This place has really gone downhill. Used to be great but our latest order you could tell had been sat there all day (we ordered Sunday evening). The food was incredibly dry, the chips shrivelled they were that old, the battered sausage was like chewing on a boot and the curry pots have since shrunk in size. The worst bit though was that we didn’t realise until we returned home that one of our fish orders was off. As soon as we opened the box it absolutely stank, how they didn’t notice this themselves beggars belief, either that or the staff just simply don’t care. Rancid smelling fish so had to bin the lot. Complete waste of money.

Would give 0 stars if I could. Paid £5 for a handful of “large” chips . This place has gone down hill massively. I was looking forward to it all day and it was more than a let down. Do not recommend and won’t be returning.

We were bitterly disappointed when being regular customers that when telling staff they had forgotten half of our order last time that we were likely lying about the whole situation. We only wanted what we had paid for last time to be placed onto today’s order with photo evidence what was missed previously. Even an apology would have been appreciated. Sadly, we are no longer buying from this fish and chip bar and are taking our custom elsewhere.

Having been longstanding customers and enjoying the food, we had recently ordered for 2 and received 1 meal. This wasn’t much of an issue, an inconvenience but human error was appreciated as I was once a chippy worker in my teens stressed by a multitude of orders. Ultimately, it was £5 worth of loss, but a main to the chips nonetheless. When we returned on the 21st Feb however, we almost embarrassingly mentioned our short loss and asked for minor compensation with regards to a sausage and a side (which was the items forgot) to be accused immediately of potentially lying and moving onto the next customer in a condescending way. I can appreciate that the ‘lying’ can be a reasonable thought but the promptness and carelessness of the delivery made our politeness and the inconvenience feel unsubstantial. Bear in mind my partner and I would never leave a negative review for an independent establishment but the familiarity and appreciation you would expect from such was not received. It was an extremely rude and an unappreciative response.

It's always busy here and they have very high standards, so the quality is very high. However the portions are small and it's VERY expensive. Id recommend if your fish and chips being done right is important to you, it's the nearest spot to you and you can't make the trip to another, however it is unreasonably expensive. Just as good and more reasonable price at Bishopston Fish Bar (closed on Sundays) and Fishminster (southville)

I ordered cod chips and curry just the cod let me down for £9 the cod batter was hard very crispy hardly any cod need to sort it out and dry the cod that was there was good but portion of the cod disappointing the chips and curry were spot on

Used to be the best however the quality is starting to slip unfortunately. Also a few people have tested theories of potential overcharging which seems to be rather common here. Shame :( Edit: 29/1/25, Decided to give it another go. Wow, the portions have shrunk. Ordered a large chips and this doesn't seem to be any different than the normal size and the tartar sauce is now tiny! 96g with the pot. £7.50 is barely going to feed one person. 👎

Can I just start off by saying the homemade tartar sauce is up there with some of the best I have tasted. Chips and fish are great quality, overall taste keeps me coming back and other than it being on the steaper price, this is an amazing shop I would highly recommend to anyone visiting the Clifton area.

Not the best value for money when delivered. No idea why people are talking about generous potions sizes - paid £15 for a small portion of fish and chips! Southern fried chicken was a fiver for 5 small nuggets. A measly meal with good flavour ruined by small portions. Very small portion of fish - batter sticking to the box more than to the fish itself. Chips and curry sauce were good. Flavours of the fish was decent, but massively disappointed and feel I’ve not got my moneys worth at all

Don’t have onion vinegar, curry sauce was ok in flavour but was watery, no vegan options apart from chips, and the chips tasted like they were made a week ago

Very overpriced for the portion sizes. The service was also a little slow. They make you pay 40p for ketchup so overall a mid experience.

A very normal fish and chips even bland, the cutlery they give you doesn't cut it. I also ordered the squid, there were 5 small ones and they charge a lot for them, I certainly won't be back.

I wanted the traditional English fish & chips and this place seemed an ideal choice in Clifton. I saw previously how many people were queuing. I was not disappointed. The cod was fresh and tender. Cooked at the moment. And the chips with the delicious golden fry.

We were there at lunchtime to eat fish and chips, a nice little fish bar, friendly service and a short waiting time, the fish was very good, the fries were ok, the tartar sauce was very tasty, recommended, but the curry sauce was less recommended.

Almost £4 for a tiny portion of chips that were well below average quality for a chippy, with lots of tiny overdone pieces. Salt only applied to top of chips in bag so most missing it.

