My husband and I went for a meal at Chippies Plaice yesterday. We received a warm welcome, the cafe was lovely and clean, the staff were very friendly and the food was excellent and served really tastefully, pun intended !

Very friendly staff and lovely clean tables, food excellent and not too expensive, would eat there again next time we are in Buxton.

Great food but the place is very small especially if eating in as people have to brush past you to get to the counter

A rare Saturday treat, thought we'd have good old fish and chips at Sam's Plaice as it called. First impressions, clean , nice wooden tables ,looks OK.. 2 of us sat down by the door the which, for some reason was wide open letting cold air in. Asked 3 times could we close it , to just be ignored.. closed it anyway. Next ordered 2 x fish and chips with gravy , 1 coffee and a can...£27.40!!!. Nearly fell through the floor. 5 mins later a shout came that we could collect our food , even with 3 staff doing nothing. Chips overcooked home made , gravy thick, fish could've been any species, but definitely wasn't cod. Batter was thick and hard. Overall disappointing. For £27.40 we at least expect good service and decent if not top notch food. Sadly this was poor at best. Wont be revisiting

Fish, chips and peas at nearly £13 was a big surprise. In truth it was quite nice, but at that price i wont be coming again.

Now changed it's name to Sam's Place hence why I couldn't see it on trip advisor before going in. Wished I hadn't! Very abrupt staff with a bad attitude, I asked if they did sparkling water - my reply was - all the drinks are in the fridge - have a look! Waiting ages for our food and only 2 tables in. To be fair the scampi was lovely and a generous portion but the service and attitude of the staff lets the place down massively. I will not be going back, there are so many nicer places in Buxton with nice pleasant staff.

staff are really rude and not interested! absolutely no customer service at all, (especially the girl with the red hair who shouts you food out) chips were hard aswell and the prices are absolutely ridiculous, not worth it all. wont be going back

Fish n chips for 2 plus 2 cans was £25!!! the food wasn't bad but not worth it at that price.

Went here today and we’re from out of the area so had no idea where to go. Food wasn’t too bad albeit a bit pricey but it’s what we expect to pay when we’re away from home anyway. However the atmosphere is awful when you have the manager talking to her staff like s**t, I had to bite my tongue the whole time we were there. It amazes me how the staff hadn’t got up and walked out and left her to do it alone. Really not nice to listen too when these people are just wanting to come to work and earn a bit of money

The place was clean and the food was good. But very expensive over 20 quid for two meals. Perhaps BoJo has a lot todo wth that. Could of had a little bit more help in where to go to order unable to visit again as its too dear for me unfortunately. Shame though as the chips are very goodquality.

Been a while since last visit. Name change and some new furniture. Same old customer-unfriendly interior layout. Sullen or oblivious young lasses serving with all the efficiency, enthusiasm and grace of terminally-ill SJWs. 22 quid for 2 very dreary small meals and drink. Shame there isnt competition in the town for this tourist-trap place's custom on a Sunday. Save your money. Avoid.

Terrible over priced food staff come across as rude and what sound to be the owner just stands shouting behind the counter shouting

Like it or not I judge Chips shops on their dish, Chips & curry sauce in a tray. This simple dish leaves them nowhere to hide. My chips were hot, with a great texture. The curry sauce tasted perfect, slightly fruity and not too spicy. I could have eaten in, but with the weather being so great, I enjoyed eating out in the sun.

I had full English at lunch. Bacon was crispy as I like it. All the food was perfectly cooked and very warm. Good black pudding as requested.

To be fair the food was nice tasting, but the price of the cod was a rip off. It was more like a jumbo fish finger and for £5.10 not good value. There were plenty of chips and the curry sauce was what you would expect from most English chips shops.

This is a horrible place to go, they charged us £17.40p for two portions of fish, chips you will ever see in your life. They don't even bring your fish and chips out to you here. Your number gets shouted out from behind the counter. A big shout rings out from the shop, sounds like a bingo caller on drugs"NUMBER EIGHT" which means come in get your stuff and take it to your table. The fish was bland no taste the total size of it was two split 3inch pieces of fish {BURNT} and the chips where all from at the bottom of the fryer, all scraps and sharp. This business is awful and the service is atrocious the cooking is amateur and the money you pay for what you get is a massive rip off. There is no pride or love going into this business,we feel cheated from the money we paid for the rubbish we where given to eat.Stay clear or suffer the consequences of being charged for a lot of money for a very unimpressive small plate of fish and chips, if that's what they call it.

