While visiting London, my son had a craving for Indian food and he read reviews, don't know where of Chourangi nexto to Marble Arch and made his pick and dinner it was. Incredible food to the point where I have never tasted anything like we had at the restaurant. Am including a picture so you can get an idea of what we had. I don't have more words than to recomend the Chourangi and their Bengali cusine.

Being partly Bengali myself I was intrigued when I came to know about Chourangi (an unorthodox spelling of Chowringhee) and invited some friends from Calcutta who frequently hanker for the food of the great city. We were surprised to learn that they only open at 1.30pm but the location is just a few minutes walk from Marble Arch tube station. We got a nice greeting and enjoyed taking in the large wall prints of scenes of Calcutta although the restaurant itself didn't look that new. The best dishes in my view were the slightly unusual ones such as the banana flower croquettes and the kasundi paneer tikka. Both had lovely flavours and are not dishes that I have seen on Indian restaurant menus. The kosha lamb and Nizam's malai tikka were pretty standard - I have certainly had better equivalents - both in India and elsewhere. The biryani was a Calcutta style biryani in that the flavours were delicate but the amount of chicken in it was a little stingy and the dish itself was far from piping hot. The sea bass paturi was delicious but the size of the portion was incredibly small - for the 26.50 price tag. We also took umbrage at having to pay for the sliced onions - I've never had to do that before. As for the bread basket - it was reasonably priced but again not piping hot and far from, for example, Gymkhana's gold standard, which is a work of art. Overall, the small portions (especially the fish) and having to pay for a very small plate of onions, left a bit of a bad taste in my mouth after some generally good food.

Very good upscale biryani shop right by Marble Arch. The aubergine dish was truly outstanding as was the pumpkin and beans. Very good, buttery jackfruit biryani. Not cheap, but prices were what you’d expect from this sort of restaurant. I’d repeat.

Amazing food, fabulous flavours, good service. Wine very expensive. Good atmosphere (only spoilt by fellow diners constantly checking their mobile phones which is not the fault of the restaurant but is disrespectful to the food, the staff, and other diners). Good location just off the main road, lovely decor. And yet again I must say the food was incredible.

Lovely food, very different from the usual Indian cuisine, with a distinctly Bengali / Kolkata flavour and specials .... Great location, two minutes from Marble Arch staion ...... spacious place, wall to wall windows with view of street outside . Well decorated, subtle , tasteful . We did make a reservation in advance, popular place, very well occupied half an hour after we sat down . Menu with plenty of veggie choices, big wine list, lovely bar .. Wide ranging menu with a set menu two course choice or a la carte . For starters we chose one beetroot chop and one sweet potato and lotus stem chat ... the chop was out of this world, so crisply and beautifully browned, rich stuffing of beet root and potato , delightful tamarind sweet chutney to go with it, large portion with four pieces of chop so pretty heavy ........ the sweet potato / lotus stem combination was most unusual and delightful . both recommeded ... For mains we had one garlic naan and one butter naan - both the Calcutta variety . For mains we chose one Mango/Mustard/Aubergine and one Hing ( Asafoetida ) Aloo Dum . The aloo dum was beautifully cooked with lovely baby potatoes coated with a nice coating of spice . The mango mustard aubergine had absolutely stunning flavours of mustard , tha panch poran five spice mix of Kolkata , most unusual and outstanding .... For drinks I had the unusual jaggery lassi ( brown unrefined sugar lassi ) and the wife had the gulab lassi . The lassis were nice but could have been thicker ........ We will go again ..... but the place is pricey . The only feedback for the restaurant to consider : service can be more attentive and proactive .... but is good . The bathrooms can be more elegant . The lttiel sink in the corner though marble did not look very elegant, the somewhat soppy mat had got stuck under the toilet door which therefore refused to open fully... But overall the food is brilliant and worth a go as a special treat .......

Second try of takeaway from Chourangi after many months, the first was disappointing and it is surprising how mediocre the food still is especially given premium pricing. The packaging game itself remains poor and like an average takeaway. The Kosha Mangsho (Lamb) was on the tougher side and not tender. Lamb Biriyani was not the greatest and neither did it have a lot of lamb in it and what it had was not tender. It's a bit like the Biriyanis you can get on Whitechapel Road at places like Nanna's. In comparison Darjeeling express which also does similar cuisine was miles better and another level and a fantastic experience in execution and taste. The biriyani is also much better in Dishoom we thought.

The food was good and served fast. Lived the chicken kababs and the lamb Biryani. Highly recommended. Not sure if the sandesh tart dessert was supposed to be the way it was. Original sandesh is much better. Must try the jaggery lassi , very good!!! Customer service could have been a little better as the price for the dishes are quite high as compared to similar restaurants. Thats what stopped me for giving a 5.

My second time eating at this restaurant.. as I am from Kolkata (but living in USA many many years); so whenever I am traveling to any part of the world .. if I hear about a restaurant serving Kolkata cuisine I always check it out ..last year I went here for dinner; this time it was for lunch .. the food this time was excellent, better than last time! Both the fish fry and prawn cutlet were spot on .. Infact my husband liked it so much we might go back another time before we leave London 😄.. you must try the mango kasundi harmony ( cocktail ) I had two .. first one was little sweet for me so the second one I told them less mango .. and it was perfect you can taste the kasundi ., just awesome .. I had rabri with langcha for dessert .. it tastes good but it’s not langcha , more like gulab jamun .. my husband’s kulfi was ok .. service can be little better .. but if you are missing home food when you are in London, you must try this place !!

I heard about this place from my friend, and he raved about the restaurant. He is very picky about his choices, so I knew my visit wouldn't be wasted. Boy was I pleasantly surprised, My search for a proper authentic biriyani restaurant is over As a matter of fact, my search for a restaurant where authentic Bengali food is served, is over. Every item I tasted was amazing. The hilsa paturi, the Dak Bungalow Chicken, the chicken and lamb biriyani, all gave me the genuine Calcutta vibes. Having grown up in a family where my mother and all of my aunts are extremely good cooks, I know what good Bengali food tastes like. What I had today, took me back to Calcutta, made me nostalgic. Even the masala tea reminded me of the days when that would be the perfect catalyst to a rainy day's adda on a weekend. I am definitely going back, and having learnt that their menu changes as well, is all the more reason to keep going back. To everyone who longs for authentic Bengali food, that gives you the feeling of being back in Calcutta, this place should be your destination. I can't wait for their new menu for the oncoming Durga Puja, and other such occasions.

Visited Pahli Hills Bandra Bhai recently and had a mixed but overall good experience. We started with two Nimbu Panis — salty and sweet-salty — but honestly couldn’t tell the difference between the two. From the small plates, we tried the Bombay Bhaji — it was flavorful but quite mild. I prefer spicier food, and while I should’ve mentioned that, it would’ve been great if the staff had asked about spice preferences. The Achari Paneer Tikka from the Tandoor & Grill was excellent — full of flavor and cooked perfectly. Instead of going for big plates, we opted for two sides — Okra Masala and Black Daal — along with Tandoori Roti and Lachha Paratha. The Okra Masala was nicely made but could’ve used a touch more salt. The Black Daal was creamy but quite bland for my taste. On the bright side, the portions for the sides were generous — definitely more than expected. The breads were fresh, soft, and absolutely on point. The place was packed, so the service was a bit slow, but nothing unreasonable. Overall, a good meal with some real highlights, especially the Achari Paneer and the breads. A bit more attention to seasoning and spice levels would really elevate the experience.
