Really good experience here! The restaurant itself is nice with a relaxing atmosphere, but the food was also really tasty, fresh and authentic to how I know it should be. We had a short rib full bunny and mini bean bunny - both were exceptionally tasty with that typical and authentic Durban curry spice taste. We also ordered the pumpkin fritters but they told us the batter had run out and would take too long to make again, but offered something else in its place. We went for the cheese and sweetcorn samoosa and omg they were soooo good I could have eaten just a tray of those.

Tasty bunny chow, refreshing cider, nice atmosphere. Would recommend, but given some of the other reviews in here, we may have been lucky.

This was really not a great meal and was very disappointed to have eaten the food that was served to my family. I drove a good 2 hours and was truly disappointed, plus the food was burnt and prawns in my chicken curry were raw. I was so angry I didn’t even bother to complain but it didn’t look like the staff were even bothered. I have recently moved from South Africa Durban and this was far from the finished article that I’m used to. I even saw an old friend which grew up in my area and was finishing his meal, the chances of us running into each other was really coincidental and we spoke about the food and he said it wasn’t great but I thought to give it a chance as I didn’t come that far for nothing. Just truly irritated and dissatisfied. Anyway I definitely will not be going back and wouldn’t recommend it to anyone unfortunately, which is a real shame as I can see some of the reviews here are really good but unfortunately I find it hard to believe it’s the same place.

chips looked like thay had been cooked a couple of times and also cold. The lamb was also cold and didn't really taste of much. I did order the lamb dish a couple of weeks ago and loved it. But this time the meal was poor. sorry

I received a container full of rice and 2 pieces of lamb. I had order lamb curry and sticky rice..Very, very, much disappointed. I was disheartened as I was looking forward to it. I'm a regular customer , so I have no idea what went wrong.

It's been a while since I last had a true bunny chow. Been researching a good restaurant. African Chow is cosy and the staff are always accommodating. The food was brilliant and exactly as I remembered having many years ago. Price was, it's very reasonable and I would definitely be going back. They are pet friendly and nothing was too much trouble for the staff. There's no immediate parking, so park at the local Sainsbury's, across the walk.

Gave us food that contained allergens we specifically asked to avoid. Every member of staff should know the ingredients of the items on sale, it's the law. People have died from this kind of carelessness. Food took about an hour to arrive after ordering, bread had run out so we had rice instead in our bunny chow. It wasn't nice and we ended up leaving most of it. Huge chunks of potato meant that everything else was overcooked. It didn't look or taste nice. Overall an unpleasant experience that took so long we missed our planned evening entertainment. I am very upset that we were offered food that went against our dietary requirements.

If you know South Africa, you'd know the Indian food is amazing! Bunny chows are unique to the SA Indian community from days of Apartheid and has become a cultural cuisine. I've tried a few bunny chows in the UK but this is the 1st one that is amazingly authentic. Fresh bread, divine mouth watering curry and great service.

Can’t comment on service or atmosphere because I had a take away but the lamb curry was absolutely outstanding I had it with chips and could tell if you ate in they would also be delicious, mine were a little sweaty by the time my delivery driver actually found my house but that’s an issue with Deliveroo. I also had the garli king prawns which were cooked to absolute perfection. I wasn’t keen on the sauce as wasn’t garlicky enough for me but that’s just personal taste. Overall absolutely delicious food and really reasonable price. I will definitely visit again and often probably

Fantastic food. We had the short rib mild curry, pumpkin fritters, pork belly and rotis. Everything was so good and flavourful. Great prices and really friendly staff.

Really excellent food, good portion sizes at a reasonable price. The food has clear influences from India but a real heartiness of South Africa.

The paneer curry genuinely took my breath away and I savoured every bite of this meal. Incredibly good value and all the staff are lovely <3

Have not had a good lamb bunny in years! These bunnies did not disappoint. We shared a veggie, chicken and lamb curries. We ordered medium spice and they were perfect. Roti's were awesome, samosas could have been cooked a little more but the flavour was sensational. Of course Mrs Balls chutney was a great accompaniment. Great experience

First experience of South African food. Friendly staff, pleasant vibes. Bean and tofu curry good value though nothing special but OK, good level of spice. Slow service though wasn't in hurry so didn't matter too much.

