Welcoming, relaxed atmosphere, open fire, quiet, easy to listen to background music Excellent meal, can highly recommend the duck in cherry sauce with roasted beetroot, chips and plenty of seasonal vegetables. Convenient from Stanshope, recommended by locals.

We came as a family for dinner when staying at Ashbourne. We started being the only ones in our part of the restaurant on a Monday esrly evening, but it was full by the time we left. The food was really wonderful, I had the salmon which was great , but everyone was happy. It took a while to come out as they clearly cook everything fresh and were busy, but well worth the wait.

Riding my motorcycle to Donnington, lost my way to the track because of my phone developed a supply fault, called in to charge my phone up and was charged 5 pounds for a glass of coke.

Lovely traditional country pub. Great menu choices. Food was freshly cooked with excellent presentation. I had sea bass which was delicious and my husband had the lamb burger which he also enjoyed. We would definitely recommend. Wish it was our local!

Food excellent, we had steak and kidney pie, sea bass and the duck. All cooked to perfection. The pie was probably the biggest we had ever seen.

We ate dinner here as a couple on a Saturday night in October. The car park was fairly full but there is a lot of space in the restaurant bar area, so we had no problem finding a table, but do book ahead. Warm and welcoming log fire with a specials board above it to supplement the regular menu. We ate a burger from the normal menu and a lamb casserole from the specials board, both were excellent. After our meals were delivered (within 20 minutes of ordering) two members of staff came to check on us. So no complaints on service but as we are both watching our weight I cannot comment on the desserts! Two draft local beers were on tap - one from Marstons and one from Falstaff in Derby.

Great customer service and the food was lovely - would recommend choosing some of the specials they were very nice!

Not having been for a while we ended up visiting three times within a matter of weeks, the first two occasions with family and friends and then in a party of a dozen or so relative strangers. The good thing about the C&H is that it's very reliable. There's always plenty of choice and the already extensive menu is augmented by a frequently-changing specials' board. Focusing on the group meal it was impressive to see such a diverse range of meals brought out at once, to the same high standard, as none of the food had been preordered. Service was excellent - polite, courteous, helpful and timely. I think that's all to be said!

We came here for Sunday dinner, as it was the closest pub to our campsite, and I’m really glad we did! The pub is lovely and the staff are very friendly and attentive. The menu was great, as were the specials, but I was most impressed by the children’s meal selection. My son had a gammon and my daughter had chicken nuggets, but there was a really fab choice available. I had the beef topside which, along with the selection of vegetables, was cooked to perfection. The food was bought out really quickly too. I’m very impressed and am tempted to travel 1 1/2 hours to come back once I’m home 😂. Fantastic! (Although dogs aren’t allowed inside, for those for whom that matters)

We couldn't find anything open on a Sunday night for food and then we found the coach and horses. What a find. Food was great ( I'm not vegetarian but chose the black bean and lentil burger and it was perfect ). All five of us really enjoyed our meals and a decent price. Staff all very friendly and a nice atmosphere ... Well worth a visit.

We arrived to a reserved table that had been nicely dressed for us. Food, service, everything was impeccable. We are always very grateful when places go the extra mile for people with coeliac disease who need a strict gluten-free diet. This place did and deserve praise. A very enjoyable evening, thank you.

British cooking at its best one had soup of day to start, I had field mushrooms in a stilton and cranberry crust. Mains the lamb very tasty Chicken Balti very good and the duck wonderful all of them. Really didn't have room for the deserts which wish I did have as they looked great.

Visited with friends. The cheesy garlic mushrooms were amazing - we all loved them. Hubby loved his pie & I enjoyed the veg chilli with halloumi. Kids meals were good quality & size. Crème brûlée was soooo creamy with a great ‘crack’ Good friendly service with food served quickly but not rushed.

Went for a meal with my wife as part of wedding anniversary trip to Derbyshire. Staff/owners were really friendly. Excellent beer. Fantastic food - my wife had one of the best steaks she has ever had and I had a steak and kidney pie special which was the best I've had. Creme brulle and cheese and biscuits for dessert, both superb. Excellent value for money, cannot recommend highly enough.

Cosy 17th century inn serving fabulous traditional food. The original inn is delightful with low ceilings and exposed beams; the newer part is less so, but the decor is aimed at tying it in. The air of the place is more old fashioned than traditional, but the food is wonderful and the real ales are served well. There are plenty of tables, which is a win compared to other local options and the place filled up well. The kids dishes were also wonderful; not your standard fare. A delightful find.

It is many years since we called here for lunch. Lovely, warm and homely atmosphere and we found a table by the log stove. Still wearing it’s Christmas decorations the pub was very welcoming. Good choice of home cooked food and generous portions. My choice, Pork, chestnut and orange sausages with a cranberry and red wine sauce on a bed of luscious mash. There is a comfortable dining room for larger parties and an attractive outside seating area for summer use. Plenty of parking. Not far from Ashbourne or Tissington.

A welcome return to the truly excellent pub. A warm welcome is assured as is a first class menu and excellent variety of specials. Two roaring fires made for a great atmosphere. The food was presented well and nice and hot and extremely tasty. Puddings also excellent.

