Coffee#1 Southsea in Portsmouth

I ordered a cheese and tomato toastie and was brought a cheese and ham toastie by what appeared to be the supervisor. I politely pointed out that mistake and he rudely announced it was what I ordered. I pointed out that I don't eat meat and haven't for many years so I was hardly likely to have ordered ham. He stubbornly asserted it was what I ordered, by now other tables were aware of our conversation. I again pointed out, I don't eat meat, maybe your server made a mistake at which point he stormed over to the counter and brought back my printed order! Underlining with his finger the word ham and thrusting it in my face. I said well I can't eat it, to which he was went and got me a cheese and tomato toastie, which he slammed down on my table without an apology. By now everyone around was staring at me. Honestly if Coffee 1 head office is reading this I think your staff require some extra training! And this was the chap in charge!!

Love it in here. Always have a caramel macchiato with soya milk and it is the best one I have tried. Staff are always friendly and quick to make the drinks. Seating area is comfy and modern. Food is a little hit and miss however, the lemon cheesecake is exceptional! Have yet to finish one!

Excellent service, excellent food and absolutely delightful staff. Would come every day if I could. Highly recommended.

Seemed to be in A long slow queue to order, with various staff members about, but only one making drinks and one serving. Coffee was ok but to be fair, the service across the road in Costa is slightly better. Also had to clean my own table and put the dirty cups from the previous customers onto the floor.

Nice coffee etc, but can be a very slow service, which is now exasperated by trying to accommodate Diliveroo etc. Definitely annoying to be behind online customers !!

As always great tea and coffee, but the place is filthy and needs a good clean!! Table chairs and floors are not clean and put you off coming again

Called in here whilst in Southsea and found the coffee and service good along with a pannini filled a gap, very laid back and relaxed.

I enjoy going to coffee #1 in Southsea 3or 4 times a week. On this occasion I went for breakfast. They are setup well for handling the current difficulties (Covid-19). I get good deals using their App - 50% off food & occasional free coffee vouchers. The atmosphere is very relaxed, the coffee & food are of good quality.

Great coffee (esp their flat white), a nice ambience (always busy and buzzing), excellent staff (and it’s been that way for the few years I’ve regularly visited), and a good location in the heart of Southsea (Palmerston Road). Only slight criticism is that it isn’t dog friendly, so my rescues Nelson & Emma don’t rate it at all ....something to reconsider maybe?

In Southsea and fancied a pit stop so chose Coffee#1. Nice roomy coffee place with plenty of distanced tables inside and a few outside. Chain is owned by Cafe Nero so no doubting the great tasting drinks. Plenty of options in coffee, tea and hot choc. Also had a tuna melt panini which was served hot not warm like some do. Service was quick and staff nice and friendly. Will return but also lots of other places I need to try in Southsea too.

I started frequenting this coffee shop and I cannot say I'm disappointed. The coffee is excellent and well presented. The staff are polite friendly and professional. The environment is perfect and just being able to chill out with a coffee and a book to pass some time is a pleasurable experience, like home from home but better coffee! I highly recommend a visit.

Very friendly and approachable staff. We come in on a Monday morning after activities in the library with our children. Always a pleasant atmosphere and friendly vibe. Coffee is always on point. The staff have also started saving me the little jam jars you use for breakfast, so 10/10 for recycling for the community.

Coffee 1 is in a good central location in Southsea and has a nice interior. However, it is let down by poor service which is not very friendly. Not sure if staff are overworked as often the tables are not cleared and you have to move the cups etc yourself. Which is a shame as the coffee is nice.

Good food and drinks ( actually Excellent Coffee! ). But what makes it for me is the friendly staff! They cannot do enough for you! It's not waiter service but you will see them carrying trays for those who need assistance, bringing food over once It's prepared.Great place to meet up with friends!