Looks like yesterday's chips re cooked over priced can get better in Wilmslow for cheaper £4.50 for this and small bottle of coke avoid

young girl on the till has no idea of customer service - i said that we would sit at the table in front of her and asked if someone could clear away plates left by previous customers - it took about 15 mins for the dirty plates to be taken and only then when i asked another girl to take them, she seemed to think that these were our plates, and i explained that we were still waiting for our food. it seemed that they only cooked one order at a time, and had nothing cooked and on stand by in a busy time customers had to order and then wait outside because the stupid table inside where far too big for the inside space - what idiots run this place? they need to learn the value of an interior designer to allow for customers to sit in peice instead of having to keep moving to get served. will not be recommending this - food was not all that good, and if you in the area - i suggest you go to matlock bath and get really yummy fish and chips

Absolutely awful! Do not go!!!!! Stale food, bacon looked as if it was cooked in a microwave and they had run out of items before 12pm! There was a mountain of pre-made panninis just sitting in the chiller unwrapped going stale, with meat varieties touching non meat varieties! The woman running the establishment spoke terribly to her staff! Very degrading. This made the atmosphere very uncomfortable! The family sitting next to us were just as shocked as we were, this employer needs reporting! Looking around at other people meals we could see they were very poor quality like ours and most left almost a full plate of food! Bad value for money Bad atmosphere

"Sam's Plaice". Visited Buxton and stopped for fish and chips. £19 for 2 fish and chips and a couple drinks. Wow. This must be good I thought. How wrong could I have been. Fish was full of Bones, had to stop eating before I choked to death. Chips were not much better, over cooked, last chips in the fryer look. Staff were cold and uninviting, would not go back again.

Don't bother! Paid way over the odds (£14) for 2 mini fish and chips - when I say mini I mean 2 x fish fingers and a dozen chips each. Served by staff who seemed to have contempt for all customers they dealt with. My order for take away was shouted from the counter when everyone was out of the shop and left on the side to go cold with no guide from the server as to where to collect it. The gentleman before me seemed to have put the staff out by asking for ketchup and napkins! 2 stars hopefully allows people to take this review seriously (and the food did taste nice after all).

Went to Buxton for the day. Teatime decided I just fancied a bag of chips. Went to this place cos it said ‘award winning’. Must of won award for worst chips cooked in horrid oil that repeated on me all night! They were getting ready to close and they gave me all the little hard bits at the bottom of the tray. Something must have changed at Chppy's PlaiceI went today and ordered fish and chips and the staff were great with me, really friendly and happy and helpful.The fish and chips were honestly so good and tasted greatI just got back from buxton and found the reviews of this place and can't understand it at all - am staggered this place would get bad reviews when my experience was the opposite!

Very sullen staff making me feel very unwelcome! The word 'tea' was shouted when my drink was ready! Had to collect my food which was mediocre - peas were cold. Not the greatest culinary experience ever! Buxton is a great little town but this place (plaice!) lets it down......

Not been here for nearly 9 months, and i wont be rushing back. The fish and chips was very average and again not cheap. On the plus side the service was nice and friendly and the weather was nice and sunny as we sat outside.

The world’s most over priced, smallest and worst portion of fish and chips after a 20 minute wait. Plus, they were over cooked after that wait and very greasy, only ate half. I would NEVER go back here or recommend anyone to go here.

A quick visit with family as we fancied Fish n Chips, big mistake! mushy peas caked in salt, my sister in law returned her fish as it tasted more of salt than fish! Had a baked potato with tuna (tepid/bland) Husband has what can only be described as micro fish and chips, I enquired if it was a child’s portion to be told it wasn’t.Woman cooking the fish told me that’s what fish and chip shops serve in Buxton and I didn’t know what I was talking about ( I’m a trained fishmonger!!) nearly £8 for 15 chips and a bit of fish 2” long ( tail piece) covered in greasy batter! I was told it’s not the food your paying for but the premises!!! Avoid at all cost rip off and not very clean looking either

This place is a tourist trap the food is disgusting and then they charge you through the roof prices how on earth is the place open and funny side is they have a trip advisor sticker with 5stars they must have bought the sticker

This chip shop cafe looked ok so our family group went in for a nice choppy meal. When ordering I noticed it was rather dear, medium curry and chips costing £4.10. I decided to have a small fish and chips with peas, bread and a drink. When the meal came it was so small I thought it was a joke. It was on an oval saucer with about ten chips. There were various other problems with the rest of the order. I sent the very small fish and chips back and refused to pay for it. I later got a sausage roll from Greggs. When paying for the rest of the chip shop meal the lady tried to over-charge me.

I cannot believe this place is allowed to remain open! We only wanted a simple fish and chip lunch, nothing fancy, we ordered a regular fish with chips and mushy peas and steak & kidney pie with chips and gravy, the bill came to £18, thankfully we werent asked to pay when we ordered. When our food turned up I commented that I had been given a children's meal, the fish was little bigger than a fish finger, tiny portion of chips and a snot of mushy peas, the Wife had as few chips as me, a tiny pie and the merest splatter of thick glutinous gravy, the waitress told us these were the correct meals and if we had a problem we would have to speak to the manager, we told her we weren't paying for it and left.

