Coach House Cafe in Croydon

The website for this place is completely misleading. There are no wines or beers. It is just a cafe with average food and drinks and the toilet (just one) is outside so not even an inside toilet. The website has to be changed. It is completely false advertising. In these days where people are suffering from the cost of living crisis and save up to go out once every few months - it is unacceptable to give a false view of the menu and drinks.

We went to the coach house for a family lunch and had a great time. I had the fairly new special, beef lasagna with salad and it was absolutely delicious, a good helping with plenty of meat and cheese on top. My husband had fish and chips and son the cheeseburger. Both really good, I didn't have room for dessert which was a shame as their selection of cakes and ice cream is superb. Staff were as usual friendly and attentive. You need to try this cafe for yourselves, you won't be disappointed.

This is one of the best local cafes for a relaxed vibe (it feels like the countryside!), good, friendly customer service, healthy slices of gluten free cake and soya hot choclate.

I met friends for coffee at the Coach House. No problems with the coffee/tea or service. But the toilet facilities were terrible. The ladies' toilet was locked with a padlock. One of the kitchen staff said we needed to use the one toilet marked "Disabled". It was smelly, very run down and there was no toilet paper. Later the ladies' toilet was unlocked but it too was in a very bad state of repair. Again there was no toilet paper. The mirror was so old it was discoloured and unusable. i will not return because of the state of the toilets.

It is a very good cafe' with indoor and outdoor sitting with good selection of food, snacks, sandwiches, ice creams and drinks.

Our son treated us to lunch at the Coach House cafe today. He had the double cheeseburger, new to the menu, my husband had fish and chips and I had the chicken Mexican burger with salsa and smashed avocado, also new to the menu. It was delicious, came with really hot golden chips, onion rings and a nice salad,definitely would recommend. My son just about got through the burger, great he mumbled through a mouthful!!! The fish and chips were very nice, a large helping. Service was as usual very good and though busy didn't have to wait too long. Thanks to all staff, Valerie

Visited with my son and elderly mother for lunch. We were shown our table and left for 30 minutes without waiting staff engaging with us at all. When, after 30 minutes, I went to find a member of staff to tell them we were leaving, I was told by a grinning waitress that we should have ordered at the counter. When I pointed out that it would have been better to have told us this important piece of information when we arrived, she just smiled and said sorry. Very poor customer service.

Beautiful setting for breakfast with the surrounding gardens. I was served my coffee and breakfast by a friendly and polite waiter. The omelette was delicious and kept me full for the rest of the day. If you are in the area, I would highly recommend visiting.

Both my husband and I really enjoyed our valentines day lunch here today. I had a new dish, a very tasty chicken tajeen with lots of really tender chicken, tasty olives and potatoes in a delicious sauce. Keith had the fish and chips which was equally delicious with a large fish and lovely fresh chips. The staff were helpful, polite and calm even though very busy. Service ok, wife and family friend had chicken burger; I had House Burger. Food arrived, my burger was just ground meat formed into patty shape. Outside of burger cooked to medium, inside ‘raw’. Dreadful, chef should know better, won’t return for another meal and would not recommend.

We decided to have lunch on the spur of the moment. What a good decision, we both had fish and chips, good choice, best we've had for a long time. Lovely piece of haddock, crispy light chips with salad and peas. Struggled to finish it! Would recommend. Valerie

Their website says it is licensed but sadly it is not. Their website also says they cater for vegans but sadly they do not know what plant based meals are. This was very disappointing as I have been visiting Coombe Gardens for over 60 years and over the years it has been lovely despite many changes in management/ownership. I have been to several small celebration parties in the last few years and always enjoyed a nice bottle of wine…. Sadly this is no longer possible due to lack of alcohol license. They need to change their website …. ASAP!

We met friends here for Sunday breakfast. Good light meal menu with range of vegetarian options and usual selection of hot drinks. Prompt and friendly service, even though they were busy. Food excellent. Seating inside and outside in large back courtyard. Would very happily come here again

Nice place just off the main road. You can walk round the gardens or wood then have coffee or lunch or dinner. Real wood fire during the winter. Breakfast is good, other meals I feel the portions can be a bit on the small side. Very busy at weekends, many tables are reserved which is a pain. During the week much quieter but I still recommend you reserve a table if you are having a meal. Staffing has been a problem in the kitchen recently. Coffee is lovely especially the lattes but still no skimmed milk otherwise it would have been a 5* review.

