I recently had dinner at Recess before a concert and I have to say that's been fantastic. From great food, cozy atmosphere but most importantly super friendly and attentive staff. Location is great because it's not in the middle of chaos like other restaurants nearby but still really close to canal. I really recommend it!

Popped in for a drink before a show next door. £5.75 for a small lime and soda. Manager called over and reduced it to £3 75. Didn't seem to realise that unflavoured water being more expensive than the coke (which was what we were after, but they'd run out) was unreasonable. We left.

We were looking for a convenient place to eat before attending a concert at the symphony hall and came across this restaurant on our while walking to the venue. It looked ok and was also listed on the Meerkat app. We went inside and eventually, a staff member approached us and asked if she could help. I enquired if they had a table available and re the meerkat offer. She had not heard of meerkat meals and seemed totally confused, but she did go off to ask someone else for us. She returned with a male staff member who did not seem particularly interested in us and when we asked him the same questions, he said they were not currently doing the offer and that we would need to book in any case. We noticed the place was more or less empty, but despite this he did not seem to want our custom anyway. We thanked them (I’m not sure for what?) and went on to find an excellent and very welcoming alternative close by. So, we can’t speak for the food, but the staff didn’t seem very interested in customers and the place had a dreary and almost utilitarian atmosphere to it.

Received restaurant vouchers for my 40th last year which we were unable to redeem due up Covid. Decided to use them, this week. Despite emailing the restaurant and phoning them to confirm my booking, we were still denied confirmation of the bookings due to the fact that restaurant vouchers had expired. They had confirmed that they will be extended all vouchers until October 2021 however the restaurant refused us entry in an empty restaurant!! Not wondering why it was empty on Thursday night anymore…. Menu was limited. Not appealing at all, service was lacking and atmosphere dire! Not somewhere I wanted to spend the evening! Decided to try Piccolino around the corner and had one of the best meals ever… Silver lining..

A little late writing a review but better late then never. Booked a table here in May while it was only outdoor dining and drinks. It was an awful weekend weather wise but we still went. It is only a small terrace but its sheltered from the rain which was great. Table service was extremley quick and efficient. Prices were reasonable considering its a hotel cheaper than some of the bars we drink at. Staff are really friendly even though they had masks on still made an effort to have a chat with you. Will be back to try the food one of the weekends.

Friendly staff but seemed unorganised including servers not sure which tablet they were on and mixing up our drinks orders. Food was late coming out and overpriced for what it was but tasty. Very hasty with ensuring bills were paid including shoving a card machine in my face while I was chewing my food.

* firstly we were made to feel so bad for wanting to eat at the restaurant upon arrival and tried to say they were REALLY busy and wouldn’t stop emphasising this. A minute layer in the restaurant, we got seated and saw 2 tables of 2.... super busy right? * They didn’t approach us asking for drinks, I had to wait for someone to ask us about the food order before I said ‘where do we order drinks?’ * They waited until I was ready to order to say 3 things on the menu were not available. I then asked to change my order because I wasn’t happy with the sudden selection I’d made. I had requested a change in my choice 2 whole minutes after I placed the order. * When I then asked if I could have the vegetarian chilli she said ‘I’ll have to check’ I’m sat here 20 minutes later with her walking by or talking and laughing with her work colleagues and is YET to inform me if I can have my chosen dish so I’m very intrigued as to what will come to the table. * Not making assumptions but when your staff are sat collectively whispering behind their hands and thinking they’re discreetly pointing at our table is just unacceptable. It makes us feel extremely uncomfortable and is not how you portray a highly rated hotel. * Staff seem more attentive to their own colleagues eating food in a corner and sitting and giggling with them instead. * Multiple tables were served before us, without even an apology or explanation as to why. We wouldn’t have been so upset about this if someone had just had the courtesy to come across. * No sauces were offered to us, no salt and pepper. We looked at every other table who seemed to have been offered this. * I was served the wrong dip on my food, I was too hungry at this point to argue, we had been waiting 45 minutes for a salad and a poorly heated up chilli. * We had to ask someone for the desert menu after they cleared our plates and forgot about us for 15 minutes. As you can imagine, we were feeling more than unhappy about this experience before this point. * May I just add, the girl with shorter wavy hair was extremely lovely and what has been said in this message is completely excluding her. My main concern is the treatment we received from the lady with a lip piercing and ginger hair in a ponytail. * In conclusion, I will be feeding this back to DPD group accordingly. Who use this hotel on a regular basis, I think it is appalling you have people like this representing your hotel when they do not have basic communication skills nor do they uphold the reputation a Hilton Hotel has. Shockingly; there is no I can leave feedback on Recess Facebook page, which I assume is to hinder the fact their customer service approach is nothing but useless. Working in this environment for way over 7 years, I hope you take this feedback on board and relay this to the Recess ‘team’ as I would be saddened others have to go through this experience like I did.

