Colmans Fish & Chips in South Tyneside

Fresh, tasty and big portions! What more can you want? Absolutely love the traditional feel of the place and my family demand to go here every time the travel up north to visit. The scampi is so great as well if you fancy something different from fish.

Incredible haddock and chips, well worth the wait!

Lovely fresh fish and great service. The tartar sauce is magic sauce. The mushy peas were top drawer. Even got to know which boat the fish was brought in on!

Sorry. Batter was smelly/ greasy . FIsh was good. Chips good. Like our last visit, we left a bit disappointed . PROBABLY will try another fish and chips shop .

Was recommended a stop at Coleman's by a friend who used to live locally. We had just completed walking Hadrian's Wall from west to east, after dipping our boots in the North Sea to complete the walk, we staggered onto Coleman's, where we were met warmly, made comfortable and then served the BEST FISH & CHIPS I have ever, ever tasted! Great staff, very comfortable surroundings, staff lovely. Did I mention that the fish and chips were the best we've ever had?! Unlikely to return to South Shields but if we do, there is only one place to eat! Cannot recommend highly enough.

Yesterday(29/4/24)our fish went from swimming in the sea to swimming in Sunflower oil quite literally,absolutely saturated.There were oil slicks in both boxes.Really disappointing.

After trying Temple we felt we ought to try the original and it didn't disappoint

The fish and chips were adequate and ok but nothing out of the ordinary Price bit higher than other places and cannot see anything special over all the fish n chips local ? Must be a history thing… ?

Only problem is the ceramic tile outside when I was leaving IAM not steady on my legs it was raining so I nearly fell so I' will not be back in a hurry

I was charged £1.95 for tartar sauce in my 75 years I have never been charged for tartar sauce. I think that is a rip off. Also think it should have been mentioned to me when I asked for it. Not happy

I had heard about this restaurant on a TV program and took the opportunity to try it out. The restaurant was very busy but we didn’t have to wait too long for a table. The food was excellent and arrived pretty quickly. The downside was the business like attitude of most of the staff especially the person who took our order. A smile and a friendlier attitude would have made the experience all the more pleasant. The friendliest person there was the person who took my payment.

Takeout, fish was great not to many chips , one portion was enough for both of us.

Fantastic place, food excellent and very quick service

Good Friday, so had to wait for around 30 mins to get in...not a bad wait time at all. Served straight away and our food appeared almost straight away. It was the special, fish, chips, mushy peas and a cuppa for around £16 each...we got a bun each (really wished it was bread cos a bun is weird - for me) but we could eat them...we were both defeated by the whale and the massive portion of chips we received. Haven't been for years and it was my fellas first time, it won't be his last 😁

Great Cod and chips, mushy peas, with soft drink deal. Quality fish and batter. The size of the cod was large. Highly recommend. Lucky locals.

Food was fantastic, freshly fried fish and chips (take away). I found the service was very efficient however not exactly friendly. Still well worth it though 🙂

Myself, family and friends have asked several times over the years if the fish is fried separate to the meat products and always told by a Male member of staff it is and not mixed with meat oil. We have strict dietary requirements and therefore recommended this place to many others who have the same dietary requirements. I recently found out by chance when I called up with a different enquiry that the fish is in fact fried and mixed in with all of the meat products in the same oil/ fryer, this was not a mistake as two members of staff confirmed this on the same call one being a rude, sarcastic lady with a bad attitude which most people probably know who I am talking about. Before Colemans accuse us of misunderstanding not only have I asked on more than one occasion, other people i know have confirmed they were told the same.

Amazing Haddock & chips. Catered brilliantly for my wife's intolerances & served her grilled haddock without batter or coatings. We all agreed it was the best supper & Best value & service. 6stars

Quality of the food was excellent,as always. Service-friendly and fast.

We both had the Cod and Chips special which included Mushy peas and tea or coffee. We were seated straight away and the waiting staff were very attentive and quick to ask for our order, which came out within minutes. The cod was superb and the batter was amazing. The Mushy peas were really nice and the cup of tea was nice and hot. I suppose if there was a minor complaint we didn't think the chips were as good as the last time we had been here. Having said that we enjoyed what we had and would certainly come back again next time we are here.

Great curry sauce, great peas, huge portion of chips, easily enough for 2ppl, canny price point. Fish flaky but batter was a bit soft but understand that's what happens when you get a takeaway box. Would i recommend? Yes, would i go back yes for a sit in meal & compare.

This was our second visit to the seafood temple, it won’t be our last, lovely food , lovely service and staff and a great location, highly recommended.

A visit to Colmans on Ocean Road is always highly anticipated from previous visits. My last visit did not disappoint , and the very high standards in the Haddock & Chips , stottie /butter and tea was as ever was maintained . Delicious food, comfortable surroundings and cheerfu l, friendly , knowledgeable and welcoming staff. Great value and pleasural visit again.

The place us lovely, very quiet when we where in but didn't know it was just before closing time we went in ,but made very welcome by the staff.Great meal.

Good fish and ships - best takeaway in the area.

1st time in all my years visiting South Shields. And this afternoon I decided to buy some of their award winning chips. What a complete waste of £4.50 the chips were absolutely dreadful to look at. And as for the taste their was no taste what soever. Who ever awarded them their award winning award for the best chips. Must have next to no taste buds. Truly disappointed chucked them to the birds after tasting about half a dozen. Just in case they got better but no they were dreadful.

