Excellent chippy the best in Manchester

Just dined in for the first time and loved it, tried the poutine and fish taco's and on par if not better than anything in the NQ and great service. The best fish & chips in Manchester by far.

10 stars 🌟 Words alone can not describe. People of Google... Go Get Chips! We had Rag Puddings, Chips and Gravy. I think we all did a lil sigh and that extatic eye closed thingy that people usually only do in films. For 1st time in years: silence at the dinner table. Much scarfin going on! Winner!

I'd heard very good things about this place so I had to try it. Maybe it was just the hype as it was very busy. But it was just alright

We visited the new dining area at Chips at No. 8 and were incredibly impressed. The food was delicious - the best chips and sticky toffee pudding we’ve ever eaten - with a really good choice of options on the menu. The new dining area is beautifully decorated, comfortable and welcoming, we felt right at home. The staff are extremely friendly, attentive and knowledgeable and went out of their way to accommodate us with a pram. Some of the best customer service we’ve ever received. We enjoyed our first visit so much, that we returned less than a week later for a family celebration meal. Thank you Chips at No. 8 - a new favourite in Prestwich.

Fantastic chippy, my new favourite. Love the new shop, freshly cooked with a few tables to perch at to eat your take away (without eating in). If you want posher sit down there's tables upstairs.

Hearing about a traditional fish and chip shop in Prestwich, complete with a restaurant and bar, and cooking in beef-dripping with the option for vegetable oil (call to confirm vegetable oil availability), I was compelled to check it out. Upon entering the shop, I found myself in the bar area, with access to the restaurant located upstairs. The bar was furnished with tables, chairs, and stools for those wishing to enjoy a drink or avoid the stairs. It is encouraging to see young people engaged in the fish and chip shop trade, potentially leading to more traditional establishments in the future. The cod, although slightly smaller than expected, was delicious and cooked to perfection. The chips were among the best I’ve had in a long time. The pea fritters, black pudding fritters, and tartare sauce were also excellent. In-house pies were available as well, so I sampled the cheese and onion and meat and potato varieties and can recommend both. There is parking available across the street and on-street. However, the opening hours might not suit those looking for a lunchtime meal, as at the time of this review, the hours are Tuesday to Saturday from 4:30 PM to 8:30 PM, and closed on Sunday and Monday. We love the place, staff and food delicious. We took fish & chips, haddock.

One of the top 20 fish and chip shops in the country, and I'd agree with that. Superb fish and chips, and now they've moved to bigger premises with a chippy, small bar and restaurant upstairs. It's right next to the old shop. Recommended, and I'm an addict. Only one improvement, and that's to increase the portion of chips served. I know costs are rising, but I would prefer more chips (as you used to do).

There's fish and chips, then there's proper fish and chips. The taste, the freshness, the quality. Al. The rest are cheap imitations. Prestwich deserves Chips@No.8

We had a fantastic meal at Kitchen @No.8, the sit in restaurant at Chips. Everyone was very friendly and couldn't do enough for us or the other customers I could see. The service was friendly and efficient, our food came out quickly and was fantastic. My partner had the poutine and I had the hot honey chicken... Some of the best chicken I've ever had the chef knocked that dish out of the park. Wonderful crispy, light batter and tender chicken. The poutine was amazing, the gravy had so much flavour and it being made with brisket and proper cheese curds shows how serious they are about quality ingredients. The chips as most people should know we're wonderful, best chips I've had. All in all, I think it should be somewhere anyone visiting Manchester should visit. A special mention for the salmon plate we were lucky enough to sample. Beautifully done salmon and insane pickles. 10/10

Correct as of July 2024. Saturday evening, not finding a phone number for them on the delivery applications, went on for a takeaway. They were busy and so, naturally, there was a queue and slight waiting time. However,,, totally worth it! Good portions of nice chunky chips, and nice, light, and fluffy, fish with a lovely buttery batter coating. FYI: we had the cod in vegetable oil. On site dining is available (IE. They have a restaurant there as well now). Great value for money as well.