Came on a 50% off in January deal as had a good work Xmas do here. Waited for a few minutes to be acknowledged and seated. The squid wasn’t crispy, as the menu suggested, but limp and served with a cereal bowl of mayonnaise which helped to disguise the terrible cooking. Ribeye was very charred, obscuring the natural flavour, and they didn’t have any mustard, but brought a pot of packets of ketchup which is unusual with a £25 steak. Overpriced, underloved

I have reviewed this more fully under the hotel page as that's where we stayed however.... I would avoid. Vastly overpriced for what you get in quality and amount. Items listen on menu as gluten free are not actually gluten free. They then try and charge extra to swap the items. Sadly, because of the link to the Hilton name this place gives you the impression of a quality establishment. It isn't. Go somewhere else, pay less, and get better food.

My family and I frequently visit here however, our trip yesterday was very disappointing. I called the restaurant a week in advance to change the date to the one we had booked and was told it had been done. I called to double check the day before to find out the date was still incorrect. I confirmed the correct date and was told the manager would call back to confirm. I missed the call due to work and no message was left. I then called back as soon as I could, only for the waiter to tell me he was very busy and to call back. Quite rude I think. I called again later on in and was told only a manager could confirm and I would be called back. No call came.

Used this restaurant and bar since we were staying at the hotel. The bar has nice big comfy armchairs and sofas with a few windosws to the back of the Hilton hotel (not overlooking the square). The drinks prices were steep - I paid £8.65 for a cocktail which was nice but the glass was a little short of full. The evening ambience is a bit detracted from by the large TVs showing news and sport and competing with the bar music - but this is a problem common to all hotel bars. During the day it is a cosy coffee shop. You can also take drinks into the airy hotel lobby (which does overlook the square). This also has comfy seats and actually offers a bit more privacy.

Although we’d booked in advance, when we arrived and announced ourselves the member of staff looked completely blank and mystified, so much so I began to wonder if we were in the right place. He waved us to a waiting area, and after a few minutes another member of staff came over and asked if we were the [somebody else] party. We said no and stated our name again - and he just walked off! After another couple of minutes’ waiting the second chap beckoned us forward with a finger gesture, which we felt to be extremely rude and lazy. Not a great start. Once we were seated our waiter then inexplicably asked us what we wanted to drink - er, TEA?? Did they have a choice of teas, we had to ask him! He brought us menus but there were no teas listed at all (why?) and he proceeded to recite the list from memory. The cups on the table were coffee cups - how can any restaurant offering afternoon tea be so unprepared?? As for the food itself, the sandwiches were really good but there could’ve been more of them. The cakes were far too sweet, clearly not freshly baked and the scones were just plain stale. We hadn’t seen our waiter at all since he brought the food and we were desperate for more tea before tackling the scones, but luckily there must’ve been a shift change and a nice young lady took away our teapots to refill them. The final straw of this bizarre afternoon was that we were given THE SAME USED TEA BAGS back again!!! Honestly - there was hardly enough tea to colour the water!!! The problems with the reception and the waiter might have been new staff, the food was maybe all you can expect these days for £15, but in what universe is it acceptable to give customers used tea bags when they ask for more tea??? Utterly out of order. Needless to say, we don’t recommend this place and won’t be coming back.

