleys for brunch on a saturday followed by the Columbia Rd flower markets. We had a potato and courgette rosti with a poached egg and the skillet breakfast. The food was all cooked to perfection with my poached egg being just a little runny inside - delicious! Presentation was great. Atmosphere was bustling. Service was relaxed but prompt. In all in it was the perfect way to start the weekend and a great pitstop before diving into the busy flower markets.

We had a table reserved to celebrate my other half's birthday, the food was impeccable with a down to earth menu with enough unique dishes to set it apart from the rest of the Shoreditch crowd. The staff were friendly and knew the menu inside out, we had the restaurant provide a birthday cake which they brought in after the meal.We then moved downstairs and sat round the bar till late where the music was vibrant and added to our party mood.Overall this an absolutely great night out.Thank you all at Mr Buckleys

We eat here last night & were really impressed. We are quite hard to please vegetarians & almost everything we eat was tasty, well cooked & thoughtfully presented. The menu isn't huge but has sufficient variety. We particularly enjoyed the 'small plate' tasting plates & we had 2 dip starters followed by 6 plates and we were then too full to even try the desserts. The serving staff were attentive, helpful & most knowledgeable about the food they were serving. The waitresses really helped the atmosphere of 'cool but not pretentious'!

What can i say my husband and i had a fabulous evening yet AGAIN at Mr. Buckleys celebrating his birthday, this is the second time we have visited this establishment and i cant speak highly enough of it!!On our first visit, we met up with our very good "foodie" friends who live not too far from the area and we were all so impressed with the food, service, cocktails, it truly is a gem of a place and all at affordable prices, which makes a change!!we started our evening downstairs in the cocktail bar, the cocktails were some of the best we have ever had! the 277 cocktail is truly out of this world!! We then made our way upstairs to the restaurant, the low lighting is very cool and understated the menu is innovative and everything compliments each other, we went into tastebud overload choosing which small plates to order & nothing was a disappointment. I even had a dessert (which is a very rare occurence for me!) which was sensational! We then finished off our night downstairs making our way through the cocktail menu, thank you Mr. Buckleys yet again for a fab evening!!Service always impeccable & great relaxed atmosphere, perfect for a birthday night out with friends or just a perfect intimate dinner date with my hubby! We will definitely be seeing you very soon!!

Had supper here with a friend earlier in the week - what a good surprise! We only went out for a quick drink, but the atmosphere was great & made us have a cocktail or 2, they were even better so we thought we'd stay for the food, lovely staff made some recommendations & out came the plates & they were all AMAZING - we had to double up on the lobster mac n cheese & order another one...Mr Buckley's, we'll be back!

My wife and I ate at Mr Buckly's last night on the recommendation of a friend and we both loved it. I think sharing small plates is the way to go, its much more social and fits in with the friendly vibe of this bar/restaurant. They were playing good tunes and I liked the slightly paired back interior.I would recommend the potted ham hock and the pork belly. The ham hock was perfectly seasoned and the sharpness of the pickles was a nice contrast. The salted parfait was also really good. All in all a great neighbourhood restaurant and bar. Good food, good vibes and really interesting music. The service could have been a bit quicker but thats the only negative and it was busy at the time..

What a great restaurant on Hackney Road! Me and my boyfriend both had a 277, their signature cocktail, it was really good and very well prepared. We then had a few plates, they were all great, especially the asparagus with quail eggs, the blue cheese polenta, the pork belly and the onglet steak. We thought the food was very well done, the kind of food you find in a high-end restaurant. It came at a very reasonable price and the service from the waitress was perfect. This is now one of our favourite restaurants in East London!

The place is nice and features a good rock-steady, ska soundtrack. Service is courteous although sloppy. No smells in the restaurants and prices fair. The menu is confused, more an exercise of a chef trying to be sophisticated in an area that is far from responsive to posh style.Presentation is thought through but results are barely legal, in some cases simply wrong. The food is something to forget. I am still digesting the lamb after a night sleep. Combinations of flavours are a good thing if you understand flavour. In this case there is almost complete lack of such understanding. The food is in the end too damn fat. And fat is not good for flavour, does not add to it, actually it detracts by masking not fresh or tasteless ingredients.

Being a fan of inventive small plate menus, and decent cocktails, Mr. Buckley's was always going to be a winner in my book. We originally booked a table for 7.00pm, but when our friends told us they were running late, the staff were very accomodating and set us up with a table at the bar downstairs.Over the course of the evening, we tried seven or eight plates from the menu, the goat's cheese nightjar and braised ox cheek stood out, but everything went down well, and the level of good service we received on arrival continued thoughout the night.Being set away from the Shoreditch High Street and Curtain Road, means that Mr. B's hasn't been invaded by scene-tourists yet. We'll be back to try the brunch menu soon.

I heard a lot about Mr Buckleys, and living close by decided to give it a try. I had high expectations but left feeling disappointed. The dishes are made to share, we had 6 between 2 of us. Most of the dishes were too salty and the fried fennel tasted of batter and not a lot else. Atmosphere was good, the usual Dalston hipster crowd. Could be so good but the food just wasn't right to make me want to go back.