A doggie owning customer has posted a review that 1 is not dog friendly. I wish that were true! I’ve seen dogs on seats and once on a table for a selfie . I’ve seen customers blocked by sprawling dogs blocking the aisle. I’ve seen dogs sniffing the low placed crisp packets on display. I’ve seen dogs on an extended lead inside the shop. I’ve heard dogs barking at each other (territory?). I’ve heard dogs barking LOUDLY for a nibble as the owner clearly feeds their pet off the dinner table at home. To summarise I wish the first statement was true as too many dog keepers are immune for the need to train and the fact that not everyone wants to be intimate with their ‘chum’.

Poor service and not dog friendly as advertised- as soon as our dog made any noise (a couple of yips but soon calmed down) my Dad was chucked out. Wouldn't come back

I always enjoy my visits to this cafe. The staff are always friendly and give service with a smile. The coffee and food are good and the decor pleasant.

best coffee I have had in years at such a reasonable price. There is plenty of character here that you dont get in other places, only thing is there isn't a lot of plug sockets.

I can't say how pleased I was to find a Coffee#1 in Southsea! I have many happy memories of Coffee#1 Portswood so I knew I was in for a treat.The staff were lovely. The cakes are am-az-ing. We had an Americano (house blend) which is a nicely balanced blend and their Autumn Hot Chocolate, with crumbed Biscoff. The barista who created the hot chocolate was very proud of her work and keen that my friend should enjoy her drink. She did!

This has been our local go to place for coffee now for a few years - the coffee is consistently good and the vibe is nice too.

We come here for coffee regularly and they always remember our order. Absolutely lovely service, friendly staff. We always have soya mochas to go and a lovely lady called Timea always makes us feel so welcome, and she also makes the best coffee we've had in the area. Always a plus if she makes them for us.

Rubbish coffee. Can we please have organic coffee and organic milk. Service is rubbish and unfriendly. Cups were dirty. Toilets could be fresher.

The staff here are always lovely. No matter who serves me, they always have time to chat back. The lady who served my friend and I was really sweet!

Ive been to this coffee shop a few times with my family we are always made to feel welcome by the girls even though my children take ages to make up their minds on what they want, the girls at the counter are patient and help my kids to decide, we never feel rushed. The coffee is delicious, kids recommend the hot chocolate and the cakes are amazing one of the best coffee shops ive been too, I cannot fault the service in there. I Dont usually review places, but was given a slip by a lovely barista (with red hair) and as I have such a pleasant times there l decided to give a review 5 stars girls

Great place for a catch up with friends and you can bring the dog along too. The Coffee is great, good selection of food which is yummy, the staff are very welcoming and helpful nothing is too much trouble and the prices are very reasonable, what more could you need, we will definitely be regular visitors to Coffee#1

Great coffee, very friendly service (thanks, ladies!), comfortable chairs, relaxed atmosphere...a nice place to chill in Southsea. Can get busy at the counter, but still the best coffee shop in town..

Other than the tall male staff member walking around with head phones in and looking miserable the other staff are all friendly and courteous, always welcoming, the coffee is great and i enjoy going to coffee#1.

I love going to Coffee No.1, what not to like ? Good coffee, friendly staff, the place looks nice with cosy atmosphere.

We’ve visited many coffee#1 locations and to be fair they are consistent in their scruffiness. Tables not cleaned, sticky floors, sticky tables, etc. Its not unique as many chains are similar in this respect, but in the olden days coffee#1 was a cut above in this regard so a shame to seen them go down hill.The staff in the southsea branch were mostly indifferent to serving customers or clearing tables. Bordering on ignorant. With one exception - a polite, friendly girl who’d only worked there 5 days. Hopefully the others won’t bring her down.While it was sunny out we sat inside. It was a shame we had to endure the stench of cigarette smoke from one of the members off staff smoking out the back through the fire escape.Many items on the ‘fresh juice’ and smoothie part of the extensive menu simply weren’t available. I’m not sure if that’s due to a machine malfunction, a lack of fruit or whether the staff just couldn’t be bothered.All in, a wasted visit. The coffee was fine but not good enough to warrant a return trip.