We returned to this lovely pub/restaurant having been here a couple of times previously.Good ambience, welcome could be warmer and moved up tempo! We came here twice within a few days, starters good, there was a set menu for Christmas and Christmas Turkey Dinner disappointing apart from the vegetables which were cooked to our taste; al dente. Second visit we went off the set menu and food was delicious and more like we’d experienced previously. Good value, warm, good ambiance. Would return again!

This is a quality place to eat and drink. It is some 10 years since we last visited but at last we have managed to return to one of our favourite pubs in the Ashbourne area. The welcome, like the log burning stoves, is warm. The atmosphere is pleasant and the food outstanding. We visited for the first day of the new Christmas Menu. One turkey roast with all the trimmings and one roast topside. Both were excellent, tasty and piping hot. The accompanying veg were numerous and again good quality and steaming hot on arrival at the table. It is possible to eat in the cosy bar area, or in a dining area to the front and the rear of the pub.Good service, great food and good value, what is there to complain about?Hopefully it will not be another 10 years before we return again.

This little gem has the most wonderful food a cosy atmosphere . The salmon was moist and the veg cooked to perfection and the sauce delicious I then sat by the wood burner with a lovely glass of Red on a miserable wet afternoon .

We have had so many meals spoiled recently by the overpowering smell of dogs and the ambience ruined by inconsiderate dog owners failing to control yapping pets! So thank you Coach and Horses for maintaining a relaxed , civilise atmosphere that adds to the quality of the dining experience!

We visited with friends on a Saturday. The pub is great, with a really nice menu and fantastic food. The specials list is extensive. Very friendly staff, well presented in a very cosy environment.

After an enjoyable, but tiring, walk in Dovedale, we were on our way to Ashbourne to find somewhere to have an early dinner. But before we got that far, we spotted the Coach and Horses in Fenny Bentley. We stopped to check, and found that food was served all day, and an enticing looking menu. Well, what a find! The staff couldn't have been friendlier or more accommodating, and it was a very comfortable environment for a meal. The food was excellent, and both food and drinks very reasonably priced. If we are in Dovedale again, we shall certainly re-visit the Coach and Horses.

Meeting with family together, Coach and Horses had a quiet area to chat. Then the evening meal arrived, hot and delicious. Thanks to the chef for interesting and tasty meals.

Recently visited with the family, had not been here for quite a while and was pleased to see that it is still run very well by the same family. The serviced was excellant as was the food. There is a good choice of home cooked hot and cold meals to choose from and a specials board. All in my party enjoyed what was served to them and the children particularly ate well. This place also serves some of the best chips I have had in a restaurant. Thanks for such good food

Lovely proper pub with good service and great food. We had a lovely seafood platter with calamari, mackerel, prawns and smoked salmon in generous portions and a shake special. This was followed by a lovely lemon ice cream gateau with strawberries and cream. Great pint of pedigree and lovely viognier chardonnay.

Initially we were dubious about visiting this pub for lunch. The online standard menu was not enticing. I convinced my wife that there was probably a specials board and that there might be something more palatable for both of us on it.

Excellent service and truly wonderful food. All served up by friendly staff. A great visit for a hearty meal. Nice selection of whisky

this is the only pub in Thorpe, I think, and is very pleasant with a range of beer and an interesting menu at reasonable prices. We were well catered for with vegetarian food. definitely worth going to if you are nearby

Just saw the last review, and no idea how it coukd have been so bad. Went cycling for the day, and pulled in to the pub for food. The beef and mushroom pie was very nice, also the haddock and chips was just as nice. We would definitely return here if we're this way again

If you are looking for very average pub grub then the Coach & Horses will suit you. Our hosts recommended this as a gastronpub - sadly the ‘gastro’ has long departed! If average frozen chips, over-cooked veg and meat that was distinctly bland and not as we had ordered (the duck wasn’t even pink) are your bag, eat here.

Struggled to find anywhere to eat last minute on a Sunday, but these guys were great and we were sat within a few minutes. Great little place, cosy bar, airy dining room. Top quality homemade food and fantastic service in this family run pub. Great job, thank you !

As we were staying nearby we really wanted to have an evening meal here. Unfortunately we were stopped by the unfriendly no dogs sign on the door. The only seating outside was right beside a very busy and noisy road.

Went for lunch after a walk round nearby Ilam park. Friendly staff welcomed us into the pub. We ordered drinks and Sunday lunches which arrived quickly. Portions were generous and wow it was yummy. Really lovely relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

This very typical English pub sits on a main road with an ample pub. We just called in for a drink the other Sunday night and it word had clearly got out!! Most tables occupied with eaters and the food looked really good. The landlady welcomed us, offered exactly what we wanted and clearly ran this pub really well. The Coach and Horses at Fenny Bentley is on the main road 2 miles North of Ashbourne with ample car paring. It has an authentic traditional feel with several dining areas.

We enjoyed a pint or tow here the other night sitting next to the open fire on a very cold Easter evening. we didn't eat but the food we smelt and saw looked and smelt amazing. The bar staff were very friendly and we would definitely return and maybe eat next time.