Mi única crítica es que el restaurante estaba vacío. Es una pena porque la comida es muy buena y, aunque más caro que algunos sitios no es demasiado caro para un hotel. El interior es muy bonito, con grandes cojines cómodos en las sillas. We were treated to lunch at the Hilton Garden Inn, City Café for our anniversary, and we were very pleasantly surprised, not having heard of it before. On arrival we were greeted by very friendly, attentive staff who made us feel very welcome. The menu had a good selection of dishes and was very reasonably priced. The service was prompt and the food was delicious. We chose the Pan Seared Scallops for starters which was complimented by a tasty butternut puree. They were perfectly cooked and really fresh. A really good start. For my main I chose the pan fried chicken breast with wild mushrooms, baby leeks and a fondant potato. All was well cooked, well seasoned and very tasty. My wife decided to have a rump steak which was equally tasty and cooked perfectly to her request. To round off the meal we both chose the tart tatin which, once again was perfectly cooked. This restaurant was well worth the visit and considering its closeness to the bustling Brindley Place was an oasis of calm and quiet.

Having eaten here in the past we booked a table and were looking forward to our return visit. On arrival it was clear that the restaurant was set out for a private party, and we were told to wait a moment. A member of staff came to speak to us to explain that there was a private event being held there and they should never have taken our booking! So we were turned away. What surprised us the most was that although this was clearly an error on their part, there was no attempt to offer any sort of compensation to make up for it. We said we had travelled a long way to get there and this was just met with a shrug. The one star is a 'nod' to the food we've had here in the past. But after such poor service and cursory attitude we do not intend to visit here again.

The weather was very bad out so we decided to eat in the hotel restaurant which was not too busy so very little ambiance with "lift music" playing. There was only one server who seemed new. He never said no to anything asked but was not very good at the tasks at hand e.g tying the collar around the bottle of wine and just leaving the bottle on the table without pouring it. When our meal finally came he offered us extra mash potatoes but was never to be seen again. When someone finally came over we were 3/4 of the way through our meal. She was very apologetic and brought the mash over straight away y. As a gesture of goodwill she gave us a reduction on the bill. I shared the lamb shank and mash with my mother which wasn't great but edible. The raspberry creme brûlée was the best part of the meal.

This is the restaurant of the Hilton Garden Inn Birmingham. There are positives and there are negatives. Let's set the scene then deal with them.We stayed one night in the hotel having stayed here before when it was a City Inn and it was my wife's hotel of choice for work in Birmingham. I accept it is aimed primarily at the business market but having weekly commuted around Europe and America as a management consultant for many years I know what to expect for my (or my clients') money. The hotel review I will leave to her.We chose to eat in the hotel restaurant for simplicity. The fact it was effectively empty on a Friday evening should have started warning bells sounding. It didn't, sadly. The first course got off to a good start. Prawn cocktail is pretty difficult to mess up and they didn't, even adding an interesting chilli edge. The ham hock was apparently good but neither dish came with butter for the toast (interestingly not a nice wholewheat un-toasted bread for the prawn cocktail). My wife's main of salmon looked and tasted good. Her chips came as a surprise as she was not expecting them: perhaps not reading the menu properly. My pork belly was good although the potatoes were very cold and the string used in rolling the belly was still in evidence - not a good touch. No deserts but a cheeseboard. This was, and I can't be benevolent here, absolutely woeful. Tasteless generic cheeses straight out of the fridge (and precious little of them too) that I could have bettered in Sainsburys, bog standard water biscuits and the meanest piece of celery in Christendom. The price tag of £7.95 would be fine if some thought had been given to it but really it was insulting. We ordered coffee and asked what Irish whiskey was available. "Guinness whiskey" came the reply. Nearing melt-down by this point I asked for the real options - this took in the region of ten minutes: apparently Baileys and Kahlua count as Irish whiskey here. Coffee and Bushmills ordered resulted in another ten minute wait. Bearing in mind there were only two other diners (apart from a group I will come on to) this was surprisingly inept. At least my espresso was really an espresso and not just a strong coffee. The other group alluded to (foreign - Russian perhaps) proceeded to take a lot of pictures using the ceiling to bounce a fill flash off. It was incredibly invasive and despite asking staff to request they desist this request was not passed on and the very irritating group carried on trying to give us all flash induced fits. I can only assume they were spending a lot more than us in the hotel and therefore trumped us.We will not breakfast here as a result of this very poor experience. I did not tip as service was not great (and that hurts as I usually respect the effort made by waiting staff).I do not write vitriolic reviews for fun, or as a matter of course, a quick scan of my other reviews will evidence this, but if something is lacking I will say so. This place needs attention by management.I think my bottom line is that it was not a pleasant experience, we will under no circumstances repeat it and I would not recommend it to anyone who's friendship I valued. The one star is for the food that was good.