The best gf chippy I've ever been to by a distance

Not your usual chippy eater, but came based on a recommendation from close family. Safe to say, I was not disappointed at all. The food was absolutely delicious and fairly priced in my opinion. If I could give a higher rating for the service I would. We were politely greeted upon arrival and promptly seated. Order taken quickly and staff were very happy. Overall, brilliant experience and will definitely be coming back soon!

Absolutely fantastic place. Came to sit in on a Friday night, the wait time was only 15/20 minutes for a table of four. Waiter was extremely friendly and very knowledgeable on the menu/types of fish served. Prices are reasonable and great value for money. The haddock was juicy and cooked to perfection and the chips were delicious. Curry sauce just right and mushy peas a great addition to the meal. (I highly recommend the garlic mayo!!!!!) Would definitely come back again and try takeaway as well. Everything was fantastic.

Real quality food and the fact that things are cooked in beef dripping makes it even better. Honestly this is the nicest chippy I've ever been to I can’t recommend it enough

Had heard all the hype so gave it a try. Wasn't as nice as anticipated. Chips were very dry and the fish was small for the price.

We went for a family meal at the new Chip@No8 restaurant. The fish was fresh and the kids loved the sausage and chips. We treated ourselves to a tasty glass of wine. Would highly recommend the chocolate brownie and ice cream to finish

Wonderful disco chippy. Now with a good restaurant upstairs and a bar downstairs. As popular as ever.

We dined in tonight and food was as good as fish and chips can get, staff were all friendly and enthusiastic. Vibe feels just right. If you are like us and have enjoyed the takeaway for a long time, do yourself a favour and eat in.

Food was tasty, but the portion sizes are very small. I've never had such a small cod, and the large chips were... Not.

We really REALLY enjoyed our trip to Chips @ No 8. I visited for the first time with my family from Hong Kong and expected it to only be a greasy takeaway. We were pleasantly surprised to find a modern, clean shop with a couple of tables and stools to sit at providing the option to dine in - we didn't have to eat our chips in the car like we planned!:D They are deserving of every accolade they have won because the chips are so flavourful and the batter on the fish was fresh, super tasty, and cooked perfectly. Service was friendly and professional despite the crowd of people waiting for their orders to take away. They brought our meals to our table with a lovely smile and we were super impressed by the level of wonderfulness that we experienced on our trip. As a local, I will definitely be taking all my friends. My Hong Kong visitors are leaving the UK with a vivid and wonderful chippy tea that I think represents high quality, delicious English fare on an international scale. UPDATE, June 2024: They've recently moved next door but they are still amazing! There's more seating too and for those of you who are interested - there's a bar! Hoorah! Make sure there are plenty of interesting non-alcoholic drinks for us non-drinkers!

Best chippy I’ve ever been to! I have been regularly going there for a couple of years now, and I’ve never had a bad experience. If you get the opportunity to order a battered Creme Egg from this place, don’t pass the opportunity up!

Definitely the best fish and chips I've ever had, and I'm from Blackpool. The fish is super crispy and the chips are cooked to perfection. You don't get that nauseated feeling after, like with other fish and chips.

Used to be regular when it first opened but during covid moved, first time tried again in over 4 years and just wished l lived near this chippy, chicken burger was excellent, fish fresh and crispy, chips and mushy peas perfect, curry sauce different to your usual chippy, highly recommend

Corner seating nice view of the neighbourhood. Truly great taste cod and haddock with chips. Fry chicken surprisingly tasty, perfect match with a coke. Cannot get anything better than that.

First time and last time.Chips were horrible and had hard edges,fish was ok but had aftertaste of oil,mushy peas were good.

I have eaten food from No.8 several times. However, last nights serving of chips was disappointing. I ordered a small portion of chips for £2.90, not cheap and expected more than one scoop of chips in a tray. I saw a young assistant approx. 17/18 years old scoop chips into a tray not realising they were mine. I thought maybe I had only seen the second scoop, but no. Very disappointing to find a half empty tray of chips when I got home. I have to say this is the first time this has happened. Perhaps the owner can speak with this assistant or at least observe what she is doing. All other food items were really good.

