Had the upgraded room, but not worth the extra money. Bath tap didn't work (had to fill it using the overhead shower), water was on the cold side, toilet ran all night, many missing bulbs, poor decor, dodgy plug on iron, iron burn on carpet, awful stairs when carrying luggage, dirty windows, broken blinds, pigeons in kitchen so half of evening menu not available. Staff were nice and breakfast mainly good (bread requested was toasted and burnt - were told they had no more bread even though others were served after us). Look to book elsewhere.

Fantastic stay, over a weekend for a wedding party (I booked 3 rooms). Rooms obviously vary in quality a little but all very well presented in a style suiting the age of the property (eg: large bathroom with roll top bath), and lovely welcoming public areas with other small snugs. Even better than that was that the staff were so accommodating and helpful throughout. Special mention to Caitlin who was around every day but everyone was fantastic. Thank you so much.

Lovely location, great service, room was more form over function (nowhere to unpack clothes, other than 2 pegs over the only mirror, and the bath taps leaked) . I understand that a refurb is planned which should resolve any room issues as all other aspects were great.

The hotel and restaurant/bar were great. The staff are pretty nice and helpful. The only issue I had was being on the court side room, I understand we most likely had to stay there because of the dog. However, it’s not the best if you want a quiet night in and we were there when they had a live band. They do offer earplugs and sleeping masks to help, so that’s nice. The shower had some hair left, I’m not too fussy on that as the house keeping team probably didn’t notice it but made me wonder if it was cleaned properly. The walls are also very thin. Apart from those points, we enjoyed our stay and appreciate the staff. I forgot to take pictures of the room and shower but the images you see from their website is how the rooms look, loved the decor. I would recommend visiting, plus the location is great.

The relaxed atmosphere and friendly service at The Archangel made it a generally enjoyable stay. We did not sleep well as the room (number one, at the front of the pub) was very noisy, even with the window closed. As well as general noise from vehicles passing in the night and rattling over a loose manhole cover, all the bins in the central square were collected at the crack of dawn and the pub's bottles were tipped out and collected at 5am. We may have been unlucky as it was Bank Holiday and perhaps the bin collections were earlier than usual. Next time we would ask for a room at the back. We loved the rustic style of room decor and the spacious bathroom with a wonderful metal roll top bath which filled very rapidly with piping hot water. There was a good choice of main breakfast dishes which we enjoyed, although service on bank holiday Monday morning was very slow and it took over an hour to order and eat, with one of our dishes forgotten and further delayed. The mezzanine dining area above the bar is very attractive and we really enjoyed our evening meal, with exceptionally friendly and prompt service from our waiter. Two cocktails for £15 during the happy hour was a great deal!

Fantastic location and lovely rooms. Would happily go back. Very minor/slight issues which didn't bother us but would help to get all round 5 stars. Parking was a bit unclear although not a huge issue but when you are traveling somewhere new it is helpful to know details in advance. Breakfast was fine/ok. Staff great, nice vibe and even enjoyed live music. Perfect visit on Sat night when Sun market is on next day as you are right in middle and we had breakfast and got around before too crowded.

The pub is lovely and nicely decorated with lots of charm and the staff are lovely but I would definitely not stay here again. Despite the bed being comfy, there is a giant fire exit green light in the room on the ceiling that never goes off (we wondered why they supplied sleep masks) and the shower room was quite crusty with missing sealant around the tiles and a shower head that could really benefit from being replaced. If you're desperate somewhere to stay then I guess here is fine, but otherwise I'd give it a miss and just come for drinks. Also, believe the previous reviews about the paper thin walls 😬

Our room was accessed directly from the beer garden with tables right outside the door, so very noisy and no chance to relax after a long drive. We thought this might have been why the room was supplied with earplugs for guests. We were wrong. It turns out the earplugs were because of the paper thin walls and door to the adjoining room. We used the earplugs but they didn't help much with the couple next door getting to know each other at 1am, 2am, 3am, 5am and 6am. Fair play to them, but it kind of ruined our £149 one night stay. The staff didn't care and just said "there's nothing we can do about it".

