The best smash-burger I've ever tasted. In an amazing 13th Century building. In a quiet village in Devon. Most unexpected. The rest of the food for our small party was excellent. The server very accommodating of my elderly parents. Locals too. Ignore churlish comments about the pricing; food this good should cost a little bit extra. I'm surprised the place isn't booked out every weekday, let alone weekend. Eating here is a must.

Nice country pub, in-fact it’s one of our locals. It’s a real shame the new landlord has turned it into overpriced restaurant. Now by far the most expensive pub in the area. If you want to buy a meal you have to pay extra for the vegetables and chips on the side making it outrageously expensive. The bar snacks are also overpriced for what you get. Yes the price of drinks has gone up too, London prices to match the food. So a pint of ale for instance is somewhere in the region of £5.90. If you want half a pint of Ale it will cost £3.10. I was told by the landlord yesterday this was to take into account the washing up of half glass in the dish washer.

Over priced food, London prices on the beers to match, add 20p extra if you want half a pint, which is considered washing up tax. £3.10 for half a pint of Ale! You can’t be serious!

Wow! This was an amazing treat - a birthday dinner for four. The Inn itself is so atmospheric: fourteenth century architecture, blazing fires, candlelit tables and the warmest of welcomes as you enter. Tim Blanchard's hand-written menu is so thoughtfully put together and caters for all tastes. We enjoyed beautiful starters [I didn't share any of my mackerel and fennel salad - too delicious to part with] and mains of scouse [the very best inside and outside Liverpool], confit of trout, and pork chops from the Specials Menu. Pear sorbet, damson ice-cream ... a wonderful experience from the get-go. Can't rate it highly enough. *****

Very interesting menu mostly exquisitely executed. Clearly everything home made . Doesn't have a kids menu but they seemed happy to accommodate a slightly picky 7 year old. Pork scatchings were genuinely incredible. Stuffed pig trotter tasty and intense. Pro Schnitzel huge but very tasty. If you want a big standard pub or chain pub this isn't the place for you, if you want really good interesting food in an ancient unique location then this is well worth a trip.....

This is the second time we have visited. First time back in September, and then yesterday during storm Daragh. I don't often write reviews because a place has to be either exceedingly good or exceeding bad. As much as I know this place will gain a reputation worthy of the food and service and therefore make future bookings difficult, this place totally deserves it. If you want something a little out of the ordinary that you won't find elsewhere then this is the place. The menu changes daily and the chef knows his stuff and puts out some ballsy dishes. Last night was Devilled Chicken hearts for a starter followed by oven roasted pork chop. Previous visit also had a pork chop but with a rendered pig's trotter (sadly no actual trotter). The OH had celeriac soup and Baked Stinking Bishop. Desserts were also home made and individual. Poached quince on clotted cream. Front of house was young Rachel. Very professional, very pleasant and very attentive (also very attractive). She was also very engaging, happy to chat about food and what not. She also had an excellent understanding of the chef's dishes. This makes such a difference and this place deserves to be popular. I really can't sing their praises enough. It's just a shame we have to come all the way from Kent! We will never not come here all the time it is as it is. Value wise, it's not cheap but it's affordable it if you want a lovely meal in a beautiful and authentic setting. Well done team (just remember to always find space for us).

Google has this down as a hotel, but we visited it as a restaurant - and what a restaurant it was! We heard they had a new chef owner and they did a fantastic job, with some delicious food. I had the pork chop accompanied with some cavallo nero, and this was lovely, although my own highlight was the mash I ordered on the side - this was splendid and so tasty to the point I wished I had a whole bowl of it! A really lovely meal in the Devon countryside, we'd strongly recommend.

We came here to eat on a recommendation about ten days ago and were not disappointed. The place has a lovely traditional feel and manages to act as both a pub and an excellent restaurant, something that's quite hard to find these days. The food was superb, both starters and mains, with some great twists on traditional pub food. The steak and kidney pudding and chicken pie in particular were wonderful. We wish the new chef owner the best of luck with this venture - local people and visitors are very lucky that the Church House Inn exists!

A group of friends had lunch here yesterday, and whilst the food was mostly good the service and front of house was appalling. The food is very expensive, but the new owner needs to tackle the really bad front of house service. A lot of training needs to be done if he intends this to be a fine dining destination. The dessert menu was very limited, and when I asked what came with the Walnut cake, i was told "Cake and walnuts, which was insulting and totally unnecessary. We do not expect an apology but neither will we be going back. I wish the new owner good luck, but he needs staff that have had some training in customer service !!!

