Colmans Fish & Chips in South Tyneside

From my original review some 6 years ago things seem to have improved and I'm happy to report good news as to portion sizes although a couple more chips would be nice but great service and friendly with it 😊

The last time we were in South Shields we went to Colman’s Temple so we wanted to compare the two. Well the outcome is a drawer - both are excellent in quality and quantity. The only difference is we had cod this time compared to haddock. The staff were very accommodating and we would definitely return(to both)

Enjoyed a fantastic dinner at Coleman’s Fish and Chips during our visit to South Shields! Service was great…huge portion of Cod…batter was perfect…and we all tried mushy peas for the first time…we loved it! Thanks for a great night!

Food was really nice 13.50 for large fish and chips but I'd class it as a small I got it to shear with my little girl she ate most of it and she's six says it all really

I rated this high on atmosphere because it really took me back to the 80's and my childhood but in all honesty apart from the nostalgia there wasn't anything to really sell the atmosphere on ... Last week I had my first ever Coleman's even though I've been a local my entire life I'd never had one before & it didn't disappoint - it was phenomenal 😍 crispy light batter fish tasted great and the chips were spot on ...I liked the board saying which fish and potatoes were used that day too ...nice touch ... Ordered a light bites box & it was absolutely great 😃 as was the curry sauce - can't wait to go back 🙌🏽

We are regulars at Colman's on Ocean Road, South Shields. It's our go-to place for take away fish and chips. The Lighter Choice Cod and Chips is a perfect portion and good value. We travel from Washington, just about every week, for our fish and chips

Went for mother's day my son and I ordered fish and chips when arrive fish red hot chips cold complained waitress took my plate she was very professional came back with my plate still with cold chips then came back with a 1 bowl of chips 1 manager yawning the other very polite don't think I will be back

Called in the afternoon for takeaway Fish (Cod) and chips and curry sauce. Even before I opened curry sauce, I could tell it was of a very liquid consistency and a yellow colour (rather than light brown) . It tasted weak and unpleasant vaguely wetted a chip rather than coating it. I immediately asked if this was a mistake but both fryers said it wasn’t and “I t’s always been like that!” Well if that’s the standard ‘mixture’ it certainly takes an award for the worst curry sauce in the UK (unless you know different?) The fish had an extremely greasy outer batter that expressed an un complimentary vegetable oil when touched. The inner batter remained wet. Chips were absolutely fine. Fish 3/10 Chips 8.5 /10 Curry sauce 0/10 I immediately asked them at the counter to dispose of the curry sauce for me as it wasn’t fit for consumption and could only spoil my meal. Although I didn’t ask, neither did they didn’t offer to refund me my £1.50 For well over 20 years, I frequented Colmans approximately once a fortnight, I can’t imagine returning after today. It’s too much money for a very sub-par meal.

Me and my friends have been coming to Colmans for years and love it we wouldn’t go anywhere else. We went a few days ago we ordered 2 fish and chips mushy peas and curry sauce it was delicious. It’s honestly the only fish I’ll eat and I love the batter on the fish it’s the best. I honestly can’t eat my fish without some curry sauce to dip my fish if you haven’t tried it then give it a go. Staff were polite and friendly as usual. We will be back again soon :)

We are visiting the area from down south. These are the best fish and chips we have had for a long time. We ate our food on the beach which was also amazing. Definitely recommend this place. Very reasonable cost, we had the meal deal.

Beautiful fish and chips and great friendly service. My adult kids and I love eating here. My son loves the scampi and my daughter loves the fish cakes and curry sauce. Delicious yummy food.

Haddock,chips,mushy peas and a bread bun. Fantastic and worth £20.05 I come here every few months and it’s well worth it and the best.

Sorry to post this but as local 'frequent flyers' to this place, and it's usually spot on with the odd hiccup, this time round my wife and i both feel the Haddock and Chips with mushy peas n curry sauce have been a real let down. Dry fish, tasteless chips and hard mushy peas. Not what we expect Colmans. Better luck next time then?

Best fish and chips in town. Beautiful fresh fish with light batter. Freshly cooked chips that are crispy not soggy. Portions are very generous (can definitely share a portion of chips). The batter on both the scampi and the sausage are light, not heavy and not at all greasy. There is a takeaway attached to the restaurant serving the same classics, same quality and taste. Perfect for a summers day or a cold winters night.

There's no doubt about it, without question, the best fish n chips anywhere north of Whitby, second to none, nowhere else in the north east even come close, take my word, a fat, fifty odd year old Yorkshire man who grew up, religiously eating fish n chips wi bits and peas or curry sauce, every single Friday dinnertime! If you're ever in South Shields or within 10 miles, make a detour and get yourself a bit of good old English food heaven!!

