Chiquito in Newcastle upon Tyne

Really lovely food and friendly staff. We ended up being charged £15 too much in error and we realised later and rang up (I should have checked our receipt) but they voided the bill as it was their error, which was nice of them.

The poor staff in this franchise. 2 serving, 2 in the kitchen, in school half term. Somehow they managed to keep smiling and being polite but come on Mr/Mrs Manager... Hire some staff otherwise half the customers won't come back.

Visited on Thurs 31st Oct for lunch with my daughter and her boyfriend. On arrival we were told its a 25 min wait for a table as short staffed in the kitchen. No problem at all, we were happy to have a drink in the bar. We were seated and our order was taken by a lady in all black who was very pleasant and professional. Starter came out in good time but we had a very long wait for our mains. Again not a problem.....i have worked in hospitality for 22 years so completely understand what its like to be short staffed. However the staff member wearing the blue/turquoise t shirt really did ruin our experience. The 2 drinks orders she brought to our table were slammed down at the end of the table with nothing more than a grunt and the mains were the same. They were slammed on the table and she just turned and walked off. We actually wanted to order more drinks so i had to get up and find another member if staff. We quickly ate our food and went to pay the bill before our table had been cleared. The bill was sorted by the lady in all black and she very kindly gave us some discount for the delay on the food. I really did appreciate that but im afraid the rude service by one team member means i will not be returning. Such a shame one person can ruin the hard work of the rest of the staff.

The food was great. But I really have to commend Liepa for doing a great job. She was able to accommodate more or less 10 customers alone, wearing a never-tiring beautiful smile. This girl deserves a big salary increase.

Dont know whats happened to this chiquitos, my partner and I used to love coming to this one and the staff used to always be so friendly...there seems to be a new manager who only seems to micro manage her staff at times she could very well help. I went a couple weeks back and saw this, with a waitress on her own, off her feet trying to serve everyone all at once, while the manager storms through the kitchen doors almost looked like to tell her to hurry up. I went today, same manager different staff member (ON HER OWN). If the staff member wasnt asked by customers to take photos of them, she was also being micro managed. As i watched for next 30 minutes unserved and ignored (meanwhile they were allowing more and more customers to be seated), we just thought it would best to get up and leave as i couldnt face wasting another second of my time at this restaraunt. Such a shame how downhill this place has fallen.

how the mighty have fallen, used to be such a lovely place with such friendly staff. now, you’re sat and ignored for 30/40 minutes to wait for rude and ignorant staff to try and explain the menu to you. we stood up and left, wouldn’t give them another second of my time quite frankly. avoid at all costs unless they bring the old management back as it used to be amazing… such a shame.

Not the first time we've visited here and it's always been nice, but not today. Place wasn't that busy, food came and was barely warm. I had the veg bean enchiladas, that I usually have, bland is an understatement, the filling was like must, the cheese on the top was solid and the sauce was very watery. My son had pulled pork enchiladas, which he's had previously and loved. Again today he said it was really bland and just warm. We both left half of our meal. We were never asked if everything was OK. All in all it was very disappointing and we won't be going back.

Very quiet on a mid week evening but good was good quality and staff were attentive and helpful

First time trying this place, and expectations did not disappoint. I went for the enchiladas with the hot sauce, I can handle the heat and thought it would be quite hot. Was quite wrong it was just enough spice tame almost but didn't over power the food. The service was great very quick and friendly also... to say I had to travel an hour and half to get there. Would go again!

Loved it! Staff is very friendly. Had the bbq pork and chicken fagita , loved it. Friends hac chicken burguer it looked great. Prices are ok. Loved the atmosphere, big tables loads of fun for a meal with friends. I will come back. Usually not too busy, didnt have a reservation.

Just had a wonderful time at Chiquitos celebrating my birthday. The food was great and our server Sam was fantastic and went above and beyond to make it a special evening for me. Highly recommended!!!

Service was good, food was poor. Steak was very overcooked and dry. Plates were taken without asking how the meal was or any issues.

