We were staying locally and were out searching for food, then we came across this gem of a place, plenty of parking a huge field with a park (that my kids loved)food was absolutely sublime staff were very freindly, we are back down that way next year and already can't wait to get something else off the menu

Went there for a drink and to check out possible eating another night. Asked young lady behind bar what gins they had (my eyesight not great) to be greeted with a sarcastic arm wave indicating all those behind her (no words came out). Slightly embarrassed I could see there was one called Plymouth gin - so asked for that.... Needless to say we had one drink and never went back. Tradesman's arms (just 150 yards up the road) were polar opposite - drank and dined there rest of the week.

We stayed one night. The room was very good. The place was quiet. The breakfast was very good. Full cooked breakfast along with variety of cereals, fruit etc. I was surprised to see fire door proper open. Bearing in mind there was serious fire in this village in last few years. I moved the door stop from the fire door so it could close when I went to bed but it was wedged open again the next morning. I recognise it could take quite a while for a fire engine to get here so this makes it even more important.

Good food, excellent service but both dates that we dined here (June and August 2024) were spoiled by the owner/landlord insisting that the doors to the outside are kept open all the time regardless of the weather. One customer closed the door and it was opened again within minutes. We, and several other diners left as soon as we had finished our meals. A real shame as this could be a busy, successful business.

Lovely pub in the Devon countryside with a beautiful outside garden area. This place had a good mixture of new and old features with a modern touch for the decor, service was good and food came out quickly. We came into the pub late, but they put our orders on, and we left happy and full. Kids and dogs are all welcome, with a resident dog roaming around freely.

This pub use to serve really good food, but oh dear ....it has changed and really is terrible. Previously on many occasions we have had beautifully cooked fish, meat and vegetarian meals all of which were extremely good. BUT.......The menu is now basic fodder, pretty much everything is fried. Which suggests everything is essentially taken from a freezer with nothing is actually fresh. No vegetables, any cullinery skills or finesse. They explained when taking the order they have changed the menu to that of a typical bar food pub!! but really it is boring stodge which leaves you feeling very nauseous.

This was a second visit to this pub, only 5 years after the first one and we were pleasantly surprised to see that little has changed in all that time! As other reviewers have said, no bookings are taken for tables so it's a game of luck if you get a table - we were lucky that it was just out of season so wasn't an issue for us. Staff were lovely, eager to ensure we had a good meal and happy to deal with our large hound! Food was excellent and good value. All in all, another successful visit - will make sure we're back again a lot quicker next time - 5 years is far too long!!

Whenever we have been in South Devon in recent years we have been to this lovely pub for a great meal from a balanced and varied menu. We were always assured of a lovely meal in a friendly atmosphere. What has happened? The warning bells rang when we phoned to book a table only to be told that it was not necessary. Bookings are only taken for Sunday lunch. We turned up just before 6.00 p.m. and there were no customers in the dining area. We took our choice of seats along with a menu from the bar area. The menu was very basic pub grub. Not at all like how it used to be. We waited for service but nobody came. So we left. There are some excellent pubs in the local area offering really great food, unfortunately I’ll be avoiding the food here in future.

The gammons were cooked nicely with two fried eggs. How you liked them ,chunky chips and garden peas ,yet again excellent. Although vegetarian burgers aren't my first choice, my son really enjoyed it . We will visit again soon, if you are nearby it's well worth a visit you won't be disappointed.

This pub has been a favourite for the last few years, you literally couldn’t go wrong for a lovely meal and a friendly atmosphere. The menu was varied with evening specials which always delivered a high quality meal. What has happened?! There’s now a pool table where the locals used to sit and a dart board (tucked away) but the menu is something reminiscent of a Beefeater in the 1980’s! Not a salad to be found or anything that didn’t involve fried food and chips. I didn’t feel too good the next day if I’m honest, clearly the fried food didn’t agree with me and my friend had the same issue. We’ve come a long way in the last 40 years and so have our taste buds. There are some excellent pubs in the local area offering really great food, unfortunately I’ll be avoiding the food here in future. We stayed in this lovely Inn when travelling through Devon. We wanted a place to stay near salcombe that provided comfortable accommodation and good food. The Church House Inn exceeded our expectations and we are so pleased we booked here. The room was spotless, the bed was the most comfortable I have slept in for a long time and it was kitted out with a expresso coffee machine which was very much appreciated when waking up in the morning. We booked the restaurant and we were so pleased we had as it was very busy in the evening. The food was delicious and home made and the breakfast was 10 out of 10. We also can’t praise the staff enough. They were so friendly and kept checking if we were happy with everything and gave the best service. I don’t very often write reviews and we do go away a lot and stay in both hotels and B & B. I felt this place deserved a thumbs up from us as it was overall excellent. Thank you so much!

I booked the Church House Inn over 8 months before my daughter's wedding since it was opposite the church where she was to be married . Four weeks before the wedding they cancelled my booking due to 'ongoing issues with the room ' which meant it was not available. Next morning I went onto Booking.com and surprise surprise according to the site a room was available for the days they had cancelled. Yes they did return my deposit, yes they did offer me alternative accommodation at the Cricketers at Beesands ( a Pub which they also owned) but this was not suitable because of the distance from the church, certainly too far to walk in a wedding suit. Did the Church House Inn offer me more than an apology, well you can tell from this review the answer is Of Course Not. In fact the apology was in my view at best the least they could get away with. So as for my rating of the Church House Inn, I can only assume it was Terrible since they took a booking they could not honour. The cleanliness of the room etc etc well they did not honour the booking so perhaps they had something to hide, your guess is as good as mine. Would I stay there again well even if I was offered a free room the answer is of course No. Would I reccommend it? Well you pay your deposit and take the chance but personally I would look elsewhere.

