Chubby's in Isle of Wight

I moved off the island 6yrs ago, popped in for dinner and the owner still regonized me. Ordered burger and chips. They were so nice just as I remembered. Going back again before I go home. Highly recommend

I always get brilliant service at Chubby’s. The service received by the staff is excellent and the food is always tasty. They are very polite and always worth the visit.

Really good fresh fish & chips, large portions and quality fish. Really enjoyed and ate in which was a Bonus.Staff was very good and nothing was any trouble to them. Will definitely be using this as a regular place to eat.

Chips were the frozen type, dry and powdery. Vinegar was that watered down, it didn't even smell of vinegar. Only had small chips, but at £3.30/tray it's a good job. We visit a lot of 'chippies' and we wont visit again.

Delicious, freshly cooked food. Chips are very chunky, nice fluffy potato inside. We had chicken kebabs which were really tasty. Staff friendly and helpful.

It has become tradition for us that when on the island - fish and chips one night from Chubby’s. This time was no different, and our freshly fried fish and chips were as good as usual. We have been visiting the island since 1985 and I asked how long the shop had been open. I was told 25 years so no, we haven’t been coming for all of this time but certainly for the last 25 !. Service is good, food fresh and tasty even if the prices - like most chip shops - no longer make it a cheap night. A good tip is while you are waiting there is a great little Collectable and retro shop next door.

The portions of chips are very small and quite expensive. Disappointing not the best experience. There were other customers in there that appeared to have been before.

Best cheesy chips, nice and fast to be served and get food. Friendly staff and not long waiting times. Good amount of food for the price.

This was the worst fish and chip meal ever, chips tasted re_heated and cold, really dried up, fish portion not a lot better, scampi was like battered shrimp, tasteless and very small portions for a large price, The bill of £40 for a very poor quality familly meal is not what customers want,They know as a seaside holiday they dont rely on repeat customers, unfortunately I had to give one star, should have been none

We were planning on eating our fish and chips at Bayside. Their business listing on Google said closes at 9pm, but we were planning to eat much earlier than that. Arrived at 4.49pm to be told “last orders at 5pm”. But even though it was still eleven minutes before last orders, they turned us away and locked up. They weren’t even friendly in the way they told us. Oh well, Bayside’s loss was Chubby’s gain, and we thoroughly enjoyed our fish and chips from Chubby’s after they saved our evening! Very friendly and helpful, and great food too.

The gentelman was very polite and told that there would be a wait for the fish and chips due to it being cooked fresh. Very good portions and the fish was very nice. Will goback next time we visit I O W.

Entertainment laid on outside by about 10 kids having a fight in the middle of the road. They were very polite and stopped fighting to let us through with our kebabs before continuing to beta each other up again.

Not the best fish and chips you will find much better and cheaper allmost anywhere in the area wouldn't go again

Being residents of Shanklin, we used to use this establishment on a regular basis. After a bit of a break, we ordered again from an old menu, realising prices would have increased a little since our last order. The prices now are disgraceful!! The food is not as it used to be and so overpriced, I'm afraid we won't be returning any time soon.

Went their with my friends as soon as we went in I saw that all staff were smiling and the food looked pleasing.Ordered some fishnchips brilliant taste not to hot or cold.The fish was brilliant aswell as the chips wasnt soggy or wet like other fish and chip shops I have been too.Their curry sayce was the best looked fresh and homemade.Same with the chilli sauce everything was on point.After a few days I went their again and brought a pizza and it was amazing staff were still smiling so then I realised it not just for one day that they smile and not sulk and you the next.Pizza was fresh so was the toppings.The food is cooked so fast in front of your eyes.Reccomended this place to my family they went there and they told me everything that I had said and the staff were still smiling and the food was cooked faster than they expected.I absolutely reccomend this place to everyone

What's the difference between a peice of old overcooked cod fish and a Chubbys Pizza?A. ... nothingWe were unfortunate enough to find ourselves hungry, being a large family the best option seemed a takeaway.... pizza seemed to be the family's first option so we set off to find somewhere.Chubbys was chosen (by Google.... yeh, thanks alot Google!). We called in our order and eagerly awaited. I set off in the car to collect whilst the family (10 of us) sat in the caravan waiting.We all know the excitement of waiting for a takeaway and the thrill of sitting round gobbling it up, this was sadly NOT the case here.Upon opening the box, the stench of soggy fish filled the caravan, finding its way in to ALL the nooks and crannies. Let's be serious here, we had not ordered fish pizza. Once the fish-mist had dissipated, I looked around and it was like a scene from the Somme. Somehow, incredibly the 'chef' had managed to create a pepperoni pizza that was both hot and soggy whilst smelling of fish.Reactions were priceless from those brave enough to sample this fishy dough based Frisbee, for this I thank 'The Codfather' Chubby, but...Do yourselves, your family amd those around you a favour..... avoid!!!