A great place to enjoy traditional Fish & Chips. Large portions, freshly prepared food, a large selection of toppings and one of the best tartar sauces I have ever eaten. Curry sauce served warm - something amazing.

Would not recommend ordering the cod, the portions here are absolutely tiny. I spent £9 on a piece of fish about the same size as a battered sausage - shameful pricing for that sort of portion. They have smaller boxes for the cod precisely for this reason. The large haddock, plaice and hake offer a more reasonable portion size. The staff are clearly stressed, and quite curt as a result, some are clearly working harder than others.. Chips are delicious when cooked right, but often undercooked. Hit and miss - I’d take my money elsewhere.

Are you hungry and just passing by? Jump in! There’s limited seating inside, and outside you can only sit if the weather is nice. The plastic cutlery is a bit annoying, but I guess they focus more on takeaways. The fish is finger-licking good! I highly recommend it! PS. The portions are big! :)

Absolutely appalling service, managed to get my order wrong twice somehow. The food was cold and massively overcooked. Used to be a decent fish and chip shop but absolutely awful now with a terrible staff attitude, only matched by the terrible food.

A HEARTY MEAL ..IF YOU ARE A MOUSE! I paid £12.40 for fish and chips, only to receive (after a very long wait) something little bigger than a child's portion. They were spending ages making up takeaway orders, without any sense of urgency, leaving the meals to go cold in the process. Won't be going there again..

Good quality fish and cooked well - chips were damp and oily. There’s a trick to frying a good, crispy, chip….still, a great place and good local choice 💫💜💫

Be careful about being overcharged. We were overcharged by 10 pounds. It could have been a mistake but I don't think so. We were promptly given a refund.

I was recommended this place by friend, unfortunately the staff were not that welcoming. The two ladies behind the counter were pretty much gossiping for the whole 20 minutes I was there and one in particular spoke rather rudely. I wouldn't normally leave such a bad review but me and my friend felt embarrassed when leaving.

Best fish and chips I’ve ever had, thought the price was rather high but worth every penny.

Chips were dry and looked/tasted like they had been reheated. Very disappointed.

Had excellent battered haddock. Sadly the chips here are always a bit lack luster. There's a sign in the window saying they are in the top 100 chip shops in the UK. If they improved the chips they could be in the top 10!

Long queues in front of a fish n chips shop is definitely a sign that the shop is good! The cod and chips set is yummy and great value for money. We also had a seafood basket, and the seafood were really fresh. We got the takeaways and ate at the Clifton Park. Just a heads up, the sausages weren’t as good. So better not order that.

Amazingly positive helpful staff! Amazing given how hard their job is! On their feet/pressure/heat. Not a long wait despite queue. Really fast given I had the hake which was cooked to order. Really good fish and chips. Proper! Best mushy peas I've ever tasted! Fresh! It's worth spending a bit extra to get the home made tartare sauce! Extremely good!

Had cod and chips to eat in. Cod was perfect. Got a mug of water on request. Thoroughly enjoyed my late lunch.

Lovely lovely staff. However - you have to pay extra for absolutely everything. £1.90 for a tiny pot of unsalted mushy peas with no mint or lemon isn't a fair price. Being charged per sachet of ketchup of tartar sauce is disappointing.

We regularly buy food from here and either sit inside or outside to eat and has always been good, we decided to order online for delivery and was so bad, the food eventually arrived and was at best slightly warm, the chips were soggy and the large haddock was probably about half the size of the large haddock we regularly have there, very disappointing and probably won't go back again now.

By far the best chippy I ate in. No old oil smell and both the chips and batter taste very light for a deep fried food. The portions are good size, potatoes and the sea food were delicious - their sea food basket on the picture.

good food whenever i have been / ordered from here. usually get the large haddock and chips which is a generous portion and can be shared between 2. also usually get the curry sauce which is delicious. limited seating inside though.

I tried the hake and chips, well cooked fish and tasty, a bit steep prices for take out (calculate 12-15 pounds for each fish n chips). Quite heavy for the evening (my fault for sure), my stomach was upset until the next morning.

Visiting Clifton village today, This was quite literally the most beautiful piece of cod ever. Not greasy and so tasty, it melted in my mouth. Wow. Will be here again

While the food was nice the service was so awful, i’ve never been treated that rudely by one of the staff before when all we were doing were ordering food (the purpose of the place😂) we were actually laughing in shock at his behaviour! unfortunately we will not go back as it was a very awful experience

Smallest portion ever. Ordered 2x cod and chips for £15+ each and received absolutely tiny portions, suitable for a 5 year old child. Beyond disappointed as we have enjoyed this place for years. We ordered take away as a Friday night treat and it was the worst start to the weekend.

