Brilliant food and service as always. Paired wines on the lunch menu were an excellent accompaniment.

Atmosphere spoilt by a rather noisy Scouser and Yorkie having a cross table conversation. A matter of the customer being right!

As always, it's a delight to eat at Coarse! The food is fantastic, the staff are kind and knowledgeable, and their seats are incredibly comfy. I am delighted to continue coming here because of their excellent vegetarian tasting menu - it's wonderful to have a dedicated menu for vegetarians that isn't just mushroom risotto!

We’ve been looking to come here for a while. But I was putting it off due to having a fish allergy and didn’t want to be that awkward person with an allergy on a set menu. However it wasn’t a problem at all. They just happily switched out the courses with fish for vegetarian. My gosh it was incredible. ! The food was the best I’ve had, and the service and the team were brilliant and friendly. We can’t wait to go back !

The food was excellent. The staff introduced and explained each course with clarity and an obvious pride. The pace of the meal was very good, allowing us to savour each course before the next was presented. If I were to be picky: the restaurant has a slightly Spartan feel, no tablecloths or carpets, but is comfortable. The archway and yard leading to the entrance is untidy. However, over all, we loved the experience.

This restaurant never fails to deliver top notch cuisine and excellent service . Had the taster menu and wine pairing, flavours and taste we literally scraped the dishes so not to miss a morsel , delicious. Presentation and combinations of ingredients just deliciously put together, having this menu again!

Good food. Plenty of flavours in each course. Service was very good with each course clearly explained. So relaxing, unhurried but efficient. Been several times, always a good experience.

Divine food. Started slow but just got better and better. Great service. Really enjoyable, yet sparse interior and if you do have money left over, guys, it would be well spent on some acoustic cladding. But hey, an unforgettable evening.

My husband and I went with our son and daughter in law who had previously visited. It was lovely. We did the wine pairings and also had the supplemented course. I cannot fault any of it. It was just over £100 each but, when you take into account the 6 glasses of wine it is not overly expensive. Well worth a visit for a special occasion or just if ypu love fine food and want to treat yourself

As relative newcomers to Durham, this was the first time we had been to Coarse. We were lucky enough to have been given a voucher as a Christmas present and it proved to be a wonderful gift. Every dish on the vegetarian tasting menu was delicious and we very much enjoyed the anticipation as we wondered what each one would be like. Ingredients were combined in imaginative, unexpected and sometimes witty ways, like a lovely cheese scone with a garlic and herb butter and tomato jam, or a 'tea, milk and biscuit dessert. The twice-baked souffle was superb. All the waiting staff were very welcoming and friendly and helped to create a warm, relaxing evening. We are looking forward to going back to Coarse as soon as possible.

My third visit, always a treat. Every course was something lovely, even if not a dish I would normally choose. Yes a few quid more than a standard meal out, but Coarse is not a standard meal out, for the quality and service worth every penny.

What a gem of a restaurant. I had the vegetarian tasting menu and it was absolutely lovely. Very friendly staff, relaxed atmosphere and great wine list. On a side note, the non alcoholic cocktails were really special if you are not a drinker.

Interesting food, prepared impeccably with great wine pairings - all at a good price for this standard of meal. A closer on the toilet door would help when you are sat just next to it! Thoroughly enjoyed the experience and we will be back.

Superb tasting menu, unusual combinations which worked perfectly. More small starter sized than taster sized, so plenty of food. Wine pairing was excellent. Daniel our waiter was brilliant.

This is my very favorite restaurant. The food is truly amazing, none of the courses from their set menu has ever disappointed. The atmosphere is lovely and the staff are friendly. My wife and I go every time the set menu changes. Can not recommend highly enough.

Coarse was recommended to us by a friend and it did not disappoint ! We visited on a lunchtime and had the full 6 course tasting menu plus the extra monkfish course. The creativity, balance of flavours and presentation of food was superb and we felt it was excellent value for money compared with restaurants of similar food quality. An absolute hidden gem and we will definitely be back. The atmosphere is relaxed and staff were knowledgeable about the dishes and attentive. We were there with our dad for an 80th birthday treat and he had such a memorable experience - for which we’re really grateful. Thank you

The menu here is very good. The dishes are all very well prepared and very tasty. Having had the pleasure of eating in numerous Michelin star restaurants Course comes very close with the standard of its food.