We went in for fish and chips order the board meal it read mini fish ,chips and peas bread butter drink o tea drink we presumed it was a mini fish but the rest was portions as usual. Well I think they taking the Mick it was served on a saucer type plate approx 10 chips tiny fish and teaspoon of peas!! I almost thought it was a joke I did mention we thought just the fish was mini the chap said oh did you and laughed what a rip off I will say we were able to take 2 dogs in and the tiny meal we had was nice ,they must be making alot of money on these tiny meals! Will not go again we are regular visitors so they have missed alot of trade !

This has to be up there with the worst chippy I’ve ever visited.Visited today ( carnival day ) walked past so many other food establishments and really wish I’d of just gone to the burger van up the road.Very expensive for what you get.2 small sausages and chips and gravy. Cost £5.50!!!!!In our local chippy for that we can get chips and gravy, chips and curry and 2 large sausages!The chips were well over cooked and didn’t even resemble chips. Most of them seemed like the bits out the bottom of the fryer.Hardly no gravy, the sausages were ok but very overpriced. Portion sizes far too small.We come to Buxton carnival every year and I’m glad I now know to avoid this chippy. Wish I’d of read other reviews before visiting.The young lady serving was very polite but that’s the only plus.

Friendly service & they do a really tasty Scampy, chips & gravy!

Went in for a ‘quick’ dinner with the kids. The place was dirty and run down and after ordering I quickly realised that it was not a good cafe/restaurant. I was served a greasy sausage on a plate then the chips for myself and the children on another. Not too sure why they expected me to dish out the food onto the plates? I was then given warmed up gravy from the microwave in a tea cup! The woman and man behind the counter were rude and clearly had no customer service skills. However the young boy was who served us was nice and polite. When I went to pay the bill I was surprised at the extortionate price...I wish I had never gone in there I can’t believe they charge people so much for such an awful service. Don’t waste your money there.

We both had chicken burgers and chips and a coffee each. The coffee was unpleasant. The chicken burgers were the cheapest you could get. The chips were disgusting, wrinkled and obviously the left overs from lunchtime reheated. We were charged over 16 pounds for this. We were not expecting fine dining but how anyone could serve this without complete embarrassment is incredible. Avoid at all costs!

Have visited a couple of times now and the fish and chips are beautiful.... and coming from stoke on trent I certainly know my fish and chips!!!! not a hint of grease and all cooked fresh, and reasonably priced. The owner and her staff are friendly and efficient and the service is brilliant and everywhere is spotless...... it’s dog friendly also and our little Pip loves it there.

Average food served in fairly pleasant but busy and cluttered restaurant area. Chips were OK but large fish was massively overcooked and the batter too hard and thick. Service was good and the staff all seemed fairly friendly. Between us we had a large fish and chips with baked beans, a regular sized portion of chips and gravy and 2 cups of tea. I nearly laughed out loud when I was charged £20.05 and we left full but not particularly satisfied. Wished we'd gone to the pub a couple of doors down who were offering 2 meals for a tenner.

Hard jacket potato, part warmed in microwave, nice chilli con carne. High prices not sure if they were correct. Small fish, nothing special. What happened? This was a busy café with good food a couple of years ago.

Was charged £18 for TWO horrid meals! The Chips were stale and overcooked; the mushy peas were congealed; the cheese & onion pie looked like it had been cremated in the microwave. And the so-called Full-Size Fish costing £4.80 was about the size of a small battered sausage and swimming in grease! The young waitress looked quite embarrassed when she put down the two plates of muck in front of us.

I cannot honestly say that the place was awful or do not bother. When I arrived it was clean and we were served by a pleasant waitress. On the menu on the wall it said they had haddock, as well as cod. They only had cod which was a little dissapointing, and no plaice even though they had this as part of the name.

It was terrible; tasted vile 🤢. Chips were not fresh It was ridiculously overpriced- paid over £12 for 2 small chips, a sausage and a fish cake. Save your money and go elsewhere!

Ordered special basically fish dinner with drink . We got a fish or should I say a third of a fish a quater portion of chips and mushy peas ,one round of nasty white bread and butter. Very very poor. Extremely over priced. Go to Wetherspoons instead or anywhere else. Last stop if everything else shut.

Called in thinking a cheap quick lunch, quick, it wasn't, took over 10mins for two mugs of tea, ordered chips and gravy twice (we are from macc) that took another 15min,it wasn't busy, two side plates arrived with what looked to like me like half a portion ! Still thought good for the diet. The food was ok, best bit the gravy, chips needed a bit longer, but the price!! £11.50, worked out, each small side plate, and one mug of bog standard tea cost £5.75 each.. Really not worth it!!!