I went with a friend to have afternoon tea here one Sunday. It was quiet as anticipated with only one other couple in the cafe. We were sat by a window and the sofa I sat on was surprisingly comfortable. The decor is non-offencive but leaves one a little cold. The tea is twining bags but for the price I was not surprised. The service was friendly but not obtrusive. The scones were nice, you get a plain and raisin one, and you get plenty of clotted cream but not so much jam. Beware, the scones are large and you can easily fill up on them. I left part of mine and still could not eat all the cake. They give three small cakes that look like muffins. There was a chocolate, coffee walnut and one that looked like either lemon or vanilla. I only ate the coffee walnut as I was too full from the scones. The coffee walnut was perfectly acceptable so I assume the others were as well. My companion ate all of his so they must of been okay as he didn't say anything. The sandwiches were fine.At the end of the day I thought it perfectly acceptable for the price paid. A few changes such as loose leaf tea, smaller traditional scones and trading one or two of the cakes for something a little different could do wonders. However, I should imagine given the location and this being more business oriented they don't anticipate getting many takers so probably no need to change. If you are looking for a quiet time to spend with a friend just to enjoy some tea and cake you will probably find this place fits the bill as I did. There are certainly better places in Birmingham for afternoon tea, Le Tour comes to mind, but this place is slightly less expensive and so I did not compare it too close to the others.

We'd not booked a table and the name of the restaurant could be off putting. This restaurant is part of the Hilton hotel but feels like a separate property, not a dull hotel eatery. The furnishings are great. this restaurant has got it all. Great location, wonderful ambient , lovely background music, comfortable chairs and booths. Our waiter seated us came to take our order and immediately told us they were very busy and there may be a 35min wait for food. This suited us fine as we were no rush and at least we were warned. He asked if we wanted wine, we said two glasses of Rose, he then came back and said that if we had a bottle Pinot Grigio blush, they would charge us the same as Two large glasses, naturally we said yes please. The food was definitely incredibly slow in coming but we were offered bread rolls. I ordered the slow cooked belly pork and my partner ordered the Burger and Chips. The menu is not a huge, the wine list is just sufficient. The staff, the service is incredibly slow. Very young and inexperienced staff do not help. It looks like there is nobody in charge at times. You can choose from two or three courses - or can choose from the A La Carte menu which although more expensive than the set menu is still a very good price for what you getMy slow cooked belly pork was gorgeous, only thing was because we had eaten bread rolls whilst waiting, I was unable to finish my meal, and ended up having to leave most of my mast and cabbage, the Burger my partner was sufficient. Despite it not being perfect, we'd go back because although it was a little chaotic and slow, they did try to make amends. To the manager PLEASE get the young staff trained up.

We eat here last weekend after booking a room for valentines weekend. We were only in our seats a few seconds and we were asked if we were ready to order. We then got asked if we would like water which we didn't, the waiter didn't ask if we wanted any other drinks and after about 20 minutes of waiting hoping someone came over to ask what other drinks we would like my partner had to go over to the desk and ask for some drinks to be bought over. I ordered the rump of lamb I wasn't asked how I liked it cooked and it was a bit dry as it had no sauce and the home made chips were very dry too. My partner had the belly of pork which he enjoyed but there wasnt much on the plate. All in all the hotel is lovely and the room is lovely very nice and chilled and quiet but the restaurant really needs improving, waiting for drinks and staff not checking if everything is okay with our food its very poor especially when It wasn't even that busy and I saw quite a lot of different staff bringing food out. I think if your charging £20 for what is considered a cheap cut of meat i.e the rump you really need to put more on the plate.I would stay here again definitely just eat somewhere else

Wow. Not much went right with this dinner. First though, in fairness, wait staff were very responsive when I asked for anything--though I never knew who my assigned server was. Perhaps they do it differently here. someone took my drink order, another took food order, someone different brought my food. but no one checked back with me until I called someone over to order a second drink. I waited 15 minutes for that--by the time it came my martini on the rocks was not. I began my dinner experience by ordering a rocket, parm and balsamic salad. It arrived undressed and unappealing in a small soup bowl and at the same time as my entree. I had specifically asked for the salad as a starter. The penne with tomatoes, olives and basil pesto came with neither olives nor basil pesto. Pasta very overdone. Sent back in exchange for a mojo chicken sandwich. The sandwich was okay-though I would be lying if I said it had enough mojo to bring me back. I'll walk a couple blocks for much better fare.

