Britannia @ The Beach in South Hams

Lovely place for lunch, great atmosphere and genuinely friendly team. Very good value for money and while you cannot tell from the outside it is a cosy space inside.

Really fab option right on the beach; we were there on a blustery October day for delicious crab sandwiches and amazing views. Serves alcohol too, but a bit early for us! Recommended.

Great lunch. Amazing setting and food. My husband had brill at a brill price. Our son had an amazing quantity of scallops, again amazing quality. I had juicy mussels. Altogether fab. Would highly recommend.

Fish wasn't particularly nice, and we think the sausage gave us food poisoning, as it tasted a bit off and the only unwell person was the only person to eat the sausage, and we've eaten everything else the same. The servers were very nice though, and service was quick. Chips had big portions, but everything was on the tad expensive side.

Nestled away on the seafront at Beesands is this lovely little beach restaurant and takeaway. Its good to see Beesands is on the 'up' and has improved considerably since we last visited 2 years ago, and this has probably been helped by the opening of the new improved Britannia on the Beach. At long last The Cricketers no longer have the monopoly and decent competition at this step back in time beach village. The 'regular' menu is a bit basic and really if you're making an effort to go here, you'll want to have fresh fish. The 'specials' board did not disappoint and we had the fresh grilled haddock and the Chef's special fish pie. Neither disappointed, well presented and large portions. The fish pie was excellent, with scallops and haddock. It no longer allows BYO bottle and now charges corkage, but the house wine is reasonably priced. However, its worth noting the takeaway food menu does offer more choice. If your staying in Beesands in a holiday cottage, eating at the Britannia is a must. We were staying locally but wouldn't rave about it and drive miles to go, but its a good place to eat in you're in the area.

Fab seafood great crab sandwiches, amazing fish chips and curry sauce and mushy peas. Great scampi too. Its a shame they haven't had the tempura samfire

A disappointing lunch.I had the plaice which was over cooked and came with none of the usual extras. I know they have had problems recruiting staff and it certainly showed in the shoddy presentation. It just isn’t the little gem it used to be.

Surely one of the most wonderful coastal locations in glorious Devon? Perfect fish and chips. The fish. The batter. Most importantly the chips! Generous crab sandwiches in freshest bread. Doggy friendly. BYO. Takeaway option. Reservation policy continues to confuse.🇬🇧🇳🇿

Britannia at the Beach is a firm favourite for our trips to South Devon. Their Scampi & Chips is exceptional and very fresh. During our most recent visit this week we enjoyed the friendly service and returned for ice cream after a long walk.

Best fries ever. Cozy place by the beach, and warm people. We escaped from the rain here with our dog and they were lovely to welcome us. The food was delicious, I had a sandwich with lovely salad and we ordered extra skinny fries because one serving wasn’t enough. Thank you

Has always been a favourite but our portion size felt very mean for the price on the last visit. Still delicious and a wonderful setting.

This is a lovely, cozy little restaurant, right by the beach. We arrived late for lunch - at 2.15 (they were due to close at 2.30) as we’d been for a coastal walk, but we received a very warm welcome from the waitress (& lady who seemed to be running things). The food was simply delicious. I had the fish pie and it was probably the best fish pie I’ve ever had!!! A warm and relaxed atmosphere. Excellent service. Great wine. We took our dog too, so dog friendly!!! I would thoroughly recommend.

Great food, lots of seating. Portions were filling and definitely worth the money paid.

Emailed 2 weeks ago to request a booking for a birthday. Told they didn't do bookings. Got down for when it opened but they had reserved signs on the tables. They said they'd ring us when table available but after an hour we walked back down and they were letting walk ins through the door. Very disappointed.

We arrived at the restaurant at 2.30, unfortunately it was just closing, (reopening again at 5.30,) so we had fish and chips from the take away section, we were given a very generous portion, all very enjoyable , so good value for money. We finished off with white chocolate and raspberry ice cream which was absolutely delicious, and again not overly priced. We will certainly be returning and would recommend.

Food was eatable. We had the seafood platter for two. Unfortunately almost everything was battered. It was very overpriced for what you get. Once is enough for us. The waitress was friendly.

We came here 5 years ago for our 10th wedding anniversary we had fab food great choice, great service and great atmosphere . Fast forward 5 years and I had mussels to start and my husband had scallops, starters were good. The main we had fish pie, to be honest I make it better. It was mediocre at best and the prices are not cheap, sad to say disappointed compated to our first vist. I can fault the service although when I left most of the fish pie I was not asked if everything was ok.

Best fish restaurant in the area. Very small, little table, but very comfortable. Excellent food, but please reserve well in advance as Britannia is always fully booked. It is also possible to bring your own wine. That's how we did it - no problem.

Absolutely fantastic takeaway fish and chips. Just perfect, the most beautiful fish with crispy batter washed down with a very nice French rose. Sat in the sunshine watching the waves come in. A truly wonderful afternoon.

A lovely little place that does eat in or take out. We opted to takeaway so we could sit in our van and watch the stormy seas in this secluded little part of Devon. The food was really tasty and the fish (from the fish and chips option) was full of a few bones with my husband quite liked as he said you could tell it was fresh and not over processed! I'd definitely eat here again.

Visited Britannia again and was not disappointed. We shared an excellent fish platter with a side order of skinny fries, it was excellent. The service was good and it is a lovely place to eat.

Have been for dinner several times over the last 3 years. It used to be exceptional but has deteriorated and is certainly not as good as it was. Either a change in kitchen staff or complacency. It also has a big menu of burgers, fried chicken etc when we have always viewed it as a fish restaurant. Its BYO wine etc is ending in September and, with a limited wine list this is another reason for not returning.

