Coffee#1 in Mendip

Coffee was tasty. Although felt pretty ignored by what I assume was the manager and maybe a shift leader. I felt uncomfortable and like a third wheel. Could cut the sexual tension with a knife! Such a shame as I enjoyed my flat white, but won’t be returning.

Never have i ever had a breakfast wrap that was so bad. Absolutely freezing. Undercooked and rubbery. Staff obviously don't want to be here. No atmosphere and smells bad. Used to love it in here but not been in a while... safe to say never will I again avoid! I don't even want to go in the toilet to see what state that's in ...off to find a public toilet

Toilet was closed…advised by staff member for a grout clean! This should have took place out of opening hours! We had just ordered our coffee and my daughter and I wanted to use the toilet, we had a 3 year old and a baby. If there was a notice in the cafe window informing customers of this inconvenience we would have gone somewhere else, I think this is bad management, coffee one did not consider their customers experience! If we had not paid for lunch and coffee we would have gone somewhere else. Very disappointed with our experience and will not return.

I always used to visit this branch. The previous manager and her staff were wonderful, really cheery, great atmosphere and best coffee in the area. The new management is terrible. The staff and management clearly don't want to be there and are vocal enough that customers can hear it, the atmosphere is abysmal, coffee standards are on the floor, waiting times are a joke and the place is filthy! Please bring back old management as it's a shame how much this wonderful shop has gone downhill!

Unfortunately after waiting for 15 minutes for my tea, I counted my losses and left. The queue for coffee was long, I suggested that serving the tea - pouring hot water over teabag - shouldn’t be that time consuming. The supervisor (?) who was sat sipping her drink advised the serving girl - ‘she’ll just have to wait’

This coffee Shop is charming and quirky, but the wait time for my drink was slow, also the sweets are great and old school.

Have used this Coffee #1 before, when visited the City last Christmas. Coffee #1 is always a favourite of ours and we try to locate one, wherever we go - exceptional Coffee and Cakes. It was very busy and loud. We were very disappointed with the Coffee - not the usual standard, which leads me to believe it was the Barista at fault, rather then the actual Coffee - weak, watery and a bit bitter. Lemon drizzle cake was delicious.

We went in late afternoon on a Sunday, so it was not busy. However although we were the only customers being served, and there were three girls serving at the counter, it took them 10-15 minutes to make one cappuccino. We had to go up to the counter to enquire about progress after 10 mins. The reason for the delay? Two of the girls were making coffee to take away for themselves, since they were finishing their shift! They were too engrossed with chatting to each other to focus on customers. They obviously could not be bothered to clear and wipe down the tables either, even though they were not busy: one of the chairs had milk spilt on it. And most empty tables needed clearing. Never again: there are many other more pleasant alternative coffee places in Wells. I notice that they do not respond to reviews on tripadvisor, so obviously they could not care less.

We were visiting Wells for the day and popped into Coffee#1 for a coffee and pastry. Unfortunately we were too late for pastries (11.15 am) they’d all gone and ordered toasted tea cakes. These were as flat as a pancake as they were compressed and flattened on the panini grill so they came out like biscuits. Just 2 pats of butter per tea cake which are only enough for one half as the tea cakes are large in the first place. Alternatively they could sold us our first choice of two cinnamon rolls that were on the back counter ready to go out on display but for some inexplicable reason they wouldn’t sell them to us although they put them out 5 minutes after we sat down!! There were several empty tables all with trays of dirty dishes but none were cleared away in the time we were there. The carpet inside the doors obviously hadn’t been vacuumed that day and the toilet was dirty. It didn’t seem to come up to the standards you’d expect from Coffee#1 and was very disappointing,

Stopped for coffee which was ok but needed to use the toilet. It was disgusting. Toilet and bin were filthy as was the floor. Loose toilet roll balanced on dispenser, hand dryer not working and no paper towels etc etc etc. If our drinks had not already been ordered and paid for I would not have stayed. Commented to a member of staff who told us he didn’t normally work there so didn’t know what the normal standard was. For a food outlet it was pretty disgusting.

Need to sort out their dishwasher.. Cups, spoons and glasses are always dirty. Coffee is totally hit and miss - sometimes great sometimes terrible - no consistency at all. Some staff don’t look like they want to be there at all.

We only wanted 2 coffees. The place was busy but the staff weren’t able to deal with the volume which left tables free piled with dirty crockery and, as a result, no clean crockery at the counter which meant takeaway cups and food in paper bags. We had to wait over 10 minutes for the coffee to be made only to sit at a dirty table that we had to clear. Not impressed!

We have been regular patrons for years but of late have noticed a marked decline in cleaning standards. The toilet is grubby and quite often has no soap or paper. Today someone had shifted a large settee forward and the exposed dirt and debris was shocking. On many occasions we have had to clear tables ourselves as the staff seem too busy behind the counter. The crockery is well past its best and is often stained inside. Come on, people, sort it out!