Order did not arrive, eventhough when I called the restaurant said it had been picked up. The app just said it was being prepared then after many hours delivered. Either the app was not used correctly by the restaurant or the alleged driver, or the driver dumped the food or the food wasn't actually prepared. Either way I want a refund

What a total disappointment, we a visited for dinner on Friday evening after reading good reviews and with us being South African wanting to have a taste of home again. We ordered 1 lamb and 1 chicken bunny chow together with a Boerie roll, after a long wait our food arrived which was burnt and very spicy even though we ordered mild spiced, the boerie roll had MOULD yes mould on it. The lady in charge said that they were trying there best but I am afraid that any food outlet that serves mouldy rolls and burnt food should not be allowed to serve food to the public . Upon reflection we should have realised that this establishment was not well run as it was rather grubby with sticky tables and menus and just looked run down. I do not recommend this restaurant

Amazing food. Pumpkin fritters are incredible!

I visited with a friend on Saturday. We both had the chicken curry and some carrot salad. I had the roti and she had rice. We both had savannas. Finished off with pumpkin fritters. I then returned on the Sunday to buy more pumpkin fritters, curry pies and groceries to take home. Honestly the best meal I've had in a very long time. The staff were all so lovely and couldn't do enough to make our experience what it was. The manager was super lovely, welcoming and clearly cares about the restaurant. I would be a regular if I didn't live in North Essex.

The lamb bunny chow was delicious, I've given 4 stars for food just because the boerewors could be better. I'm not sure if they make their own or get it from St Marcus, but it tastes similar. The boerewors and chips were well portoined but not to my taste.

So late that my daughter had to leave before eating. We ordered for a 1815 delivery. Everything was so cold. Corn ribs were salt and pepper not garlic butter. ONE piece of tofu as an extra on the Chow! veg?? hellishly expensive as an £2,25 add on. Shame :(

Unbelievable authentic South African food. It was amazing 5 of us with starters and 2 drinks each for approx £110. Great value for money and the flavour was amazing.

Our journey to the restaurant took an hour and a half. Once we went up to the till order some boerewors, we were informed that they had run out of. When we attempted to order a toasty as an alternative, we were surprised to learn that they had discontinued this item, despite it still being on the menu. The server was confused on to why is was still on the menu. To add to the disappointment, they also did not have pumpkin fritters available. It would have been much appreciated if they had informed us of these shortages upon our arrival, rather than us going back and forwards trying to order alternatives after we had tried to order each item separate times, a courtesy call or email ahead of time would have been thoughtful. Unfortunately, this experience was disappointing, and we do not plan to return

Would give less than 1 star if that was possible. We eagerly travelled 1.5 hours with a toddler to try this food as my partner is from SA. We were seated and told to order at the till. We went up to place our order and we’re told sorry no boerewors available, told to choose something else. Baring in the mind the entire menu only consists of 3 items - Boerewors Curry Bunny chow And toasties After a minute or so we go back up and say okay can we please have a toasty instead. Only to be told ‘oh, we don’t do toastier anymore. We haven’t in ages but the manager just hasn’t taken them off the menu. Another member of our party went up to order separately and was then also told they were out of pumpkin fritters. Communication is absolutely horrific. Why did it take us going back and forth to find out that these items were unavailable. In my opinion it would have made more sense for the lady who greeted us upon entry to let us know before seating us as we wouldn’t have wasted our time.

Had the curry trio today Beef, prawn and Veg and was disappointed, same curry sauce used for all the curries, so basically had the same taste for all .Loads of sauce and not enough meat etc, no potatoes in any of the curries which was a shame as they absorb the flavour. The curry sauce tasted like it was burnt at some point and for a mild curry it was quite spicy. There was no carrot slaw available as they had run out even though they are literally across from a large Sainsbury's so had to get a portion of coleslaw to go with the curry. Prices not too bad but unfortunately short of staff so waited about 40 min for a meal that is basically pre cooked as the curry obviously not being made at the time and just being warmed up.