Tried my first ever fish & chips as international student and it certainly lived up to my expectation and its award-winning reputation. The shop usually opens at 430pm, I arrived at 409pm but because it was raining, the manager(owner) let me in immediately (feel sorry about that). Ordered haddock(large) & chips on his recommendation, haddock was perfectly cooked, soft and juicy and I could still savour the freshness of the fish. Its coat was crispy. Abundant chips but ketchup is in separate purchase.

Absolutely minging battered sausages, rubbery and hard. Maybe we just got old food but it was gross. The chips were off, soggy and brown. The fish was nice at least. Fed the rest to the dog.

This might be the worst chip shop in the UK. This is not just because the fish nearly costs a tenner but the portion size you receive is terrible. The chips are like cardboard, and the sausage was dreadful. I wouldn’t mind paying extra if the food tasted good. But when you have bad food that’s overpriced, you feel like you’ve just been robbed. Also, they only had Irish curry which was so bad. If you were thinking of going, don’t. Save your money.

unfortunately flavourless. they do give salt and vinegar on the side, but these are so difficult to use (very little comes out) and even with these condiments it lacks flavour. condiments such as ketchup, tartare are extra charge, and chips were dry and i did not enjoy them. the haddock was alright, fresh, flaky, but also not seasoned

Always had good food here. Only 1 concern I have is the amount of salt they put on chips, just let the customer put salt on their own food. The stools are too tall for shorter people to sit on in the customer waiting area over-all a great take away. Keep it up...

Always fantastic experience ordering take away from Clifton Village Fish Bar! The staff prepare every order to great detail and the food always tastes excellent. Presentation is fantastic, as food is served separately so that it’s not affected by delivery. A regular place to order Fish and Chips from!

Decent traditional fish and chip shop. They serve various battered fish, sausages, saveloys, burgers, nuggets, chicken burgers, squid, calamari, prawn, etc. There's a few tables inside and out, you can order online, or at the counter. Prices are reasonable, service is fast, battered fish is cooked very well, chips are good, you have to pay for sachets of ketchup and mayonnaise, drinks are reasonable. Recommended.

With the dozens of accolades posted across the shop front we were excited to try the famous fish and chips. Hugely disappointed with the greasy cod and terrible chips. First visit was in early December and the last visit was yesterday (Friday). Both times got stale horrible chios and greasy cod. How they got all those rewards.. I have no idea. Done with them.... not going again.

Ordered Fish and Chips for a family meal on 28th December, to get home and discover the chips were rock hard and inedible, rang the shop and was told there was no way they were like that, no apology or offer of a refund for the chips, was told to email in, no email on website to do this, wont be going back again.

20 minutes waiting for a normal fish and chips get ready, looks like someone went to fishing the fish. When was ready not a lot of chips and was soooo small, like were scrapper from the bottom! Doesn’t worth the price.

So you dine in and not offer even a box of some sort for people to eat in and no cutlery so you eat from a paper bag,! The staff said they don’t offer a cardboard box or tray of any sort ?. The food is average really and a small portion compared to price.

Big portion of cod with lots of chips. The tarta sauce is the star, that I forgot to take the picture while enjoying it. Chips were seasoned well with salt and vinegar. Highly recommended for anyone who wants to try fish and chips when coming to Bristol, but if you go in big group (more than 5), you should take away as the seating area is not designed for group seating.

Went for 2 fish and chips with curry sauce and peas. When i got home was so saddened that the fish's were about 30 percent and 70 per cent batter. Abosoule day light robbery. SHAME ON YOU GUYS. MONEY GRABBERS.

Very nice staff but the cod portions are tiny. The chips portion is fine but expensive. Only one size cod and so pricey! No where near value for money…I can’t see how places like this are going to thrive because the value proposition is simply not there. Well over £30 for fish and chips for two. Takeaway! I notice the staff were pointing out the uniform size of the cod to customers at the point of order. Clearly they have had some push back on this.

Just got home with our takeaway, ordered cod and large chips. Sadly barely enough chips to constitute a regular portion let alone “large”. Really disappointing.

It’s a tasty spot with large portions of chips but my cod was a very thin piece considering I paid over £10! It’s in a convenient location and the prices are typical of Clifton village. The scampi here is delicious too.