We've only been to Chiquito's once before, in 2018 and we had a pretty bad (mid) experience, so much that we hadn't returned until yesterday. Perhaps it was a one off and we've been missing out on a pretty decent restaurant, easy access to a burrito when there are few burrito bars around nowadays. We chose Chiquito's on a Saturday night mainly because it was quiet. The service was great, cannot fault it one bit. Very speedy with the starter but the main course took close to 25 minutes. The nachos we got for the starter were nice, home-cooked tortilla chips (according to the signage) which was a nice change from most places that use tortilla chips from a bag. We started to call ourselves silly for putting off this place for 6 years because of a single bad experience! Everything changed however when we decided to order a classic build-your-own burrito. I, myself, went for a chimichanga, a deep-fried burrito, and my partner went with a good old fashioned normal burrito. Surely, this authentic Mexican restaurant, the biggest Mexican restaurant chain in the UK no doubt, would have a classic burrito done perfectly, stuffed to the brim with filling, right? Well, no, not at all, the main was the biggest disappointment I've had in a long while. The burritos (which I will refer to both our burrito and chimichanga as), was unbelievably tasteless, we both decided on the BBQ sauce/marinade/flavour but alas it was more of a tiny hint of the stuff. We both went for pulled pork (which was supposed to be covered in flavour, right? The flavour we chose?) was basically just plain pulled pork which has a very strange taste without a nice marinade, I'm sure most people agree. The black beans that make up a nice 30-40% of a burrito? were non existent, a few were scattered in here and there. The rice had no flavour, just plain rice basically. And... nothing else. Burritos are supposed to be packed, filled to the brim with ingredients and flavours but it was reminiscent of a deflated balloon. My partners burrito was delivered cut in half, which was strange, my chimichanga wasn't though. The tortilla wasn't sealed too good so couldn't pick it up without it falling apart, we both had to use a knife and fork in the end, very, very disappointing experience! In the end, we were right about our first experience, if you're in the mood for nice authentic Mexican food? I would recommend you find a smaller business that specialises in delivering an authentic experience and avoid this chain at all costs, not worth the disappointment, don't let this place be your one and only experience with Mexican food, it's much better than this! I swear! Last but not least, the price. Off the top of my head it was between £10-15 for a burrito (with a few tortilla chips on the side) that is extortionate for a burrito, especially of this quality. I am aware of burrito bars that create burritos jam-packed with ingredients, so much in fact that they struggle to close it, for less than a tenner! Find one of them instead! I am fully aware it's almost definitely not the chefs, most likely a result of a corporate choice to create a menu that uses the least amount of ingredients while maintaining a high selling price. It's the centre of Newcastle, what do you expect? TL;DR: If a Mexican restaurant can't make a decent burrito, then what's the point?

Waited quite long for a table without acknowledgement at the host stand, however once seated, service was good. A little slow at times but can see they were short staffed for a Saturday afternoon. Lady in white shirt (Sam?) exceptional service and very friendly and approachable. Food 5/5, had chicken fajitas and kids meal with dessert, thoroughly enjoyed by all! Would definitely be returning!

Unfortunately i have to share details of the worst service i have ever received in a restaurant. Myself, my wife and two young kids. The restaurant is large and was about 20% full when we arrived. We were greeted well and taken to a table. That was unfortunately the highlight. No hint or suggestion from the team that there could be a wait. After a long wait, our food and drinks order was taken. We ordered just mains but asked for some nachos with dips to share while we waited for the mains. Drinks were served promptly. After 30 minutes wait, our nachos that had been sat under a warming rack for an age turned up and were barely edible, we ate them as we were getting hungry. 40 minutes after the nachos arrived , our mains had yet to arrive. Numerous tables around us has arrived after, been served, paid and left. On no occasion were we offered further drinks and we were approached only once by the team to be told it should not be long. I decided to speak to the manager who was shocked and said she would chase up our meals. Another 10 minutes passed and our meals arrived, delivered one by one a few minutes between the first three. The last was 10 minutes later as they admitted to dropping it on the floor and had to make a fresh (the first bit of honest, and real communication all meal. And the first offer of apology) On the whole, the meals were ok, but ruined by the experience before. We were told the manager would speak with us at the end. We did receive a check back, and they came to take the dessert orders once we had finished. The desserts were not rushed out to us. At no point during the whole service did we get offered further drinks. The manager sent a team member with the bill verbally offering 30% off the meal. I accepted their offer as an apology. When looking at the bill, 30% was taken off two main meals. Nothing off the children's meals or drinks. I wasn’t chasing a free meal, but a saving of £9 after the service received was barely apologetic. At this point we had been in the restaurant over 2 hours and we had all had enough. So I paid and left, with zero attempt at communication from the team. Genuinely disappointed with the lack of care and professionalism.