Our three drinks were nicely made by an agreeable barista, my granddaughter knew all about babycinno, my daughter hot white chocolat with cream and marshmallows and happily for an ok espresso. We chose to sit outside and I cleared the table of a dirty ashtray and cup, placing the tray inside the s’offre shop. A little later an employee marched up to our table, one of three and the furthest from the door, and banged the still full ashtray down on our table. Nice.

We visited here for the first time. The service was good. Great selection of coffees and cakes. Only downside not quick on clearing tables.

Having worked in customer myself, I can see how well coffee 1 in Southsea is run. Having never visited a coffee 1 store before I needed a little help and advise on what coffee and cake to purchase. There was a lovely lady on the till (wearing a black shirt, not sure on her name) who was very kind and helpful in advising me what she and her customers enjoy most. I very much enjoyed my super dark chocolate triangle with a soya latte. I will be visiting again very soon and it’s all because of how I was treated and the amazing food.

This is our local cafe. We come here the most. While there are not a lot of vegan food options, they have loads of coffee options. Their newest range included a chai latte which I had never had before. I chose coconut milk and it was delicious! They also allow dogs which is great for us! Our little pooch loves it there! I have also come alone to do work and their WiFi is great as well as having a lovely atmosphere.

I love the coffee here and it’s great that I can have a dairy free alternative. As a coeliac I have to eat gluten free and there really wasn’t much choice for me - more cake ( wrapped or kept separate would be appreciated) 😀

Shame about the service being so slow but the quality of the ciffee makes up for it with me and most of the customers

The coffee was okay as usual, but your staff left the window wide open in the rear toilet. As I was using the facility, I looked up and saw two windows above from the nearby flats. The window was so wide open and out of reach that a customer from the inside can't possibly close it for privacy. How can they be sure that there are no perverts around? This is negligence!

Always nice to pop in here to get a coffee. Lots of seating indoors- some sofas. A few tables outside, but it was far too cold this visit. A selection of cakes- not too sure if there was much to offer in the way of gluten free offerings. They did have a dairy free alternative to milk and it was lovely in my cappuccino X

Definitely my favourite coffee shop in Portsmouth, lovely coffee, amazing cakes! Friendly staff and nice environment. My only grumble is they need to streamline the service. Spend about 20 minutes waiting in a queue of 3 and have to wait at the counter getting in everyones way. A number on wooden spoon/table service would bring this place to 5 stars.

Had a very tasty panini here and the coffee is excellent. Only downside is that you leave smelling of grilled paninis.

This coffee shop is in central Southsea near Debenhams and John Lewis and serves unusual coffees and has a great range of food too. Good atmosphere. Very popular.

Large inside with lots of seating but quite narrow for Pram’s and wheel chairs. Really friendly service from 2 lovely ladies. Coffee was very good quality and cake tasty too. The falafel wrap was a little odd tasting with the cranberry.

We can't go to Palmerston Road without stopping at this warm and comfortable coffee shop for a drink and one (or more) of their tempting treats. The seasonal coffee is amazing! The staff clearly have to work very hard but always go out of their way to help.

As a family, we love Coffee #1 and have been coming here since our daughter was tiny. Jason, the manager, has been a constant positive in our experience and children are always made welcome. The coffee is great as are the giant cookies! Ultimately Coffee #1 in Southsea is our first choice because of the warm welcome, laughs, top colouring and children's books. Thank you to Jason and his team for ensuring that our money is spent in their coffee shop and not one of the many others in the area!

A warm welcome with wonderful staff who are always up for some banter. Along with the home coffee, they often have a seasonal blend. Plus they have a variety of smoothies. Snacks range from bacon baps to Welsh cakes.

My favourite place to meet up with my daughter when I pop down to see her in Southsea. Warm and welcoming atmosphere and the staff are brilliant. The manager always greets us with cheery banter and nothing is too much trouble. Coffee 1 has the best selection of delicious cakes too! No.1 on my list any day and I wouldn't go anywhere else!

