Simply, the food is unbelievably overpriced. The food really isn’t very good; fish and chips is something available almost anywhere in the UK and the food here is simply worse and more expensive than most places. I don’t understand how anyone could charge £1.75 for a canned soft drink, or £1.75 for a measly portion of mushy peas - almost £2 for MUSHY PEAS! Also, the service is poor; it was dead and the two members of staff still couldn’t be bothered to bring the food over. I understand the need for the electronic beepers in busy periods, but they’re unnecessary when it’s quiet and the staff are stood chatting. Lastly, the wooden cutlery is a joke. My elderly uncle suffers from Parkinson’s and the flimsy wooden cutlery was useless to him. This is pathetic and caused only embarrassment and stress. We will never return, and I would urge anyone visiting the area to avoid McKays like the plague.

No volveremos

We were on our way home from the racing at Perth and stopped here for our supper. So much has improved since the new annex has been put in. Lovely food and the staff (Stuart) was very accommodating to our party of 8! Food arrived hot and plentiful. The only thing that we would suggest is if you are eating in, then maybe proper cutlery would be a better idea. Overall though, will return again.

We visited Pitlochry with friends (Scottish nationals) in October 2017 and they had raved about how Scottish fish and chips are better than Australia's. Unfortunately for them, they took us to McKays to get takeaway dinner of fish and chips. The meals were very small or extremely overpriced. The food tasted disgusting, wasn't nice to eat at all. Two of our party had stomach problems during the night, p[resumably from the dinner. Our Scottish friends returned to the shop the next day to advise the staff - who frankly didn't give a crap. We still rate Australian fish and chips at the top!

Stopped off in Pitlochry en route home and couldn't believe this was the same chip shop! Has had a major makeover and we enjoyed a very tasty fish super - served with fresh lemon and tartare sauce too! Not overpriced at £6.95 sitting in. Now has a coffee machine too and we enjoyed a cappucino. Staff a bit glum but imagine they are run off their feet at this time of year! Would definitely recommend.

Very good fish. If there is one complaint I have is that the portion of chips is far to big. Disappointed that we could not get a hot drink. Did advertise hot drinks when we asked we were told they did not have a machine. We thought they could have brought one from the restaurant. There was plenty of cold water and other cold drinks. Would eat there again but in the hotel. Very good for walkers and backpackers.

They worked hard for us to get our train and the food was pretty good. Wish we could have gone back to eat there but we were in a hurry and they came through for us. It was quick food but made to order and worth the extra few minutes over a fast-food place.

During our ten days in Scotland, we noticed that the inhabitants eat fish and chips the way we eat tacos and enchiladas in Texas, that is, we eat it as often as possible. So, we decided to try fish and chips, and we were not disappointed. The freshly cooked haddock was crispy, hot and delicious, and we even enjoyed the malted vinegar on the fish. However, we bought two orders and the fish was very large (you get your money's worth). The chips were also good. Service was quick and efficient, and we left satisfied, having checked one Scottish specialty off our list. Cullen Sink is next on the list.

After trying to order food that was no longer available i said i tell you what you have chips i will have those..the young man proceeded to fill a box with the chips that were in the warmer and hand it over to me I quickly covered them in salt and vinegar then remembered to ask how much?? the young man would not accept payment from me but offered instead a apology for not having what we wanted. On ordering i had asked for 2 sausage suppers to be asked if we would like our sausage battered (well obviously i dont come to a chippy not to have my sausage battered), had to wait around 15 minutes for the food even though the place was fairly quiet and the food was over priced especially since you only get 1 sausage with our suppers but what disapointed me the most is that i paid for what i thought was chippy brown sauce which is something i dont mind paying for because you wouldnt have any other brown sauce with a chippy but no i was handed 4 small sachets of HP brown sauce this is unacceptable and should be a crime and to top it off the food was poor and left a horrible taste in my mouth. The price is very average for their suppers but their soft drinks are over priced costing £1.75 for a small bottle of water. In my opinion the food was superb, an extremely large fish with plenty of chips and very fresh, I would definitely recommend to anyone who is new to this village. On a visit to Pitlochry, we made the mistake of going here to buy our tea instead of the other chippy as it looked rally busy. Big mistake! In our, local chippy a fish supper comes with loads of chips and 2 fillets of haddock all for £6 odds. In here you get 1 very thin fillet and a few chips. We ordered 2 fish suppers and a Battered sausage, 1 might add to our shock and it all came to over £18. When my wife returned after I went off the co-op I was shocked at the portion. Absolute joke. Eat it as I was hungry and it was rubbish. Apart from one crap chippy in Southern Ireland, this has got to be the worst of them all and I've been in some crap chippes. DO NOT WASTE YOU MONEY! Visited here on 'Good Friday' with my wife for which we hoped would be an enjoyable tea. My wife had been looking forward to having fish and chips all day, she is coeliac, and had heard that they cater for customers requiring a gluten free diet. When my wife ordered gluten free fish and chips she was simply told that they couldn't do it as their 'delivery' hadn't come in, but could have chips!Disappointed would be an understatement. We both left with nothing.Surely you wouldn't let stocks run to a low level like this in the first place before re-ordering, especially when you have the words 'Gluten Free' etched on your window? For anyone a bit confused by the name 'Ardchoille', it is now renamed McKays. We were informed by a local, however, that it is still under the same management.Needless to say we wouldn't return here again. We were very fortunate though to discover another nearby establishment that were more than happy to cater for my wife's needs, so the next time we now know where we will be going, and where we will not be going!