Chippy but advertise as a restaurant as well, Thought we try the full English , It was vile. Breakfast was all deep fried just horrible & expensive , In fact I regret paying for it.

We arrived and sat down on scruffy ripped chairs. Looking over I saw that the next table had full English breakfasts and decided to have that, so when one of the miserable looking staff members came over thats what I asked for but was informed that it was only until 12.00pm and although it was only about 12.05pm and they were still doing all the items that go on a all day breakfast but in bap form I didn't bother arguing and ordered a baked potato instead. When the food arrived my daughters chips looked old and overdone and she tried one and left them all, my partners bacon was all fat and my daughters boyfriends chicken burger was quarter the size of the bap. I went to the toilet before leaving to find the toilet seat virtually hanging off. We wont be returning.

Got fish & chips to take out. Absolutely disgusting! All soggy & swimming in grease. Chips looked like the frying oil never get changed. Stuff went straight in the bin. Normally I would go back and return it but I was too far away from the place. What a joke. Never again :(

We chose this chippy as it seemed busy and we wanted a quick, cheap bite to eat before a long drive home. To be fair the food wasn’t bad, we had two plates of fish and chips and one slice of bread. We had to wait a while for two lemonades. However, when we paid the bill was £20! Considering we could get the same food with much more generous portions from the local we wouldn’t ever go back to this one. For bog standard chippy food it’s just not worth it.

We asked if it was ok to sit and just have a drink and the said no problem. Others eating said the food was very good. The staff were excellent and although it was close to closing time we weren’t rushed.

Poor quality fish and chips with bread smeared in Stork margarine, avoid this place. My bill was almost £25 for regular fish and chips T and bread n butter, small fish and chips and chips peas gravy. For an extra 5er we could have gone to a wonderful wine bar nearby for a proper continental lunch. The T was like dish water and the place needs a clean and or upgrade. Mushy peas were a grenn hard mass over microwaved. Overall, Horrible at best.

Absolutely minging springs to mind. Black re cooked chips that had mushrooms with them? Yes mushrokms. The burger was like dog meat and the barms were out of date with the cheapest butter ever on them. Tge staff were rude and the price was outrageous. Dont even bother...

Food is expensive and usually poor. They do have outside seating and it can be nice in the summer if the food is OK which is always hit and miss. Probably the worst chippy in Buxton

My daughter and myself visited Chippy's on Saturday 7th April 2018. When the food arrived, my fish looked "good enough to eat"! We'd ordered 2 cod with small chips and peas, plus 2 teas. There were special offers which included bread & butter @ £7.45 but we just opted for 3 basic items. Tea was lukewarm, chips were dried up - some were even black! Peas were hot though! My daughter said her fish tasted 'off' and she left most of it - mine did seem quite nice to be fair - but there was a strange smell in the shop. Wasn't the smell of a chippy!

Took my grandson and it was a cold wet day so looking forward to it. The place was empty just us at 1.30 lunch time. No small portions of fish only large, never been in a cafe that doesn't do pensioners portions. The fish would have been £5.20 then chips then peas and a drink. So expensive. Sugar bowl on table dirty,I declined lunch however bought a child's sausage and chips sausage microwaved chips average and a drink £5.99. When I went to pay I saw a bucket of half cooked chips on the floor. This used to be good give it a miss

Por dónde empezar. . Hamburguesa y patatas fritas. Pedimos para mí y mi marido también tazas de té, eventualmente la hamburguesas y patatas fritas que llegamos eran terribles. Margarina barata era poner en la bap y las hamburguesas parecía ser recooked como las patatas fritas. Curiosamente, el café no olor de los olores que para nosotros fue extraño, ya que es una tienda de chips. La camarera era constantemente en su teléfono móvil y no estaba interesado en absoluto como era el tío detrás del mostrador. No hay mostaza estaba disponible para la hamburguesa. Sin condimentos en la mesa tuve que llegar a ellos de otra tabla. No había cubiertos ofrecidos (por esta vez había perdido la trama! ). Las tazas de té de vino cuando mi hiusband preguntamos dónde estaba su taza de té. Los inodoros. . Mientras mi marido. bien pagado la factura que era ridículamente caros me aventuré a la de arriba (no hay instalaciones para aseo cualquiera que no puedo subir las escaleras). No había papel higiénico en rollo. No hay relación también. Toalla para el secado de manos y no había secador de mano también. Desnudas bombillas. Marido me informaron que tenía que limpiar sus manos con papel higiénico en el caballeros como la toalla parecía asquerosa. Afortunadamente gel antibacteriano en el coche.
