Came here for an anniversary dinner with my partner a few weeks ago and we had such a lovely evening! Didn’t manage to get her name but the young blonde lady who served us deserves a mention, such brilliant customer service and made us feel really welcome! The food was delicious and the atmosphere was lovely. Very glad we chose this restaurant!

I’m sorry but you need to give this a miss - is this a restaurant or a social club for the owners children and family. Onion bhaji starter had clearly been warmed in the microwave. Chicken tikka starter vas very dry. Mains were better but not great. Very slow service. Expensive drinks. No. I won’t be back. There are much better options nearby.

This restuarant is now called Curry Leaf. Food is lovely and freshly prepared. The down side of this is it can be a long wait if they are busy. We were happy to wait and spent most of the time chatting with the lovely staff. Food is very reasonably priced and large portions. Not a place for microwaved fast food.

Now called Curry Leaf. We ordered a take away for 6 people which came to a little over £96. We were told wait time of 40-45 mins. It took over 90 mins. We had 6 dishes varying from a madras to a masala and there was very little difference in them; they mainly taste of a generic tomato base with almost no spice. The korma loving members of the family were all perfectly content with our spiceless Madras. The exception was the Rogan Josh which was so clumsily overpowered with coriander it was inedible. Beer pumps are misleading- there is no draft beer despite the pump being there and once you order and pay, they produce a bottle from the fridge. We ordered 3 orders of onion bhaji but this was missing when we finally sat down to eat, by which time it was well past 9pm due to the delays in receiving our food. All in all this was one of the worst take away’s I have had. We stupidly overlooked the fact the place was almost completely empty on a Friday night. This was a red flag i wish I had observed with more caution.

It's a Sri Lankan food. The food was surprisingly good. Everything we ordered, we loved it. The kothou parota was excellent, and we tried it for the first time. Veechu roti was big, and we shared it. The kids loved the chicken noodles and egg fried rice. The king fish curry was very nicely cooked. The prices were very reasonable and the service was excellent. It'ss not a posh restaurant, but it served better food than the other more expensive Indian restaurants. We definitely recommend it.

Great South Indian Food, with great ambience. If you are visiting Isle of Wight and looking for a South Indian restaurant/ taste, I would strongly recommend Chumma Kitchen. Plain Dosa, Ghee roast, parota, idiyappam, Sweet / Mango Lassi are the ones we tasted and would give 5/5 for taste / quality and quantity. The sambar is not like restaurant taste but like home made. But other than that. It's delicious. We stayed in Newport 3 days and have travelled there for every evening for dinner. And would definitely come again if we visit Isle of Wight. Thanks

** It should be noted, as it appears to be overlooked by some "Reviewers" that this is a SRI LANKAN restaurant. Sri Lanka is NOT India, it's a different country and cusine with regional variations** Positives: Fantastic to see some interesting cusine on the IOW beyond the monotonous Fish &Chips... The menu is varied with wide range of meat/vegetarian dishes The menu options include various traditional Sri lamkan foods (which reminded me of my own travels there) Portion sizes fair. Good sized pieces of chicken Well spiced and flavoured. Front of House staff were friendly Restaurant appeared clean Negatives; Staff working on Sri Lanka time. Food completion can be slow. Despite ordering over the phone for collection, I had to call again to ensure that It was nearly ready (as the last time we arrived to collect, it was another 30minute wait). if customers have to wait that long, good service would dictate complimentary drink/snack however this was not the case Would like King Prawn option

Well their menu isn't quite varied as normally in South Indian restaurants, so need to plan accordingly. Luckily they had dosas, so I ordered a masala dosa. The masala is very bland. And the sambhar was more like daal soup rather than sambhar. The amount of chutney given was paltry and wasn't much tasteful. I had also ordered a fish curry and rice. The curry was good and the fish quantity was plenty. The dosa was a bit late, as I had just popped in 15 minutes after they opened. But the fish curry was brought just as I finished the dosa. The service was abysmal. Wasn't offered water or anything. And the TV was blaring an old Tamil movie which made me move to a table farther from the television.