Wish I had paid more attention to the reviews before stopping here whilst travelling back to Glasgow yesterday. Ordered 2 rolls and chips and a bottle of coke which came to £7 odds :0 that in itself should have made me run a mile but I persevered long enough to be handed 2 brioche bun type rolls which weren't sliced open and 4 x butter sachets which I obviously had to put on the roll myself- no big deal but when I got back to the car the butter which he had put inside the box with the hot chips had melted into an oily mess so I couldn't use that. Even having put salt, vinegar and tomato sauce on my chips, they tasted of nothing... how can you get chips wrong?! I attempted a bite of the roll but sweet bread and salty chips are not a good combination so I didn't eat much of that at all. Would not recommend and won't go back. I've never known a chippy to use brioche buns for rolls and who don't even slice them open for you, you'd think charging you that price they could st least run a wee bit of butter over it for you. As ther were 4 of us, I asked my son to order some chips for us, only £1 each. It was a good amount of chips, I was rather full after that. Walked in and ordered a fish supper to sit in, waited about 5 minutes for a large, freshly cooked bit of fish and chips which looked and tasted lovely. The tall blonde boy serving was very chatty and friendly, which makes me believe it possibly depends on which members of staff you encounter. The only (small) criticism is the plastic cutlery, which was very flimsy, my suggestion would be to either buy better quality plastic, or simply some normal cutlery. Fast made to order fish and chips with seating inside and out. Fish was tasty although a little greasy for my liking. However, its fast food with a friendly service!!

we've used this chippie a few times but never reviewed it. it serves the best fish & chips in the town and everything is freshly cooked when you order something that doesn't happen in a few other establishments. overall very good quality but a wee bit expensive for a takeaway

We were looking for a proper 'chippy' but this place is far from it. Oven chips, fish with bones throughout, tasteless, small portions which was probably just as well as we couldn't even face what we had!

What an utter joke, a chip shop that serves oven chips, greasy full of rubbish sausage and fish that was full of bones. Avoid this place like the plague

One of the worst Fish & Chip Shops I've had the misfortune to enter.Popped in here with 5 friends ... bad mistake and one not to be repeated! It serves up oven chips not fresh fried homemade ones and the fish was so full of bones it would have defied a starving lion to get its teeth into it without fear of choking!

Got there during a trip in the Highlands. Hungry and hoping for some real fish and chips. Prices are high for the quality of the food and service. The fish included bones (that was also written on the wall as a warning) and was quite smelly. Chips -average at the most. The portions are quite large and might deal with your hunger - if you are able to finish the whole meal and not think too much of the taste. Therefore, I would definitely suggest trying something else in the town.

Stopped off at Pitlochry on the road up north, looked for a quick fix, so the chippy was agreed. We sat in and ordered two fish suppers. The staff seemed friendly enough can't say bad about the polish girl that served me. I paid £18.60 for the two suppers, a can of irn-bru and a 187ml bottle of blossom hill wine(£4.50). The woman does shout your order out for you to come get it but to be fair it's a chippy and not the ritz. Anyway biggest disappointment was the fact it was oven chips with the fish!!! That canny happen for that money. As always I feel sorry for the tourists who come to Scotland and get completely ripped off, why are these places so greedy,

Do wejścia zachęciła nas spora ilość gości - rodziny z dziećmi - jak my. Słabo to wyglądało. Ogólnie nie polecam.

