Coarse in County Durham

We had the 6 course tasting menu plus supplementary course - it was an absolute delight. The snacks to start with were gorgeous- especially the focaccia, the turkey stuffing was delicious, the smoked salmon was outstanding,the halibut was my absolute favourite especially the sauce, the porchetta was gorgeous and the desserts were unusual but yummy. The textures and tastes work together to produce a very special dining experience.

I decided on the spur of the moment to stop over in Durham. Although by myself I felt sure I’d feel comfortable in Coarse. I had an amazing meal, the staff were friendly, knowledgeable and attentive and I felt absolutely fine as a lone diner. The different flavours and textures of the food are wonderful and inventive and I’ve never been disappointed. Just wish I lived more locally!

We don't get to go to Coarse as often as we would like, but whenever we do it never disappoints. On a cold, dark, dreary November night what could be better than a tasting menu packed with sublime comfort foods, perfect for the time of year? Well, the answer for me, is a tasting menu packed with sublime comfort foods, perfect for the time of year, and accompanied by a wonderful selection of wine pairings. But a word of warning: starve yourself for at least a day in advance - you will need the room. As we left, walking (I waddled) down the road in search of a taxi the cold, dark, dreary November night didn't seem so bad after all.

As usual a first class meal. It was the first week of the Christmas menu which we really enjoyed. Each course was so tasty and flavoursome. Picking a favourite is difficult but if I must then the porchetta was fab. We’ll be back.

Food was excellent, staff were friendly and helpful. We did the wine pairing which I recommend. We had a lovely night, thank you.

This was our 3rd visit to Coarse to celebrate our wedding anniversary with our daughter.All 3 of us really enjoyed our evening!The food was sublime as ever & being seated upstairs for the first time made the evening feel more cosy & relaxed.We will definitely be back. Visited 22nd November

Atmosphere spoilt by a rather noisy Scouser and Yorkie having a cross table conversation. A matter of the customer being right!

Great food, well presented and in a relaxing atmosphere. The initial drink service could have been a bit quicker, we waited 25mins. The rest of the service was good though. Would definitely go back.

Visited here for dinner last week with friends and it lived up to the hype. The tasting menu was fantastic, well balanced and exceptional value for money. It’s on par with some of the best Michelin star restaurants I’ve dined at over the years. Service was great, and the guy who was acting sommelier for the table was full of knowledge. An overall excellent experience. Will absolutely return next year.

This was our 2nd trip to Coarse. We had a the 6 course taster menu, with the extra fish course, and the wine pairing. It was first class, again! The wine accompaniment with each course was amazing, and totally made the dish. The Espresso Martini at the end of the meal (this was extra) was probably the best Espresso Martino I have ever had. We will be back in the New Year.

Excellent food and the service was exceptional. Each course was given a full description by our waiters which actually made the whole experience even better.

It is the third time that my wife and I have visited "Coarse" and it never fails to disappoint. The way they reinvent their menus to such a high standard every time we visit, is a wonderful testament to the great skills of the Chefs. Along with the wine, great service and attention to detail, from all of the staff, shows why this restaurant adds up to probably the best experience for food and drink you can have. Excellent.

The overall experience and food at the restaurant are wonderful. The service is warm, personal, and attentive, which adds to the charm of the dining experience. My only suggestion for improvement would be to collaborate with neighboring businesses to enhance the appearance of the entrance by addressing street waste and bin placement. This would elevate the ambiance and make the overall experience even better.

This place is amazing. The set taster menu changes every 6 weeks and we go every time it changes. Never had a bad menu. Tonight's was gorgeous, the mussels were so tender and I thought I'd died and gone to heaven with the Mexican chocolate.

Delicious food with a nice environment

I love Coarse. I've eaten in many great restaurants in many countries, and it is one of my favourites anywhere. The food is superb: innovative, fresh and genuinely exciting, with brilliantly unexpected combinations of ingredients presented artfully but without pretension, and flavours that are nuanced but vibrant. The wine list is varied and interesting (but please, some Aussie wines!). Decor and ambience are simple, elegant and welcoming, and the staff are always warm and friendly as well as very helpful. Altogether, a stellar experience in an unfussy and informal setting.

We experienced a fantastic taster menu with wine flight. Everything was delicious - particularly the halibut but truly, it was all delicious. We thought the service was excellent too. Can’t wait to come back again!

Wow! What an amazing tasting menu and a beautiful wine pairing. The service and atmosphere of this place are also fantastic. Each dish is carefully throught out and the wine matches it so well. Daniel our main server was friendly and knowledgeable without being overbearing and the rest of the staff jumped in to help where needed. We will most definitely be back!

