Coghlans At Barningham in County Durham

Easter Sunday lunch-a real treat. Food delicious and plenty of it.

We treated our Mum to lunch for Mother's Day. 9 of us in total. Everyone's meal was delicious. They went above and beyond to cater for a baby and a child who's a fussy eater. The Salmon Wellington was divine. We'll be visiting again.

We called into the shop on a rainy day and the shop keeper was lovely! Made us a nice hot drink to take with us on our walk due to the tea rooms being fully booked, also considered our greyhound and provided us with water. We had some pastries and they were hands down the best pastries we’ve ever had! Thank you for making our cold rainy walk so much better!

Collected the fish platter for lunch at home with a friend, amazingly tasty and have already ordered another for this week! Have had several afternoon teas in the tea room and they are always delicious.

Booked afternoon tea using a Christmas 2022 gift voucher, and wow, it was well worth the wait and finding of this place. Ist class service, will definitely be back in the summer months. Thank you so much.

We recently visited Coghlans at Barningham and had a fabulous experience. This is our 3rd visit and each time the quality of the food and the service has been first class. The setting is beautiful, the menu is varied and the food is delicious. The staff are friendly and accommodating and the attention to detail is outstanding. We also visited the shop, which has a great range of products. We bought a number of items, including cakes and Dine at Home meals, which were equally wonderful. We can't rate the establishment highly enough and will definitely be returning in 2024!

Superb food, good value for money.

We were thrilled with Andrew's delicious - and affordable -sparkling wine recommendation for our recent Drinks Party. I'm glad I also ordered Coghlan's lovely and thoughtful spread of Canapés. Such a beautiful service, and we highly recommend. We are very fortunate to have such an excellent service in the Barningham area!

We had an amazing afternoon tea today. We were warmly greeted and shown to a lovely big table with beautiful bone china cups and saucers. We requested no fish when we booked and this wasn't a problem at all. The sandwiches were delicious and the cakes and sweet treats were sublime. The tea was loose leaf served in an elegant tea pot. And the glass of fizz was lovely and crisp. The service was outstanding and we can't wait to visit again when we are next in the area. We would highly recommend.

We booked for afternoon tea to celebrate a family birthday. The whole experience was professional and the food was a delight. From the beautiful crockery and Orange Peko aperitif to an excellent range of sandwiches, tarts, scones and posset. Every part of the meal was well presented and very tasty. I would recommend this venue without hesitation and look forward to returning again.

Afternoon tea to savour. Delicious goodies with excellent, friendly service in a traditional, cosy environment. Everything freshly baked. Perfect tea, lots of variety and all done with class on fine bone china. I had made a mistake with a groupon voucher and Andrew helped me get it redeemed and allowed me to rebook, which they were not obliged to do. I was very grateful. A wonderful experience. wow, what an amazing lunch. We enjoyed leek and potato soup with the best focaccia I've ever tasted (first time in my life I've not dunked my bread!). Black bream in butter sauce with samphire and roast veg main course, again perfectly cooked. I had cherry frangipane dessert and OH had a walnut apple crumble tart- both delicious, excellent bakes, you can tell all is made on the day. Very impressive and lovely service too. Totally recommend.

We had a lovely afternoon at Coghlans, we went into the shop/ bakery first and for a small space they had some lovely items in there. We bought some lovely baked products. Then we had Afternoon tea in the tea room, the service was so lovely, so friendly and attentive. there was a good selection of sandwiches and quiche, followed by a lemon tart, blueberry possett, scones, meringues and fruit loaf. The pastry on the quice and tart was so short and perfectly cooked. We would definitley recommend anyone to go here for afternoon tea, we had an offer for 2 for 1 sparkling afternoon tea, so very good value for money

Visited as a couple last week for the classic afternoon tea as we have done on many occasions and was dissatisfied and disappointed sadly. The finger sandwiches were bland and had hardly any filling inside the only other savoury item was a small quiche. The selection of sweet treats all tasted the same and all full of cream. It would be nice to have a chocolate item of some kind which there wasn’t. The tea used to be served fresh with tea leaves but not any more. Sadly we will not return as the price keeps on rising but the quality and value for money is lacking more each time.

We visited on Friday afternoon for afternoon tea. We were welcomed into the tearoom by Andrew. The table was laid with crisp white linen and pretty crockery. All of the food items were homemade and delicious with lovely presentation. The tea was made with real tea leaves. This is the best afternoon tea we have experienced and we would highly recommend it. Make sure you book in advance as many others have also found this hidden gem. We will definitely be returning.

Went for afternoon tea. Lovely food and surroundings. Crisp white table linen and beautiful China. The afternoon tea comprised of sandwich assortment, quiche, cream meringues, fruit loaf, lemon tart, fresh cream and jam scones, a fruit mousse. All homemade. We will return!

We went for afternoon tea. What a lovely selection of savoury and sweet items, served with your choice of tea (though we started with a glass of prosecco). Nice location, lively atmosphere and they also have a small deli. At the rest rooms there are a selection of quirky hats to try on! The tables are spaced far enough apart to preserve some privacy.

How disappointed we were on Sunday. We decided to eat one of your ready meals. Teesdale Lamb hot pot, we counted 6 small pieces of lamb, lots of vegetables and gravy. I removed the slices of potato as they were black. We bought this meal two weeks ago.

