I will try and keep this review constructive and balanced Disappointing unremarkable meal for 2. Have eaten here previously several times but the menu has changed to a more traditional style- which was uninspiring and overpriced. Pub grub can still be home cooked and tasty.. We were the only diners on a Saturday evening ( 1 other table of 2 did arrive) I ordered steak. ‘medium rare’ it came out ‘very well done’ .. sent it back .. came back ‘rare/ blue’ … so I gave up… shouldn’t be that difficult to cook a steak correctly. Whilst I was waiting for my steak to be redone my partner had chicken & sweet chilli pizza which was soggy and bland . ( mostly eaten alone while I was waiting) We had already paid when ordering and no reduction offered ( would rather have had a decent meal) Didn’t bother with dessert and sad to say we won’t return. Waiting staff were pleasant

What a brilliant restaurant / pub. First of all we had a take away of fish and chips, just outstanding quality and then lent us the vinegar to take back to our cottage. We then had a fabulous meal with them the next day with our dog, they could not have been more helpful. The food and service was excellent. Update 2024, fabulous meal and such friendly service, for food was served quickly and with a smile. Highly recommend

We stayed here whilst walking the South West Coast Path. We though the inn was excellent. Our room was spacious and clean with all the facilities you would expect. The food was also excellent with a few unusual dishes. I was impressed that the staff seemed to be on top of everything, a sign of a well managed operation. I hope I'll be staying again.

Disappointed with our Sunday lunch Having visited before in June we looked forward to a repeat delicious meal It wasn't to be . Our Sunday lunch was a disappointment . Only 2 tiny roast potatoes tiny Yorkshire pud the chicken was the size of a budgie ,tasteless and tough . Veg nicely cooked thankfully The meal was cold and served on a cold plate Won't be returning again . Plenty of other options in the area so our custom is now lost

I wish I had taken a photo at the time but the sausages I ordered were only cooked on one side and the side was completely pink. The rest of the food was alright.

Went there for a drink and to check out possible eating another night. Asked young lady behind bar what gins they had (my eyesight not great) to be greeted with a sarcastic arm wave indicating all those behind her (no words came out). Slightly embarrassed I could see there was one called Plymouth gin - so asked for that.... Needless to say we had one drink and never went back. Tradesman's arms (just 150 yards up the road) were polar opposite - drank and dined there rest of the week.

We stayed one night. The room was very good. The place was quiet. The breakfast was very good. Full cooked breakfast along with variety of cereals, fruit etc. I was surprised to see fire door proper open. Bearing in mind there was serious fire in this village in last few years. I moved the door stop from the fire door so it could close when I went to bed but it was wedged open again the next morning. I recognise it could take quite a while for a fire engine to get here so this makes it even more important.

Good food, excellent service but both dates that we dined here (June and August 2024) were spoiled by the owner/landlord insisting that the doors to the outside are kept open all the time regardless of the weather. One customer closed the door and it was opened again within minutes. We, and several other diners left as soon as we had finished our meals. A real shame as this could be a busy, successful business.

This pub use to serve really good food, but oh dear ....it has changed and really is terrible. Previously on many occasions we have had beautifully cooked fish, meat and vegetarian meals all of which were extremely good. BUT.......The menu is now basic fodder, pretty much everything is fried. Which suggests everything is essentially taken from a freezer with nothing is actually fresh. No vegetables, any cullinery skills or finesse. They explained when taking the order they have changed the menu to that of a typical bar food pub!! but really it is boring stodge which leaves you feeling very nauseous.

This was a second visit to this pub, only 5 years after the first one and we were pleasantly surprised to see that little has changed in all that time! As other reviewers have said, no bookings are taken for tables so it's a game of luck if you get a table - we were lucky that it was just out of season so wasn't an issue for us. Staff were lovely, eager to ensure we had a good meal and happy to deal with our large hound! Food was excellent and good value. All in all, another successful visit - will make sure we're back again a lot quicker next time - 5 years is far too long!!