Incredible food. Really blown away by the quality of the cooking. Smoked eel starter on rye bread and cucumber salad was to die for. I could eat it every day. Mussels cider and leek sauce were also epic. Good sized portion and just delicious. Sirloin sharer was incredible and cooked to perfection, béarnaise sauce of dreams. Duck breast was the best I’ve ever had (and have lived in France for many years) the green bean olive salad it was served with was divine. All topped off with some homemade ice cream, flavours unique and creative. Chef (who has recently taken over the business) came out and spoke to most tables, he’s super talented and wish him all the best. Popped in for some lunch on a Sunday before we went off for a walk. The Church House is an absolutely beautiful building. 13th century or some such. A great example of a proper British country pub. The beer is kept in great condition and was all high quality stuff with some beer on cask from a local brewery only a stones throw away in Totnes. The staff were friendly and very welcoming. The menu has a small selection of meals which are clearly carefully thought out, and looking at our meals and those on other tables, the ingredients were of very high quality. The menu is hand written and must be new most days. My partner and I are both vegetarian so had the veggie option which was super tasty. If you're after a Toby Carvery this isn't the place for you. If you want something different, a culinary experience and menu options you haven't had before in a pub, then I'd recommend the Church House Inn :) 👍

The Church House has a new chef patron - and Tim is a fantastic cook. I had one of the best meals of 2024 there last Friday night - and who should also be there that night but Mitch & Ben Tonks of the Sea Horse in Dartmouth - and the Rockfish chain. Tim changes the menu regularly and its always innovative and full of surprises. I think we are very lucky to have him running the pub, and clearly from the growing number of diners, his reputation is already growing around South Devon. He's worked at the Michelin starred St John in Clerkenwell in the past, and of course at the wonderful Sea Horse, so his credentials are immaculate. We live in the village, just 60 metres away, so Tim's arrival is saving us a fortune in taxi fares! Up there with the very best in the South Hams.

Great little village pub with restaurant which we believe has recently been taken over. Visited on a midweek night and relatively late so was quiet. Extremely friendly staff and also very welcoming locals who came to chat and made a fuss of our dogs. Food was excellent, because it was quiet got the opportunity to chat with the chef who is clearly very passionate and knowledgable and committed to cooking locally sourced seasonal food so the menu can change on a daily basis. I had crispy ox cheek starter and my partner had confit garlic we shared these as we struggle to decide what to have as actually we would have had all of the starter's. Squid with chickpeas for main for me it was a toss up between this and the veggie option which was courgettes and butter beans. Everything was absolutely delicious. For pud we shared a raspberry and almond custard, fresh raspberries, toasted almonds and the most delicious homemade cold vanilla custard, it was almost too pretty too eat, tasted even better than it looked.. I will most definitely be back

Grossly over priced sunday lunch consisting of fatty cold beef, thin weak gravy, one yorkshire pudding, 2 roasted carrots and 3 roast potatoes with and the Side of greens was a plate of green luke warm wilted cabbage and also tried to charge £8 for 4 thin sausages for our daughter. Gorgeous, cosy, friendly, great food. I phoned and left a voicemail to book a last minute table here and the landlord rang back to confirm the booking and let me know how to safely get to the pub, and park! Loved that considering my need for planning! Arrived and walked in to the most beautiful gorgeous rustic village pub greeted by a friendly smile from the landlady. Very welcoming pub. The pub was nicely busy for a quiet January evening with the majority of tables taken up by friends, locals, families and also couples eating and drinking. The atmosphere was lovely… Two log burners were alight which kept it nice and cosy! We were served drinks and shown to our reserved table within 2 minutes of arriving. The food… just delicious!! I was over the moon to see the vegan options, of which I couldn’t choose between the peanut curry or mushroom stroganoff, I went with the latter and I wasn’t disappointed. Home cooked and flavoursome. Good sized portions, and the omnivores in the group were very pleased with their Beef Ragu, Salmon and also Pork steak! Followed by desserts .,, including a chocolate and cherry vegan brownie! I had a feeling this place was going to be a gem as I read the reviews, prior to booking… so I wasn’t disappointed! As I walked in she looked up from her book while sat at the bar and begrudgingly got up to serve me a pint, al the while making me feel as if I’d been an imposition to her.