The highlight of my week, Saturday morning with my wife in coffee 1, Southsea. The manager is fantastic, funny, and very hospital. All the staff are welcoming and the atmosphere is perfect. Best coffee and cake btw!

Warm and welcoming with fantastic staff, the manager always goes out of his way to help, with friendly conversation and first class service. We visit a few times a week and can’t recommend this coffee shop enough. It is by far the best coffee in southsea, and the staff help make it a wonderful homely atmosphere.

Always a pleasure to come in here for a warming latte and a few minutes of chill time. Coffee #1 tend to have in my opinion the nicest shops to spend some time in, cosy and pleasant and with a little local personality to boot. Reasonable prices and a decent range of snacks and treats to go with the coffee.

Coffee#1 has been open in Southsea for over four years now, so is no longer a new kid on the block. Right from the beginning, the ambience was right, plus the coffee and food selection, including the signature Welsh cakes, all very acceptable. The problem was the speed of service. Having visited today, we can confirm that this still has a way to go. However, this is offset by the friendly staff working there at the present time, so that at least the delay is less frustrating. If only the flow arrangements could be improved, then we are not far from an excellent mark.

Great coffee diligently made and worth waiting for; usually a queue as sometimes light on staff. Very welcoming and friendly especially Timi who is warm to everyone and probably underpaid and underrated by Coffee#1 in accordance with many businesses these days. Comfortable and varied seating with a feeling of space plus no loud ambient musak to spoil the calm surroundings. WiFi very frustrating as re-login must be done every 10 minutes or so. But I still go there most days.

they don't open on time, aren't always happy, but Coffee#1 has become my favourite breakfast spot. great value, airy, good wifi and once the opening palaver has sorted itself out, it is a fine spot. one worry...get a team together and stick with it! pay a few more quid if thats the problem?!

Recently visited with my 2 children and partner. Great Choice of drinks, cakes, sandwiches etc.It is not always easy with my son finding places for refreshments as he is so fussy. He thoroughly enjoyed the choices he had and we will certainly be returning very soon.Thank you

I often visit coffee one when I’m in Southsea, usually with friends. The staff are always pleasant. I believe it to be the best coffee shop in Southsea. Sometimes at busy periods there might be a small queue but the staff often apologise for any delay and the coffee is worth waiting for! The food also is varied and very pleasant. I have commented previously to the management that they really need more than one coffee machine which appears to me to be the cause of the delays.

We pop into Coffee#1 for a cup of coffee and a sweet nibble regularly. The service is always friendly and the coffee is great. Can get a bit busy as it is so popular. Do try the special coffees. We haven't been disappointed yet.

Coffee No 1: The only coffee shop where you can be the only customer and still have to queue for service.

We came late one afternoon for a cup of coffe and a cake.There was two people in the bar serving, both of them very friendly and nice and helped us out pretty quickly, two coffees and two cheesecakes and we went off to try and find a table.Not a problem one should think when the pace was not even half full.But there was so many dirty tables waitng for them to be cleaned from prevoius customers , trays on most tables.Sad when the staff is busy talking and forget the rest.Leaving us woth a bad impression.That does not make me come back.

I was down southsea and before I left I had to nip in here and get some of there cakes as I had them months ago and was craving . I had a chocolate crunch and a millionaire shortcake . Recommend to anyone there delicious. I’ll be back soon for sure for coffee and cake .

My wife and I, visit Coffee#1 in Southsea, every day, as our guilty pleasure. Great coffee, friendly staff, all in a nice atmosphere.If you want fast food, it's not the place for you. But if you want a nice relaxing time, this is the place.One the downside, teacakes have been off the menu for over a week now. Far too long!! Come on Coffee#1 supply team. Get your act together, as I'm suffering from, T.W.S!! Tea cake, withdrawal, syndrome!!!

Sunday Farmers Market Day is expected to be busy but 20minutes to wait for coffee is too long. At all my visits I've had to wait. Not enough staff! There were at least four tables that needed clearing. The staff were friendly though. Jean Riley.

