Lunch. To try their new lunchtime menu. We have been here a few times. This was an impromptu visit. It's a more refined restaurant located at what's known as The Island Quarter Nottingham. It's sits above their more casual space Binks Yard. The restaurant is spacious and contemporary and serves modern british cuisine. Lunch Menu Two Courses £37.5 or Three Courses £45. Once seated in our lovely comfy booth table, we were offered water for the table. Don't know why,was it thirsty? Only joking. Drinks order taken, and fresh bread with an olive butter was served. For starters, we chose the chicken & bacon terrine with a carrot ketchup and the BBQ mackerel with rhubarb and horseradish gel. Mains chosen were Fillet of Cornish Hake, cauliflower, yeast, and brown butter sauce. With an extra side of spring greens £5.50,which we didn't really need as there was more than enough to fill us on the mains. The other dish was Free Range pork. A hay cooked pork collar with apple and cider sauce. This was absolutely delicious and could have done with a little more sauce. It was served with Delmonico potatoes. What's that you say? Apparently its named after the New York restaurant where they were created, and Delmonico potatoes date back to the 19th century. Think of it as a cauliflower cheese but with potatoes. We didn't have desserts as the meal was very filling. The food and service were impeccable for one of Nottingham's finer restaurants, and lunchtimes are a more affordable time to visit. Having said that, they also offer an eveing supper club set menu for £45 Wed,Thur,Friday.

We love Cleaver and Wake, particularly the Beef Wellington on a Sunday lunch (be sure to order the Beef Wellington in advance!) Both of us treat each other to a meal at Cleaver and Wake for our special celebrations and are yet to be disappointed . Superb food at a good price (better than the ⭐️ restaurants in Nottingham)

Beautiful venue, few tweaks it will be perfect! My partner and I visited last night for the first time. We enjoy trying new places and had heard good reviews. We had the Boston chop between us, which if you like your steak, is certainly worth a try. Food was cooked well. My only feedback would be that the service was a little patchy. We had arrived early as per the email and sat having a drink in the bar. Beware the cocktails are good, albeit a rather pricey set. Having paid similar cocktail prices in the alchemist, I was expecting some showmanship or at least a cocktail that looked special. Sadly they were not. Tasted good though. Eventually, we were shown to our table. Had quite a mix of different people bringing us food and drinks. I will say that the food was extremely salty which inevitably made us more thirsty. The venue itself is beautiful. Lovely decor. Love the open plan kitchen so you can be part of the process. Other than its price tag, I’d say this was a lovely restaurant that I am sure will only get better as they tweak the process to make it stand out. Attention to detail is the key and consistency. Not sure we would rush to go back.

Ambience is very nice, car parking 4 minutes away. Staff very friendly and service was prompt - no complaints at all there. It's the food. We went Easter Sunday for the Sunday lunch (£40 two course, £50 three course). We have no problem spending 'money' on meals and frequently do, but I have to say, having heard good reports we were distinctly underwhelmed. My liver parfait starter was nice - nothing to scream about and my wife and I agreed the roast beef main course was simply 'average' - something I'd expect from a pub chain. There were two sorry looking carrots hidden under some green leaves, the Yorkshires were not freshly cooked (according to my wife who I call the 'Yorkshire Pudding Queen'), the roast potatoes were over cooked. There were two thin slices of beautifully cooked pink beef. We didn't bother with desert. There are much better value for money propositions with 10 miles of the city - not cheap - but better cooked, larger portions and better value. Shame we wont be going again.

We went for lunch for my partners birthday. I was very impressed with the venue and the food was excellent. At expensive places like this the portion sizes are usually smaller than average, our lunches however were not ! I would recommend anyone to try this place out for some really delicious food served by friendly attentive staff. We will be back for sure.

First time we’ve been here and we were not disappointed. We went to the River Cafe in London the day before we visited here, a week long big birthday celebration. Clever and Wake, pound for pound was better value, than the River Cafe! The River Cafe lunch menu was twice the price and not as good. Bar staff at C & W were polite, genuine people and so were the restaurant staff, especially Lindsey our waitress. Thanks for making our day special.