Just been back to Course and can only reiterate that this is the best food experience in County Durham and given the quality of the food is excellent value for money!!! The Bass and Lobster were outstanding!!!

Really enjoyed the experience, went on a Saturday lunch time and there was a nice relaxed environment. The staff were lovely and friendly and talked about the wines and the food and seemed very knowledgeable. The menu was great, we paid extra for a lobster pasta dish and it was wonderful. The food was tasty and well put together, the portion sizes were ideal and I thought the pricing was very fair for what they serve etc. We both really enjoyed it and I would definitely go back again.

A fabulous lunch on this, our third visit to Coarse. Everything on the menu was cooked perfectly, from the snacks to the venison main course. The staff are welcoming and friendly without being intrusive. We will be making another trip back to Durham soon and we are sure Coarse will be the highlight of our visit.

We went all out and did the 6 course tasting menu with paired wines and it was fantastic. Not only was each plate a work of art, it tasted delicious. We had an exceptional dinner here, one of the best meals we've ever had served in a Scandinavian feel room with a friendly, professional young team. Each course on the 6 course tasting menu was a delicious surprise in taste, texture and presentation. Every mouthful perfect. We sadly live too far away to be regular customers, but will certainly return when we go back to Durham. Highly recommend.

This is my favourite restaurant. I come once a quarter (every time they change the menu) - I always try to bring someone new to introduce them to it! The food is exquisite, wines are divine & it is exceptional value. The staff are friendly & knowledgeable. Cannot recommend highly enough. It’s a small venue, & popular, so cook well in advance if you want a weekend reservation.

Wow! This is our 2nd visit to Coarse and it was just as fabulous as the first! The relaxed, welcoming atmosphere is wonderful, no pretentiousness (which sometimes comes with such a high end dining experience). The food… cannot praise enough. Packed with flavour, amazing presentation and extremely clever and well thought out, the Fish, Chips, peas and Curry sauce’ was exceptional ( as was the ‘cheese on toast’ snack. Genius! My husband had the wine pairing which he said was perfect, we can’t wait to go back! Amazing place 😀

Everything was perfect in Coarse for our 30th anniversary celebration. Thank you for making it so special for us. We have returned twice since, the second for our 31st anniversary. The standard was as high as the first time we came. Incredible

This menu was delicious! All of the dishes were very well cooked. An interesting twist on classic dishes like fish n chips and pina colada. The service was great if a little slow, but the meal was worth the wait. I would recommend a visit for a unique experience in Durham!

Coarse accommodated our late booking enquiry for our anniversary and made the whole evening an experience rather than the usual meal out for two. The food was ridiculously tasty and the wine pairing opened us up to new tastes.

My partner and I came here on a Thursday night and had the tasting menu which for £45 was an absolute bargain. There were some real stand out courses (the arancini in particular were great, as were the strawberries) and it was solid throughout. I’ve given the food 5 stars because although it wasn’t the best tasting menu I’ve had, you really couldn’t fault it for the price and I’d definitely come again. Compliments to the chefs who were smashing it frankly. The service was friendly and very well paced and the lady who I assume was in charge was knowledgeable about the food and very professional. I’ve marked down the atmosphere because the place although nice isn’t especially comfortable and was really loud because of the proximity of the tables and open plan. Still I’d strongly recommend this place, they’re doing a stellar job.

The meal was beautiful as always; the snack was delicious (carrot kofta) and the starter had unforgettable flavours of basil and tomato. The meal only got better with the lobster sandwich and the beef, culminating, with a finale of the Blueberry financier.

What a great restaurant, we had the lunch tasting menu and it was amazing Very good value and very clever My only complaint is that we live over 100 miles away!!!

The mark of an exceptional meal and a seriously great restaurant is when a Chef can present a menu of courses, which one might not have selected for yourself and then take you on a tasting journey that leaves you very happy and content. Tonight was by no means my first evening at Coarse, but it was the first time half of the menu were items I would normally avoid, yet such is the care, precision and sheer mastery of their trade that I knew I was in safe hands. The result was a marvelous meal, each mouthful an experience and overall another night to savour. Book in advance because this is one of the top restaurants in the north .

First experience of this type of restaurant so we were a little apprehensive. no need to worry as the staff explained everything and gave helpful advice on drinks etc, the food was exceptional and served in a timely and leisurely manner. We enjoyed 7 courses over two and a half hours and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. We will definitely return.

Really great experience tasting some fantastically prepared dishes. We opted for the six plates and came away extremely impressed. Knowledgable table staff explained each dish, whilst skilled chefs presented a variety of mouthwatering dishes. Highly recommended.

The drinks list was good and not ridiculously priced with plenty of options for low/no alcohol. The staff were very pleasant and welcoming, the service excellent.
