Nicest chips in Manchester - I used to go to Hip hop chip shop and it's still a nice venue but The chips at No8 are hands down the best in town. They also have nice beer and wines so a perfect venue for a snack and drink.

My experience at chips @ no.8 was nothing short of exceptional. I was recommended by a work colleague who insisted I had to go and bring my fiancée and said she had left my a gift voucher at the till. When we arrived there was no seating available so we were just going to get takeaway, but the owner (I believe) insisted they would accommodate us and we had a table almost instantly. The service was both fast and friendly. When it came to food, we had the “Frickles”, crab cakes, fish, and poutine. When I say this was some of the most delicious “chippy” food I’ve ever had I am likely underselling it. The Frickles were light, nicely coated, non-greasy and tasty. The fish, likewise was not greasy and fell apart in your mouth, whilst maintaining a crisp batter. The stars of the show were the crab cakes and the poutine. I am Canadian, so I’ve had some amazing crab cakes and poutine, but I’d say these were some of the best. The crab cakes were packed with flavour, soft, yet held their texture whilst the poutine had crisp chips with soft interiors, rich smooth gravy, and mouth watering meat on top. I probably could go on and on about this place, but I’ll leave it at that. The food, accommodation, and its reviews speak for themselves. I can already see myself returning very soon.

Absolutely spectacular! Upon entering the establishment I was immediately greeted with a smile by the ladies at the till. I was then promptly delivered the most amazing experience I’ve ever had when ordering food. The food in question was very quick and very tasty. I recommend the kids chicken nuggets and chips. Very happy that there was no judgment when ordering from the kids menu as I have a small appetite. It is like heaven in a chippy.

We had two large portions of chips (£8.60 for both) which were okay, nothing special. We had to wait some time, and with the chippy having received so many glowing reviews, I expected the chips to be fairly fresh from the deep frier, hot and moist. Unfortunately, these must have been sitting in the basket for some time, still okay to eat and only just warm enough but not brilliant. Would go back to Armstrong's next time.

The place is warm and tastefully decorated spotless clean, good background music. On the whole fantastic place , we will definitely be going back there. I can 100 % recommend this restaurant. Proper chippy. Proper nosh. Proper tasty. And now they do chicken!!!!! Updated October 24 because Google asked me if it had changed? Well, yes it's changed. It's not at Number 8, for one thing. But that's only the start. They've moved next door (is it 6 or 10?) and moved upstairs and generally moved up in the world. Wherever Dan finds the young and enthusiastic staff for front of house, we'll done. Order taken, order paid, order served. Faultless. Gone are the church hall style table and chairs and there's a touch of leather and oak. There's enough room to queue inside, not on the street, a hatch to collect and a bingo display board to announce the lucky winner of the next box of delights. The old favourites are there, as well as tweaks and new additions. There's a mini bar for beers and wines and the disco ball. And the tunes. Tonight, Matthew, I shall be eating haddock and chips with a grandad sausage. You can still see where the fish was caught and when and where the spuds were grown. Independently run hospitality should be cherished and not taken for granted. You'll not find a better batter beater, nor a faster fryer at the range. As Mr Ashcroft said, I'm a lucky man. But then, he's from Wigan, so probably prefers pies.

I've been a big fan of this place for their traditional fish and chips. They have opened a cafe upstairs with an interesting menu. Mostly very good. I had Poutine a dish with brisket stew poured over chips and covered with cheese curds - very tasty. Tacos starter very good and zingy. Others in my party had moules frites, which was a large portion for £11 and were good. Crab cakes were excellent, but needs to be ordered with an accompanying salad. Fish croquettes used batter rather than traditional bread crumbs which didn't quite work for me. Just love the fact that this place is taking risks. The cafe is a lovely space, with fantastic service from the young staff.

Hearing about a traditional fish and chip shop in Prestwich, complete with a restaurant and bar, and cooking in beef-dripping with the option for vegetable oil (call to confirm vegetable oil availability), I was compelled to check it out. Upon entering the shop, I found myself in the bar area, with access to the restaurant located upstairs. The bar was furnished with tables, chairs, and stools for those wishing to enjoy a drink or avoid the stairs. It is encouraging to see young people engaged in the fish and chip shop trade, potentially leading to more traditional establishments in the future. The cod, although slightly smaller than expected, was delicious and cooked to perfection. The chips were among the best I’ve had in a long time. The pea fritters, black pudding fritters, and tartare sauce were also excellent. In-house pies were available as well, so I sampled the cheese and onion and meat and potato varieties and can recommend both. There is parking available across the street and on-street. However, the opening hours might not suit those looking for a lunchtime meal, as at the time of this review, the hours are Tuesday to Saturday from 4:30 PM to 8:30 PM, and closed on Sunday and Monday. One of the top 20 fish and chip shops in the country, and I'd agree with that. Superb fish and chips, and now they've moved to bigger premises with a chippy, small bar and restaurant upstairs. We had a fantastic meal at Kitchen @No.8, the sit in restaurant at Chips. Everyone was very friendly and couldn't do enough for us or the other customers I could see. The service was friendly and efficient, our food came out quickly and was fantastic. My partner had the poutine and I had the hot honey chicken... Some of the best chicken I've ever had the chef knocked that dish out of the park. Wonderful crispy, light batter and tender chicken. The poutine was amazing, the gravy had so much flavour and it being made with brisket and proper cheese curds shows how serious they are about quality ingredients. The chips as most people should know we're wonderful, best chips I've had. All in all, I think it should be somewhere anyone visiting Manchester should visit. A special mention for the salmon plate we were lucky enough to sample. Beautifully done salmon and insane pickles. 10/10