What a fabulous restaurant, breathtaking food, a warm welcome, excellent service and wonderful explanation of the different courses. Superb value for money and imaginative alternatives for a vegan diner.

We had a lovely meal which was a 6 course tasting menu, however we decided to add an extra dish at an extra cost to ensure we had enough food as dishes were small but was enough overall. The staff were very attentive and each table had their own server, they explained all the dishes/courses that we had and also catered for a dairy free member of our party. We would have preferred to have sat downstairs but there wasn't any free tables as there was a bit more atmosphere downstairs. We also had some lovely wine even though we didn't opt for the wine pairing, they also gave us all a glass of free prosecco due to be there for my birthday. Would definitely recommend and would definitely go back, overall a lovely night.

Excellent restaurant especially at the price point. Flavour combinations and balance spot on. Service relaxed but efficient. With a few tweaks it could be in the running for a star rather than just a mention in the Michelin guide.

The quality, inventiveness and standard of food is fantastic, but for me, details like the temperature of the food or the seasoning/ flavouring is sometimes off. I visit on average 5 times a year. On some visits I come away thinking wow, on others it lacks in some areas. Experienced the Christmas menu recently which was lovely but it didnt blow me away like menus I've had here in the past. A slight annoyance is portion sizes are often inconsistent between diners, this time on at least 3 of the dishes. We all pay the same, make the portions identical please! Would like to return in the new year and support what is a great addition to the Durham food scene but I must agree with what's been said about the bins outside the entrance.

Team were friendly, relaxed and knowledgeable on all courses. The food was fantastic and atmosphere was great even for a wintery Tuesday evening. Will definitely back to try new menus. Thanks everyone!

I've been twice before when the food and service were fantastic, I was really disappointed today that the flavour on the Christmas menu just wasnt there and it was all a bit average. Given it was a friend's first time I felt bad she was spending money on food that wasnt up to the usual standard

We had the 6 course tasting menu plus supplementary course - it was an absolute delight. The snacks to start with were gorgeous- especially the focaccia, the turkey stuffing was delicious, the smoked salmon was outstanding,the halibut was my absolute favourite especially the sauce, the porchetta was gorgeous and the desserts were unusual but yummy. The textures and tastes work together to produce a very special dining experience.

We don't get to go to Coarse as often as we would like, but whenever we do it never disappoints. But a word of warning: starve yourself for at least a day in advance - you will need the room. As we left, walking (I waddled) down the road in search of a taxi the cold, dark, dreary November night didn't seem so bad after all.

As usual a first class meal. It was the first week of the Christmas menu which we really enjoyed. Each course was so tasty and flavoursome. Picking a favourite is difficult but if I must then the porchetta was fab. We’ll be back.

I decided on the spur of the moment to stop over in Durham. Although by myself I felt sure I’d feel comfortable in Coarse. I had an amazing meal, the staff were friendly, knowledgeable and attentive and I felt absolutely fine as a lone diner. The different flavours and textures of the food are wonderful and inventive and I’ve never been disappointed. Just wish I lived more locally!

Lovely food and very moderately priced

Visited here for dinner last week with friends and it lived up to the hype. The tasting menu was fantastic, well balanced and exceptional value for money. It’s on par with some of the best Michelin star restaurants I’ve dined at over the years. Service was great, and the guy who was acting sommelier for the table was full of knowledge. An overall excellent experience. Will absolutely return next year.

This was our 2nd trip to Coarse. We had a the 6 course taster menu, with the extra fish course, and the wine pairing. It was first class, again! The wine accompaniment with each course was amazing, and totally made the dish. The Espresso Martini at the end of the meal (this was extra) was probably the best Espresso Martino I have ever had. We will be back in the New Year.

It is the third time that my wife and I have visited "Coarse" and it never fails to disappoint. The way they reinvent their menus to such a high standard every time we visit, is a wonderful testament to the great skills of the Chefs. Along with the wine, great service and attention to detail, from all of the staff, shows why this restaurant adds up to probably the best experience for food and drink you can have. Excellent.