I have been delighted with the Archangel ever since I discovered it shortly after my sister moved to Frome, but wanted to reserve judgment until I had visited the place a few times. I am happy that my initial enthusiasm has been justified by experience and I now regard the 'Angel as a dear and trusted friend. Its location in the very centre of Frome makes it ideal for exploring the vibrant community here, with easy links to local transport. Even the station is reached by a pleasant walk through the beautiful Doddens Hill nature reserve. I have now tried a representative selection of the rooms available, including the quiet frankly bonkers Indulgence Special, with its giant freestanding bath - even if it should come with the warning traditionally applicable to attic rooms: Duck or Grouse! My favourite remains the decidedly cranky single (but oh so comfortable) bedded Room 2, with its shower reached by its own short staircase, but as I got the Indulgence on a free upgrade, I'm not complaining. The food here is uniformly excellent, and I've eaten my way through the entire menu without finding a single dud dish. Indeed they have saved the best until my most recent visit - the Pie of the Day is a masterpiece! The chicken and bacon filling is generous, the sauce delicious and the casing both crunchy and delectable with its cheese crusting. Quite the best pies my sister and I have eaten anywhere. From my very first experience when Gemma booked me in, I have felt I had fallen amongst friends. I've long been a fan of Butcombe ales, and the selection here has become a favourite of both my sister and me. On a sunny day the courtyard is a delight and a place to appreciate the quirky character of this ancient and distinguished coaching inn. I shall be returning many times...

Staff were fantastic, everyone who served us was friendly - at check in, for drinks, at dinner and in the morning for breakfast. Room was really clean. Unfortunately we didn’t get a good sleep due to the lack of sound insulation from the room next door - maybe due to the interconnecting door. We could hear extremely loud snoring all night and the woke very early with an alarm and then we heard them go about everything in the morning. We heard their conversation word for word. It not only meant we didn’t sleep well but made us a feel a bit uncomfortable! There was also a really really bright light in the room - a safety demand I think - but it was so bright that added to us not getting a good night. Shame as the pub was lovely and staff are amazing.

Stayed with a one year old and my parents for one night this week, we booked through the central reservation line for Butcombe stays a single room with travel cot and a superior room (with roll top bath). Had a few issues on arrival - parking was not located where advised when booking, then rooms were on the first floor when requested ground (not easy with a pram)! But it got much better from there - the rooms themselves are fantastically appointed and comfortable. My parents enjoyed the bath and double sinks and my daughter loved that our room placement actually meant she could easily run between us. We had a fabulous meal at the restaurant, kindly offered in a private space given how delayed our check-in had been, and then breakfast the next morning was brilliant. My main take-away is to be extra vigilant and call again the night before to confirm arrangements when travelling with a baby, but would certainly stay again. A lot of thanks to Jasper, Lee and Eve who helped us so much.

Food as cold as the welcome... Such a shame to say that the Sunday lunch here was awful, but it was. There is a lot to suggest that it should be good - the ingredients seemed good quality, the offering and pricing seems right... Staying at another hotel opposite the Archangel, we ventured in for drinks and were delighted with the welcoming atmosphere and the cheerful staff - we sat in one of several "sitting rooms" off a covered walkway that leads through to the back bar estaurant. A couple of these sitting rooms have huge roaring fires and the staff were happy to stoke them when they start to burn down. We enjoyed trying many of the cocktails that were on a special price for two - in fact we tried them on two nights as we liked them so much. We got chatting to the manager of the hotel, who showed us a couple of their lovely bedrooms - we wished we were staying at the Archangel this time! Please note that the hotel is due for redecoration works in late Spring 2025 so check first if you plan to book accommodation. Had a family Christmas get together, table was booked, had to wait an hour to be seated, room was upstairs, not very inviting, table wasn’t laid apart from name cards. No Christmas crackers, asked if there were any crackers, told, only on Christmas day? Our starter which was pear, rhubarb, beetroot with goats cheese and walnuts was all a bit thrown together in a bowl. Looked like it had been stored in the fridge for 24 hours. The Turkey mains was terrible, not hot, undercooked pigs n blankets, very little gravy, no seasoning to the food, sprouts and gravy came out separately about 30 minutes later, the sprouts were almost raw! Dessert was no different, luckily I had cheese board, which you can’t really get wrong, however some family members had the poached pear, the pear was also raw, impossible to cut even with a knife. The chocolate rice pudding came out, about 30 minutes late, we had asked for jugs of water at the start, these appeared at least an hour later. Overall, everyone was disappointed, the manageress had said they were busy that day and under staffed, she took the desserts off the bill, along with the 10% surcharge, also gave us a 10% discount on the whole meal. I am leaving this review based on facts, maybe this can help them understand the overall impact of a bad meal and service and hopefully can improve from it, would I eat there again, Id have to think long and hard about it. The Archangel is in the centre of Frome, steps away from key sites like Cheap St, Catherine Hill and the popular Frome Independent Market (runs on the first Sunday of the month). I chose to stay there as a treat, expecting a little bit of luxury, choosing a single room with bath as I was travelling alone. I was given a single room with a shower which I didn’t mind. Unfortunately, the room didn’t live up to expectations. It was tiny, dark and I was particularly surprised that I could hear the people in the room next to me - heritage buildings usually have thick walls. Also, even though the bar closes at 10pm, there was loud talking in the bar downstairs well past 11.30pm - I was woken early in the morning by the upstairs guests walking around on the wooden floors the next day too. If you have accessibility needs, this is not the place for you - there were stairs everywhere, flagstone (uneven floors in gone main bar) and even steps up to the shower. The sink was so close to the toilet, my knees were under the sink when sitting on the toilet - it would be too squishy for larger guests to use comfortably. It was not at all worth the £141.30 paid for the room - the only redeeming qualities were the staff I interacted with were lovely. For example, I was allowed to check in 1.5hrs early. I wish I’d saved my money and stayed elsewhere, I wouldn’t recommend to anyone.