Ordered jacket potato with chilli, cheese and coleslaw. Cheese and coleslaw missing, but returned and replaced within 5 minutes. Cafe was short staffed and ordering seemed quite stressy. Grounds are absolutely beautiful, so can overlook the food issues as the setting totally made up for it.

One of the staff named Lewis was starring at my 13 year old daughters bottom as we went into the cafe to order our food I will never be visiting here again after that disgusting young man did that.

A smallish cafe with a lovely walled garden. Very friendly and independanly run. Reasonably varied menu with the food always cooked fresh and tastes good. Probably best to book a table to avoid disappointment.

Fourteen of us plus a baby had lunch on a Saturday without needing to book. Staff friendly, service good and the food was great. I have known this place for over sixty years and this was one of my best ever visits here.

I’ve reviewed this cafe before and recommended it to my friends on many occasions. It was efficient and friendly and a real breath of fresh air. Gary is a great host with a friendly team and the added bonus of a beautiful garden to walk around after eating the special piece of cake is great!

Have often visited for coffee and a snack. These are always good and though I have not had a meal here the food looks good! The walled area is warm and protected in good weather and the gardens are beautiful in spring and summer, kept so by the Croydon Parks Department. The woodland area is good for wandering through especially when it is very hot.

I was recommended this cafe and thought it might be a place I could take my elderly father who has hearing problems. I arrived some half an hour before my father. I was glad I did. I chose a table near the door. I was forced to move as the rain which at the time was heavy started to leak on to me. There was no prior notice saying this might be a problem. But after moving a “reserved” sign was put in the table. I then became aware of how loud the music was once further into the café. My thoughts soon came to the realisation that this was the worst place I could bring my father. I then witnessed two plates of food being sent back to the kitchen because of poor quality. At this point the Coach House cafe was a very poor choice. When I paid the staff member wanted to know why I was leaving having set up a tab. I replied that what with the leaking roof and music to drown conversation this was an unfriendly and intimidating place to subject my father to and having seen food sent back I was not putting myself or my father at risk.

My husband and I like to explore the realm of culinary pleasures, and find hidden gems in the Croydon/Surrey area. That’s how we got to the Coach House Café in Coombe Road, South Croydon.

As the title says, this cafe open from breakfast onwards has a beautiful location just off coombe road. Ample free parking available and then it's just a few steps through the very beautiful, formal gardens to take you into the cafe. When the weather is nice as well as indoor seating there is also a lovely, relaxing cobbled, walled courtyard to sit in. Food and service is average but nothing more - but it is the stunning garden location that gives this place its advantage and will ensure I return.

Have visited coach house cafe on several occasions for either breakfast or lunch. The food and service are always excellent, with generous portions and very well priced. Reservations can be made & would recommend this if you visiting in “peak” times.

A beautifully maintained garden and a lovely walk can be started or ended at the gem of a place. When busy is a bit chaotic but if you are happy to wait and enjoy the atmosphere then visit this place

Lovely cozy cafe,with a warm,friendly family feeling. We arrived there quite late,on an icey February day,but will defInately be back to visit the gorgeous gardens in the grounds where the cafe sits.

Visited this morning and was very impressed with the food. All home cooked and you can really tell! The burger and the lasagne were both delicious and so were the cakes! They even gave us a free cake as an apology for waiting slightly longer for one of our meals. It was very cosy inside with the log fire, perfect on a winter morning. Only down side was the tables are close together which meant a tight squeeze for the pram but we managed. Will be visiting again :)

I have visited often and think this is a lovely spot for tea and cake. There’s a little fire inside which is great for warming up on a cold day and the small garden out the back is great for summer. The place has a low key, family feel about it. It’s not flashy food or surroundings but very quaint and a nice place to stop off after exploring the gardens of Coombe Wood.

We had a lovely Sunday morning walk around the woods next to the cafe when the children asked for lunch so we thought to try the Coach House. We were met by a extremely friendly waitress who showed us to our table. As the weather was good we had a very nice table in the back garden. Food was delicious and this little hideaway is certainly worth a try... we will definitely be back!

Was met with an abrupt and rude staff member when simply asking politely about the lunch menu. Left and went elsewhere. Some people should steer well clear of the hospitality business.

I had wanted to go here for years as I had heard good reports but I was disappointed and wouldn’t go back. The setting is lovely, but the place is filthy. I had to ask for a cloth to wipe the table as it hadn’t been cleaned from the people before. Other tables inside hadn’t been cleared or wiped. The tray that our drinks came on was dirty too. The whole place needs a deep clean. The chairs and tables were dirty. The window sills were covered in dead flies and windows covered in cobwebs.