If you are looking for an indian taste restaurant then this is not at all the one. I am giving 1 star because 0 star option os not there. We have tried Prawn Starter and masala dosa (The sambar is very less and for a small bowl of sambar we have been charged 1.50 pound which too costly), Paneer starter (First of all it’s not Paneer rather it’s Tofu and secondly after mentioning to the waiter about the dish preference like Indian spicy level and don’t put any sweet sauce in every dish but still he didn’t mention it to chef and all dishes were sweet), Fried rice (Chicken/ Veg)

Proper hot Sri Lankan food, so the perfect way to wake up taste buds swamped by the IoW's usual white food (you know, the bland Sunday roasts, soggy fish and chips, and overdone burgers). Try the fish cutlets, vadai, dosa, kothu and some unusual devilled dishes. Oh and the flakey roti is pukka. Sleepy service could be improved. The multiple loud Bollywood screens and, unaccountably, different background music give an authentic if noisy atmosphere. A welcome change of pace to the island's relatively monotonal food culture.

Very slow and inattentive waiter who could not be bothered to feign any interest in the customers. Had to ask them to provide cutlery (when the food arrived after a huge wait). Food was also disappointing (have you ever seen a black boiled egg inside a biryani?) The whole communication was odd with the waiter, no apologies for any of the poor slow service. The place is streaming Indian tv on YouTube which was distracting and bizarre. 4 very intense bulbs blasting above us did not make for a pleasant atmosphere. Toilets were dirty and unhygienic. Arrived for our 730 booking for 4 when the restaurant was empty but was not deterred by this but even though the waiter was smiling he could speak very little English and found it difficult to understand what we wanted to order from the menu. First he wanted to take our food order but we wanted drinks which meant going through the drinks menu until there was something they had in stock! I ordered a gin and tonic and he brought over a selection of 7up, still and fizzy water then had to run across the road to the Sainsbury’s to buy tonic. This would of all been ok and a bit amusing but knowing we couldn’t ask what anything was on the food menu we ordered what was called Sri Lankan street food, my dad was from,Sri Lanka and my mum cooked Sri Lankan food all her adult life so we love Sri Lankan food and we were very much looking forward to trying ‘as described - as authentic’ the food that came however was tasteless and unappetising. We all ordered starters fish cutlets which were shop bought frozen fish cakes, onion Bhaji which was over cooked and chewy. The main course was bland, no spice or flavour, the food didn’t come out together two then 10 mins later 2 more. As the evening went on they had what looked like a family party going on and the waiter forgot us and never came back again. We feel perhaps these were invited people and we were just an extra that they hadn’t considered, even though we booked over a week in advance. Very disappointed.

Excellent value for money, booking again to go back with mates who are visiting soon. The restaurant wasn't very busy, though they were doing a strong take out trade, so if you're in Ryde and like tasty, traditional good value food that's a cut above every other 'curry' place we've tried on the IOW, then you should like this. Found this new Sri Lankan restaurant in Ryde and was excited to try the Masala Dosa's, which we have had before in another establishment (Crawley). We started with the Ulunthu Vada's. Delicious spicy dounuts and dips. The Dosa's looked promising, we're crispy, huge and freshly made. The Dosa Spicy Potato filling and accompanying sides were delicious. Unfortunately the actual Dosa was too thick and had an oily after taste. I sadly was only able to eat the middle with the filling as the sides were too oily for my taste. Dad felt the same too, (also a Dosa fan). Still giving 4 stars though as the service was friendly and prompt. Lots of other choice on the menu so would visit again, maybe to try something different. The Chef maybe just needs to tweak the Dosa Recipe and cooking method, to make it lighter and less oliy, as other reviews have said the same. Due to the friendly service and plentiful choices on the menu still happy to recommend.