The name of the restaurant could be off putting but don't worry about it. For me , this restaurant has got it all: great foot, nice location, wonderful ambient , lovely background music , comfortable chairs and fantastic service. The menu is not a huge one which I like so much. The wine list is just sufficient. Overall the cost of having a meal there represents a good value for money. This is one of few restaurant that you can have a meal with friends or your partner but also you can hear each other talking. I found everything right about this place apart from the name of course.

Recommended by a friend for my birthday having eaten there when the restaurant was part of The Mint hotel. Since then the Hilton has bought it out and turned into your 'typical' Hilton style and much like many hotels that have a restaurant attached. The restuarant was very quiet when we arrived, yet there were many tables that had not been cleared away with napkins and plates etc and so for the first 15mins of what was meant to be an intimate dining experience we sat between dirty tables. Our order was taken promptly and the three courses arrived in a timely manner although we had to chase a side order, which arrived 10mins later. The menu is not that exciting and our desserts were poor - the vanilla cheesecake lacked flavour and seemed shop brought buried under a mountain of blueberry compote. My husband's dessert was equally disappointing and not the cheapest at £5.50 each. Speaking with a waiter the hotel is now more suited to conference delegates and therefore busy in the day and with the addition of a breakfast buffet counter in the main restaurant, no longer an intimate or even lively dining affair.

My partner and I visited on Friday evening using a 2 for 1 on mains voucher from the Birmingham Post and we were impressed. The decor is fairly simple but bright and light and nice seating and booth/type feel.I had the salmon and noodles and it was delicious and my partner was pleased with his burger. The waitress was lovely, extremely friendly, helpful and welcoming. The only downside was the atmosphere as there was only us and one other diner! The waitress said it was often like that on an evening as even though the restaurant is part of the Hilton Hotel guests would go to other restaurants in the area, it sounds like lunch times are much busier. This is a shame as it is a nice restaurant and better than some of the others I've eaten in recently including Bank and Picollino.Give it a try, I hope more people start to use this restaurant!

I was disappointed that Hilton have removed the the previous excellent value Market menu which City Inn and MINT used to offer. The menu is now very limited and poor value for money.I had the risotto to start which was excellent, skate wing special main course which was underwhelming - one diner sent theirs back as it was incredibly boney and could have done with being filleted.Restaurant comparatively empty to that of old and lacks atmosphere - wonder whether the re-introduction of the previously better value market menu would fix that?

I went for my family for lunch on a quiet week day afternoon. Even though the restaurant was pretty much empty, the service was slow and it took a while for the drinks orders to come and the meals came staggered. As a waitress myself, the service was poor; no one specifically was allocated to our table, we had to hunt waiters down to take our orders etc and they generally didn't seem to know what they were doing. The food on the other hand was great-nice and fresh

I can honestly say that the afternoon tea at this restaurant was a real treat. With a choice of teas to choose from, a selection of finger sandwiches, TWO scones with jam and clotted cream, THREE small assorted cakes AND a small sorbet to refresh with. The scones were the best that I have ever had. I will definitely be going back again

City cafe is in side of Mint hotel -- near Novotel. You can not see the restaurant from Broad st, It is hidden from busy street -- complete tranquility. When I went there, they were renovating the part of restaurant - I guess they might have been finished by now. Food is always great - it is reasonably priced. Very good waiter service. I just can not complain about their food/service. Their set menu is a very good value for money. If you want a nice treat but without spending fortune, then that is the place to go. I just love going there for lazy Saturday afternoon for quick bite to eat -- and chilling out.

