We booked for 4 for Sunday Lunch. Restuarant was quiet so we had great service. Menus choice was good and very reasonable. We have four prawn starters which were nicely presented (one needed a bit more sauce) Two roast beef & two chicken dishes for mains. Very good indeed, good portions, with nice selection of fresh veg. Rice pud and an apple crumble for two f us . Really enjoyed it.

We were eager to visit Coasters after their apparent multi-million pound facelift and checked out the evening al a carte menu on their website. It all looked very tempting if a little pricey but went ahead with the booking. On arrival they were unable to find our booking, despite it having been confirmed, but managed to squeeze us into an almost deserted dining room...... The waitress who attended to us was witless. God only knows what the trainee who scurried along behind her made of it all. We watched as she wandered aimlessly from one table to another followed by her bemused cohort, trying to find the correct one to offload the meals she was carrying. To cap it all, she knew nothing about the various drinks and had to 'go and find out' more than once. Disappointingly, the photocopied menus bore no resemblance to what we had seen on the website. A rather bland selection of 'dumbed-down' meals but still with the same high price tag. Clearly the original chef had some foreboding and quite wisely scarpered only to be substituted by somebody significantly less accomplished. The meals in themselves were even more disappointing than the Xeroxed versions but hunger overcame the tasteless and poorly presented offerings. Thank goodness the Shipyard ale made it somewhat palatable. We were amused to find a large chunk of cork, at least the size of a placemat coming away from the underside of our table. By this time the antics of the hapless staff had become the highpoint of our evening. Needless to say the table near us were equally unimpressed to find out the staff knew nothing of their 'pre-ordered meals', nor of Simon who took them....... There was one saving grace, our occasional waiter Johnathon. He dealt with the dilapidated table part amusingly and seemed to have an inkling of how things should run, unlike the manager who was not in evidence. All in all a very disappointing hour wasting £70 which would have been better spent on a couple of take-aways. They've made s pretty good effort to upscale the place, but quite clearly the chef, manager and staff, with the exception of the evening's saviour, need to be replaced. Will we return? Not on your Nelly.

We purchased an extra portion of vegetables to share as there were none served with the sausages unfortunately.. We had a bottle of wine which was reasonably priced. We did not have desserts but the coffee and shortbread biscuits was especially good. We were not rushed so were able to sit and chat. We will certainly return.

A party of twelve of us went for a birthday celebration. We pre ordered our meals and were booked in for 1.30pm. We finally got our meal at 2.30, and at varying intervals. The food was tasty enough, but barely warm, and very few veg on plates of those that had Sunday roast. we visited Coasters at The Dunes Hotel recently. The hotel is beautiful and the restaurant also is decorated in a modern contemporary style. On arrival we had a drink in the bar as we waited to be seated in the restaurant. We waited quite a long time until eventually we were seated in the the new conservatory. The server expained that 2 of the mains were sold out, which isnt brilliant for a saturday night. We waited nearly an hour for our meals to turn up.2 of us ordered pizzas which were just very ordinary, mine was supposed to have stilton cheese on it,I think there were about 2 crumbs of it and not much more cheese. My friend had asked for Sole which server said he had just sold the last(so that was 3 mains off) so she went for seabass,it came in a large bowl swimming in what looked like dirty dishwater. My husband ordered fish and wanted fries instead of hand cut chips but server said they didnt do them. When we compained about all the meals the server said he would knock the price of the meals off the bill.He just didnt seem bothered and never came near the table again. The wine was also very expensive at £20 a bottle.Overall very disappointed and we wont be visiting again

Only a dozen small single serving pots of jam available and one small bowl of cream- no sign of a spoon to serve the cream! Had a nice Sunday lunch here today. We had the beef and the lamb. Both had good portions of meat served with mash, roasted potatoes, and a Yorkshire with steamed veg, on a pre warmed plate so the food stayed warm. Followed by an absolutely lovely sticky toffee pudding, which any Cumbrian restaurant worth its salt aught to do very well! The Staff could have been a bit more attentive, this didn’t spoil the meal but I would suggest either having more staff on or better training for the ones you do have, so they pay attention to the smaller things as well as the bigger things. I would go back again.

Came here recently with a group of friends for dinner. We had booked well in advance and had pre ordered our food from the Christmas Dinner menu at £29.95 per person. One of my friends and I had the pate to start. Pate tasted OK but presentation was awful. Small amount of lettuce thrown onto the plate and One triangle, yes One triangle of toast!! Asked if we could have more toast please. Waiter brought 3 pieces of soggy bread and said that was all they had in the hotel!!? Don't know what bread they were going to give their guests at breakfast?? The people in my group that had chosen turkey were in for a shock! Turkey was nice but on the plate with it was just 2 roast potatoes. We waited eagerly for our vegetables and potatoes to arrive. We got no other potatoes! The vegetables were cooked Mediterranean style, drizzled in oil and cooked in the oven and consisted of parsnips butternut squash!! No carrots and most of all no BRUSSEL Sprouts! I have been out many, many times for a Christmas turkey meal and have always been served BRUSSEL sprouts with it. Its tradition! We asked if we could possibly have some to be told no, they are not part of your Christmas Dinner. To top it all there wasn't any pigs in blankets either? My friend had the cheeseboard instead of a dessert and wasn't given a side plate or knife with which to cut the cheese. She had to pay an extra £3.00 for this. All in all a very dissapointing experience especially considering the price we paid.