We went in here hoping for a nice coffee and perhaps cake. There was no queue, however the three members of staff didn’t greet us, and in fact ignored our greeting. We stood for a while watching them faffing with something behind the counter, they continued to ignore us so we went elsewhere. Bad, or in fact no customer service. I see no point paying to be treated rudely. If they had even said, be with you in a minute”, or in any way acknowledged our existence, we would have felt more inclined to stay.

People often go on about good food, coffee etc. But this sometimes ignores the quality of the staff that make the coffee, prepare the food. At this branch of Coffee#1 it's these people who make a visit enjoyable. Yes, their coffee is excellent, especially their seasonal ones and the food is perfect. But all of that has to be delivered. That's why I'm a regular.

Tried to get a coffee in here but the wait was too long. The staff seemed to be in a bit of a pickle so I gave up! Will give then anther chance though as looks nice inside and may have been a one off.

We had a wander around the food stalls in Palmerstone Rd today and came in coffee #1 out of the cold biting wind.So good to see coconut milk on the menu ( I am dairy intolerant ) - I chose the mocha and it was so creamy and delicious. I signed into the free Wi Fi and found a pastry crossword on the coffee # 1 website - we tried and we failed miserably ! Great fun though :-)

The last time I visited Coffee #1 was just after it opened. Nice atmosphere but very slow service. Three years later I thought I'd try again and returned. Only 4 people in front of me in the queue but it took 16 minutes to be served. The slow service a result of preparing food and not leaving enough staff to continue serving drinks. Why was one staff member walking around with a clip board as the queue got longer? Coffee #1 advertises itself as the number 1 coffee chain. How can that be? There's a good and relaxed atmosphere but I definitely won't be returning again. No coffee is worth a 16 minute wait.

...not literally! Seriously, this is by far the best place to have a coffee or a tea or juice. There's a huge selection and always a guest coffee on tap. Staff are always polite and helpful. Don't forget to ask for toasted teacake and pot of jam. Mmmmm delicious!

This is a regular stopping point for me when I'm in Southsea. The food is always tasty and the coffee is delicious. Staff are friendly and welcoming. I would always recommend the Bosco Cheesecake.

I popped in for a quick bite to eat - it had to be gluten and dairy free. Staff were really helpful and I had a lovely sweetcorn chowder. No gluten free bread available - but it was still delicious!

Found this lovely coffee shop during a weekend stay in Portsmouth. Our coffee was super, and the soup we had to sustain us was fine. There was a really lovely ambiance in the place, cheerful staff, happy customers, stuff to keep little ones occupied. We liked it so much we went back this morning for breakfast. My porridge with banana, honey and cinnamon was delicious and set me up for a day of hard core shopping and attraction visiting!

I think their serving staff need to be reminded that they are on the front line of the hospitality industry and are in critical customer facing positions. No 'hello', no eye contact, no energy and long wait whilst something else trivial was done before acknowledging me as a customer. Monosyllabic - no engagement or rapport. Transaction finally done in less than 10 words. Should have walked out but decided to see just how long it took to be served and what the overall experience would end up like. Avoid. Some of their staff need to work in a different job - dealing with machines and not people.

Delicious hot chocolates served here by fairly friendly staff. Lovely clean tables, plenty of seating styles to choose from including comfy are chairs and sofas. Large indoor seating area all nicely decorated. The kids in our group liked the hot air balloon pics on the walls. Limited outside seating (out the front) with no smoking signs on each table. Fabulous looking cakes on offer

More like Coffee#4, since there are three better independent places within walking distance - and there's no WiFi... 😐

Excellent tasting coffeee, a great selection of tasty treats, cakes, savories, even a fresh gluten free cake which is very nice indeed. a good service too.

Usually go to Home foe single varity coffee, but thought we would give coffe a go. We had a couple of wraps as well. Good service. The coffee was better than the wraps. Will return for the coffee.