Really good customer service such friendly faces & the fish is to die for 😍😍 I really enjoyed eating from here went home a happy lady x

Upon entering you're met with a dimly lit room with a counter, behind said counter you have to men who just seem to stare at you blankly as you try to place your order.All of this I could have ignored if the food was okay, alas it was not, it doesn't even meet the standards of adequate. The chips tasted old, and undercooked. The battered sausage was tough and chewy, even the batter was tough to break. The cod tasted as though it had been in a freezer since before the first lockdown, and was definitely not fresh.Disappointed, is an understatement.

Went to Chubbys this afternoon, had 3 large cod,very fresh,the chips as promised were crispy and golden,great customer service as always,

Just been to Chubbys and had the most amazing fish and, chips,the best homemade Onion Rings exactly how I asked for lightly battered,,it was Covid Friendly everyone had masks,sanitized after touching money and great customer service,

Visited here today,had Haddock that was cooked fresh,the batter as I asked very lightly battered,good friendly welcome as always,

Great food.but had to wait 20 mins.no other customers in.if your in a rush..and hungry.it's long time to wait.

Thought I'd just say that for a takeaway that has been in business for over 20years I have nothing but good to say about this place,ok the shop front isn't 2020 but when you walk in the place is spotless,always good friendly faces,I often see the manager scrubbing the pathway outside and mopping inside not because its dirty but because surely none likes to see an unclean place,the fish is fresh,better crispy and the prices are reasonable,will definitely reccomend it to anyone who asks.

What drew us to this place chubby's from outside how it look liked turkeish kebab take away, and looked clean place and that's as far as it went. Sooner as I went in I said to my husband lets go but his heart was set on it. The Donor Kebab was not the best I ever had had it was cold in between chips were awful and dry. The men was polite.The lady was washing the floor and cleaning by the food. It should have been all been done that before opening and handling food. I threw 90 percent of the kebab and chips away.And no way they were Turkish. Some of Turkish places look like Turkish but they are not Turkish or Turkish kebab and fish and chips were originally invented by Turkey. Its looks like its harping in Uk were Pakistani and indian people think they can cook perfect fish and chips. They can't.

Wanted some fish and chips and saw Chubbys. Seemed covid ok with asking only a few people to wait in shop etc so we put on masks and went in to order. We had small fish and chips and mushy peas. The man was very friendly and joked calling me Miss which as Im 56 was quite funny or it was the mask! Anyway the food was taken back to our caravan and enjoyed. The fish was nice and white but the batter was a bit soggy for our taste. The chips were average but the mushy peas were nice. As we dont often have fish and chips I was surprised it was nearly seventeen pounts for two people but thinking about it its normal price but by us in the West Mids we get discount mini fish and chips for two pounds fifty but to be fair arent as nice. Would use again.

I hate to write bad reviews for places, but I feel I have to. I’ve been here once before and said to myself that I wouldn’t be back, The Happy Haddock, (fantastic chip shop) was closed so this was the other choice. Chips were reheated, probably from lunch time. They went cold quickly and were just horrible. The cod (£4.70) was inedible due to really soggy batter. I was looking at the menu whilst I was waiting and a steak and kidney pie was (£5.70). Way too overpriced and very poor quality food for what you pay. Thoroughly disappointed!

Walked in to the empty shop to what can be described as The worst welcome I have experienced in my life, This short turkish man literally had his arms crossed and was just hard staring at me after I said hello. I was waiting for him to ask me my order and he just carried on starring at me, it felt so awkward. After what felt like a life time of waiting he said, What do you want in this very shallow, arrogant "I don't want to be here voice". After I finish ordering The short guy and another man who was also working was preparing my order and every now they would look at me and just stare, It was so bizarre, I have never been in before and it felt like they hated me. Anyway food was crap, chips was dry and battered sausage tasted like it was cooked in the same oil as the fish. Will never be returning.

The member of staff was as miserable as sin. We asked him what kind of burger the veggy burger was and he said quorn,we got it home and it was a vegetable patty. I asked for cheese in my burger and didn't get it. The chips weren't cooked well and the kebab was absolutely dripping! The curry sauce wasn't curry sauce, I think they put some curry powder in the gravy and called it curry sauce. All in all, terrible! It astounds me that this place has managed to stay in business for so long!!!!