Amazing teacakes visit most days whilst at work

We checked the website before every visit to check opening times and stated would be open.Travelled there three times now, both on bikes and in car. First time, closed to public for private function.Second time, it was just not openThird time, a written note on door, “ closed for annual holiday”.We passed 2 sandwich boards displaying OPEN and listing foods.There was a sandwich board on the road at the entrance drive to the shop saying OPEN!!We actively want to support local business, it’s still a half hour drive, but won’t call again. Shabby.

So we took a left turning to go to the Morritt Arms off the A66 and saw a lovely sign to a Coghlans Tearooms in Barnigham, informing us it was only two miles away. So we drove to the tearoom to be welcomed by a sign saying “open Tuesday to Saturday” May I make a couple of suggestions so potential customers don’ t waste another 15 minutes of their lives.1, take the signs in when you are closed? Always excellent, both restaurant and shop.

Amazing lunch, asparagus and tomato quiche...pastry so thin and crispy, fantastic. Chicken terrine, gloriously unctuous. Superb homemade food...top quality. Their shop is brilliant also, homemade breads, pork pies, Cornish pasties and locally sourced honey.

Fruit and veg box is excellent as are all the food I had delivered today. Thank you excellent service as well .

My mum was delighted to receive her surprise afternoon tea this week, delivered to her door, near Lartington. Beautifully presented with lots and lots of delicious, yummy food. Fruit & veg boxes are packed full of seasonal goodies. Also picked up a bag of chestnuts to roast and delicious Cornish Pasties for lunch.

The quality of the food is exceptional. The poppy bread is the best bread we have ever tasted. Would like to see a bigger range of take away cakes.

We have just finished a most delicious, three course dinner and are completely satiated. Each course exceeded our expectations. It could not be improved upon. Can not wait for next weekend to do it again!

We ordered afternoon tea for 2 to be delivered to our house. It was absolutely delicious and made for a very special birthday treat. When placing the order they were very accommodating to special requests (eg. no cheese, raspberry jam instead of strawberry). So pleased we’ve done this, many thanks.

I ordered a mix a sweet things (cakes, scones, finger sandwiches, as boxes and some extras) also some savory pasties, quiche, and mix of salads. All of it was top notch and grab and go collection was easy (although they would have delivered if I had wanted). Highly recommended anyway. Prob not the cheapest but in life you get what you pay for.

We had a surprise celebratory tea on Saturday. What can we say, except that it was superlative in all respects. A wonderful savoury and sweet mix, preceded by a welcome warming cup of soup - particularly appreciated on a dismal day.Thank you to everyone, and we look forward to our next visit.

Although we live but a short distance from Barningham, we have visted Coghlans, on more than occasion to enjoy one their superb Afternoon Teas. Our visit today, was down to the fact that we were given an Afternoon Tea voucher by friends as part of one Wedding "gifts". We chose the date as the 13th February as it marked the anniversary of our first date way back in 1964. We couldn't do owt about the weather but the ambience and the quality of what was served was spot on.

Have been numerous times now when staying with family up North. The food and service are excellent and If you want to have a really nice meal in lovely surroundings then I would highly recommend Coghlans.

Five of us came for sparkling afternoon tea to celebrate my mother-in-law’s 80th birthday. Everything was first class, from the friendly reception, the beautiful table with fine bone china, the food (including warming soup to start!) ..... Nothing was too much trouble, and every morsel of food (including the bread for the sandwiches) was made on the premises. All the food was so fresh, clearly not prepared hours before our arrival. A really enjoyable celebration.

A gem in the Dales. From the moment, we arrived, we received a very friendly welcome from the staff. Their attention to detail was impressive. The sparkling afternoon tea was simply delicious and served in beautiful china. The environment is refined yet relaxed thanks to the professionalism of the staff. We decided to try Coghlans for an evening meal, I’ve got to say it was an excellent experience from beginning to end. The food was superb not fussy or pretentious just spot on! We had four courses a couple of glasses of prosseco and a bottle of wine for £85 so also superb value! We were the first customers to arrive and were made to feel very welcome by the staff, the meal was well paced never feeling rushed or to slow despite a large party and several other bookings arriving after us. We will be back to sample the afternoon tea in the near future. Excellent.

My husband and I called at Coghlans en-route to Edinburgh. I bought a deal on Groupon for Afternoon Tea for two with Prosecco, my husband had Prosecco, I had sparkling elderflower. I don't drink alcohol so my favourite pastime is having afternoon tea and have visited many establishments over time across Yorkshire mainly. My long-standing favourite was in Helmsley but it was knocked off the top spot by Coghlans. We are heading north again soon and will be calling again.

Our daughter had booked afternoon tea with a glass of prosecco for us as a Christmas gift. We had such a lovely experience and hope to go again soon ! The soup, sandwiches, quiche, scones, cakes and a proper cup of tea could not be faulted...delicious ! The young lady serving us was professional and pleasant. The icing on the cake was when we learned Coughlans was dog friendly and we cant wait to introduce out Airedales who both work as Therapy dogs to this lovely place !

Lovely lunch and excellent service

Took time during a long weekend in the Richmond area, and dropped in for afternoon tea. Useing a birthday voucher we were very presently surprised by the quality of the service and the premises at Coghlans. The afternoon tea was of a very high quality. On the occasion of our afternoon tea the restaurant was empty apart from us, therefore the overall atmosphere was a little underwhelming.