Parts of the restaurant are colder than others, buts it’s absolutely no problem if you want to move and there’s space to do so. Food and service excellent as always; a bit pricey but then what isn’t these days!

What superb fish and chips. This was a lunchtime random visit where we had 2 senior deals and a regular cod & chips with m. peas. All cooked to perfection with light flaky cod in batter that was soooo crispy. Service v friendly and a good atmosphere. Will def visit again if in the area

My first experience at Coleman's went really well. The staff were all great, the place was busy and cosy. The fish are caught daily so you cannot ask for fresher! The downside was the cost. Just a bit too pricey for me. 2 fish and chips with peas and 2 cans of pop - £40.90. Food was good though. Especially the mushy peas.

We were heading to the sea front and picked up some food from the takeaway. My fish was coated in delicious crispy batter, plenty of chips and had some scraps on top, my friend got the sausage and chips and was equally pleased with her choice. Wish I tried the takeaway earlier because it's spot on.

The grilled fish - HIGH PRICES FOR A STINGY PORTION. Wanted to go for the healthy portion being 5 months pregnant. At a whopping £17.95 a portion the haddock was the size of my toddlers foot coupled with 15 chips. Go elsewhere for the price.

While food was good ordered chicken fillet bites which were £4 for 4 or £8 for 8 expected at this price to be a decent size. Tasted good but poor value for money

Lovely fish and chips , complete with mushy peas and a small pot of tea. Tartare sauce was not to my liking but evrrything else was spot on.

Delicious food,, clean restaurant , helpful staff and reasonable price too.

Wifey & I used the take away part of the restaurant on Valentines night. Wifeys cod & chips was excellent as was my scampi & chips. The service was excellent from the young land and the food piping hot. I would give 5 stars however the was an older lady helping prepare orders and we watched her picking up food from the hot cabinet with her bare hands. No gloves. No tongs. Her hands. Very disappointing to see in an otherwise flawless service.

Very nice food and very quick service on a Saturday evening. Accommodated the baby with high chair.

Colmans needs to get a grip of their takeaway service. Today was diabolical. A big sign welcoming you and says 'All our food is cooked to order, so order on entry' And despite there being only 3 customers ahead it still took 15 mins to even get our order in, with a further 10-15 mins for it to be cooked and served. This was because there was just 1 server on the counter, who was responsible for taking the walk-in orders and making them up, in addition to receiving, ordering and making up the click and collect orders too, who consisted a steady flow of other customers calling in to collect their food. Thus, the seemingly short queue at the start was nothing more than a mirage. Personally speaking, they should have one person dealing with the traditional walk-in queue and another dedicated to click and collect, as it all made for a very frustrating experience. One, I will be thinking twice before making again if it doesn't change soon.

SIMPLY THE BEST 🎵🎶🎵 BETTER THAN ALL THE REST! honestly the best best best fish and chips ever and I've lived in Scotland where chippies are amazing and near the seaside in Yorkshire and still, these in South Shields town are by far the absolute best, the fish is so so tasty and beautifully white, so perfectly cooked and I actually don't much care for chips, but their chips are unbelievable and so so gorgeous 🥰

This is a great family chip shop. I had sausage chips peas and gravy all top notch with great service the rest of my party had fish which was delicious the bit I tried. Definitely revising when we are back up north.

Been going here since I was a toddler and now 65 years old and always found the service and quality top of the pops compared to the likes of Whitby and elsewhere.over the last 3 visits we have noticed the quality dropping off from the usual standards primarily the size and thickness of the fish where we get the large ones.the quality of the chips is falling in that they were always notable more chunky than their other branch and there are more scrappy bits now and less chips full stop.the number of chips was compared to a table who got the pensioner special and I swear they got just the same amount and their fish was just marginally smaller?.I understand things are getting tighter and may well get worse in the new year when nat insurance rises and the min wage goes up but for some one who has been coming for years it's more noticeable than a less regular visitor.the other thing is the fish is drier and I do wonder if the use of local boat fish has stopped or been reduced?.perhaps other regulars have noticed changes?

2 things let this place down... A) it came to £40 for 2 fish & chips with mushy peas & pots of tea. B) My partner doesn't like tea or coffee and asked to change it for a can of pop and the woman said no! Even though they are the same price. Absolutely ridiculous. Fish & Chips was alright but nothing special and certainly not worth £40! Mushy peas were the best I've ever had, though, but that was it. Not as great a place as it's made out.