My partners steak was not cooked to how he asked it to be, I had ordered the salmon and prawns when it arrived there was no prawns and it was far too over cooked my mum's chicken was covered in peppercorns to the point she couldn't enjoy it and my father's burger tasted like bleach! We choose this venue because some of the party we were with had had an excellent meal here when under the previous management. The service was very poor. One of the party asked about gluten free options and received "strange" information about risotto rice containing gluten. The choice of dishes was very disappointing. Very few starters and only 5 puddings with a very overpriced cheese board option. The puddings were so uninspiring that we opted for starters and mains. The hummus (which previously had been delicious) was very disappointing and very oily with no taste of chickpeas and the accompanying sourdough bread was burnt on the bottom. The prawn starter was however very nice. The main courses were the biggest disappointment. The smoked chicken risotto had bits of stringy skin in it. The risotto was watery rather than creamy - a huge disappointment. The seafood risotto was also watery and you could hardly "see" any of the morsels of seafood. The spaghetti bolognaise was bland and all the meals were warm rather than piping hot. Service was very poor. We were not brought enough cutlery for 2 courses - if you use your fork for your starter you do require another one for the main course! At no point were we offered black pepper or parmesan for the pasta dishes. The food quality was poor, bland and a huge disappointment.

Some of us had pizza, others pasta, sausage or fish. all the dishes we fine but not really worth the price. We had a 3 course meal here the other day, we found that the starter was very nice. However the mains were lacking something extra. The pizza was very greasy, and moist, and the risotta was under cooked and watery. The pudding however was a huge disappointment, I had the sticky toffee pudding. Which tasted like it had been frozen and was so very dry. For the price of the food, I did expect better quality. However we did find that the staff were very attentive and provided a great service.

The refurbishment looks good, the menu is varied and the food was generally ok, some nice stuff, but the service ruined the meal. Don't have time to write an essay but found the place/staff unfriendly, slow and badly coordinated, and it wasn't even busy so no excuse. When I was growing up in Barrow it was a culinary wasteland with one mediocre Italian (Nick's) as the only half decent option. Now there are plenty of decent places to eat but this was a new one my mother suggested when on a visit home. This is the hotel restaurant of the Dunes Hotel just off the A590 on the outskirts of Barrow near the Roanhead nature reserve. This is a new build family run hotel so plenty of parking which is always a plus. Once inside we were seated promptly by what seemed like the duty manager. The decor is new with a nautical feel which is appropriate for a navy town like Barrow complete with a funky fishtank. For starters I ordered the salt and pepper calamari with mixed rocket and endive salad, lemon, coriander and baby caper salad. This is an easy to get wrong dish but the batter was nicely judged and the dip give a generous portion a kick. My partner went for the Gorgonzola mushrooms with garlic white wine and cream sauce with herb baked ciabatta. I had a taste and agreed the sauce was gloriously creamy, thick, salty and again a generous portion, Mam went for the tomato soup which was thick, tangy and freshly made. We were all driving so soft drinks all round but again they came in very big glasses and ice and lemon. All the starters were nicely presented on wooden platters and wire baskets without being too pretentious. Mains were great too. My partner went for for the goats cheese and beetroot Frittata with sauted Italian herb potatoes. She said although she enjoyed it was whipped to the consistency of a souffle with the beetroot sauce a touch too acidic, but the potatoes were spot on. I went for the veggie sweet potato, chickpea and red pepper curry with tumeric rice, homemade chips and poppadom. The light curry sauce was full of veg which perhaps could have done with a bit more kick, but a solid effort nonetheless The rice was lovely and fluffy but I wasn't quite sure why the homemade chips were paired with the curry, but who cares when they are as crispy and freshly cut as these were. My mother went for the fish burger which a generous dollop of haddock in a fresh bun with another big basket of the fab chunky chips. Again the portion was very generous and she didn't quite finish it. Service was efficient and friendly throughout which is just how I like it as I can't be doing with endless 'is everything ok with your meal' visits as if it isn't you will soon hear. I've not mentioned prices as we are on the happy hour lunch deal which for us was the two course stater/main deal for £10.95 for two courses so a total bill of under £40 all in was tremendous value for money as the food was well presented, plenty of it and very well cooked. Highly recommended and we will back next time we are home.

We have been coming here now since January at least once every 2 weeks. Slowly working our way through the menu! Happy hour has always been our go to option on the regular as the portions and quality of food are way better than anywhere else for the price. Staff are lovely and always welcoming. We are always recognised on arrival which is nice. Came tonight and had our usual cheesy flat bread but tonight we ordered from the main menu for a treat and we had steaks with surf and turf...winners again and I can honestly say they were the best cooked steaks we have eaten in a long time! Restaurant is always chilled out and a good atmosphere even when it is quiet. Chefs can always be heard having a laugh in the kitchen which is a good sign. Food ALWAYS fab and fresh and have never been able to fault anything apart from not being able to eat a pudding due to the portions being so good! Service is always super efficient. Will see you next week probably :)

Booked in here for lunch and was apprehensive having seen some poor reviews. The design inside is lovely; nice to see something a bit different in this area.

