Thomas Wright House in County Durham

Disappointed in my stay here..bed was very uncomfortable and pillows.bathroom too small with shower screen always in way..uht milk?? Bedroom was not cleaned and tidied for our second night.ended up in hospital because of room not cleaned..carpets upto bedroom were thilthy.breakfast I had the tiniest of boiled egg that was hard and not runny.. continental breakfast was very poor.did not sleep as the bedroom doors really bang when people go in and out..very sad experience.contacted to tell them my problems no reply so hence my review.

Wonderful celebrations for my daughter’s 60th Sunday lunch. The food was absolutely delicious and the staff go above and beyond to provide an excellent service. We would never ever go anywhere else for our Sunday lunch it never disappoints

Stunning food and a fantastic beer garden, staff are very friendly and attentive.

We stayed in the car park in our motorhome the staff were excellent with us we were there for a birthday party and it was excellent the food was soo good and staff so friendly even allowed me to take my puppy in . Would recommend . Thank you .

We had the most amazing experience when we booked here for a family meal out. We have eaten at some very prestigeous establishments over the years and we were totally amazed at the level of personal service, attention to detail and incredible food that we all received. I cannot recommend this place highly enough.All of the staff were amazing and literally couldnt do enough for us to ensure that we had a fantastic night. Ester the owner is an amazing host and Sky in particular looked after our every need. We will be back as often as we can. Thanks guys Shaun and Julia x

Thomas Wright House has got to be one of the best places myself, partner and two Lurchers have stayed. We were all welcomed at the door by Esther who immediately made us feel welcome. We were shown through to the garden which has picnic benches and a cracking view of the hills. Upon arrival we were served drinks by Clark in the garden, even our dogs got their own water bowl. Our room was absolutely spotless, couldn't fault it. As we were in a dog friendly room, there were a few lovely surprises for our dogs....I'll not spoil that one incase your stay. We all went for our evening meal to the restaurant, which again, was spotless and beautifully laid out. No sooner had we sat down, Skye had come out with two blankets for our dogs to lie on and a water bowl. I have Celiac and was worried about the menu. No need....plenty gluten free options. I genuinely can't fault Thomas Wright House. If you're looking for a friendly, spotless, welcoming dog friendly place to stay, this has to be the place to go. Would definitely recommend, great atmosphere great staff, wonderful day

We went for dinner last week as we were staying at one of the cottages nearby and had the most wonderful meal. The food was lovely and beautifully presented. We both had potato skins and fillet steak. Cooked to perfection. We also had breakfast there that day which was also lovely. Very reasonably priced and the service was faultless. We are already planning our next getaway to the area so we can return. There is a lovely beer garden to with great views which is lovely for a relaxing drink to.

Staff were all exceptional, breakfast was delicious with plenty of choice.

The hotel is located in the small village of Byers Green. . The hotel as a whole is renovated and well, the rooms are located above the pub of the building. The pub is the only one in the area and therefore crowded especially on weekends, so take into account the comings and goings and the noise , we witnessed two arguments and we also caught a village party, but with earplugs it resolves itself. The room is well furnished and functional, one of the best I have encountered so far. The dinner had a fast food menu related to the party that had moved to the venue, but very good. The typical English breakfast was plentiful and very good. The hotel includes the pub, rooms for breakfast/lunch, and an outside area where you can relax, have a drink and enjoy the music, very nice on sunny days. The friendly and helpful staff.

We stayed for one night and will definitely visit again. The staff were all friendly and helpful. The standard of the accommodation and restaurant was great, the food was delicious, of a very high standard and good value. We ate a late lunch and also breakfast too, we couldn’t fault either.

Had the BEST Sunday lunch at Thomas Wright House. It was lovely and tasty, hot, with a very good selection of fresh vegetables brought to the table which were cooked to perfection. Sticky toffee pudding and chocate tart were just gorgeous! Lovely coffee too! Staff really lovely, nothing was much trouble. Lovely restaurant with plenty of room between tables so you're not sat on top of one another. Even an after dinner mint when we paid the bill!

Beautiful hidden gem. We were Greeted at the door on arrival and looked after throughout our stay, all staff were amazing. We stayed in the Aquila room and wow it was incredible… absolutely spotless, the sauna and hot tub made it feel even more luxurious. We were only originally meant to stay for 1 night but found out the room was available for the next day so extended our stay as we didn’t want to leave! Breakfast was hands down the best one i have ever had. We had an evening meal in the restaurant, food was beautiful and fairly priced. Big comfortable bed, large fluffy towels and use of bath robes/slippers. We even had been left a lovely bottle of Prosecco in the fridge. We will most definitely be back very soon :)

Went to the Thomas Wright house for breakfast going off the trip advisor reviews and I couldn’t agree more with the hundreds of other reviews. The food was amazing, plenty of toast offered too. Service was so friendly and welcoming and the young lady whose establishment it is has a wonderful personality that just puts the icing on the cake. Couldn’t speak highly enough of the place. Thank you for the wonderful experience.