A modern restaurant, with comfortable seating, great decor and pleasant lcoation. I made the booking online very easily. A reminder email and phone call was made to me too, which was an impressive touch. The service at the restaurant was good (some staff didn't fully know the menu in much detail, but they sought clarification when needed). A concise food menu is available, but a large wuine list to choose from. The quality of the food is what I call fine dining. It's an ideal place to go before or after seeing a show at the Crescent Theatre.Overall, better than I expected and would highly recommend and re-visit in the future.

Five Family members went for a Lunch celebration eating mainly from the Market Menu which was very good however the service was disjointed, slow to take a drinks order and very slow to serve it, no one waiter seemed to be in charge of our table which resulted in poor service despite five different people attending the table.Sort the service and City Cafe will be outstanding.

New bar has only been open a few days and what a massive improvement on what the offering was before. The table service in the bar was first class and very friendly and professional. The Bartender was making a range of cocktails behind the bar which I kept noticing that all looked very good.I had a look at the A la carte menu and the daily market menu offering which i decided to take up so I then went through to the City Cafe which I have dined in many times before. The service is much approved and takes away the feel of hotel restaurant. With so many bars and restaurants around the area the new bar called 'Brindley Bar' and City Cafe is worth a visit and I will be back again soon.

We actually visited just before Christmas but that was no excuse as they weren't busy! I had explained that I have some food allergies and didn't want a rerun of our experience in Glasgow City Cafe, when I was ill all night, and I was assured that all would be ok.I won't go into detail but no information had been passed on to anyone on the night we had booked our table and the food was very poor, unseasoned or incredibly salty, quite awful wine that was kindly changed, and just not that imaginative. We used to eat at City Cafe a few years ago, when Jason was Chef and the food was stunning and Saxon was one of the waiters and the service was brilliant, what a shame that the restaurant which opened so well, with a Maitre D' from "Quatre Saisons" if you please, has just deteriorated so much. The manager, who was new was very helpful and apologetic but my partner refuses to ever eat here again. This follows a quick meal a couple of years ago that was also awful, mushy risotto, undercooked fish and a dessert with a beautiful sugar 'cage' that was solid, stuck to the plate and completely 'imprisioned' the bit I wanted to eat!Again, what a shame!

My husband and I have been to City Cafe many times and every time it's been as good, if not better than the last. Despite being part of a hotel, which often doesn’t bode well City Cafe is a stylish and pleasantly decorated restaurant, with standard tables, as well a plush sofa seating around the outsides. Every time we've been it's been quiet (although we do tend to eat out off-peak during mid week or Sundays) and we've had our pick of seating. For both dinner and lunch they have a set menu which is excellent value and compared to some of its competitors has a nice selection. You can choose from two or three courses - or can choose from the A La Carte menu which although more expensive than the set menu is still a very good price for what you get. We've typically paid circa £17 per head for lunch and £35-£40 per head for dinner - including a bottle of mid-priced wine. For this kind of money you get amazing starters and mains, both my husband and I have never been disappointed with the food and I'd go as far as to say that it's better than some of it's more expensive competitors in the area e.g. Bank, Cielo etc. In particular their starters seem to be particularly good. The one minor complaint I have with their menu is that their desert menu "tries to hard". That's to say that they tend to be complex with lots of flavours and accompaniments when in reality a simple but well done desert would probably serve better. They tend to be "nice but nothing special", unlike the rest of their courses which I find myself raving about every time. Like their food, the service is excellent generally. The staff are clearly well trained and are always friendly and keen to offer suggestions for dishes or suitable wines to accompany meals. I think that City Cafe is a hidden gem and one which is excellent value for excellent food. I would recommend, if like we did you decide this is one of your favourites you invest in the Tastecard as it offers a 50% off food for a table of two deal which is available every day except bank holidays, special days (e.g. valentines) and Saturdays.

This dining experience was superb. With attentive staff, a fabulous dining area, great food and a great price. Whilst portion sizes were not enormous the value for money was outstanding with a set menu of £21 for three courses (there is also a market menu which is even cheaper!). We had extra mash and cauliflower cheese but did not need it as the flavours and tastes were so lovely it more than made up for the lack of a bulging plate. To start I had 'trout two ways' which was fabulous and I had the duck breast for my main which was succulent and full of flavour. The wine list is extensive but the usual restaurant prices (cheapest bottle circa £16).i would definitely recommend this restaurant and cannot wait to go back.