Fantastic fish and chips best ever. Only critism is the central heating needs fixing sometimes it's cold which spoils the whole experience.

Best fish and chips my wife and I have ever had

Rang on four occasions this afternoon to confirm opening times as we were travelling a distance. On each occasion greeted by fax tone so unable to speak to anyone. Checked times on website which still states Monday to Saturday 1100am - 545pm. Arrived at 4pm to find you are shut. Very very poor information and concern for your customers.

13.50 for chips and chicken nuggets and a couple of bottles if juice! Nice chips but the staff were abrupt and the queue was out the door waiting. You cannot see the food prep area either which is always suspect. Will not being going again. Not recommended.

Best fish supper in the UK. Cooked to perfection, not a bit of grease in sight. Been coming here for years even though it’s 35 miles from home. Photos on wall of customers; Patrick Stewart, Jo Brand, David Walliams and even David Milliband and Tony Blair all out for a great cheap feed.

Busy, as expected for Saturday teatime but all in all very good. A little noisy but quick service, clean, modern tables, best of all, fabulous Colmans Feast. Fish & chips at their best.

First time visitors from Cambridgeshire

Called in here on our way up the coast. Heard they had award winning fish and chips. Lovely clean restaurant with lots of celebrity photos on the wall of past customers. Fish and chips were very good and didn’t disappoint.

Our banb host warmly recommended Colman's and we both had a splendid meal. Each component was of excellent quality and, it is worth emphasizing in these days of ever smaller portions,ample in quantity. I had my haddock poached rather than battered which is a very attractive option to me. That said, my wife's battered fish was superb. I must also mention the amazing tartare sauce, very obviously 'home' made. In my opinion, the price was extremely reasonable given the very high quality. We also valued very highly the comprehensive efforts to run the business sustainably. The staff were very pleasant and obliging. As chance had it, we were able to speak to the gentleman who had cooked our meal who clearly took great pride in his work. Don't hesitate. Charles Allison

Amazing food as always, one of our favourite places to eat, the only place to go for fish and chips! The staff are always friendly and welcoming.

The food and service was excellent. However I was confused that they shut at 6pm as I would have liked to order the affogato for dessert. Google maps says they close at 7pm, which is probably why more people tried to enter but were turned away.

It was good but I was just visiting.

Other than hair in my food, the fish was good. I was taken aback though when I was told that the hair wasn’t in or cooked in the food. (See picture) So instead of giving me options the manager gave me another meal. Also, we ordered bread and butter - never got it. Ordered original coke - got diet. And the waiter was rude!

A gift for my 70th birthday and I can honestly say I had the superb food an best fish n chips ever ...and looking at the other dishes the others were having all had same to say. Superb food and staff .

Was at South Shields to visit the beach on a lovely sunny day and decided I was hungry so asked a few locals where to eat and they all recommended to go to ocean road so I headed down there to look for a nice place to grab a bite. Saw Coleman’s fish and chip shop and thought to myself nothing beats a fish and chips on a summers day so popped in got for takeout and was immediately met with a very hostile response from the server. The lady was very aggressive and impatient though with another customer was very friendly who happened to be white British. Anyhow she got the fish and chips cooked and said how much salt I said just a small amount and to my dismay she poured pretty much half the container onto my fish and chips and smacked the box close in front of my face. Went in the car to eat the so called famous fish and chips and couldn’t believe how dry the fish was and how stale the chips were tasting as if they were reheated. Very racist server and terrible fish and chips go elsewhere all the reviews don’t tell the true story of this place as if they beg for good reviews?

Whilst visiting South Shields, we thought we'd try fish & chips from Colmans as it was directly opposite our digs but also had pretty good reviews. We walked in to be greeted by a young man who I can only describe as looking like he was about to chuck himself off a cliff. He directed us to a table for 2 which was a little too close for comfort for my liking to the nice couple 6 inches away. The young man obviously reluctantly then found us a nice table next to the toilets. I found the fish & chips ok, a little greasy maybe but I can eat skin on the fish, my husband can't, so his experience wasn't as nice as mine food wise. The chips were lovely and the mushy peas very nice. The curry sauce lumpy and floury tasting. The stotty was quite doughy. Whilst eating a waitress passed me with a baby high chair and cracked one of the legs into mine. She could see that it hurt but her response was extremely disappointing. I got a watered down 'oops sorry' and that was it! The atmosphere in general throughout the waiting staff seemed very odd and strained. I won't be going there again as I value my limbs.

Fine fish and chips. Local legend. Music can be too loud. Sometimes the staff seem too rushed and sometimes not.

The best in the area for us visitors! On a par with Whitby’s best!