And the food they served was evidently made in a rush as the dosas were burnt and drenched in oil and we got the worst biryani(shouldn’t even call that it) without any raita etc. I feel there is a bit of mismanagement and a racism factor that brings down the vibe of the place. The masala dosa is exactly the same at the plain dosa apart from a pile of mashed potatos inside the masala dosa. The chutney/curry that came with those were also not the tastiest. A local non-veg restaurant that had a refurb in 2022 and happened to be highly rated as well as open on a chilly Sunday night in Ryde. We sat towards the back of the restaurant which was clean, however, there were significant fluctuations in the lighting which disturbed the ambience, alongside the female toilet door which was affected by a draught, or perhaps being haunted, who knows. There are a range of cuisines from the Indian subcontinent on offer but this is primarily Sri Lankan; thus, the recommendation is to go for typically Sri Lankan dishes. Unfortunately, very few of these are vegan and it's a shame because good vegan Sri Lankan food does exist. I enjoyed the ulunthu vada starter - the vadas are well formed and immediately signalled to me that the chefs are more than adept at cooking in their cultural cuisine. However, for the mains there was no choice other than to indulge in the North Indian options. With regret, these dishes are not their forté and this review reflects a star lost on missing authenticity in texture and flavour. If dietary options don't bother you, as other reviewers have noted this is likely a great restaurant to try real Sri Lankan fare; but be warned if you decide to deviate from that specialty. I'd absolutely come back if they improve with a more inclusive Sri Lankan menu.

Not like anything else you can get on the island. If you want authentic Sri Lankan food then this is the place.

Great selection of food, everything we ordered was delightful. Service was excellent, waiter was all on his own and was able to keep on top of everything and still had time to be friendly to everyone :) came here for my birthday, left very full and happy

Popped over to the Island for a long weekend and found this little gem by accident, wandering along Union Street in a downpour. The serving staff are young and learning on the job which I found refreshing The food was great zero complaints

Found the Chumma Kitchen while on a short stay in Ryde. We had the Best Biryani we have had for ages. Staff were very friendly and knowledgeable. Good value for money and would highly recommend and visit again.

Menu still very limited, food was good but service was dreadful. Staff very young and inexperienced, had to ask for table to be cleared. Dosa was not as good as some I've had in bourmouth or chennai dosa swindon. Staff need to be more attentive. I wish them luck but it needs some polishing around the edges.

Absolutely heavenly food, super authentic, tastes home-cooked! Having spent a lot of time in South India and Sri Lanka, I can’t even express how glad I am that Chumma Kitchen has opened up in Ryde. I will be back as often as I can 😊

Food tasted like it was quite literally made at someone's home and brought to me as their guest. Excellent taste and flavors! Prices were also reasonable for the portion.

Incredible, completely unique on the island and delicious. I've not had much Sri Lankan food before so wasn't sure what to expect. Just really tasty fresh food, the Roti is a bit special and well beyond what you get in London etc. Amazing value too, great service and nice wine selection. Would say its very low priced for how good it is compared to an Indian or Chinese. Will be back and will bring friends. Thanks

We have eaten here a few times, and the food is great (if you like Indian Cuisine). However, we prefer to takeaway from here as the restaurant is long and narrow. The staff aren't as friendly as they could be when serving you, and the toilets are not kept clean. For eating in, we prefer Tamarind in Newport, but this is, of course, just personal choice. What I will say, though, is if you are getting a takeaway, Ryde Tandoori also has another takeaway at the top of town. I would recommend avoiding this one and getting your food from Union Street. We have used their other takeaway three times, and each time, I have argued that they haven't taken off the collection discount, and each time I've got home and discovered, dishes are missing.... So my opinion is food is great (from their Union Street restaurant and takeaway) it's OK to sit in, but we prefer not to and do t use their top of town takeaway....

What a con…. Spent nearly £65 at this place and the portions are an absolute joke. Stupidly small! Barely fed 3 of us, let alone 5. We ordered a take away which we came back for as it took 45 minutes. Wouldn’t have even minded that, but to spend all that money just to have to cook more food because they serve such poor size portions is really bad. Value for money is zero! Mark up on food here is shocking!!

Delicious authentic cuisine served in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. Husband and wife owners Rick and Cris are a delight. Well worth a visit.