Maybe went on a "bad day" or time but half four on a Saturday the place was like the mary celest, maybe 10 other customers, none in the main bit of their meal, either finished or sitting in silence, presumably waiting to be served. The service was pretty bad, firstly it took a while to be seated as they seemed more focused on cleaning an empty table and walked past us twice without asking if we wanted to be seated. I initially put this down to the waiter maybe thinking we where still browsing the menu? or maybe it was an initial test to see how patient we'd be, not patient enough to pass the second test. Once assigned a table (not actually asked where we'd like to sit in the mostly empty restaurant) we where given menus in total silence, then no one to be seen for 15 minutes at which point we took the hint and left.

Food 10/10 service was rapid 🌯 🌟

My first time in years as unfortunately the one in Teesside closed down but I have to say it's as good as I remember! We got nachos to start which were sensational - some of the best I've had. The mains were extremely nice as well. Can't fault it one bit. All the staff have been lovely and we've had a great time. Open up again in Teesside!!!!

We popped here for an easy going dinner to use our Taste Card on my partner's birthday which had been a busy full on day, and yet this meal ended up being a bit of a highlight of the day. Our host Jemma was so lovely and kind and she really made the experience, and the kitchen staff fast and made really yummy dinners for us. We don't live in Newcastle or anywhere near, sadly, but we'd definitely return if we did

I’ve had such a lovely experience Anya was very hospitable , she was well informed of drinks and food and made me want to return to chiquitos again. Years ago chiquitos was a regular for us as a couple however the food had went downhill, now after a four year break I gave it another chance and I’m so glad I did as I feel it has returned to its former glory. The manager (Scottish) collected our bill, she was also hospitable asking about our day, about future plans as well as joking with us. Overall the entire experience has been a fantastic experience, I would highly recommend.

Called here on a Thursday evening with colleagues. Very friendly and welcoming staff. 2 draught lagers on. The Spanish lager being very easy to drink. The service was spot on, and we didn't feel rushed at any point. The food was very enjoyable, well cooked and tasty. Highly recommend for dinner, I would call here again.

Can’t blame the local staff that Chiqutos have decided to remove tacos from the create your own menu. How can a Mexican place remove hard shell tacos?? Not happy with this.

My visit to chiquito was amazing The food was good but one downside was that the card reader took forever to load and they charged a service fee.

was in the mood for some mexican food and gave this spot a try purely out of curiousity. some positives are that the place looked appealing, generally spacious, and the staff was nice for the most part. unfortunately, the staff rarely looked over the dining floor, making it hard to catch their attention without feeling rude. the food took a while to be served and wasn't really what i expected for the cost. sorry to say, i'd probably only dine here again if a companion would initiate the invitation and they were treating..

Visited here with family on a Wednesday night. I booked as I have a rare garlic intolerance. I always explain on the booking if you can't accommodate please cancel my reservation (I don't expect anything as its not listed as one of the 14 major allergens). Clearly no one checks any bookings because the server didn't discuss with the chef until we were in the restaurant. Long story short I woke up on Thursday morning with crippling stomach pains I could barely get out of bed. I am also pregnant. We visited the hospital to make sure the baby was OK. Luckily nothing wrong there. They just told me I had eaten something I shouldn't. Took a few days to return to normal. (I also have a 2 year old so I can't just stay in bed all day). Will not be returning.

Food was okay, not the best staff was on their phones all the time while our food was on the pass. I get it's not a busy day, but at least check on the customers.

We were seated nicely in a great booth. Host Michael was very attentive with quality service, food was delightful. Great atmosphere, not too loud and some authentic Latin tunes to boot.