Was like being transported back to South Africa! Delicious curries, tasty sides, a lovely selection of drinks & jam jars, interiors that remind me of home & all very well priced. I had the vegan veg curry & was DELISH!

Blixem it was good. We went to Brighton for the day from Aldershot specifically to eat here and they did not disappoint. We had the Chicken and Lamb bunnies, Chicken liver, samoosas and fritters. The Fanta grape tasted like the South African version. When they say spicy, they mean it so if you are sensitive make absolutely sure you get mild. Order at the counter. Waitresses were delightful. Location could be better. Would be great to see them be really successful and be able to expand to a bigger place, more vibe, etc.... perhaps even start doing Braai. Will be coming back for sure.

It’s all about the food: without doubt the most authentic SA curry I have had outside of South Africa. They also do Boerwors rolls!!! Excellent!!!

Not too early. I appreciated it. Peeled king prawns. Whats not to like? Why people leave the shells on, I don't know. Especially in a messy sauce. We can dictate the spice level too. I prefer it with roti's but I had a bunny which was great too. Opens early too. No waiting until 5pm. I have had discounts too after only buying a few meals. Def a favourite of mine at the moment.

As a South African indian who has grown up with authentic Durban curries I was very eager to try out this place to get a taste of home , however this is a far cry from it. A very sweet curry base with a lot of tomato bits and alot of fatty pieces of lamb. Would not recommend if you are looking for an authentic Durban curry.

Great gritty and quirky place. The food is great, and the staff are super friendly and nice but service is slow. Still, I'd heartily recommend - it's a great informal dining experience, just make sure you aren't in a hurry. Also, the condiments are fantastic.

Came down on Good Friday and a few days later I’m already thinking when is the next time I’ll be in Brighton. Great food, decent service at a reasonable price. The lamb bunny chow was the best lamb I’ve tasted since my grandmas in SA- slow cooked to perfection. My wife looked her curry also. Would fully recommend

I went to African chow a few days ago. The atmosphere of the place was very nice, the food was delicious i had a chicken roti. I believe cooked by a girl who I gave my compliments to. However the only thing that ruined my experience was the waiter I had called Arjun. My food was bought out late with no apologies from my waiter. I politely asked for water and when it was given it was slammed onto my table with some spilling onto my food. Would come here again however my waiter was disrespectful so don’t think I will return.

I’m sorry but HOW is this not a viral food recommendation?! The food was incredible, the service was excellent - everyone was so polite and informative, I can’t fault them. Also the location is nice and central but not so central that it feels claustrophobic. 100/10

Ah, fantastic taste of South Africa. Bunny chows are amazing. I'm South African, and I will say if they didn't hit. Staff are great and friendly. Will definitely stop by every time I go to Brighton. Nice little selection of snacks and goodies to buy and take home. Biltong from St Marcus is also available.

Had a boerewors roll it was really good and authentic to something you’d get in south africa! my first time seeing a south african restaurant in brighton so i was really pleased wil definitely come again. was also pleasantly surprised to see fizzers and south african fanta

So disappointing, the beef curry was 90% fat and pretty flavourless. Wish I’d saved my money and made one instead.

I’ve walked past this place so many times and for some reason never really noticed it. Today I are there for the first time and I can’t believe how much I missed out on by only just going now! Amazing food, chill vibes and good prices. Best meal out in a while, 100% recommend!

I'm South African so I love the fun and nostalgia of this place. But it's a bit sad the space is not as inviting and considered as it could be. The food is tasty but the "simply spiced" bunny chow is on the hotter side for a medium curry. Not sure about ordering at the counter when the place is very empty. A bit more TLC would be helpful all round. Cheap and cheerful for sure.

Disappointed I've ordered here quite a few times and the chicken and King prawn bunny's hardly had any fillings, from what I'm usually given this was missing a lot. I still gave 5 stars as this is the first time it has happened. Also I paid nearly £6 for chips and there were barley any. I hope this doesnt happen again.