It was disgusting, there was a puddle of oil at the bottom of the kebab and the chips were extremely dry. I wouldn’t have even fed it to my dog!

As chip shops go, this one offers quite a wide range of items and the food is always of good quality and a competitive price.

Well what a superb meal we had,the cod was so thick and enough for 2 adults,would definitely recommend this for the family,great cheerful friendly staff.

Vile. The saveloy was inedible and cold. The cod was greasy and the batter really dark which means the oil wasn’t fresh. The chips weren’t even proper chip shop chips! Avoid at all costs.

Ordered last night for the first time in a long time. The food was very average and uninteresting. Wouldn't recommend it if other establishments are open.

Ordered scampi and chips only to receive some dark brown bullets that on the inside resembled rolled up crab sticks x I never complain about my food but this just made me so unhappy x it was awfull but we left after one bullet laughing our heads off x really chubby? NOT SCAMPI

First time on the IoW,we stayed in lovely Shanklin,and unfortunately the first place we stumbled upon was this take away.After a ten hour coach trip from Hearne Bay and very hungry, we had scampi and chips. We were given a small card tray with chips that looked and tasted like inedible wood chips and ten small round burnt things with a discusting grey filling that smelt of rancid fat.You must have to try hard to serve "food" that bad.

Hello All,gotta say just had a great supper here,very clean,the chips were chunky and the batter very crispy,my daughter picked a 9" pepperoni and my son had a Lamb Shish,all 5 star,well done Staff aswell.

Again visited Shanklin and couldn’t leave without going into the best Chippy-Chubbys where the staff are very friendly not to forget my favourite Cod and chips,definitely 5 star treatment,See you next time All.

As with most places this is no longer a "fish and chips" shop. They do a variety of foods, burgers to kebabs, but we had fish and chips, decent sized portion, polite, friendly service and they deliver too.Car park nearby and street parking when available if you want to collect.Building could do with a bit of TLC, but worth a try

This is the best takeaway restraint I’ve ever been too not only is the food delicious but the historic and environmental placement is spot on. The staff are friendly and will always help you with Any queries not only about the food but also the surrounding area me and my wife were staying down the road and they happily gave us directions there give them 5 star .ps. Freshly prepared haddock and chips, really delicious, crispy chips and batter. Too bad the wait was quite long, the place itself is scruffy looking and the staff were pretty grumpy.

Had chips battered sausage which was small and curry sauce the sauce was so tasty and chips freshly cooked staff friendly.

Who would let a frozen steak and kidney pie leave site. Shocking. Chips ok but to let something frozen leave site is unreal

Hi everyone,I went to chubby’s and the fish was great,the chips were very crispy and freshly cooked while we waited,the staff were very friendly and me and my family would recommend it to anyone looking for fresh fish and chips,my husband had a Lamb shish it was beautiful.

Chubby's was recommended by a local shopkeeper.She should be hung,drawn & quartered as the fish & chips were some of the worst I've ever experienced.The chips were dry & the fish undercooked.NEVER again will I visit this establishment,a total disgusting meal & waste of money.After a few mouthful,the whole lot ended up in the bin,NOT fit to eat by man,animal or beast!!!

Frozen chips isn’t my idea of a good chippie tea, , i can do that myself at home . Quite disappointed

Went in for a portion of chips one night in Shanklin, the staff were very smiley and kind and clearly cared about the customer, cooking food fresh to order and actually talking to you unlike most fast food places. We were actually asked how we are doing that day whereas at a franchise like KFC, we wouldn't get this quality. Moving on to the food, it tasted fresh and brilliant and was very enjoyable and was very cheap as well. Not always common in the fast food business. Only problem is a little thing about TV choices. 24 Hours in A&E; whilst waiting for chips isn't exactly the best choice for most people. Great job to the staff working there! Battered sausage, cheesy chippies and the chips were really good! Fish was good, but the batter was a little soggy, too oily. Overall pretty fast & friendly crew :).

We visited Chubbys, not a bad price for food we had 2 large kebabs and got a free small portion of chips, the food is average but what's expected of cheap fast food, one thing to mention was they were selling priced drinks which were 50p and charging £1! Not very friendly staff when we asked why!

If you are unfortunate enough to find yourself hungry in shanklin on a Sunday night please don't waste your money on fish and chips here. I couldn't even get the pigeons and seagulls to eat them as we couldn't .the best thing about it is the salt and vinegar and if you want extra you have to pay extra.!!!!!

I made my way to this place on a blustery evening for scampi and chips. My food was nicely cooked and the chips were just the way I like them. I will definitely be returning.