Whenever we have been in South Devon in recent years we have been to this lovely pub for a great meal from a balanced and varied menu. We were always assured of a lovely meal in a friendly atmosphere. What has happened? The warning bells rang when we phoned to book a table only to be told that it was not necessary. Bookings are only taken for Sunday lunch. We turned up just before 6.00 p.m. and there were no customers in the dining area. We took our choice of seats along with a menu from the bar area. The menu was very basic pub grub. Not at all like how it used to be. We waited for service but nobody came. So we left. We had no plans to visit this inn, but after driving around, we pulled up not knowing anything about this pub ,on entering we were greeted by a staff member who directed us to our table ,the first thing we noticed was how clean the kitchen looked while passing infact the whole pub was immaculate which put me at ease right away, we ordered two fish&chips, two gammons and one Moroccan vegetarian burger, my fish was excellent a decent piece of quality fish with chunky chips mushy peas and tartar sauce, really impressed. The gammons were cooked nicely with two fried eggs. How you liked them ,chunky chips and garden peas ,yet again excellent. Although vegetarian burgers aren't my first choice, my son really enjoyed it . We will visit again soon, if you are nearby it's well worth a visit you won't be disappointed.

This pub has been a favourite for the last few years, you literally couldn’t go wrong for a lovely meal and a friendly atmosphere. The menu was varied with evening specials which always delivered a high quality meal. What has happened?! There’s now a pool table where the locals used to sit and a dart board (tucked away) but the menu is something reminiscent of a Beefeater in the 1980’s! Not a salad to be found or anything that didn’t involve fried food and chips. I didn’t feel too good the next day if I’m honest, clearly the fried food didn’t agree with me and my friend had the same issue. We’ve come a long way in the last 40 years and so have our taste buds. There are some excellent pubs in the local area offering really great food, unfortunately I’ll be avoiding the food here in future. We stayed in this lovely Inn when travelling through Devon. We wanted a place to stay near salcombe that provided comfortable accommodation and good food. The Church House Inn exceeded our expectations and we are so pleased we booked here. The room was spotless, the bed was the most comfortable I have slept in for a long time and it was kitted out with a expresso coffee machine which was very much appreciated when waking up in the morning. We booked the restaurant and we were so pleased we had as it was very busy in the evening. The food was delicious and home made and the breakfast was 10 out of 10. We also can’t praise the staff enough. They were so friendly and kept checking if we were happy with everything and gave the best service. I don’t very often write reviews and we do go away a lot and stay in both hotels and B & B. I felt this place deserved a thumbs up from us as it was overall excellent. Thank you so much!

I booked the Church House Inn over 8 months before my daughter's wedding since it was opposite the church where she was to be married . Four weeks before the wedding they cancelled my booking due to 'ongoing issues with the room ' which meant it was not available. Next morning I went onto Booking.com and surprise surprise according to the site a room was available for the days they had cancelled. Yes they did return my deposit, yes they did offer me alternative accommodation at the Cricketers at Beesands ( a Pub which they also owned) but this was not suitable because of the distance from the church, certainly too far to walk in a wedding suit. Did the Church House Inn offer me more than an apology, well you can tell from this review the answer is Of Course Not. In fact the apology was in my view at best the least they could get away with. So as for my rating of the Church House Inn, I can only assume it was Terrible since they took a booking they could not honour. The cleanliness of the room etc etc well they did not honour the booking so perhaps they had something to hide, your guess is as good as mine. Would I stay there again well even if I was offered a free room the answer is of course No. Would I reccommend it? Well you pay your deposit and take the chance but personally I would look elsewhere.

Booked on 28/05/2021 for a table for dinner at 18:30 on 8/06/2021 and was told “no problem, all booked”. We arrived at 18:25 on 8/06/2021 and I overheard a waitress telling someone on the phone “no, we’re not serving food tonight” and thought I must’ve misheard but upon asking said waitress, she confirmed my fears and said “yeah, we don’t serve food on Mondays and Tuesdays” as if I should’ve known this. I explained that I called way back to book a table for dinner and she said “someone would’ve called you to tell you we weren’t serving food”. I thought this sounded odd and I can confirm that nobody had called or left a message (call logs don’t lie). We had driven 30 minutes to get there and had to drive 30 minutes back to our apartment with no other options for dinner (everywhere booked up), no apology at all and made to feel like it was my fault somehow. I have 3 questions… 1) Why take a dinner booking for an evening when you not serving food? 2) If you have kitchen opening times advertised online (Google) then why do you advertise as open when you’re not? 3) Why did your waitress try to make me feel like it was my fault for not taking a call, when no call was ever made to me? Really disappointed and felt very let down.