Prices not in the real world, no opening times on door, £5.95 for chicken burger and chips tells you that real fish and chips here are a rip off . Fish and chips in the north of England average about £5 , get real up in Scotland and give some value.

We went here because it was quiet so ithought would be quick. Big mistake! I should have realised it was empty for a reason. The chips were average at best. The fish was a good size but most of it was batter, which was greasy and soggy. The fish was full of bones so we ended up not eating it. Not a pleasant experience

Ok I was one of 34 bikers who turned up unannounced and all in for our Friday night chippy. The staff were friendly enough but in there rush to serve us I think they let the quality go. In some cases the chips were undercooked and my fish had not had the batter fully cooked and then drained enough. That said the fish was nice tasting and meaty. But it was a bit of a free for all as to when you got your supper served. A simple numbering system would sort that out.The facilities look good enough and has some seating outside where most of us could sit.It was fine for us bikers, but as I can see from other comments / reviews it is not somewhere I would go with the family. I think they are more than capable of doing better and it is down to the detail. Guys my recommendation go see how some top scoring chippers do it. You will find it pays dividends longer term for a bit more focussed effort.

We stopped off after a funeral up north, we had been before a few years ago and it was great. What has happened! The staff were stand offish and ignorant! We sat down and they shouted over the counter for our order! We had a fish tea, single fish and two cheese burgers. Were to start, it was terrible the fish was soggy and full of grease, the burgers were the cheapest of the cheap, think they must have got a hundred for two quid! Also what happened to Chippy chips, these were frozen, I have had better from farm foods! We were shouted on again from over the counter to go and collect our meals! Terrible service. The best thing was the cup of tea I had. We all left all of our meals. DO NOT EAT AT THIS RESTAURANT! £29.14, for muck!

We called in here as a couple for the fish and chip tea. I agree with the other reviewers that the chips are frozen but the fish was fresh and well cooked. It is by no means a fancy restaurant but you are not paying £13.95 for fish and chips without bread and butter and a drink. The old saying applies You get what you pay for.

Wife and I stopped in for lunch and made a huge mistake going here: we ordered a hamburger and fish and chips. It was the worst meal of not only our entire trip but also of all of our trips to Europe and the UK over the years. The hamburger was dry and rubbery and came on a simple bread bun without anything else. My wife had a bite and threw it out. The fish and chips were greasy and rubbery---inedible! Clearly fried at too low of a temperature--had to throw it out too. The restaurant is very dirty. The staff were rude and arrogant and do not take pride in their food. If only I had read Trip Advisor before going there. The staff should learn how to fry and should learn how to make a real hamburger. This place should have closed a long time ago.

When we walked in we could immediately see that although the "restaurant" was busy, people were soon getting up and going! Leaving behind liquid on the floor and the tables, + wrappings, polystyrene containers and food strewn over seats and the floor. Grease, salt, sugar, ketchup and other elements of previous meals adorned both tables and seats, with not a staff member in sight seemingly interested in cleaning up this disgusting mess.I guess the other customers none of whom were smiling, had made the same mistake as us, through a lack of local knowledge we had all stumbled upon a chip shop nightmare!Service? Despicable. I think the man deliberately disarmed us by making patronising "jokes" about us and our order at our expense. When I asked what size the "large chips" would be, his muscle bound colleague produced a "large" Styrofoam container that looked reasonable enough. Then his equally intimidating colleague proceeded to place chips in it almost one at a time, until it was less than half full. I didn't dare ask if we could possible have just one more!!Five pounds my wife had given the man for two so called "large" chips, and all we got was a meager handful in two large containers. Even when I asked if I could add some vinegar, it was greeted with more "jokes" and reluctance. We felt conned and hungry so walked round to the Co-Op to get some sandwiches, before completing our journey back up North. It's not Pitlochry's fault, it was this particular chip shop and there are thankfully plenty of other places to buy food for our next stop on a journey by on the A9.Good luck!