We popped in for an evening snacky meal having had a big lunch. Guys behind the counter welcoming and did everything right. Went for sausage and chips and saveloy and chips. waited about 10 minutes. Chips were well cooked, not too crispy, not too soggy. Sausage was well cooked, but pretty bland, saveloy was better option, but nothing special. Shanklin has other chippys, though in less prominent places.

Fish portion was not small, chips were less in abundance, but a little too greasy for my tastes. but for the size of the fish portion I didn't think it was expensive. Never cheap but then again when has fish and chips ever been cheap (not since the 60's)

Stopped here whilst on holiday as we had passed it several times, we went in and was greeted by all three members of staff to guys and a girl, we placed a big order kebabs, burgers, pizzas and fish and chips we watched as they cooked it all fresh, i can say I am a fan of kebabs and this is by far the best kebab I've ever had, the cheesy chips were beautiful, the fish omg was absolutely massive!!!! Burgers amazing pizza fantastic. Would highly recommend

Ate here a few years ago and it was fine. Came here on Wednesday and had battered sausage chips. Was made In A few seconds so not fresh at all. Sausage was rock solid. After an hour of eating I had bad stomach ache and was on the loo. It was the only thing I’d eaten all day so I know it was that!

We stopped to have fish & chips here The fish was lovely but not a great lover of the chips where a bit hard.

Struggled in a couple of bars and a chippy as it was so busy, ended up having a pint and coming here, good choice! Dinner tasted very nice salad fresh and chips (chippy style) were ok, the chilli sauce was homemade and we'll reccomended

We took Fish & chips back to our B&B; from Chubby's, the huge portion was delicious, i would recommend this place.

If you are visiting Shanklin, you’ll soon get fed up with eating in restaurants - they can be pricey and get repetitive after a while. I’m a gym-goer, so always searching low-carb/high-protein meal options: Chubby’s is therefore ideal. There’s even a post outside for tying my dog to safely when going in to order!!!!

Although i am local to the area I have not been to Chubby's for some considerable time due to previous unpleasant experiences. However having seen some of the decent reviews lately I decided to give it one more try ... and what can I say? "Never again" ... springs to mind! The sausage in batter was from another era and the chips were absolutely awful.

Food still very good, sadly service not as friendly as last year. Never mind -- will almost certainly go again next year.

We have stayed in Shanklin 3 times and always end up in chubbys late at night when everything is closed. grumpy men in there this time, but food is fresh and good portion sizes.

Went to Chubbies today and had the most amazing fish. Beautifully cooked and super large portion. So surprised by other reviews on here since this was the best fish and chips I have had for a long time. Thankyou Chubbies!

Not what I expected lamb in shish kebab was not lean could not eat most of it. I needed a magnifying glass to find salad and was not served in pita bread it was a do it yourself meal.

Chubb'ys is a great fish shop their portions are good and vale for money. We were served quickly, and the food was excellent.

Staff friendly good food well cooked not big menu but it didn't matter all tasted great, down to earth fish chip kabobs etc.

Tried this takeaway after approx 10 years, the last time was superb. This time was very disappointing, the shop looked as though it is showing its age. The salad was not fresh, and food of poor quality. I won't be going again,

We visited Chubby's as all other reasonably priced eateries were closed or had stopped serving. We had fish and chips. The fish was superb. The chips were stale which was a shame. However, the chippy is reliable as you know he will stay open late when you need a bite. Based in the old village area.

We enjoy coming here good value for money was a little let down this year as the server was picking lettuce off the raw meat kebabs and placing them in the bin but then placed the serving tongs back in to the salad tub

Called in for sausages and chips for a family of four. Sausage was ok, nothing more. But the chips were basically frozen chips fried, and were very dry and hard. None of us could finish them. One of the staff was cheerful, but the other was abrupt and unwelcoming. Can't recommend.

Popped in here the other evening after seeing a show at shanklin theatre. Had jumbo sausage and chips and it was lovely. I was about 50p short of the total so I said I'd have to nip back to the car - the guy on the counter said "thats ok , don't worry about it, just give us what you've got" - not many joints woukd do that so really appreciated that. As for one of the reviewers on here saying the staff making you feel on edge ??? What , did they threaten to shove your head in the fryer or something if you didn't pay up !!Food was really nice and staff were great. Will be returning

Whilst the customer service as good. The food was a little dry. The chips were a bit old so it wasn't the best chubby experience.

This is the Isle of Wight's BEST Chippy by far! They have a very vast menu to suit everybody. The fish is always lovely and fresh, and crispy, and chunky too! I recommend that you try this place if you want decent fish and chips! , as I've tried all the others over the years, and this is the best place easily...