I visited Church House Inn very sadly to attend a wake. Despite these circumstances I was deeply impressed by the level of service and genuine kindness the staff showed to ensure that we had a pleasant experience at this pub.

Whilst on a short break away with our two (not so well behaved) dogs, we had been out walking for the morning and decided to try and have a meal in the lovely garden area. Went in to pick up menus and the lovely ladies said it would be best to sit indoors, in case it rains. I explained the situation about our two dogs (they don't like other dogs so much) but they insisted we come sit inside, sit at a table set up in the corner, away from other dogs and even get them some treats! Lucky they didn't catch sight of any other dogs and were well behaved and we got to enjoy the best meal out in peace and quiet! Delicious and great customer service- can't beat it!

Had enjoyable family meal here during recent holiday. This pub dates back to the 13th century and has great character, with old beams and a huge fire place. I would visit it again for the interior alone. The pub is in the village of Harberton next to an old 14th/15th century church. The staff were very pleasant and the beer and food were good. Rump of lamb course was excellent and my family were raving about the chocolate brownie dessert. I had the rhubarb and summer fruits pavlova (please add cream to this dish and then you would have a real winner). Good veggie options as well (Brazilian veggie curry good according to the veggies in the family). Recommended.

Just returned from a two night stay at church house inn. Everyone made us really welcome, very dog friendly. The room was very clean, the meals in the hotel are freshly prepared and good value for money. Sunday evening John also opens up the pizza oven and serves various pizzas in a relaxed atmosphere. I would recommend a stay at church house inn, the location is ideal for traveling to Totnes, Dartford and surrounding area. One thing to note the roads around the village are narrow.

Searching for that "proper" pub and this ticks all the boxes. Wonderful ancient property where bar hasn't become a "restaurant" whilst serving good food. Lovely courtyard garden. Very pleasant landlord who gave us the history. We shall return.

We had a pre-concert dinner for four and we all chose the same dish. Lamb rump with Bubble and Squeak. Absolutely delicious £14.95 pretty reasonable, it came with a nice selection of vegetables which were cooked just right. Desserts were alittle more pricey at £5.95 but were nicely presented and tasty too. Service was quick, friendly and efficient. Everything you could want for a great dinner.

I made a return visit to this pub on Tuesday with my wife as we love the food so much here, the chefs are very talented and it’s always great grub. This topped with a roaring fire at one end the gorgeous old building makes it a great retreat in winter and you always receive a warm welcome from the owner.

We live in the South Hams, but had never ventured into Harberton - we've missed out. Approaching this medieval longhouse on an autumn evening, its line of fairy-lights against its huge stained doors and whitewashed walls caught us in its spell at first sight. The carpeted open plan interior, oak beams and roaring wood-burners make it very homely, together with the fact over a dozen villagers crowded the bar area!

Excellent service in, I'm pleased to call, our local village pub, dating back to the 13thC. Friendly staff, great atmosphere and very cosy and welcoming with the wood burners blazing. Large, varied menu with plenty to choose from and to satisfy all palates. Good portion sizes too so couldn't manage dessert! Great choice of beers, spirits and wines too.

A very nice Inn situated next to the Harberton Church. We were told that the Inn was built to accommodate the builders of the church, serve the food and ale. The Inn was ran by munches.

I've known this pub for a few years under different landlords. My partner and I needed somewhere to stay recently near Totnes and the only room we could find was at the Church House. A good choice.

This pub has been my local for 26 years and always a favourite providing beer and food through washing machine floods, powercuts, different landlords and seven different houses, (including one in France- still called it my local). MLW and her mother followed me and the little dog into the pub last night for gourmet burger/ pork loin / lamb rump all very nice with excellent service and no leftovers for the little dog nor room for pudding.

Stopped here on our way home and decided to have lunch. A good choice of main meal roasts. I went for the beef whilst my husband had the lamb shoulder. Didn't take long to come out - was hot and wonderful. My husband reckoned it was the best lamb he'd had! I'd already looked at the dessert menu, but was too full to indulge. Very friendly staff and had a great pint of real ale. Would definitely recommend.

Not sure why I like this place so much really. It’s a fair walk, there is no guarantee of fresh crab availability (greedy octopuses not withstanding) and it’s not the most cost effective efficient way of purchasing a sandwich. Having said that, it’s friendly, the food is superb and you can get a decent coffee or bottled tipple. I’ll keep coming back. Love it! The views are fabulous too.