We had our wedding here and had the the most wonderful day with fantastic service from Ester and her super team. The wedding room was lovely and our wedding breakfast was superb. All the accommodation rooms are fantastic and great value. We used the restaurant the evening before and all the food was lovely and the service excellent. I strongly recommend this venue

One of the warmest & friendliest places we have stayed at. The customer service was superb. The food was delicious The rooms were warm, relaxing , clean and great attention to detail with lovely silk petals scattered on the bed. But what really makes Thomas Wright House special is the team. Claire who showed us to our rooms. Skye, Ethan, Clarke and Claire who looked after us at evening meal and breakfast. 10/10. We can’t wait to go back.

Welcomed on arrival. Rooms are lovely. Exceptionally clean and warm. Beds are very comfortable. Plenty of pillows and lovely soft bedlinen. Duvets aren’t too thick, it was warm!!!Bottle of water and glasses by the bed was a nice touch. Water pressure in the shower is spot on with plenty of hot water. Nice quality toiletries provided in the shower. Plenty of tea bags and coffee to help yourself to if you happen to run out. Hotel was quiet despite being busy. Breakfast is superb with lots of choices. They will happily provide any combination of what’s on offer. We had an excellent evening meal on the first night…,beware the portions are huge. Couldn’t manage 3 courses !! The food is well presented as well as delicious. Plenty of proper fresh vegetables. The mussels were as good as any I’ve eaten in France. Restaurant is nicely spaced too. Staff are warm and welcoming. It really was a lovely place to stay. Will definitely recommend to others!!

Just had Sunday lunch for my mother’s 86 Birthday. The lady who runs this establishment is just first rate. She had put a banner up and went to the trouble of buying in special requests. Please visit this restaurant. I’m from the midlands and I can honestly say this set up is worth every penny. Food great but the customer care was just amazing. More restaurants would benefit from this lady’s attention to detail ! Thank you all so much.

Stopped overnight at this lovely Hotel on our way up to Seahouses. What a gem, we'd booked Sunday lunch which was one of the best I've ever tasted. The rooms were spacious & had everything you needed really lovely. The owner Esther and her son couldn't do enough for us they were so friendly. Will definitely come back if we are up this way again.

Great venue so close to home and despite living here for best part of thirty years never tried before Saturday night ! Spent a night at Thomas Wright House last night and have to say it was just excellent. All the staff were amazing, friendly, so helpful and just brilliant, they even treat our dogs so well, always a bowl of water and fluffy blanket ready for them. . The room we had was immaculately clean and perfect. We had a meal last night and it was probably the best my husband and I have ever had, breakfast was just the same, delicious Can’t wait to go back and thanks for looking after us so well Five stars all the way, fabulous

We arrived here for Sunday lunch with family a bit hectic at first!!! It was recommended to us! a large party were out the back so service was a bit stilted. BUT then a lovely lady appeared and made everything OK very friendly and funny (she saved the day really...).the food was absolutely delicious and well worth the money! Dessert was fabulous too... thank you to the chef. we met 3 members of staff and all were friendly even the ladies son. Totally recommend.

We spent 3 nights here whilst visiting family in the local area and were very impressed. The staff were very friendly and helpful, the accommodation was immaculate and the restaurant was of a very good standard. The premises are on a bus route so exploring the local are is easily accessible. Compliments to Esther and all at the Thomas Wright House. Highly recommend this place if you’re in the area.

I last visited Thomas Wright House in Byers Green over thirty years ago. It was, if I'm not mistaken, known then as The Marquis of Granby from where I retain fond memories. I was recalled today a for three family gathering to celebrate a birthday. From reception through to the welcoming garden for pre lunch drinks, I knew this was going to be a good gathering. And so it proved with attentive and welcoming staff tending to our myriad drinks orders - there was thirty of us. We each had a variety of beef, lamb and chicken lunches with smaller plates for children and toddlers catered for: and all delivered with smiles and genuine pride in service. With affordable drinks from a well stocked bar we could not have wished for a more relaxed and enjoyable occasion. Highly recommended. Marks out of 10... eleven. Phil Graham

There are not enough stars to say how wonderful this place is! We were just looking for a one night stopover but have found an absolute gem and will definitely come back The rooms, all individual, are clean and comfortable One even has a hot tub. They have names of stars or solar systems, named after Thomas Wright. They have lots of really lovely little touches . Loads of coffee, tea etc and even a nice little area to sit in if you don’t want to sit in your room. Loved the garden and garden room . The restaurant was not open when we stayed but the staff were able to recommend nearby eateries and takeaways . We decided on a takeaway and the hotel provides plates, cutlery etc so that you can eat in the garden. How wonderful is this! The staff are excellent . Nothings too much trouble. HIGHLY Recommended
