Go there quite a few times during the year always lovely food .

Skin on fish! Stodgy chips! Miserable staff! When I pay extra to have haddock I expect the skin to be removed. Drove all the way down here for fish and chips on the beach. I'm glad the seagulls were happy with the below par fish. We won't be returning. Poor quality food.

Very disappointing takeaway . Fish batter was soggy and uncooked in parts and chips were just tasteless. Fish was served from a cabinet - don't know how long it sat there. Salt and vinegar was applied by the staff - no extra condiments were offered. Just very sloppy!! Pity, as we have had good meals from there in the past.

Always had lovely food from here and staff are always friendly .and one lovely lady went above and beyond for me today !thank you sally x

Fish meal for adult, (Huss), was more burnt batter than fish. Curry sauce was inedible. Childrens meals were good. Told waitress I was not happy with my meal to no avail. Desserts were ok. £54.00 total which I felt a little high as the surroundings were run-down and the waiting staff were in stained uniforms. We went with high expectations because of previous reviews. Perhaps a takeaway next time would be nicer?

Been to this fish and chip shop a couple of times, the food is very nice. Unfortunately on both occasions they have missed items from the order. The second visit I checked before leaving, so I didn't have to come all the way back. Good job I did!

Curry sauce and chips for lunch, toilets opposite and found off road short term parking. Nice snack. Could have been a tadge warmer.

Tasty chips, eaten in the car looking out on a very moody sea.

Sadly we won't be returning after many years of coming here. We thought after our last visit, it may have just been a one off but for us, doesn't appear to be the case. We never minded that we would have to queue as the wait was always worth it, now however, not the case. Scampi was most certainly not freshly cooked as it used to be. It was warm and went cold very quickly. The breadcrumbs were not crunchy but more chewy hence vile and couldn't eat it. Chips would have been fine but again just warm. The fish was ok but the batter not crisp, uncooked and stodgy. Such a shame.

So good we ate here twice in the same day! We always come here whenever we come to Hayling for an impromptu day out. We arrived just after opening on Sunday, and was in and out nice and quickly. Chips were beautiful, battered sausages lovely and crunchy and a great amount of salt and vinegar! A rarity for a chippy! We were very happy eating it while watching the sea. After our day exploring the beaches we decided to get the same meal again to complete the day. Again brilliantly cooked and no complaints from our picky kids. Thank you very much :)

Fish and chips is great, but they are supplied in cardboard boxes, probably due to new anti plastic legislation, but I feel that the food is going to drop through the bottom of the box before I have finished eating

Why do I bother with this place, I'll never learn. No matter how many people are in the queue they NEVER have enough cod ready, Then they rush the cooking and the batters not cooked and the chips were also under cooked. When they can see the queue out the door why don't they ask people what they want, then they can get the fish cooking while their in the queue, by the time the person reaches the till to pay, it's almost ready.....It's not rocket science. Time to try a new chippy when in Hayling.

We had takeaway. The batter was soggy but the fish was good. Chips were chunky and tasty but quite a few black bits. Paid for a curry sauce but was told it wasn't available. The batter sausage was tiny. We'd had takeaway from here many years ago which was excellent but sadly this time not so good.

First time for me, and the last customer at lunchtime, but the fish was freshly cooked for me and was great.

Fish was not hot and looked under cooked. Very small portion for the very expensive price. I won't be returning.

Had fish and chips here for the first time this evening as just moved here and it was so good! Also staff where lovely and friendly, had a nice easy going chat with the girls behind the counter. Highly recommend!

Lovely chippy with vegan options. Very efficient system for paying and collection. Chips were lovely and crisp on the outside and fluffy on the inside. Well priced and the food comes in cardboard box which makes it easier to ear on the beach.

Sadly we visited today to grab some Chips for lunch and once we got to the beach and opened them we discovered pale uncooked chips that were almost raw. A real shame as we have always visited here when in Hayling. Will go elsewhere in future.

Fantastic fish & chip shop - brilliant vegetarian and vegan options! Always difficult to find a good veggie range, but Coastguard has great options with plenty of choice. Delicious chips and very friendly staff.