We enjoyed our visit here. The food was very tasty and served quickly. We ordered 2 fajita meals, however only one showed up and the other had to be asked for again. Despite this, the staff were apologetic and served the second dish very quickly so we appreciated this. There's a wide range of options to eat with options for fussy eaters and mild food if you don't like spice. The restaurant is fairly large with lots of seating and is located nearby lots of shops and activity centres. My only issue would be the price being slightly high for the content, however this would not put us off returning again.

A little disappointed with the five bean chilli burrito (vegetarian). Nicely presented, but literally must of been five beans, lots of rice not many vegetables, No spice a little bland. Jalapeño sauce on table had crust around it so wouldn't use. Friendly staff and service. Lovely decorated restaurant but it was cold sitting inside.

I recently dined at Chiquito restaurant and was impressed by the staff and authentic dishes. The guacamole was fresh, and the salsa had the right balance of heat. The steak fajitas were perfect. The atmosphere was lovely as the overall dining experience. I highly recommend it for anyone craving delicious Mexican cuisine.

I have always loved this place but today’s experience has completely put me off. Restaurant was cold. Service was extremely slow. Taco starter was disgusting. Slopped on and covered in squirty cheese ( the kind you get in a bottle). Beef chilli on top was non existent. I noticed other people left theirs too. Ordered fajitas and chicken was overcooked and dry. Fajitas came wrapped up and were stuck together and wet. Very overpriced for slop which is what we got. Unfortunately it was so bad I was sick.

The waiter had to come back twice as they didn't have what I ordered. They gave me a free salad to say sorry. The bass was nice, just a very small portion for the price. Waited ages for the bill, ended up putting my coat on as a clue. Probably wouldn't go back.

Very good atmosphere, excellent food. Very good vegetarian/vegan options. The roasted veggies on my salad, recommended by the chef, were amazing. Laura was exceptionally friendly and went above and beyond to ensure we had everything we needed, making our time there truly enjoyable.

Visited for a lunch. Both had the had sea bass- amazing! Cooked to perfection and the red chilli’s were hot! Really pleased given that it’s not a fish restaurant. Good service and not pushy to buy more.

The server was lovely, there was a lot of vegetarian/vegan menu choice, the food was presented well, some of it was nice, it’s quite basic though. The disabled toilets however, were indescribably filthy.

Came to a reliable restaurant and was absolutely gobsmacked at how poor the service and food was. Took 25 minutes for our drinks to get to the table (a coke and Diet Coke) when there was 4 other tables here. Food came very quickly afterwards unfortunately it was the most tasteless food I’d ever eaten water pouring out of my chicken. An ungodly amount of salt in my spoonful of coleslaw and the driest corn on the cob ever. Staff gave all disappeared behind the bar haven’t even asked about the food or if we even wanted a refil on our drinks or any sauces so disappointed.

Hi all. It was my stay-at-home son’s (Paul’s) 25th birthday last week and we went to this jaw dropping restaurant in Eldon Square, Newcastle (howay the lads ⚫️⚪️). The cheesy tortilla garlic thing changed his entire life. The cheese absorbed into his tongue, the crunch echoed through his ear canal and the garlic was good enough to scare away vampires - my wife wouldn’t kiss me for three days (maybe this is an issue with our marriage😉). The staff were superb and I even took a cheeky pic with a sombrero 😜🌮. This meal truly transported me to Cancun and was way cheaper than a plane ticket ✈️. Came for dinner. Had the idea while I was struggling with the heat quayside that I would quite like "Mexican" for dinner. That is distinctly American style Mexican but the seed was sown. A quick search found me Chiquito as a rated place. Took me *ages* to find it. Not exactly what I was expecting, this was quite like the franchises you find in Airports around the globe. Small "botique" versions of a more recognisable restaurant name. Found it nestled among other "Americana" food joints... Ok. Pleasant enough greeting staff after they got around to greeting me I was led to a table and given menus. I ordered the "classic" Margurita and decided upon Quesadilla pork carnitas. This is where I was asked how I wanted my Margurita. "Quickly, cold and in VAST volume" didn't seem like the appropriate reply. So I asked for it with ICE. The drink came very quickly but the volume was disappointing. (Truth to be told this is my first solo venture to a Mexican joint so a single whiskey tumber of ice and the drink did not match up to the Jugs I last had at the O2 before the Python extravaganza. ) Said drink was *very* delicious and my Quesadilla arrived whilst I was still working my way through my first. The food was very nice and I really liked the spice level with thin slices of chilli on it. It *exactly* hit the spot so I finished my drink. Requested the bill, settled up and left. (p.s. I did tip - food and service V Good) TLDR This was a quick bight to eat while shopping type experience. Not an "I really fancy *desired food* " experience. These are *NOT* the same thing and perhaps this was the moment when I realised that any "desired experience" requires, at least, some planning and preparation. Underwhelmed. Though this is likely *MY* problem not the venue.