We had a very nice visit to this restaurant on a weekend break to Nottingham. The restaurant location is a bit of a walk from the city centre, but there’s not much one can do about that. The Art Deco design is very modern and appealing. The seating is very comfortable however I did notice some stains to the upholstery which could easily be cleaned. The waitress that served us (very pretty blonde girl) was super impressive. She was extremely attentive and very professional in her general manner. I had the beetroot and goats cheese starter which was amazing. Followed by the roast chicken. The chicken was beautifully cooked and the veg was lovely. The chicken sauce whilst delicious however my personal taste was that it didn’t really go with Yorkshire pud due to it being a cream based sauce, so I asked for some gravy to go with my Yorkshire pud which I saved till last so as not to mix the sauce with the gravy. The gravy was a disappointment as it was very watery and lacked flavour. My husband had mackerel to start which he assures was 1st class and the beef wellington as a main. This was also lovely apart from the gravy which he also found to be watery and lacking flavour. My husband also pointed out that head Chef Hira Thakur was plating up food with his bare hands. He was also touching other surfaces and shaking peoples hands in between. Obviously this could be seen due to the open kitchen. Other than that the whole dining experience was lovely thank you. Highly recommended!

Brought my mum here for the first time on Mothering Sunday, on recommendation from my cousin. Lovely restaurant with a great atmosphere, delicious food and exemplary service throughout. I'd like to make special mention of our lovely bartender from Doncaster (I'm so sorry, I didn't ask your name), who made us two delicious Singapore Slings to round the night off, and spent time chatting to us even though I'm sure he had plenty of other things to be doing. My mum felt thoroughly spoilt for the entire visit, and we can't wait to come back and see you all again soon.

The meal was absolutely perfect from start to finish. Attentive wait staff (and lots of them!) who didn't let empty plates or glasses sit on the table longer than a few seconds it seemed! And a great wine recommendation. The venue itself was lovely too, possibly the classiest room I've ever been in. Also, as an extra tiny bonus, I am used to (and extremely annoyed by) the bill being constantly placed in front of my husband when we dine together. Here, I asked for the bill, and it was very definitively placed in front of me! Small victories 😉

Been waiting for the right moment to eat at this spectacular venue. I treated a very close friend to a birthday dinner, knowing it was the place she wanted to experience too. On arrival we was shown to the bar for pre dinner drinks. The cocktails was made to perfection. We was shown to our lovely relaxing table and Natalia was our waiteress for the evening. We was given warm bread with an amazing chorizo butter. Our starters, main course, sides and desserts were all absolutely stunning. Flavours of gastronomic talent created by head chef Hira and his team. Our relaxed but attentive service was just perfect. Truly the best of hospitality you can experience. Well done to all involved

Very nice food and great staff. We went and had some lovely food with wines, cocktails and beers. The starters of miso salmon and the special of lamb kofta was delicious and definitely our favourite. We also went for the special steak which was very tasty. Overall a very nice experience and I would come back. The setting is very nice, but for the price (so I judge a little harder than other places) I expected a little more. Another point there is only one beer on tap freedom lager.

The second visit and certainly not as slick as the first which was early December on a Saturday. Can’t fault the bar staff before the meal, who served the drinks promptly and politely; but we were booked in for 12 and seated at 12:10 and the lackluster approach to time followed as the meal progressed. I appreciate £45 is reasonable for a three course dinner, but when you’re the only dinners in the establishment for the first thirty minutes, the bread taking time, the starters taking 35 minutes does seem a little confusing, then the deserts being hurried because the restaurant is busier seems a little contradictory. In no way is this a reason not to try, however, knowing how superb the service could be based on the pre Christmas experience , it was a touch disappointing. The food was excellent- Lamb superb. Beef a little cold but that was because it was under the heat lamps for longer than it should have been. Would still recommend but just advise people to temper expectations regarding exceptional service until the front of house rectify their pace and efficiency. Forgot to claim my Island quarter points but also not prompted by the staff.

For the price this place is just ok. I have been to a few places of this price and you normally get an amuse-bouche or two, and a few things that makes the meal interesting. All you get here is the 3 courses and you even have to pay extra for basic sides, for example chips with the steak. The food was good but we had matching wines and again no real description of the wines that you normally get at this level of restaurant. Also my Cointreau coffee (similar to an Irish coffee... If you haven't tried it then you should, it's delicious... Just maybe not here) was terrible, I sent one back and the next one was worse. Overall food good but the experience for the price needs to be better.

Very nicely done restaurant, interesting menu and all looks the part. Great wine list and superb bar. Food was delicious as was agreed by all our party. However - I do think it’s unfathomably expensive. I had monkfish and chips for main course which is c £54 inc service charge - seems A LOT, another side dish and you would well over £60. Service in the restaurant was patchy and not commensurate with the price point they are trying to extract from you. Service in the bar was superb. I do wish them well though - if the service was top notch I think this place would really fly.