Lovely food good value for money although amenities were refused as she mistook me for a tourist just popping in to use the loo?after paying and leaving a tip,I could then use the toilet? She did apologise,however,not very personable ,the venue wasn't busy and I had sat there with family and food for 45mins, left confused and feeling less than

Been looking forward to going back here for two years. But unfortunately was disappointed. The French onion soup was more like a bowl of boiled onion pieces was clear with no stock or flavour to it. The fish pie tasted ok but I pulled out 12/14 bones which I think is just a little too many for a one portion pie. Steak was over cooked and a little dry. Just a little disappointing in all.difficult to judge atmosphere as we were the only diners

Great place to grab some food. Two stars dropped because we walked all the way here along the coast because the Google entry says it’s open, but it’s closed Mondays and Tuesdays. Please update the correct opening times and I will update the review

Fabulous food with really friendly staff and a throw stone away from the beach

We hoped to eat lunch in the Restaurant but it was fully booked for following 3 days (so book early). So we went for the take away option instead. We enjoyed fish & Chips (fish yesterday was Hake). Freshly cooked and very tasty. I particularly liked the minted mushy peas. The narrow roads into Beesands are a bit of a pain, but the reward of great Fish & Chips definitely made it worthwhile.

Take away fish & chips on a breezy, dreary Tuesday afternoon in October. We live in a seaside town with fish/chip shops a plenty, but these were seriously the best fish & chips we've had in a long time! Excellent service, fish was Hake, light golden batter, great sized meaty fish, good portion of lovely crispy chips. Also had a pot of mushy peas, which we didn't realise were minted, lovely. Well worth the drive through the narrow lanes!

5 stars because that’s the maximum allowed. Small restaurant where booking is clearly essential - thankfully we had but even early on an October Tuesday we’ll off the beaten track several would be diners were told house full - but they could use the takeaway facility and use one of the many picnic tables across the road. Menu looks excellent but the specials board even more so, with a heavy focus on fresh fish all superbly cooked. It was no trouble to prepare a platter for three instead of the two advertised, and it came on individual plates. Choice of three desserts - the two we tried were delicious. Free unlimited parking opposite

Every year we come back and as always the fish was superb …. Choice on the menu was too much could have had most of the menu … service was excellent and will book again when we know when we are back BTW had the fish platter

We ate chips here a couple of days ago and the portion was large and they tasted home made. Hence we returned yesterday for fish and chips and were left disappointed. A much smaller portion of chips that no longer tasted home made and the fish although a good size the batter was burnt and inedible. Certainly not worth £11.95 a portion

After what I assume was a very busy day, our supper takeout suffered! Moules frites - 9 filled shells and a scoop of cold fries (had been advised they’d run out of chips) doesn’t really constitute a filling meal or value for money. Amazing location and pleasant staff

We bought 3 crab sandwiches @ £9.95 each. Copious quantities of crab however the meat was desiccated with more than a normal quantity of shell - The quality was like the stuff you find in the fridge a couple or three days after boiling a couple fresh brown crabs. The bread was hardening due to being kept in the fridge - Just a generally disappointing take on something that is easy to do well. This is the first day of a week's stay but based on today's experience we will not revisit

Nice place for fish and chips and all sorts if other meals.

Had cheesy chips, plenty of cheese and a good portion. Only takeaway was available when we went. Picnic tables across road. Drinks were a bit dear.

Not bad. Hake needed some seasoning, calamari was like the stuff you get in a frozen packet in a pub - Maybe it wasn’t but was no different. Cajun seafood wrap was really nice. Scallops were decent. Worst part though is the mayo, it’s the worst/cheapest kebab shop Mayo you can get. The calamari is screaming for a bit of aioli, but instead you get the worst mayonnaise on the planet.

We enjoyed a fabulous meal in the restaurant during our holiday as well as a couple of delicious takeaways. Child and dog friendly, warm friendly service. Scallops were amazing. We’ll be back!

We booked at last min and they kindly fitted us in- lovely wine reasonable priced and a nice sharing player but abit too much batter , for my liking anyway - chips would of been nice instead of more bread

Great spot located just off the beach. This place offers glorified chip shop fayre at prices in excess of a chippy. Unfortunately it doesn't live up to this premium! The battered offerings are over cooked. Such a shame as could be great.

Beautiful location and cracking food. Friendly service and no annoying seagulls. The south west at its best with a little bit of Barnsley sprinkled on top!!

Went there especially for the crab sandwiches which we had had before. Disaster, the man who supplies the crab had been involved in an accident so no crab sandwiches. Settled for Hake and chips with salad. All piping hot ( not the salad) but not what we were looking forward too. Take away service was quick and staff efficient. Price reasonable

We found this place whilst out walking and ordered a takeaway. The fish was very fresh and local and the chips plentiful. I also liked the salt, vinegar and tomato sauce on the outside table with napkins and wooden cutlery for us to use as much or as little as we wished. There were tables free by the beach for us to sit at. An excellent meal.

I am obsessed with scallops and these did not disappoint. So nice to be able to eat my meal on the beach! The sauce was amazing and it was a really generous portion.

Great place cisy and fantastic food

We ate here twice during our stay nearby, once as a takeaway and once in the restaurant. Both were great experiences. The takeaway fish and chips were enormous and excellent. In the restaurant we had the sharing fish platter, which was fantastic quality and VFM....

Quite simply the best fish and chips we've ever had. You could almost taste the sea in the hake it was that fresh and the batter was wonderful. Dare I say it, as someone who lives in Cornwall, it was far better than anything we've had there, including Rick Stiens.