They catered for our work event. The food was AMAZING 🤩 We had curry and slaw and rice. Super accommodating with GF. So tasty, just right spicing and flavours.

I've only ordered online but want to eat in as they have more choices, they still have a lot online. I've tried multiple things on their menu and everything was amazing. I could eat there food everyday and I have so far since finding them 3 days ago lol.

First time trying this place after seeing their food on fb and it looked delicious so I was very disappointed when I ordered in and my food looked nothing like on their photos. Pork was burnt with zero flavor, curries did not come with roti like on the photo just some white thick piece of bread… very disappointing as I was so excited to try something new :(

This is quite possibly one of the best restaurants I have ever had the pleasure of ordering from, biltong and droewors is absolutely to die for and the durban style curries are out of this world. Keep up the good work guys and you can be sure that everytime I'm in Brighton I will be ordering 😊

Food was overcooked and too strong. I asked for another hot curry. My stomach is still burning. Lamb was cooked to long and the crab curry also to dry and to hot. Not going there again

Went there for dinner with my girlfriend, the food is so tasty!!! We had the sharing platter and got to try various items on the menu, I really appreciate that you can pick and choose each element. You have to try the rotis, these are the bomb! Fries were perfectly cooked, the curries beautifully spiced and flavoursome, perfectly portioned, the staff super friendly and welcoming, we will definitely come back there ❤️

Had such a wonderful time the first time we visited with a group of friends earlier this year that we decided to go again. Having grown up in South Africa, I was craving that nostalgic culinary Mzanzi feast, and while the food delivered, the service didn't. The curry is delightful (although the simple is hotter than you think). The pumpkin fritters are yum, and the fries are awesome crispy. Our waitress was super friendly, but I think on our particular day, Chow! were understafted as the food took 40 minutes, no side plates were supplied with the chicken wings starter and the gin and tonic arrived in a cool drink glass. I'm completely aware it's sold as a 'street food' establishment but it has to be better than that, I'm afraid. I have read only good things on TripAdvisor about the service so I'm hoping it's a once-off and that my notes are seen in a constructive manner to help make it an even more popular establishment.

If you are looking for delicious food at a reasonable price this has to be one of the best spots in Brighton. The Durban-style curries are full of flavour and will leave you wanting more. The owner, Greg, is always friendly and welcoming.

Like the food esp. Biltong and pumpkin fritters. The lamb curry was not my favorite as the meat now great cut. That said really great service and welcoming atmosphere.

Our Monday early dinner at African Chow was great. The Durban curries were very good and I just loved my lamb bunny chow. Having worked in Durban SA for a few years it felt I was back there. Plus having the SA beers helped.

Just had the pork belly and chicken curry with rice and roti. Amazing! Mrs HS Balls chutney with it. Yummiest thing ever, next time ill go for the mild as its spicy!!

These guys totally nail the big flavour accessible prices brief in my book. Was so happy to come and try the South African Durban streetfood and the all-famous pumpkin fritters (totally worth the hype). They had two vegan curries - one sweet potato based the other (my fave) was puffed tofu mushroom and spinach and it was SO GOOD. Add to that the buttery soft fresh roti and banging Mrs Balls hot chutney and the flavours were 🔥. You can choose to have it with rice chips or bunny chow style in literally a loaf of bread 🍞! You can choose your heat level and I was glad we went wimpy with mild as it was just right. I love how you can mix and match and add on to your hearts content plus a big bowl of curry is only £9 😱. But trust me maybe order about 5 Roti as you’ll love them. And definitely get extra pumpkin fritters as dessert or their palate cleansing mango sorbet. Really nice vibe, awesome chilled service with an order at the till approach which I’m always fine with. Plus they had great music and do live music nights too. If you’ve never found it it’s opposite the Sainsburys behind the station. And is definitely worth a visit next time you need a big flavour feast or fancy discovering some of Durban’s classics

The staff are lovely and the food is flavourful. And the chilli beef Biltong is lush. Would highly recommend