Amazing chips! Definitely go back there however I did have to wait 45 minutes to get them. The service seemed slow but it could be that each person in the queue is ordering for a group of people.

What impressed me was that there was an option of small portions. The fish was not overcooked, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

We had spent the day at the beach then went to see the sunflower farm after which we came back for fish and chips. We had Cod and one lot of chips between both of us and it was plenty. One thing that I was particularly pleased with is that the batter did not have mil as I am lactose intolerant. The fish was thick juicy and such a delicious flavour. in fact I think it was the best we have ever had. It was not greasy and the batter was crisp and tasty. The one portion of chips was plenty for both of us. The chips were also delicious. They had a large selection of dishes to choose from. Sadly they only had the cod in the fish selection. Having said that it was delicious. The on;y snag was even though there were plenty of staff and a lot of food was cooked the service was painfully slow. with proper staff management the wait would have been much shorter. The cafe is opposite the beach so perfect for seaside fish and chips.

Popped in here expecting to wait (queue outside) but most were waiting for rake out. Warm welcome, clean and a good varied menu inc decent coffee. Everything was fresh and hot, enjoyable meal. The entrance is the unassuming plain white door to the left of the fish and chips queue.

We always come here when we visit Hayling Island and the food never disappoints.

We go here every time we visit Littlehampton. A walk along the sea front so close even with children. Big selection of food - my children are diary intolerant but there are options available, including ice cream. Food is very good and big menu. Lovely views overlooking the water

Chips came completely uncooked and the cod didn’t the slightest bit of crisp, it was beyond soggy ! I have had great fish and chips at the coastguard in the past but this time it was embarrassingly below standards…

Great place to go in Hayling Island

The fish (cod) here is just the best. I don't know if anywhere else that serves such a chunky peice of meat - it's simply delicious and we always look forward to visiting Hayling and eating our food from here whilst sitting on the beach. It's such a treat, good value and totally recommended 🙂

I ordered 4x fish and chips & 4 curry sauces, service was so quick compared to some I have been to back home, the only quibble I have is I never had no where near the amount of chips as the other 3, In all tho very very nice food,

The food on our last visit was terrible. Chips aren't fresh and nice as they used to be skinless cod doesn't mean batterless and the scampy was lukewarm and soggy

A life saver as it was open on a Sunday evening. Very busy which is always a good sign. Fast efficient service. A big bonus is that the car park opposite is a lovely location to sit and eat your fish and chips.

Unfortunately, this time around the chips were under cooked..... I've been here many times and never had an issue but today all of our chips were under cooked. We even seen others on the beach saying exactly the same. Like oven chips but raw!

We ate in this fish & chip restaurant as a family and had a delicious fresh meal with friendly and courteous service. The setting is basic but clean & welcoming. The food was brilliant. One of our party is vegan and enjoyed the fishless fillet. Portions were large and prices very reasonable. Situated opposite a large carpark and the seafront. I would definitely use this restaurant again. Thanks to Katie for her service.

Had a fabulous sit-in meal at this cafe/restaurant. The service from Katie was really friendly and helpful and the food was delicious and freshly cooked. The fish &chips plus the fishless fillet were all delicious. So nice to have a good vegan option. Situated across the road from a large car park and the beach. This is a great find!

Drove 60 mile round trip as used to be very good, since change in staff, it has gone downhill, very small portions not worth the time or money, quality and service not good

Yesterday, kid serving , was lazy and decided not to fry more chips for my order and just gave me 1/2 a portion.. I hope management have a word with him

Had cod and chips from here twice during a 4 night stay on the island. Chips lovely and soft and tender fish with crispy batter. Delicious! Quick service too even at a peak time. Definitely recommend.

Decent food but sometimes you get 1 vegan sausage and sometimes you get 2? 1 isn't really enough for a portion

Came across this place as we are here on holiday, and I was really hoping to find a good chippy that does gluten-free battered cod, and I'm so happy we found Coastguard Cafe! We had takeaway and then sat in the car looking across the beach to enjoy it (in high winds and rain). Fish was beautifully cooked, and chips were amazing. Will definitely make a bee-line here if we're ever on the island again!