We have been using Coach house for a number of years with differing owners, present owners seem to have been here a few years and made some good changes. Reading reviews issue seems shortage of staff which they are advertising for, a group of us went in this afternoon and were asked to leave the main open area at the back as the staff wanted to clear up and close this was latest 4.45 and opening time until 5pm we were offered a place outside. Additional to this strong smell of cleaning materials in main resturant not sure what has gone wrong but owners need to get a grip and back to normal good standards

Lovely little place to have coffee and cake. My friend is g/f and had a lovely cherry cake which she was very happy with. Downside there was nowhere clean to change my baby and the toilets where very dirty, which let the experience down. Staff very friendly and beautiful gardens to walk around. Would definitely recommend.

Friendly welcome from overworked lady who was short staffed. Lovely sun trap in the courtyard but strong kitchen smells inside. Wide menu but main menu items a bit pricey. Potatoes and sandwiches fine. Slow service explained by short staffing. Overall fine for food.

The setting is very nice. We sat outside as the music made the inside area quite noisy and the courtyard area is very sheltered and pretty. As it was threatening to rain the lady taking orders was quite sternly telling customers that, basically, they couldn't expect to come inside if it did rain as she had lots of tables booked. This was fair enough but was a little brusquely expressed and when we left there were still lots of free tables inside.

I feel compelled to write a review about the Coach House as the service today has put me off returning

We'd been here before shortly after the current owners took over and there was a long (unexplained) wait for food which was wrong when it arrived. We also thought that having the till/order point in the narrow gap where food was being brought out of the kitchen and was also the only through access to the garden was poor planning. However we put it down to teething problems.

Just returned from a lovely family lunch in the courtyard of the Coach House. They found space for all ten of us and we were served promptly and efficiently. The food was something special - my summer green salad was delicious and the seafood salad was amazing. We weren’t rushed and sat for hours. Can’t believe the negative reviews - I would highly recommend.

Went to Coombe Gardens and their Coach House Cafe. Managed to get a disabled bay outside. Cafe is badly run. 45 minute wait for our lunch. List of specials taken off after we had ordered just after 1 pm. Kitchen closed at 1.40 pm.! Apparently, they were not expecting so many people. I went into the kitchen and the young yobbo chef yelled at me to get out in a very threatening aggressive tone . So I asked when we were likely to get served and the chef said that all the food is cooked from fresh and did we think it was all microwaved? I insisted that I wanted an answer on when our food would be ready and I was told to get out again, so I asked for a refund. A polite staff member came to our table to apologise so we indicated that we would wait. We waited more time, and another staff member announced that the chef was refusing to serve us, and we were refunded our money. Lots of people had problems today - it's not the way to treat customers, especially when payment for food is required in advance.

Visited 5th May with 2 young children. Deliberately went quite early as it was a lovely day and wanted to make sure kids fed before it became busy. Ordered 2 rounds of sandwiches and kids burger at 1245 and was told wait was up to 30 mins which was fine (although it was not that busy). Chased up food after 40 mind to be told the order had been lost by kitchen. Asked how quick it could be done as it was only 2 rounds of sandwiches and a kids burger to be told the order would go back in queue! Awful customer service and so got full refund but left with 2 hungry kids. Have eaten here a few times and food good although a little pricey, but after this never again!

Went there last year went to order food at 3.30 pm & was told kitchen shuts at 3 yet the menus said closes at 4pm.So we went today I was in the que to order food at 2.45pm didn't get seen until 3.02 & was told we are closed so they lost a £40 order from us they couldn't run a P--- up in a brewery the place was busy it's not rocket science to stay open longer on a busy hot day.Not enough staff either. Absolutely disgusted must be costing them £1000s in lost revenue each year.

Staff were friendly and it's a lovely looking cafe but let down by the Ploughmans. I've never seen such a disappointing plate of food. And for £12.95!! Husband was gutted. Did complain to waitress but technically it had the components advertised...but such poor quality pork...

This cafe is in a beautiful small park with lots of flower however its main selling point is its friendly and helpful staff. Together the atmosphere in the cafe is relaxed with lots of seating both inside and out and good value drinks and tasty food. Would definitely recommend a visit if you are in the area.

I love this little hideaway cafe. It is set in beautiful woodland and floral surroundings. The food is good and there is a large, varied menus with lots of specials. It is warm and inviting. I visit frequently.