Fantastic fresh fish and lovely chips, wife had a lovely cheese pattie and lovely mushy peas. Will definitely be back as this is my new go to for fish and chips.

Beautiful fish and chips. There was a queue of people outside but we still got in quickly as a table of 8 when we hasn't made a reservation. Friendly staff.

Was in the area and this place was recommended to me, so after checking out the reviews went there for lunch. Got there early, soon after opening to make sure no problem getting a table, as it's popular and was a way for me to go to visit. Upon entering was greeted and taken to a table, very friendly staff. Nicely laid out location with tables not too close together, but close enough so it is quick and easy for them to be changed around for different size groups. I ordered the Colmans Feast (Prime cod, thick-cut chips, homemade mushy peas plus a pot of tea or a cup of filter coffee) with a side portion of curry sauce. Came very quickly and it was lovely and hot, all perfectly cooked. Ate every scrap and thoroughly enjoyed every bit! Cod was a good size and plenty of flesh, chips were a good size and nice and chunky, curry sauce was spicy and thick enough (not too much to kill the taste of the fish/chips) and mushy peas were very enjoyable (I'm not a massive lover of mushy peas). I had the coffee as my drink and it was a decent flavoured cup. Was so good that I went back 3-4 days later with a friend and had the same again apart from skipped on the mushy peas. Lovely atmosphere, lovely food, friendly staff Due to it's popularity can get very busy (as it was my second visit) and so may have to wait for a table it you time it for the busy period. 100% without hesitation recommended!

I used the takeaway at the beach front £7 for two small trays of chips quality was poor if there wasn’t a que I’d of taken them back. Location was fantastic but please listen to your customers you might not have a business if you keep this up.

We visited the North East for the first time in 4 years, and the first thing we did was drive straight to Colmans for Fish & Chips! My family have been looking forward to visiting Colmans ever since our last pre-Covid visit. My late father introduced me to Colmans many years ago, and now no visit to the North East is complete without a visit to Colmans Fish & Chips. Maria and her wonderful team are very friendly, welcoming and attentive, the restaurant is spotlessly clean, and the food is OUTSTANDING. Wild, fresh fish caught locally, cooked to perfection, and absolutely the best chips you could eat. I have travelled worldwide, and tried Fish & Chips in many restaurants in many countries, (including Gordon Ramsays British Restaurant in Macau), but I can say with 100% honesty that Colmans is the best.....by a long way. We made time to visit twice during our one-week visit, they are that good. My family are already looking forward to visiting the North East again, and of course Colmans Fish & Chips will be on the top of our 'to do' list! Thank you Maria and all the team.

I ordered ‘The Colmans feast’ which was lovely! It is the best fish and chips I have ever tasted! Maria suggested the homemade tarta sauce which went very well with the fish! Would recommend anybody visiting Shield’s to stop in here. The service was as good as the standard of the food first class!

The fish itself was great. Most of the batter was also very crispy. But a lot of moving a lot of dough. The fries went quite well.

What a great shop. The food is absolutely great. Fish & chips are highly recommended. The pea puree and the fries are homemade and the cod also tastes excellent. There is also a local beer that is only available here. The ambience is convincing and the service is super fast. Anyone who is in the area should definitely come here.

Best fish and chips we have ever had, so glad we visited. Portion sizes were huge. You can see and taste the freshness of the fish and chips. Crisp batter and fluffy chips. Can't wait to go back.

An excellent fish and chip restaurant. Tge food was great I managed to get lemon sole too. They even had on the board which boat caught the fish and which sector of tge sea it was caught. They had on the board what potato was used for the chips and the homemade tartar sauce was great. Well worth tge visit.

Used to come here as a child and apart from the update in the restaurant its as good as I remember it! So good I visited again a week later!

Such a great atmosphere and lovely staff! My mum and I were visiting from France and Berlin and loved the fish and chips! We have missed that warm welcome and people living away for so long. We will be back next year!

Travelled 45 minutes to try these chips - well worth the trip. Curry sauce was spicy and the fishcakes was properly homemade with good bits of fish in.

Called today for lunch we both had the cod and chips and have to say they were delicious The place was clean and staff were friendly and not to bad price Would definitely recommend and we will definitely be back when over that way

Fantastic. Straightforward menu, cheery prompt service, and excellent food at a good value. Avoid ordering alcohol, you can get more for less at nearby pubs and you shouldn't be going to a fish and chip shop for booze anyway. Recommend ordering curry sauce for chip dipping. For other Americans: mushy peas sounds gross as a name but they're actually quite tasty, at least at this place.

Fish beautiful, chip portion could be better, but food beautiful, only 4 stars for service as only 1 person serving, but definitely go back next time l'm up from Worcestershire.

This is one of the best fish and chip shops anywhere. Food and service are excellent, but I don't go to chip shop restaurants for atmosphere. The atmosphere is a good busy chippy which is as it should be. For the first time I ate their hand produced scampi, it was excellent. Never had a bad meal here. Only downside is it can be very busy and the que can be down the street. No booking of tables, first come first served.

Having heard several good reports, we recently made our first visit to Colman's while in the local area. We were not disappointed! The fish and chips were of the very highest order; the home made tartare sauce was truly excellent; and the 'stottie' cake must...