Just back from a lovely late lunch here. Excellent food, lovely decor and first rate service from the staff, particularly Amy! Can really recommend it- I had Gorgonzola Mushrooms and a Flatiron steak, just delicious, and for under £11 if you eat before 5pm. Will definitely go back soon!

Shame my meal wasn't the same .I ordered a steak medium.it came was totally overcooked and dried out to a point where you would almost think it had been double cooked.my wife had sea bass that was very nice she said.

Family anniversary celebration, arrived at 7.45 for 8 pm reservation, place was extremely busy, I believe they had a private celebration on in another room and the restaurant was fully booked.Taken to our table around 8.30. Didn’t take our order until 9.10 pm after we prompted the manager, staters arrived 9.30 pm all of which were nice, mains arrived a little time later 3 off which were paella which were inedible (over salted), my husbands carbonara was lacking in taste,Most guests on the night had waited a long time for meals, was told they had a problem with chefs on the night ?? Lovely place but spoilt by the food, what should have been a special occasion 25 th and a 30 th anniversary, ruined by lack of attention and poor quality off food!!!!

The service was excellent as was the food which was well presented and tasty. The staff were attentive without being obtrusive. The atmosphere was conducive to an enjoyable meal. The restaurant was busy but didn't feel overcrowded or noisy. It was also very reasonable in cost and when we are in Barrow again we will definitely be returning to eat again.

The food was hot, very tasty and the menu was different and full of tasty options, the desert menu was not quite as expansive as the mains and starters menu but overall the food was very good, would recommend trying atleast once !

This should read the Coast restaurant at the Dunes Hotel. I have read a number of reviews knocking the service in my opinion they are wrong. The service was amazing, the atmosphere brilliant and the food was excellent. We had a seafood sharing board to start which was very good with a good choice and variety on the board. We all had liver for mains with one being chicken liver with pasta and the other two being calves liver with mash be careful they are all called fetecini!! The liver was perfectly cooked by Joe and the meal was finished off with good coffee.

This is the Coast restaurant at the Dunes Hotel. Lovely bright interior and fairly busy. Minor niggle, no designated disabled parking so you just hope you are lucky, quite a trek up a slight slope from the main area of the car park.

Four of us had lunch and used the happy hour menu, which is half price. We all enjoyed our food and had good portions. The chips were very chunky and one portion was enough for all of us as a side dish.

Walked around the Dunes (Sandscale Haws National Nature Reserve) and glad we did it after the meal as we definitely need to "walk it off". HUGE portions but irresistible. Gorgonzola mushrooms & the deep fried Aranci di Viso goats cheese starters were lovely. The second course was equally creative but defeated us in volume!

Went for Sunday lunch. Everything good nice meal nicely presented. I had lamb hubby beef when meals came we asked for extra gravy. My husband straight away poured over his beef to realise it mint gravy so he left his meal. I wanted to say something but he declined. Menu a bit confusing. Stated meats for Sunday lunch on menu yet not available there were different meats . Either do what is printed or change your menus

Invited to an evening wedding reception. Nice big spacious room. Bright and airy. Good size dance floor and a bar. However, we had to go through to the restaurant bar, as it was so busy. Bacon sandwiches, and chips were the night time Fayre.

The actual waiting area and restaurant are beautifully decorated. We waited a short while for all our group to arrive, and sat in the bar area. Plenty of staff on duty, but no-one offered to take a drinks order. We asked about our table and were shown through. After about 5 minutes someone came for our food order, so we gave our drinks order first. All the wine glasses on the table were dirty (lipstick on the rims/dirty water type marks in the bowls), so the waitress kindly changed them and said the bar staff don't check them after washing. We asked for a jug of water, and the waiter brought 2 empty glasses at a time. He was only young, but no-one questioned why he didn't use a tray and do one trip?? We then waited around 10 minutes before anyone came back for our food order. The service was quite slow, but the food was excellent, except for the chips. Very pale and greasy. We all had a pizza or pasta special, and they were good sized portions. We then ordered extra drinks. There were only 7 in our party, and only 6 drinks arrived. So one of us then had to go hunting for the missing drink. Plenty of staff stood around. Outside the drains smelled terrible and there was very little lighting in the car park area. A good bright light would help when you're parked at the very far edge of the parking (it was busy because there was a wedding on too). So an odd experience. Good food but slow service. Maybe teething problems??

Enjoyed the scampi and chips. Was worried that the garden peas would be hard and dry but instead they were soft and sweet.

Excellent Sunday lunch in the king Alf. Tables are well spaced out and everyone following the covid rules including a one way system. The staff are extreamly professional and this is evident soon as you arrive. My wife had roast beef with all the trimmings and I had a 14oz gammon steak with fluffy home made chunky chips. The onion rings are superb too. Both meals were very good with huge portions so this is worth bearing in mind if you order a starter.