Went tonight with my kids for the first time and the food was amazing. Service was outstanding. They missed off a burger patty in my daughters Texas stack burger and before we had time to ask them they were at the table and apologising and made up for it for us. Will be going back for sure.

Popped in at lunchtime as a spur of the moment thing. Greeted by a young waitress called Megan who was vey friendly and helpful as we had not visited this restaurant before. One minor possible complaint, don’t go here if you are in a hurry but if you want a leisurely friendly meal I can highly recommend it for Mexican type food. Again Megan featured high in our estimation as she refilled my husband’s soft drink without us needing to ask. She made sure we were happy with our food and was as I said very friendly

Steak was decent. While the staff was friendly and hospitable, they did take their own sweet time to serve the beers on a quiet afternoon and a near empty place. Nice ambience and well laid booths. Enjoyed the spanish beer.

Got seated straight away, ordered drinks and food, didn't have to wait long. Food outstanding, service excellent, prices fair. Recommend.

Guess they only value large tables so they can slap a service charge on them. When you ask a server if you can place your order, you receive a condescending “I am busy right now, ok!”. Throwing our dishes on our table instead of just setting them down, slamming down the card machine .. it was so bad that it was borderline hilarious! Perhaps one of the most appalling services I have ever experienced. It’s a pity because in the team, there was actually only one server who I saw really work really hard and efficiently. The rest of the team were happy to don a ‘don’t care’ attitude. Best to order takeaway if you really want the food here, give the eat-in experience a big miss for your own good.

Had lunch here yesterday(and a few cocktails!).2nd visit here in a month.I can highly recommend this place for the food,the staff(and the cocktails!). We were served yesterday by Laura who was very polite and attentive.The manager,Meghan,also checked on us a few times asking if everything was ok.lt is lovely to experience good service in a very clean and comfortable environment.Most importantly,the food was delicious.We chose from the lunch menu and could only manage one course.Great value for money.Will definitely be back soon..There are many restaurants competing for our custom in Newcastle.This is definitely worth a visit.Thanks everyone.

Very delicious food. We ordered vegan nachos and vegan enchiladas. Both were full of flavour. Really enjoyed there.

Lovely meal with superb service from Meg, who went above and beyond to give us a special lunch as she knew we were celebrating, including an unexpected dessert treat 😁 . We particularly appreciated the choice on the menu of vegan/vegetarian dishes, and the mocktails were beautifully presented and good value. We went on a Friday lunchtime and the atmosphere was very pleasant, with several families, would recommend.

Food was not nice steak was basically all gristle and no flavour at all. We asked for the other food to be all separate in the bowl and it was a heap on each other. Chef had a face on him the whole time but the only best thing was the waiters as they were nice and polite.

This place was really a let down. The food was cold, service was very slow. Staff all friendly however it took 20/25 minutes after we finished to get the bill and we had to ask 3 times. Dissatisfied really.

Regular food and unsatisfactory service in a great decorated restaurant. Highlights: 1h to bring a kids meal (what?) and about 20 minutes for the coke…

The food was nice but I paid 15 pound for 2 wraps woth the smallest amount of beef in. No salad, no filler, no side. It was so expensive. Nice food but I wouldn't get it again because the price just wasn't worth it Fab staff and a fab atmosphere. You need to offer more for the cost though

Visited last week with a few friends and had an amazing night! I wasn’t too sure what to order from the menu as they is a wide variety which caters for all however, a member of staff, Liepa pointed out the chicken fajitas, which were lovely!