First time here and it didn't disappoint. The staff are lovely. The ordering system is very efficient and although it was busy I didn't feel I waited that long. I had haddock and chips. The chips were amazing and the fish was just right. Portion size was just right too. My son and partner had jumbo sausage which were really good. Also great mushy peas, tartare sauce and curry sauce.

This is our no.1 choice for fish and chips. I rather have a very short wait that ensures, piping hot, freshly cooked fish & chips, than eating lukewarm food and limp chips. They were able to cook me a lightly battered fish and the portion size was very good. Mushy peas and tartare sauce were excellent too. Fantastic!

Best fish and chips I’ve ever had. Definitely will be coming back. Everything was made to perfection cannot state anything wrong. Only thing is they forgot to include 1 more set of cutlery. All in all an amazing place to eat.

The best fish and chips restaurant in the country. The fish are beautifully battered and presented while the chips are perfect (even next day air fried). But the offering does not stop there. Crispy fried chicken, robust pies, mushy pea fritters, sausages. Even on occasion a deep fried cream egg or mince pie. Vegetarian options available. Can't wait for exciting new developments in 2024.

Great food a little more expensive than most places but it's the taste that counts, I only gave 4 stars as I thought more chops could have been in the box .but tasted great .

I recently tried Chips @No.8 and was pleasantly surprised by the reasonable prices. I appreciated that they fry in veggie oil upon request, accommodating dietary preferences. The fish was wonderfully crispy, and the tartar sauce added a flavorful touch. A great spot for delicious and wallet-friendly fish and chips, especially for those with dietary considerations.

I've been going here since they opened and never have I been disappointed!!! Best chippy around and great people too !! My dog also loves the sausage from here too be rude not to get him something too.

Following the press coverage and local chatter I went to try this place out. I went in about 6.30pm on a weekday. What a let down. The first thing you get is the ridiculously loud music blaring away as you walked in. The extremely young female staff seemed more interested in talking to each other than serving. No greeting or ‘please’ or ‘thank you’. I ordered the standard fish and chips. The chips were tiny, little more than scraps. The fish was more batter than fish. I’m convinced the only reason people go to this place is because there in no other ‘chippy’ in Prestwich village. It’s a back street chippy charging city centre prices. It is vastly over priced and over hyped, a case of ‘The Emperor’s new clothes’. Avoid !

Best chippy I've been to yet, always a que from the minute they open but its worth it for a small wait time. Get a pea fritter!!!

Had to try this place having heard so much about it, however much to my great disappointment I found nothing special about this fish and chips experience other than the fryer/owner saying hello as soon as I went up to the counter. Firstly parking anywhere near without going on double yellow lines was an issue. I was then ignored for a while waiting at the counter to be served, the staff seemed to be preoccupied with other matters. The main issue for me and my family was the bland taste and the adding of a slice of lemon in the box made it just weird! Not cheap either at nearly £10 for fish and chips. I have been to hundreds of fish shops in my life time and still nothing beats Scarborough, Bridlington Harbour and Hull, all on the east coast.

Been here twice and the food is absolutely gorgeous. We have had fish and chips with pea fritter. My husband is really fussy and he loves them which is incredible considering how faddy he is! Think the beef dripping makes them so delicious

Always fantastic food, never a disappointment

First time here. Ordered Cod and Chips, Rag Pudding, and the Fully Loaded chips. Everything was 10 out of 10. Portion sizes ample. Only a few seats available and can get very busy, so ate in and had takeaway too. No WiFi at location. No phone so no phone ahead orders at this time. Love that the ingredients are sourced locally. Lightly battered fish available upon request. The beef drippings added a whole new level of flavour. The loaded chips were absolutely fantastic - like having a delicious lasagna but made with chips instead of pasta. The taste of fennel really came through and was so smooth. Thank you Chips @ no. 8 for fresh food, a clean restaurant, and of course excellent service even though it was at the end of a long day.

My favourite chippy in the northern half of the UK!