We visited the coffee house on a busy Saturday over the bank holiday, therefore it was busy and very popular. Order at the counter for drinks and cakes and wait for it to be prepared. Hot snacks are brought to the table probably. The staff were very busy but retained a pleasant demeanour during service and were efficient in their duties. The coffees were good and value for money, our Welsh cakes were a bit dry and could have done with some butter. Unfortunately it was let down by the fact that tables were not being cleared fast enough and visitors were having to move other visitors debris before sitting down. There was a try rack which I found later by chance and this should be in a more visible position and accessible to encourage customers to clear their tables. The girls were working very hard, therefore more planning by manager/owner is required. The cleanliness of the cafe was very poor and would put me off going again, in spite of the good drinks. The entrance mat was covered in hair dust and lots of other items of debris and clearly not vacuumed or brush in ages. A family sitting nearby had moved a large settee closet to the table and what was exposed was disgusting, months if not years of detritus; food, pens, pencils, paper and loads and loads of dust. This was right in the entrance to the counter and many comments were made by customers and some even turned around and left. I pointed this out to a member of staff at the counter and she came to have a look and quickly brought a brush and dust pan and swept in up, I would imagine not her job and especially not during service. Perhaps a review of the cleaning process should be made and further instructions about level of cleaning practice delivered to whoever is responsible for that duty. I’ve given a good score for staff, service and drinks but only a one for cleanliness.

A lovely cafe that is perfectly situated for something tasty to eat & drink after you have had a leisurely look around the delightful City of Wells, or a visit to the stunning Cathedral that is steeped in English history. This café sell a wide range of hot & cold beverages that include various hot & cold coffee varieties, hot chocolate, tea, milkshakes & smoothies, plus breakfasts, toasted sandwiches, panini's, danish pastries, biscuits plus some delicious looking cake slices, I visited on a very busy Saturday lunchtime & ordered a large strong cappuccino with a cookies & cream slice from the friendly & very polite server, I then waited further along the counter to receive my cake after my drink was freshly made but sadly after finding the only available table to sit at, I took a sip of my coffee which was a good temperature but very weak in taste even though I was offered a stronger blend, my cake was a good size but needed chilling as it was quite warm, so a bit sickly. I look forward to revisiting at a later date but will ask for an extra shot of coffee, this store is also very pet friendly which is ideal if you have your dog with you.

Popped for coffee and cake. Both nice but, it was soooo cold in there. Air con was on full blast bowing cold air and the door was wide open. It was cloudy and 13 degrees outside. A total waste of energy and spoiled our visit. Gulped the coffee down and left asap

If you like your chocolate "frappe" devoid of ice, milky, and tasting of too much sugar, this is the place for you. Fortunately, there is a Costa over the road so at least you can still enjoy the delights of Wells.

This is a large coffee shop with a reasonable selection of cakes and savouries to eat in or takeaway. We enjoyed two very good flat whites and the service was efficient and helpfil. Clean toilets too and plenty of staff.

We came here for refreshment during our shopping trip to Wells. My companion ordered a flat white, and I plumped for a mug of black coffee. Wow, talk about refreshing - it was like a shot in the arm! Totally revitalising and a gorgeous taste. It was the best coffee I've had in years and years! Love it, love it. The cafe itself is spacious and well-designed with nice clean decor, and the toilets are pristine. Highly recommended!!

We visited here on a wet day in Wells, looking for somewhere to sit and have a coffee while having 2 dogs with us we came across this coffee shop. It gives a good first impression with pleanty of room between each table, and the coffee did not dissapoint much better than the other big coffee shops, would definitely use again while visiting Wells. The member of staff who took our order was friendly and welcoming.

The layout inside was lovely and the disabled loo was clean and tidy. The coffee was good and made to my specifications. A relaxed atmosphere BUT someone had let their little darlings crayon all over the fireplace and the decorative logs. Why have they not been cleaned or replaced?

My partner and I cannot resist a Coffee #1 - Fair Trade, Eco-Friendly and with a good range of cakes, biscuits and snacks. Unfortunately on our second visit here they did not have any of my favourite Belgium chocolate cake - But saying that, I cannot deny them 5 Stars for the cappuccinos and Berry and Hibiscus tea!

Coffee#1 Wells is a comforting and efficient coffee shop, among the many others in Wells. You can usually always find a seat, whilst admiring the recently redecorated interior. The staff are always upbeat and friendly, and I really appreciate the little details like the peg board on the counter with a funny weekly quote!

There is a group of young male workers at this branch that constantly give the impression they are doing the client a massive favour by serving this demanding product - Coffee !

My wife and I met up with our son and decided to go to Coffee#1. In the past it’s been ok, but can be a bit noisy, which indeed it was. However, this time what annoyed me was the pot of tea came with a dirty cup. When I went back to the counter to ask for a clean one, the staff member said “it’s not dirt, it’s just coffee grounds” as if that justified a lapse in hygiene, before giving me a clean cup. So it’s ok to give customers a dry cup with stuck on coffee grounds now, is it? And how was I supposed to know that? This is the reason why I normally go to a local cafe, they take pride in what they do.