Had dinner in this restaurant when the two for one offer was on and so glad I wasn't paying full price. Didn't have starters but the lamb on the mains sounded lovely: it was not. The portions were ridiculously small. I hate this"new" way of piling six chips up in a little heap. If this is gourmet you can keep it! We ordered dessert as we were still hungry and left the table to partake of our own cheese and biscuits which were considerably more substantial than the three biscuits and piece of stilton that my husband got for three fifty! Having said all of this, the hotel itself is excellent value for money and the breakfast was fantastic! In my view there are far better meals to be had on Brindley Place.

My partner and I visited for a special occasion, but found the restaurant dreadful. We weren't given a wine list and had to pester the waitress to actually be given a bottle once we'd ordered. Eventually we were given our wine 25 minutes after being seated. We were not informed of the specials, which led to confusion over the menu choices and meant I had to ask for a couple of minutes to peruse the menu again before ordering, which took another 10 minutes. Once the food arrived it was dreadful. My partner's belly pork starter was more suited to an all day breakfast, wheras my pigeon was well cooked - I wish I could say the same for the onion tartlet it was sitting on. As for the main course, my partner's steak resembled shoe leather and my lamb was frankly bizarre with a deep-fried 'braised shoulder' which was not advertised on the menu and a 'crushed potato' side which was a swirled garnish. Having finished the meal hungry we complained to the manager and were given compensation, however we will not be returning to see if the manager's assured 'one off' is actually true,

We had a 2 for 1 voucher so managed to have 3 courses for 2 people for £21.95. The childrens menu was a little expensive at £12.50 for 3 course but my daughter really enjoyed it. The service was attentive and the ambience was lovely. My husband and I always taste each others food so I can safely say that I tried and enjoyed everything on offer, including Belly pork/scallops and lamb to die for. We could not fail to enjoy our experience and the value for money was excellent

Pleasant restaurant, attentive staff, good atmosphere. Quite busy even at 7pm (Friday night)Great 2 for 1 January offer - 2 course meal with 2 glasses of ouse wine (1 small, 1 medium) came to £30.Started with pigeon breast and pork confit. Pork perfect, pigeon a bit chewy. Both mains (lamb and calfs liver) were perfect.Would return if there was another 2 for 1 offer.

We ate at the City Cafe on a Saturday night, we'd booked a table for 8pm. We had champagne in the bar first, the barman was lovely, but the atmosphere in the bar could be improved, the lighting is too bright for a start. It feels more like a cafe.Anyway..the couple in front of us asked for a table but were turned away as they were fully booked so we were glad we had booked. The tables are pretty well spaced with comfortable chairs, and the decor is pleasant, although not anything special. Our waitress came to take our order and immediately told us they were very busy and there may be a wait for food. This suited us fine as we were no rush and at least we were warned. She asked if we wanted wine, but we had no wine menu on our table so she had to go and search for one.We ordered white wine, but it came without a cooler and we had to ask twice for one.Little issues like this should be sorted out really, but the service was pleasant and we didn't really mind too much. The food was a little slow in coming but we were offered bread rolls twice while we waited. The weather on this night was absolutely appalling so we think the restaurant may have been busier than usual as people didn't want to go out, and room service may have been busy too. Despite the couple in front of us being turned away, 2 tables near us were never filled so they probably were trying to limit the numbers so they could cope, which is sensible. The food was lovely, no complaints there and without us saying a word, we were offered either a free drink or a discount for the delay. We chose a discount and were offered about 15% off our bill. We thought this was good, pro-active customer service. We weren't intending to complain anyway!Despite it not being perfect, we'd go back because although it was a little chaotic and slow, they did try to make amends without us asking them to.

I’ve ordered 2 soups, one of them was wrong one, 4 meatballs which I didn’t get, had to call them back for a few times for it and I had to wait another 40 mins to get them, the fries on the site was included but on the phone they said it’s not and I have to order them separately , I paid by card online then they cancelled the order, but they have taken the money, and then said I have to pay another £42 at the driver and for the first money that I paid I’ll get a refund. That’s how you lose your customers