We really REALLY enjoyed our trip to Chips @ No 8. I visited for the first time with my family from Hong Kong and expected it to only be a greasy takeaway. We were pleasantly surprised to find a modern, clean shop with a couple of tables and stools to sit at providing the option to dine in - we didn't have to eat our chips in the car like we planned!:D They are deserving of every accolade they have won because the chips are so flavourful and the batter on the fish was fresh, super tasty, and cooked perfectly. Service was friendly and professional despite the crowd of people waiting for their orders to take away. They brought our meals to our table with a lovely smile and we were super impressed by the level of wonderfulness that we experienced on our trip. As a local, I will definitely be taking all my friends. My Hong Kong visitors are leaving the UK with a vivid and wonderful chippy tea that I think represents high quality, delicious English fare on an international scale. UPDATE, June 2024: They've recently moved next door but they are still amazing! There's more seating too and for those of you who are interested - there's a bar! Hoorah! I have eaten food from No.8 several times. However, last nights serving of chips was disappointing. I ordered a small portion of chips for £2.90, not cheap and expected more than one scoop of chips in a tray. I saw a young assistant approx. 17/18 years old scoop chips into a tray not realising they were mine. I thought maybe I had only seen the second scoop, but no. Very disappointing to find a half empty tray of chips when I got home. I have to say this is the first time this has happened. Perhaps the owner can speak with this assistant or at least observe what she is doing. All other food items were really good.

Following the press coverage and local chatter I went to try this place out. I went in about 6.30pm on a weekday. What a let down. The first thing you get is the ridiculously loud music blaring away as you walked in. The extremely young female staff seemed more interested in talking to each other than serving. No greeting or ‘please’ or ‘thank you’. I ordered the standard fish and chips. The chips were tiny, little more than scraps. The fish was more batter than fish. I’m convinced the only reason people go to this place is because there in no other ‘chippy’ in Prestwich village. It’s a back street chippy charging city centre prices. It is vastly over priced and over hyped, a case of ‘The Emperor’s new clothes’. Avoid !

Had to try this place having heard so much about it, however much to my great disappointment I found nothing special about this fish and chips experience other than the fryer/owner saying hello as soon as I went up to the counter. Firstly parking anywhere near without going on double yellow lines was an issue. I was then ignored for a while waiting at the counter to be served, the staff seemed to be preoccupied with other matters. The main issue for me and my family was the bland taste and the adding of a slice of lemon in the box made it just weird! Not cheap either at nearly £10 for fish and chips. I have been to hundreds of fish shops in my life time and still nothing beats Scarborough, Bridlington Harbour and Hull, all on the east coast.

Lightly battered fish available upon request. The beef drippings added a whole new level of flavour. I had an absolutely fantastic experience at this fish n chips restaurant! From pre-ordering 10 items, including 9 fish n chips and 1 Halumi, the correspondence was top-tier. The staff provided excellent guidance on menu choices and answered all my questions via Messenger. They even went the extra mile by bringing my order to my car. Compliments all around for the outstanding service and delicious food!

I've had fish, chips and mushy peas three times from No 8, and it's been consistently delicious. The batter has that lovely crunch, the chips are not soggy, and the mushy peas melt in your mouth. The staff are friendly and efficient. The food is fresh and so tasty. It's up there with the Magpie in Whitby.

Well executed fish and chips, good sauces. One of the better ones I've had, but wouldn't say it's top50 UK.

Just had 2 cod and chips, a sausage and 2 gravies, food was great, not cheap but as I work with food myself you can tell it's good quality fish, great batter... Two good looking girls 😉 at counter, polite and friendly. Would recommend and definitely will see me again. Just been again, so warm inside but just as nice as last time.

Best fish and chips in Manchester. Freshly made for each order. The mushy peas are also the best, I’m not even really a fan of mushy peas generally but these are amazing

It looks delicious….and it was. Superb, quality food from Chips at No.8 even though the place was very busy, as usual. Thanks Dan and your team of Happy Frying Helpers. 😂👍

The best chippy I've been to, hands down. Well sourced produce, cooked to perfection. Plus as an Easter treat, battered Creme eggs. They have no right to be as tasty as they are.

Just had 2 lots of fish and chip...very soggy, greasy batter on fish, stuck to the chips, couldn't get it out of box in one piece..thought batter was supposed to be crispy..absolutely terrible..

I've been eating at this place for years and never got round to leaving a review, so here it is... I've been eating here for a good 10 years, that says it all. See you next weekend.

Excellent fish and chips. The only criticism I have is that the shop is very small and not much room to move while waiting.

Ordered from this place too many times. I was considered there number one customer.