Fish was good the chips was soggy and the staff needs a better training when deal with the costumer we can see it they weren't happy .

We always come here for fish and chips whenever in Hayling. Often we eat within the restaurant where food and service are excellent. Portion sizes are generous. I would suggest that previous reviews are somewhat misleading.

Absolutely horrible takeaway from the coastguard cafe. Everything was greasy and lukewarm. Messed our order up and had to return for them to sort out as they had put cheese on my daughters chicken burger. Man behind the counter was seen trying to scrape the melted cheese off the burger! Batter on the cod was soggy and chewy and the chips were a greasy soft mess.

Super friendly team/service. We were thrilled to find vegan 'fish' on the menu and it didn't disappoint.

Oh dear what has happened to what used to be a decent fish and chip takeaway Greasy soggy chips, very small piece of cod and very hard crispy batter, luke warm scampi that was taken from the warming top plate that was so over cooked that must have been there for 30 - 60 mins Don't waste your money and go here. It really has to be one of the worst F&C takeaway ever. Almost inedible and extremely poor

Best fish and chips on the island

Service was slow for a busy time, would've thought they would have a speedier system to accommodate high demand that day. Food great as usual not overly priced for location, ate my food on the beach which made a perfect setting for a sunny evening.

Thought i'd try a fish and chip supper for a change and treat.... wish i hadn't bothered, the 2 smallest pieces of haddock I've ever seen, like childs portions and soggy chips £20. Don't bother unless you are desperate.

We had vegan fish and chips, vegan mince and onion pie and ice cream. All very nice. The staff has been super nice.

Chips were undercooked, fish and sausage was oily, was specified to have vegan cheesy chips but given normal cheese and became very unwell. I visited about 6pm on bank holiday Monday 29/05/2023. Granted it was busy as there was a queue outside

3 of us had fish chips and mushy peas the plates were full and the people who worked there were so lovely really great lunch would definitely recommend

This is probably the busiest food shop on Hayling Island, unfortunately there's always a que outside of it whenever the sun is out meaning long waiting times - from which you could infer that the quality of their food reflects that and it does, sometimes. The quality of their food seems to be fairly inconsistent, it just depends on who is working at the time which to me, seems like a training issue. I have been going here for over a decade now. If the issue changes I shall update this review.

I was very impressed with the vegan options and the filet less fish was the best I've tasted. Cute little bustling cafe.

Gone down.. it's been our go to place when visiting for years, all food cold. Asked for vegan burger, was told it was plant based, got very cold v.soggy/mushy veg burger that resemble baby food in a bun with a handful of cold chips straight in the bin. Girl serving unfriendly and unhelpful.

What a shame this has been taken over , used to be a great fish and chips shop , miserable staff behind the counter no smile no chat just miserable, fish and chips were poor the seating area was closed so no where to sit , no salt and vinegar on the counter , too much trouble to give you anything that you ask , really disappointing that's for sure

Visited the coastguard cafe this weekend with family, shop looks great and the food was delicious as always!

Tried the new menu, much more modern with a larger selection of vegetarian & vegan options. The quality and service is still outstanding!

We visit this cafe several times a year and it is always worth the journey from Basingstoke. On this occasion we sat inside as it was a bit chilly outside. The cod and chips was excellent as usual. The menu has been slightly reduced to speed up service but we were more than happy with the choice provided.

Boy, dog and I drove down from Warwickshire for a weekend trip and wanted fish and chips by the sea. Found the Coastguard Cafe online, messaged to ask if they were open Easter Day, got a super quick response. Today we had a lovely fresh fish and chips dinner, as good as all the other reviews promised. Thank you.

So lovely to see vegan food on the menu. I had the vegan fishless fish, chips, mushy peas & salad, really tasty, hot & filling. The manageress was really friendly & helpful with the food options. Thank you for catering for vegetarian/vegans.

Great food reasonable price very helpful staff