We stayed for a night over the bank holiday weekend and had a great experience. The rooms are named after parts of the adjoining church and I’m sure we would not have been the first to say ‘take me to the Altar’ to each other , what I enjoyed more though was the key fob said Alter - meaning you can change your mind no doubt . From arrival and being shown to our room, to the service at dinner and breakfast and settling up we found all staff members to be friendly and to know what they are doing. It makes such a difference, the only reason the review is a four is that we asked three staff members for a wine list before it came (one twice). The food was lovely, interesting specials and priced just right. The breakfast was plentiful and all good quality ingredients, well cooked.Would certainly recommend both here and their second site The Cricket Inn at Bee Sands nearby where we stayed a couple of years ago.

Amazing food! Lovely atmosphere. Great selection of food options including interesting vegetarian options, anyone unsure of veggie food should try the mushroom kiev😋. All of our bubble enjoyed our food, which was perfectly cooked (the different steaks were all cooked as asked). Definitely recommend.

Fantastic pub in small village, nice fresh decor and really friendly staff. Food was amazing - Rack of Ribs for me and Ribeye Steak for my wife, nothing at all to complain about. Food quality and portion size was perfect. We would highly recommend this place for a drink or a delicious meal. I am sure that you will not be disappointed.

My family of 6 were treated to a exceptional Sunday lunch at this village pub. We all had the traditional lunch. The choice of pork, beef or chicken was good and plenty of veg to follow. Wonderful flavours and good portions. A good selection of puddings kept us all happy. Would definitely recommend and will visit again when next in the area.

I was so pleased with the choice of this pub for lunch. They were fully Covid compliant with one-way system, sanitiser and cutlery in sealed packets. The food (Shepherds Pie and Portobello mushrooms Kiev) was excellent, truly good food. Genuinely could not fault the food in terms of quality or presentation. Well worth a return visit.

Has been refurbished since our last visit a few years ago now & what a transformation! Food was amazing-new chef so keen to try out the menu! Wine list smallish but from a non mainstream supplier meant great quality and inexpensive, lovely Pinot Noir! French onion soup was the best I’ve had & burger was to die for, 4 of us had different dishes and it was all amazing. No room for pud as stuffed!! Portion sizes we very generous! Well done CH we will be back!

After constantly being disappointed with poor quality burgers the church house is a ray of sunshine. Awesome homemade burgers from offcuts if steak from their own in house butchers. Awesome.

I veered slightly inland whilst walking the SW coast path and stayed one night at this gem in Stokenham. Really comfortable room, recently refurbished. Gorgeous shower room. Dinner was great too. Very strict adherence to Covid guidelines. Wouldn't hesitate to stay here again if in the area.

We stayed nearby in September and visited on several occasions for drinks and food. My husband had fish and chips and he said they were the nicest he'd had in years. The food was presented very well (cutlery and napkins came in sealed bags) and the pub itself is spotless. Staff friendly and helpful. I would definitely visit again if in the area. The pub also offers accommodation.

Stayed here for one night lovely little pub rooms very nice and cosy unfortunately couldn’t watch tv as there wasn’t a remote and couldn’t use the shower as the button was missing of it which definitely would of been noticed on cleaning … the carpet in stairs were quite dirty and the people I didn’t find very welcoming sadly

Christmas lunch for 12 of us. Pre ordered from a balanced and varied seasonal menu that included fish and vegetarian options. Excellent value and we were very well looked after. Exceptional selection of well cooked Vegetables, recipe for the red cabbage please . Some of us were disappointed that we didn't have room for a desert ! This is a family owned proper pub with helpful competent staff. Parking right opposite but payment by card challenged some of us oldies.

Limited opening times, No food so asked out of curtesy if grandson could eat a snack. Was told no but to eat outside in the garden which had a closed sign on the gate, so had eat in the smoking area. Didn't feel particularly welcome. No alternative snack was offered. Wasn't very accommodating, we were staying local and would have returned for a meal but they said closed Monday and Tuesday and we would need to book if wanted to return. I would advise anyone to give this pub a a miss as there are much better pubs in the area
