The food was actually ok and fresh! The staff member can only imagine it’s the owner was unbelievably rude & unhelpful we are staying here for the weekend so we are not local - she seemed friendly to the locals! Our money is just as good as anyone else’s and some courtesy would not go a miss! HOW CAN YOU NOT UNDERSTAND COD & CHIPS??? Unbelievable rudeness! Avoid if your not local!

Don’t believe these opening times. They stop serving way before and only sell the cold left overs. The owner was also so rude and unhelpful. Shame.

Popped over whilst staying at landmark trust Ancient House (a brilliant property). Had cod and chips. Lightly battered and cod very soft and tender. Generous portions of chips. Also tasty and not greasy. Place was sparkling clean. Service very friendly. A pleasure to shop there abd we greatly enjoyed our meal.

The fish & chips used to be dreadful then improved greatly and are still very good. Unfortunatly let down by the rudest server imaginable. So many locals now use the Glemsford chippy because of her attitude

On the old High Street, opposite the magnificent church, this is largely a takeaway establishment, with just two garden patio-style tables for dining-in. Our second visit, since many months ago, as we live a distance away, and again we were not disappointed. Cooked fresh while we waited a short time and just delicious fish and chips. Nice staff, just perfect and very reasonably priced - about 10 pounds for the two of us. A perfect place for a visitor to take the weight off their legs in this very historic town and some magnificent buildings immediately opposite, dating from the 1400s.

I live in the mountains of northern Spain and there is one thing that I miss above all and that's a good fish and chips. When I come back to visit family in Essex my first port of call is a chippy. This time I've struck gold. The Claire chip shop has the best home made chips I've had in years and the fish is really good too. There's not much more to say other than that I have visited this oasis of deliciousness three times in the last two weekends and I'll most definitely be back again soon.

Went to this fish and chip shop last Friday to get a take away, it was about 7.00pm and I could see that there was a bit of a line outside which I always think is good because people are willing to wait, which is a good sign. The young girl took my order which was fish and chips twice, and we had to wait for about 10 minutes which I didn't mind .when we got our order home and tasted it it was lovely, the fish wasn't greasy but crispy and the chips were also lovely , eating it took me back to my younger days when you used to get a decent fish and chips and not like some of the rubbish you can get in some of the shops.shame we was only on hoilday when we went to this shop otherwise I would use it all the time.

This is primarily a takeaway establishment as it only has two tables, each for up to four people. We passed by today and were lucky it was empty and sat down to a lunch of one plaice and one large cod. The fish was tip-top, fresh fish deep fried to absolute perfection. Served on paper, on a plastic tray, jst right. Chips were maybe a bit ordinary but nothing can compare with that fish. Situated just down the High Street, opposite the magnificent church but not all that easy to notice. Look for dark red paint, the premises look quite like a house from down the street. Don't give up. Ask a local person if you need to. Very good value, too, got change from ten pounds for two !

This was my very first trip to England and we'd had a busy schedule. We were only in Clare for an overnight and we were walking around, enjoying the beautiful evening. My cousin saw the fish place and wanted to get some. I really wasn't interested because it was late and we were gonna have a big breakfast in the morning. I complied tho and I'm so glad I did! Probably the best fish & chips I've ever had! I would trade it for a big breakfast any day! ;) We did have to wait for it to be cooked, but it was fresh and delicious. I hope to return to Clare again some day and when I do, I will be stopping here for sure. The staff was very friendly as well - that made it even nicer.

I have a golden rule with Fish and Chip establishment, There has to be a que because then the fat will be boiling hot and the batter cooked rather than the fish. I stopped there one Friday night for a take away and there was no que but I reasoned that being in a very small town they were cooking according to customers. IT WAS RUBBISH the batter was poor but the fish was like rubber where it had been in the hot cabinet far to long.As for the chips they were soggy. I will never be going back there as long as I live.

I have been using this fish and chip shop since I moved to Clare in 1995. I have to say that I've not tasted better anywhere else and my two sons would agree. Even when we went to an award winning one in scotland we thought clare was better. The quality has always been very good and fish definitely fresh. It's good value for money, with large pieces of fish. If timed right you can get it served straight away, but sometimes you might wait for 5 mins if they've just put some fresh in the fryer. At least you know it's fresh.

Went for our annual work Christmas Dinner. Given a welcome drink of prosecco or elderflower, as the non-alcoholic option on arrival. The elderflower was scarcely present, unfortunately there was little difference between it and lukewarm water. Seemed to take an age to be taken through to the dinning hall, despite apparently needing to be at the venue for 6.30. There was no option to open a bar tab - at the bar which had no coke, no lime cordial, no white tequila, only one white wine - so it was complete chaos trying to organise buying the drinks! Eventually taken through to a very nicely laid out dinning hall and seated. Those who wanted another drink before our meal had to go back upstairs, after finding me to come and pay for it. Very inconvenient. The meal started to come out after 8pm - everyone was really hungry. The starter choice was a fig tart, or prawn cocktail. The prawn cocktail was absolutely miniscule - 3 prawns in a little sauce on a little lettuce leaf, it's a good job there was a small bread roll at each place setting! A good 30 minutes after rhe starter had been cleared the main came out - turkey (which was cooked nicely) 3 tiny new potatoes (no roast potatoes) a couple of sprouts, carrots and parsnips, with gravy. A very very disappointing 'turkey roast' without roast potatoes or stuffing. Dessert was either Christmas pudding or raspberry and lemon trifle, which consisted of 3 squares of soggy jellied sponge, some green dots and a spot of custard covered with a squirt of cream. In no way did it resemble a trifle. Even getting a tea or coffee was not possible until the station was 'opened' thought there was no indication whatsoever that it was closed until 9.30! When a member of staff was asked we were told that the doors are closed and nobody should be out there trying to get hot drinks until it was announced as open. All in all a very disappointing meal served by mainly surly servers. The evening lacked any kind of Christmas feel about it from start to finish. Won't be going back or recommending

Was given a £50.00 token for my birthday. Booked and went today. Dressed smartly. Parked in car park which was full of puddles and ended up entering the hotel with muddy boots and trousers. Felt embarrassed but needn't have worried. Receptionist was busy on the phone so found our own way to restaurant. We both ordered beef. Literally couldn't cut it, the potatoes were also tough (reheated?). The waitress asked us if everything was ok and I pointed out the beef and potatoes. She offered us a steak knife which we took. I gave up with my beef and potatoes my husband valiantly carried on. The puddings were good. The hotel had the vibe of a hostel, the clientele wondering around in jeans, wellies and trainers, lots of children running around (I was told later on that this was a family hotel), we had people with stocking feet, wellies and dressing gowns in the restaurant. The staff were great but the food was not. When we received the bill we saw a discount of £6.00 on it, I asked what this was for and apparently this was supposed to cover the meal I couldn't eat.