Great choice of food and delicious coffee. Service has been quicker the last few times we have visited, which is why we returned again. Usually we are put off by the queues and lengthy wait to be served, however, can't fault it at all this time as food, service and environment were perfect !

I love stopping for a coffee here. The atmosphere is great. The coffee is normally very good and it doesn't feel cramped like other coffee places. Yesterday we tried a ciabatta and a flatbread. They were average at best and I was a little disappointed. The flatbread was just plonked in a plate with absolutely no garnish. The ciabatta had some lettuce but it looked like it had been chucked at the plate from the other side of the room. Both were also average to eat. Shame. I will think twice about eating here again. If you want a sweet treat to accompany your cuppa though, they are always delish.

Uncleared tables. Shouting staff trying to identify who ordered food, - why don't they have upright numbers so they can see table numbers. Complete waste of space having buggy area when all tables are too close together. Service very slow.

Lovely coffee shop to visit any time of day. I visit regularly and always enjoy the freshly made coffee. Staff are helpful and friendly. Nice selection of cakes and savouries to.

Larger than it appears from outside the choice of drinks was superb. I don't drink coffee and was delighted with the wide range of hot and cold alternative choices.We spent over an hour relaxing in a lovely spacious area - the tables were not crammed in like some chains do. The coffees were apparently very good and my El Nino smoothie (raspberry mang and banana) was scrumtious. Didn't try the food but the pastries at the counter looked lovely.

Visited on a weekday lunchtime, service was good with happy, friendly chat. Had a lovely cookies and cream hot chocolate and one of the best spiced lattes I have had in a long time. Cheesecake was lovely too!

I have visited this Cafe a few times now. Although the decor is lovely and coffee tastes good. The service is very poor. The other day both credit card machines were not working and staff didn't seem to care. Three times I have visited and asked for a Tuna Panini and have been told at 1 pm they have run out!! How can a cafe run out before 1 pm? i have complained once and was told staff would be retrained- but it doesn't seem to have worked.

Great place to pop in for a coffee and cake with friends or family. Good selection of cakes, smoothies, coffee. There are also some lunch options available. The cafe is quite spacious and offers a children' books to keep kids busy.

Visited today with a friend and was very impressed. We were served very quickly and sat at the back in cosy chairs enjoying our cappuccino, pot of tea and croissant. Best cappuccino I have ever had and a very reasonable price.Will be visiting again very soon.

I use this place regularly as it is more appealing to me than the big coffee shop chains. The decor is certainly different to most other places. I like the food and there are also healthier options in the way of juices and smoothies. What is the downside? They could do with more servers and that would speed service up a bit.

They do great coffee and the cakes are the best but the line can get so long it will put you off. There are lots of seats but it can take a while. Go early or later in the day.

We decided to have a coffee before an appointment, we saw this coffee shop and decided to try it. We stood at the counter waiting for someone to take our Order, one waitress was literally stood in front of up making a drink, she gave us no verbal acknowledgment, two other waiters were too busy discussing the rota for the following week, at one point one of them shouted out and customers coffee Order at the top of his voice, I am sure the customer had fallen asleep at the back of the shop having had to wait so long, we continued to wait for the best part of ten minutes still no acknowledgment from the waitress less than two feet from us, all she had to say was sorry to keep you waiting I will be with you shortly, we eventually left left and went to Costa. I can only think that rude customer services is part of their training.

Always excellent coffee, a nice bite and a choice, however a wider range of gluten and dairy free wouldn't go a miss! Sometimes it can be quite a wait, waitress service might help and would be rather nice. Apart from this, we love it. Staff are always excellent.

Popped in when we were visiting the area. It was quite busy and there were lots of staff in too. I must say that it's the best cappuccino I have had for ages and I would certainly go in to this chain than the others. Only downside was with all the staff in they should have cleared some of the tables more quickly.

Good coffee shame about the service = I think they should have sorted it out by now but haven't. The queues are awful puts me off going in