We just happened to call in and had quite the most delicious cup of coffee. There was no crowded queue and we were able to sit in comfortable seating and watch the world go by. I preferred it to the bigger chains.

Calling itself Coffee #1 and having pictures of so called celebs on the wall does not signify that it does good coffee. As a ardent drinker of fresh coffee I have to say the coffee I had was disgusting. So bad in fact that one mouthful was enough.

They always do a nice cup of decaf here and I was delighted to find they also provide a box for us slug-infested gardeners to help ourselves to bags of used coffee grounds to deter the little pests.

My husband and I went in a for coffee and cake yesterday as it looked ok. I always have an Americano and asked how many shots did they put in the regular size and the large, with the intention of having one less in either, as I usually find it too strong. I was told that either size had two shots. I queried the price difference of £2.15 and £2.50 and asked was it just for water. The assistant did not know. I said I will have 2 shots in a large but I was not paying 35p for water. Another young lady then came over and without even looking at me, said charge for large. I again queried the price, she said if you don't like it write to head office. In terms of if you don't like it you can lump it. I said fine I will leave. Which I did, actually walked around to Pickwicks, which is family run and they make everything themselves, very welcoming. Don't put up with their cheek there are plenty of better places in Wells.

A board outside said two Smoothies or Frappes for the price of one. Did not mention that they had to be the same, not size or type but exactly the same. Espresso frappe had no discernable vanilla syrup and certainly no whipped cream. Staff not that welcoming. Got a table by the door as very hot and humid further in (weather wet and windy).Will not visit again given better choices in Wells.

Coffee #1 is a great local chain of coffee shops that have opened over the South West over the last 8-or so years. The Wells branch is central (right on the high street), serves delicious of slightly pricey coffee, and has a dauntingly large menu of smoothies, juices, hot chocolates, weird and wonderful types of coffee, as well as serving sandwiches, paninis, salads, cakes, and pastries (again, somewhat pricey, but not bad).Not many Wells coffee places have WiFi, and while this one does and is a large enough place that you don't feel bad about coming in to do a bit of laptop work over the course of the day, it does get rather bustling due to its central location, its size, and its reliability.All in all, a nice place. Good coffee (their flat whites are lush).

I had an Americano here one friday morning and it was very tasty! The atmosphere within the coffee shop is super cozy and pretty quiet. The coffee I had was super tasty and had a unique taste. I would highly recommend! I also had a smoothie which was mediocore and quiet expensive, but the coffee was great.

Struggling to find somewhere to eat in Wells on a busy Sunday lunchtime, we went in here as a final straw and were very pleasantly surprised. Friendly, efficient staff, good food and coffee and available seating.

Very wide range of coffees, teas and hot chocolates. Nice choice of filter coffee in particular. Given it was a chilly, if bright Feb. morning I plumped for their minty hot chocolate which was excellent and most appreciated.

Quality control is lacking here of late. Coffee is watery and palid, tastes more like coffee flavoured milk. Hard to know if its a lack of staff training or the staff don't care about the output. Either way, I'd avoid.

A quirky place with a mixture of odd tables and chairs. Very spacious and looked very popular, Sunday morning and really buzzing. I was passing through with a coach party and only wanted a coffee. The beaker of latte was delicious we both really enjoyed it.Plenty of cakes, snacks and savouries too choose from too. A good loo suitable for disabled. All very clean. The service from the friendly staff was good too. will call again if in the are.

We regularly pop in here for a coffee, cake at the weekend. Great selection of food/ snacks, but recently we have noticed all cakes contain nuts, and they have moved the cakes around the corner and then put a table in front of it.... I wouldn't want to be sat there as everyone looks over you to see cake selection, move it back to how it was. More staff needed to keep that quality of service as the staff are always extremely busy. Slow to clear tables at those busy times..Overall a great place to go, avoid market days as you may get a drink but no where to sit.. always grab table before ordering

Like Coffee#1 out of all the chains, but can get busy on Saturdays which can lead to longer queues, but worth it as the coffee is better than Costas.

We called in on Boxing Day. Maybe not a good time to judge as there was little else open, and the few staff that were here were being kept very busy. This place had been recommended to us as being gluten-free friendly, but when I asked the young lady behind the counter what was available, she pointed out a chocolate brownie and 2 other cakes. Although on the top shelf, none of these were covered and there was at least one other cake on the same shelf that was not gluten-free so cross contamination was an issue. We decided to opt for just a cup of tea which was not very hot, and we were only given one saucer with our 2 cups.The single toilet was in need of a good clean, and there was little toilet paper available. The red cord for disabled users to pull in an emergency had been tied up, so if an elderly or disabled person had a fall, they would not be able to call for help.As I say, this was on Boxing Day, when other cafes were not open, and the staff were overstretched. On the plus side, there was a large choice of drinks available. Perhaps on a different day I would give a different review. I would certainly not recommend to a coeliac customer.