Good place to stay in a central location with a lot of history. Quirky would be a good description and the breakfast was excellent, best poached eggs ever with my smoked trout eggs Benedict.

This a great hotel, the rooms are lovely, beds are comfy and the staff were great. Right in the centre of town with plenty of restaurants and pubs within a ten minute walk of here. The breakfast at this place was genuinely one of the best I’ve ever had, fair play to chef 🤌

Very unusual pub, lots of private seating, hard to find somewhere to park, and in the pub itself did smell horrible. Staff are friendly

Oh dear. Sad, tired and dirty. This used to be a great venue. The food was, at best, average. The gents loo had a large puddle and nobody seems to be interested in doing anything about it. The ladies loo was scruffy and dirty. Needs investment or even just a coat of paint.

I stayed here for a night on a cycle trip. The staff were really welcoming and helpful with storing my bike, nothing was too much trouble. The room was a bit small but characterful and nicely decorated. The pub itself is full of character and the food and service were both fabulous. And of course the beer was top notch. Thoroughly recommended.

Quite possibly the best UK hotel experience I can remember. The archangel is absolutely amazing from the moment you walk in off the street and throughout . Every detail is beautiful; the charming courtyard garden bar, the immaculate rest rooms, the restaurant and best of all, the room we stayed in. We opted for one of the attic rooms with roll top bath and so glad we did. Really comfortable bed and despite town central location, unbelievably quiet. The restaurant serves amazing food. Breakfast was outstanding btw. Every member of staff was attentive, courteous and lovely. They all added to our stay immensely. We occasionally come to Frome for gigs and the archangel is now our go to for future visits. Love it here x

Just stayed at the Archangel this weekend for a couple of nights. The team were very Welcoming. Check in was smooth and everything fully explained to us about our stay. Our bedroom was in the courtyard which we didn't mind but for others who were hoping for a romantic retreat this may not be for you as the walls are barely thin. You could hear the pub drinkers chatting away whilst in your room and you can hear the hoteliers in the room next door cough. Location was brilliant short 2min walk to the station should you want to go into Bath (don't drive it's a nightmare parking) or you a literally on the main high street of Frome if you stay local. All in all had a lovely stay and will stay again when visiting friends in Frome.

Enjoyed our stay, warm inviting feel to the hotel, has a few side rooms with open fires and sofas. Bar area and seating and stairs to an open mezzanine and further seating for diners. We had drinks and our evening meal at the hotel and were very good. Our room (6) was off the main entrance hallway up a very tight narrow stairs ( be aware of this if you are infirm ). The room had the wow factor as it was a converted loft space, open plan on split level with rolled top brass bath tub. Usual coffee/tea etc, only small issue which we find in a lot of hotel rooms is they dont put any power sockets next to the mirror so you cant blow dry your hair in front of a mirror, annoying common issue. No parking, but we used the council run carpark next to M&S behind the hotel only pay to 6pm, renew at 9am the following day, dont use the larger Eurocarpark right next to it as more expensive and limited time allowed. The staff were all very welcoming and attentive and would recommend this hotel.

Though the food was good, the employees were not. They could barely be bothered, and their behavior made a poor impression on the whole experience. We traveled from Virginia, USA and it was the only restaurant we were not happy with during our entire 3-week trip.