Booked on 28/05/2021 for a table for dinner at 18:30 on 8/06/2021 and was told “no problem, all booked”. We arrived at 18:25 on 8/06/2021 and I overheard a waitress telling someone on the phone “no, we’re not serving food tonight” and thought I must’ve misheard but upon asking said waitress, she confirmed my fears and said “yeah, we don’t serve food on Mondays and Tuesdays” as if I should’ve known this. I explained that I called way back to book a table for dinner and she said “someone would’ve called you to tell you we weren’t serving food”. I thought this sounded odd and I can confirm that nobody had called or left a message (call logs don’t lie). We had driven 30 minutes to get there and had to drive 30 minutes back to our apartment with no other options for dinner (everywhere booked up), no apology at all and made to feel like it was my fault somehow. I have 3 questions… 1) Why take a dinner booking for an evening when you not serving food? 2) If you have kitchen opening times advertised online (Google) then why do you advertise as open when you’re not? 3) Why did your waitress try to make me feel like it was my fault for not taking a call, when no call was ever made to me? Really disappointed and felt very let down.

We stayed for a night over the bank holiday weekend and had a great experience. The rooms are named after parts of the adjoining church and I’m sure we would not have been the first to say ‘take me to the Altar’ to each other , what I enjoyed more though was the key fob said Alter - meaning you can change your mind no doubt . From arrival and being shown to our room, to the service at dinner and breakfast and settling up we found all staff members to be friendly and to know what they are doing. It makes such a difference, the only reason the review is a four is that we asked three staff members for a wine list before it came (one twice). The food was lovely, interesting specials and priced just right. The breakfast was plentiful and all good quality ingredients, well cooked.Would certainly recommend both here and their second site The Cricket Inn at Bee Sands nearby where we stayed a couple of years ago.

The Church House Inn is a country pub that has a very good restaurant. Covid precautions are very good. Customer service was good and the food was of a high quality and good value for money. The lamb shank madras is highly recommended.

Booked in whilst staying at another local establishment. Covid measures in place were very reassuring and they were able to over me many GF options including GF fish and chips which was delicious. Staff were lovely and friendly too. In all a lovely evening and we would definitely visit again if in the area.

After constantly being disappointed with poor quality burgers the church house is a ray of sunshine. Awesome homemade burgers from offcuts if steak from their own in house butchers. Awesome.

I veered slightly inland whilst walking the SW coast path and stayed one night at this gem in Stokenham. Really comfortable room, recently refurbished. Gorgeous shower room. Dinner was great too. Very strict adherence to Covid guidelines. Wouldn't hesitate to stay here again if in the area.

We stayed nearby in September and visited on several occasions for drinks and food. My husband had fish and chips and he said they were the nicest he'd had in years. The food was presented very well (cutlery and napkins came in sealed bags) and the pub itself is spotless. Staff friendly and helpful. I would definitely visit again if in the area. The pub also offers accommodation.

We had several meals at the Church House Inn in August and early September. One with family and the rest were as a couple. We were well looked after and the food was excellent. The atmosphere is good but my personal view when it comes to atmosphere is that I prefer their sister pub The Cricket Inn at Beesands. Having said this both come very highly recommended and you will not be disappointed with either venue.

Lovely family meal, great place with fab food and excellent service. We had to book ahead, the place has been refurbished to a high standard since our last visit and the interior was lovely. Food was great and service was fast even though it was really busy.

Good service and helpful with CV19 guidance, not overbearing. Fish and chips for me, Thai mussels for my wife, both very good. Fish cooked in clean oil, HURRAH, which is becoming a rarity. Pity the chips weren't real spuds but reconstitued from spuds and made to look like chips.Mussels were very good and bread was indeed sourcdough.

Really beautiful pub set in beautiful surroundings. Was lovely popping in for a drink and watching the Tele screen which showed old pictures taken in the village and surrounding areas, brought memories back to my Dad who was brought up in the area.

If you are looking for great food and a warm welcome this pub is a real gem. The food portions were very generous and everything very good quality with a great deal of care taken to implement social distancing measures. What really stood out was the service as all the staff were super friendly and polite a rare find these days!Prices are a bit on the high side for a pub but the overall experience was worth the price- highly recommend

Fantastic Sunday roast rib of beef with all the trimmings and a few pints of local ale. Very clean and safe with friendly efficient service (our dog was welcomed and even given his own bowl of water). Food was all good quality, freshly cooked to a very high standard and absolutely delicious! Would definitely recommend, in fact we are looking for another opportunity to return this week - wonderful!

Really looking forward to this but the food was not ok and the service comical. Staff friendly enough but frequently forgot important things (cheese on burger, water for table). Had to send one dish back and the burger that came was pretty rare - a good vet would have got it back on its feet! Curry was bland and the local Devon ale needs to start again. Lovely beer garden though

A very busy pub with a great local reputation. We booked for Sunday night and it did not disappoint. Great service - despite their being a very large party in the restaurant - we were not forgotten. Pork chop as a special was delicious and cooked to perfection. Having eaten all over the country I would recommend to locals and visitors to this area.