We popped in here after what looked like a very busy Sunday lunch so I won't comment on the service / staff, they must have been tired. My review is based on the cafe itself and the horrendous coffee (we only had a slice of cake, no meals). I ordered an Americano as I honestly thought a flat white would not even be a possibility. It was just awful. I've had better instant coffee. Either they need a new machine, the current one cleaned, better beans, someone who's barista trained or I'm really not sure. The cakes were nice but dry. The outside seating was lovely but a bit of a mess - the cleaning products, mop, bucket etc are all just piled up on the side. In addition the park toilets are vile but I think these are managed by Coombe Gardens rather than the cafe. I will not be going back nor recommending.

El Coach House está en un encantador bosque con una rocalla que conduce a un estanque. Hay camas de flores de temporada durante todo el año, que se suma a la belleza del lugar. La cafetería sirve muy buena comida por un personal amable.

Ya he mencionado el café como parte de mi examen de Coombe Wood, pero no hace daño a mencionar de nuevo, teniendo en cuenta lo bien las tartas eran. Yo particularmente recomiendo la esponja (negra? bannoffee Mi esposa), mientras disfrutamos de su crema de frambuesa y elderflower. Fueron regados con más que decente de chocolate caliente.

I went to this wonderfully situated cafe with my girlfriend.When we went in we were horrified to see the mess of the previous customers all over the tables with no one clearing it we move it to another unoccupied table.We then queued for 20 minuets to be told the kitchen was closed at 3 pm even though on the website it said 5pm.The staff were rude and uncaring and I felt like they just wanted to go home.If the restaurant was this unclean I dread to think what the hygiene in the kitchen is like!Avoid at all cost.

A lovely little cafe in a a nice setting but thats where the good times stop. I went here on a good friday.. But this friday was far from good!Upon entering this cafe I was met with no welcome and many dirty sticky tables with the dirty plates from previous customers still festering on top of the tables. No staff seemed to be clearing them and just after we sat down at 3pm my family was told there was no hot food as the kitchen was shut. The displayed opening times were 9-5 it was 3 pm.I was very disappointed with they way i was treated and i will not be returning.

Visited for Mother's Day, very busy. Staff were fantastic could not fault them especially one lady whos name we didn't get. The food however was a different matter. We had a roast dinner each, the beef was difficult to cut veg was very under cooked all meals came with the accompanying sauces but already on the plate meaning if you didn't like cranberry, horseradish or apple sauce it ruined the meal. A simple thing like asking or putting them in dishes would make a huge difference.

The friend I was with had been to the Coach House Café before but it was my first visit. As we approached, I was immediately impressed with the ambience of the surrounding gardens, and the approach to the café entrance. Looked very much in character with the surroundings. It wasn't that busy, but I could see there was plenty of room to sit, both inside, out front and out back. The cakes looked especially scrummy and we were immediately served by a very affable lady. Two pots of tea, a slice of bakewell tart and one of apple and blackcurrant, we made our way to a nearby table. The cake was excellent, and the tea served in smart and modern china.Prices were average. We left replenished. The only downside was the poor state of the gentlemen's toilet which is situated at the entrance to the café courtyard. I am guessing this is a Croydon Council issue and nothing to do with the Coach House.All in all, a great place for a snack and drink.

This is one of my favourite places to eat, the staff are welcoming and the food is breathtaking.Dropped in today for a lunch, and boy was I glad I did!Sunday roast, with a choice of Beef, Lamb or Chicken--or if you prefer, a combination of your choice.Just look at the meal that turned up! We went there for lunch and both had the 'Full English Breakfast' which have to say was very good and came with bread and butter. My only criticism is it used to be a lot bigger a while ago when it was a, 'Big Boy Breakfast' and seems to have shrunk over time. The service was good and the staff great and was doing a brisk trade over lunchtime. We had coffee's and chocolate brownie's to follow which were very appetising, will certainly come back.

Pleasant enough and convenient and set in charming gardens, but the wooden tables were sticky and the food, while inexpensive, was unmemorable. Lots of yummy mummies sat with raucous children , both parties whiling away their time. Lots of lunch specials were unavailable and there was an advertisement for a chef posted on the door. There was a vaguely unsavoury feeling in here-as if everything needed a really good scrub, but I can't complain about the friendliness of the staff and the low cost of the food. Perhaps a new chef might revitalise the place.

I used to love this place, and went regularly after doing my parkrun in Lloyd Park nearby. Went back today but won't bother any more. Staff were surly and uninterested in even saying Hi. Breakfast was pretty rubbish to be honest. Bread laden with thick margarine. Why no butter? Cold plates. Small portions. Ketchup in those tiny little plastic sachets, my pet hate. Not awful awful, but definitely not good. Its a great location but just needs to make a bit more effort.