Whilst I admit this isnt the cheapest in the Prestwich area, the food is excellent. The portions are not stingy but not overfacing either. My 1st visit, had the Steak and Stout pie with chips and its one of the best pies. Recently had fish and chips. I've no idea what is in the fish batter, but it tasted amazing. I will return!

I had an absolutely fantastic experience at this fish n chips restaurant! From pre-ordering 10 items, including 9 fish n chips and 1 Halumi, the correspondence was top-tier. The staff provided excellent guidance on menu choices and answered all my questions via Messenger. They even went the extra mile by bringing my order to my car. Compliments all around for the outstanding service and delicious food!

I've had fish, chips and mushy peas three times from No 8, and it's been consistently delicious. The batter has that lovely crunch, the chips are not soggy, and the mushy peas melt in your mouth. The staff are friendly and efficient. The food is fresh and so tasty. It's up there with the Magpie in Whitby.

Well executed fish and chips, good sauces. One of the better ones I've had, but wouldn't say it's top50 UK.

Just had 2 cod and chips, a sausage and 2 gravies, food was great, not cheap but as I work with food myself you can tell it's good quality fish, great batter... Two good looking girls 😉 at counter, polite and friendly. Would recommend and definitely will see me again. Just been again, so warm inside but just as nice as last time.

The best chippy I've been to, hands down. Well sourced produce, cooked to perfection. Plus as an Easter treat, battered Creme eggs. They have no right to be as tasty as they are.

The best chippy in Prestwich! No, the best chippy in Manchester. The Black Pudding Fritters are fantastic. 😋 This chippy continues to go from strength-to-strength. I've never had a bad meal from here. Try the Rag Pudding. It can get real busy at times but the food is worth the wait. Treat yourself, you won't regret it

Best chip shop in the area, bar none. Excellent quality of fish with good sized portions of fish and chips. Friendly staff. Nice selection of sides as well (including deep-fried Creme Eggs when I went at Easter). Choice of cooking in either beef dripping (traditional and delicious!) or vegetable oil. My vegetarian companion had fried halloumi which was also delicious. Mostly just take-away - although there are a few seats these are usually filled with people waiting on their orders. - there are usually parking spaces in the evening at the small parking area opposite the shop, except at busy times.

Great to see gluten free options available, I got gf haddock and chips. So impressed no additional charge for GF either . Large potion of chip and as huge! That's only half on my plate! They also had some chicken in a GF cereal crispy coating.

Everyone tells me how nice this chippy is so it's about time I went. No8 is just off Bury New Road and is a lovely chippy, I had fish chips & curry and also a battered Cadbury creme egg which was in aid of a charity.

We all had chips/chips and gravy as in a rush. Gravy was ok, bog standard English chippy gravy, portions were very generous, but the chips were dreadful - tasteless, dry, rock hard and poorly prepared with eyes and skin. We chomped our way through them, those without the gravy desperately dipping chips in the others trays to save their teeth. So disappointed - having read the reviews we were expecting crispy, fluffy, melt in the mouth chips! We normally go to Hills (Middleton), another well regarded chippy - we've never been disappointed there. I don't understand all the positive reviews, look at my picture - (and my wife doesn't pick the bad ones out, that's just what she couldn't eat) - maybe thay had a bad day but that's a poor excuse, first and last visit for us I'm afraid.

After reading good review's I called in for fish, chips and peas, I didn't think it was anything special, the chips was really hard and the batter wasn't crispy, wont be recommending it to friends.

So after the rave reviews, we decided to try it! We’ve had much better haddock and chips from many other chippy’s, chips went hard as they began to cool and lacked seasoning, many chips were small bits and this let it down for me. The haddock was small and tbh nothing exciting….. we wouldn’t return. The hype was very overrated tbh.

Ate from here for the first time on Saturday. Food was barely cooked and gravy was too watery so ended up leaving most of it but still managed to give me food poisoning since the Sunday which ruined my whole Easter break. Stomach is still in agony and nearly £15 down! Iv ate grandads sausages before but these ones didn’t even taste similar

Fantastic chippy, faultless but be prepared to wait for a while as the queue was out the door and around the corner. But it was worth the wait, everything was fantastic.