I’m so sorry not to rate this higher because watching the chefs work their socks off it should be. BUT they are let down by waitress/front of house. This is supposed to be (& should be classed as) a high end restaurant. However there are basics which sadly (and still as is on my 6/7 visit here) are not upheld. If we are offered an aperitif then that’s exactly what it should be. Not the case tonight. It firstly took ages to be asked about a drink and then ages for it to arrive. We even delayed ordering our meal to await said drinks. That said our starters still came while still having our cocktails which is not appropriate. That then meant the wine coming mid meal rather than ready for the meal. We are referring to basic pre-requisites here. The meal generally felt rushed and then post the meal we had to flag staff down to request coffee etc. On my very first visit I put some of the poorer service down to teething problems but I’d say by now this should be nailed. I watch in awe at the chefs working here tonight and they deserve huge amounts of praise because the food they turn out is pretty awesome. Please please train your front of house/waitressing staff to be better because it is them being better that will make the difference. Incidentally concentrating on the famous people in there (Sean Dyche tonight!) does not make up for not concentrating on us mere mortals!!! There is definitely a disparity between the kitchen (who seems excellent) and the restaurant staff (who need to up their game). I am not one to be awkward in a restaurant but I am one who expects great service at a restaurant that firstly sells themselves as a special destination venue and secondly one that pops 10% automatically on the bill for service!!!! We brought our friends for their first time tonight and sadly wasn’t what we hoped it would be (again). It’s a stunning venue, the food is amazing but please sort out the service because that’s going to make or break you! Also lose the ridiculousness of not accepting cash!!!!

I've awarded 4 stars which marks up as Very Good as 3 stars is Average, which would be unfair. A very attractive restaurant serving good food but completely let down by the service. Our coats were taken and we were shown to our table. We waited, and waited and waited for someone to ask if we would like a drink, a menu, anything..... a senior member of staff walked past our table twice to top up wine glasses at a neighbouring table. She finally noticed us trying to catch her attention, saw we had no menus or drinks and came over but didn't apologise. In fairness, she did bring us a card wishing us Happy Anniversary which was kind. We ordered a cocktail and our meals plus a bottle of wine. After a long wait our cocktails arrived. We each had a Blackberry Frappe, which were very good but perhaps served in the wrong glass as we both ended up with a lot of icing sugar on our faces. Our food was delightful, pine cured salmon and chicken liver parfait then both of us had the beef cheeks with perhaps the best mashed potato we've ever had. A cheeseboard and sticky toffee pudding to finish. Both of these were ok but nothing special. Something I really object to: supplements. Of the 7 main dishes, 3 were marked as such. To get back to the poor service. We were told by the waiter who brought our food that the waitress who had brought our cutlery and bread was refusing to pour us any wine. Astonishing. We ended up doing this ourselves. Presumably a confidence matter but certainly not what we would expect in a restaurant that markets itself as a Michelin restaurant. When our bill arrived we asked for the service charge to be removed. It was and we chose to tip the young man who, in our opinion, was the only member of the waiting staff who was actually doing his job. Would I return? To be honest I really don't know.

It's a great setting and the food looks far better than it tastes. We went for Sunday lunch, this was our third and final visit. The first time we went, it was 5 stars all the way through, the second wasn't as good, and yesterday's visit was really poor. The roast itself looked OK but as you can see in the photo, the vegetables might as well stayed in the kitchen. The potatoes were so hard, they were inedible. Despite it not being very busy, we had to wait 50 mins between starter and main course. The Yorkshire pudding was cold, and sat on a white sauce that left an unpleasant fatty coating on the roof of your mouth. It's a pity, because it was great.

My daughter booked a table here for us to celebrate her graduation last week. Along with my husband, we were joined by my daughter’s boyfriend and family, who are real ‘foodies’ and frequent all the celebrated restaurants. Cleaver and Wake didn’t disappoint. Everything was great and the food perfect. Thank you so much. We will return and definitely recommend.

I had a 50th party upstairs on the 17th June through their events team, on arrival the gentlemen that was at reception desk to greet us was rude he did not even say hello or smile at anyone or ask to take my coat or were I could put it so I left it on the table and I was the birthday girl and my brother said hello to him and he did not even reply which I found very rude when we were paying for a service you expect to get it. The next day I went to collect my gifts and birthday cake from upstairs my gifts were left in the unlocked room I could not collect my cake due to no one being there, so when i went downstairs and spoke to the manager who told me he could not help due to it being their events team and he would send them an email. After several emails to the events team I am still waiting for a receipt for the night and still waiting for a refund for part of the deposit due to being told that I met the minimum spend of £3000 I have never even got my birthday cake back.