We popped to the Coach House Cafe when we visited Coombe Wood. It was busy that day but it was lovely weather so no surprise there. The food and drink was good though as was the service so I'd recommend popping in when you visit!

We went here with friends as part of a birthday weekend celebration. It is at a popular visitor location in Croydon, and although reasonably spacious, it can get busy. However, you can book a table, which is advisable if there will be a large number in your party. We had done so, and the table was ready for us when we arrived.There is a wide selection of food, suitable for snacking and treats (lovely cakes and ice cream) as well as more substantial meals, like we were planning. I think there is something for every taste on the cafe's menu, and there is a children's menu too (in fact, the cafe says it would provide a smaller portion of many of the meals on the main menu so they are more suitable for children). The cafe also promises to provide information on ingredients which may trigger allergic reactions or food intolerances, and cater for people with allergies and intolerances if possible.My food, fish and chips, was very nice and of a sizeable portion. All other meals I saw seemed to go down well with our party, and were generously portioned too.I would be tempted to give a 4 or 5-star review of this cafe but for the fact that one of the meals had a sizeable lot of human hair across it when served (across an egg yolk too, which should easily have been spotted). The mother of the child whose meal it was had already read a review on Trip Advisor in which somebody else had complained about the same thing at that cafe. It makes me wonder whether there's a hygiene problem in the kitchen (are hairnets used?), and made me wonder about my own meal.That's a shame, as it's an easy thing to sort out, but clearly has happened more than once, and the cafe would otherwise be very good.

We booked our table for 4 for lunch as this place can get really busy. We wanted to chat but it was noticeable how noisy is this restaurant. There were lots of young children and babies with their mums and noise levels were understandably high. We ordered at the counter and the food was quite prompt in coming. Ham, eggs and chips looked great but my cod and chips was very lacklustre, with the cod being small and overdone. Coffees were good but I had to ask for a latte to be topped up as it was well short of being full. None of the issues were terrible but it was disappointing to have no one come to clear our plates from the table. After 25 minutes I cleared our plates myself. This is a shame as it has been better in the past. Maybe an off day.

Very nice location in the gardens. Shane that it was starting to rain as we arrived so couldn't sit outside. Jacket potato with cheese and beans was £6+. Then added coleslaw for £1.50 which was described as a generous portion but was more a tablespoon full. Food was tasty though.Had cake to follow which again was tasty but quite expensive. £3 per slice. £24 for lunch for two. Not unreasonable but better value available.

Visited here yesterday to celebrate a friends 70th birthday, very disappointed, she had booked a table, it had reserved on it, but people were sitting on it, luckily found another table, went to order, no jacket potatoes left, no prawns so asked for tuna, no tuna! Asked for sandwich with brown bread, guess what! Didn't have any brown ok will have white, when this came it was stale so was sent back, to be told they hadn't had a delivery for 3 days, settled for a panini, asked for serviette to be told they didn't have any, was offered toilet paper instead! Needless to say we won't be eating there again, despite previously having good meals, shame as the surrounding gardens are lovely and peaceful.Pop

I was shocked how bad it has gotten here when I visited on the 16th of August. I was last here a year ago and it was pretty rubbish service, uninspiring menu, over priced food and dirty tables etc but nothing prepared me for this. I mean, where the heck had we landed? This isn't the gorgeous Coombe I've grown up visiting and persistantly try to bring my daughter to albeit with trepidation at what we might find. Did we just land on a cheap set of a Quentin Tarantino film!? Why are the walls smeared blood red and the Manga style art work on the walls!? The uncomfortable Thai furniture is better suited to Anna's down in the restaurant quarter but seriously? How on earth has this got anything to do with the stunning surroundings!?Don't get me started on staff. Three women -I'm guessing three generations of the same family- stood behind the counter with curled lip grimaces looking anything but the friendly welcome one would expect in such delightful surroundings. The icing on the cake? NO COFFEE OR TEA!!!! Having worked for years in gastronomy at home and abroad, I am well versed in the mishaps and disasters that can befall a kitchen cafe etc but how it is managed is key. One word for this lot: CLUELESS. Get a starbucks take away and a picnic blanket. There should be police tape around the cafe warning unwitting clietelle and a sign saying 'MOVE ON, NOTHING TO SEE HERE'.Please God let someone sympathetic to Coombe its history and beauty take the Coach House on. We want it back!!!