Sunday lunch. A tasty celeriac starter, but things went rapidly downhill. Poorly cooked beef sirloin: could barely get the knife through the fat. Obviously reheated potatoes: over-cooked skins with damp nastiness inside. Broccoli so 'al dente' that it nearly pinged off the plate when cut. Yorkshire pud like cardboard. Dessert was 'mascerated strawberries and cream' - it was over-fussy sweet splodge with no discernible flavour. Staff dashing about frequently knocking the backs of our chairs. Acoustics terrible, with music poorly selected and too loud (frenetic caterwauling souless soul music). Enjoyed the wine, but the restaurant couldn't really make a mess of that. I must say, the maître d was efficient with glassware and other accomodations for the elderly members of my party. Overall, this place has lots of highfalutin ideas but the execution is amateurish. Avoid.

Second time we have been to Cleaver and Wake. This time we had Sunday dinner and it was absolutely beautiful. The staff are superb and a great credit to the place. It's actually really lovely not having children under a certain age in the establishment, it means I can relax and enjoy my food along with my family.

Can’t wait to be back!! We will be talking about this for months, telling all our family and friends, definitely recommend!

Came for our anniversary and was a perfect place to celebrate. Beautiful setting and interior, all the staff were very attentive and professional. Complementary bread with marmite butter was divine. Steak tartare starter was flavoursome with plenty of texture. Pidgeon bbq main was superb though the sausage could have been warmer. Ribeye was better than Hawksmoor. Both desserts were delicious. Overall Cleaver and Wake did meet and exceed expectations. Will be back for another special occasion for sure.

Dinner Birthday celebration We've been before for lunch but not in the evening. We managed to book this fabulous restaurant to celebrate a special occasion. Started off with a couple of cocktails in the bar. One being a classic Mojito that is not on the menu, but they gladly accommodated. When seated in the restaurant, there was a lovely birthday card on the table, quickly followed by a glass of Champagne. Which was totally unexpected and a very nice touch. To start, we had Oysters Natural & Tempura For the first course, we chose Beef Fillet Tartare Black garlic, mushroom, confit egg yolk & sourdough crostini. Spiced Crab Salad. Nashi pear, brown crab ice cream & sourdough. Mains Tandoori Monkfish Coriander and mint chutney, mango relish, curied musel, fennel & monksfish bhaji. 8oz Fillet Steak Served with triple cooked chips, onion ring & dressed baby leaves. Along with a trio of very tasty sauces. With sides of Buttered BBQ Hispi cabbage Purple sprouting Broccoli. Desserts BLOOD ORANGE SOUFFLÉ Milk ice cream WHITE CHOCOLATE & STRAWBERRY White chocolate pafait, macerated strawberries, sable biscuit crumb & strawberry meringue. Everything was absolutely delicious. We were treated very well, especially by the chef Hira, and the staff are all friendly and professional. Even though it was a very busy night, service was very brisk and efficient. Thank you for such a memorable evening.

Went for Sunday lunch. Nice welcome at reception. Decor is modern, simple and clean, couldn't fault it. Staff are very good, nice, polite and attentive without being overbearing. The food: The salt baked celeriac was fantastic, exceptional presentation and very tasty. The beef sirloin was beautifully cooked and the accompanying vegetables were very good, with exception to the roast potatoes. The outside of the potatoes were a little tough to cut into and a little dry on the inside. I think they had been roasted and then kept warm (for to long). Again, the presentation was very good. Chocolate delice with ice cream for desert. Very nice, very rich. Again the presentation was great, decorated with honeycomb and chocolate pieces. It wasn't a large portion, but you wouldn't want any more due to the richness, perfect portion size in my opinion. When the bill came there was a couple of glasses of wine on it that we hadn't had. They were removed when we pointed it out. Service charge of 10% automatically added, which I think was fine, especially for the service we received. Another downside which has nothing to do with the venue or food, was the small (6) young group of people on the table behind us. They were very loud and the woman with a horribly loud laugh could be heard when I was in the men's room, some distance from where she was. Overall a very nice restaurant with great food. £50 for a 3 coarse Sundy lunch.

Faultless. Service throughout was friendly, welcoming while also accommodating a reservation change a few hours before a Friday night booking. And the food! We had the Tandoori Monkfish and Lamb for Mains, both superb, perfectly cooked and beautifully presented. Highly recommend Pigs Ears while sipping on drinks too! Chef Heera smashed it again!