Simply not worth it if you're looking for fish and chips. It is fast, but it's not a particularly pleasant place to have a meal, the fish and chips are very middle of the road, and the prices (cash only) do not reflect the 'fast food' approach. There are better options at the many nearby pubs/restaurants.

Just had a lovely fish tea in the chip shop attached to this guest house. The food was lovely - but was very disappointed with the hospitality from one member off staff - I asked if I could have a little bit of hot tea in my cup and I was told NO we do not do that - I would have had no objection to paying for it but I was not given this option. Another member off staff (a lovely girl) came over about five minutes later to offer me some tea - but for me it was too late - the girl also apologised for her colleague - I will not be back - lots of other places in Pitlochry to try.

Ate here on our first night in Pitlochry and it is what it is a fish and chip shop. Difference is there is inside and outside seating. The service is quick and we found the fish and chips good. They do offer other fast food options and also have alcohol. If you are expecting fine dining your need to go somewhere else, if you want a nice fish and chip meal this is your place.

This cannot by any stretch of the imagination be described as a fish and chip shop. They sell frozen, yes frozen chips that are deep fried in the frier. It is disgusting, horrible and wrong. If you run a chip shop how hard is it to peel and cut potatoes and then deep fry? I would have gone back and challenged the contents of my takeaway had I not been dumbstruck by the contents in the polystyrene container before throwing them in a nearby bin. Incidentally, the bin was already filled with discerning diners who already had the same idea.

I should have known when i went in, but I had already made my order, plates and plates of left over food that no one had eaten. These were frozen chips - not traditional British fish and chips. Even for frozen they were awful!! The man behind the counter told me they were not frozen - but 'chilled'? The reason they were 'chilled' is because they were defrosted frozen chips! While I was there a foreign family bought £37 worth of fish and chips . . . proceeding to put them all in the bucket outside the shop. I am ashamed that our lovely traditional Scottish food is being packaged and sold like this!

Dunno about the café but I do know about their ‘Farl’, Tower’s absolutely SUPERB soda-bread. So-superb that we’re prepared to drive 20+ miles to stock up on it - it freezes surprisingly well. Nor do we AT ALL understand the service-moans below. Over the last few months I’ve only been served by 2 people, both of whom are as helpful, quick, friendly - and nicely- jokey - as can be. What the moaners moan-about makes us wonder if maybe the problem is with the moaners rather than with Tower’s nice staff!

My partner and I came so we could have a last meal before it closed. We arrived at 12 because we reckoned it would be busy with it being the final day. We were told the kitchen didn't open until 12.30 so as we had found a seat, opted to have a drink. We ordered food at 12.30 (pie & chips and a burger) and over an hour later it eventually arrived. Also people that came in after us got served before us. No apologies for our long wait. It is maybe a good think that it has closed now.

Was charged 3times on my card for our meal after returning back to my table and asked to re present my card 5 times as transaction had not gone through! We were a table of 4 and when our food arrived I had ordered a PLAIN half roast chicken with chips and found that the chicken was infused with lemon and herbs and was curtly told that all the their chicken dishes were lemon infused. I am allergic and therefore couldn't eat it and was then told by the shift leader that I "couldn't read a menu properly" after more ranting from her I was eventually offered fish & chips which I accepted. Another at our table ordered a mixed grill which arrived with unidentifiable items on the plate. These items were so burnt and on complaining it was taken back to the kitchen and returned with 3 complimentary sausages on top and offer of a free cookie which was declined. On moving the sausages out of the way it was found that the rest of "the grill" had been even more incinerated and was now just carbon. We then asked a refund and did without this meal! The shift leader at this time was extremely rude and very condescending to me especially and I had to get up again to get the refund on to my card. By this time I had been up from our table 6 times and used 5 different card machines. In the past I have dined and had drinks there and had no problems and this review is highly edited but this visit was a nightmare!!!! I would tell everyone to run in opposite direction. The empty tables around us were by this time not bring cleared after 1hour and 30 mins. Disgraceful!!

Avoid at all costs, I asked for a carrot cake to be heated( I have done this numerous times before) first guy said we can’t (I think he was training- so no problem) other guy said yes let me take it for you. The coffee took 5 to 10 minutes so carrot cake was cold, I asked for a re-heat and was refused after spending £18 plus for 2 coffees and 2 cakes. He said the chef recommended it cold - I can’t eat cold cake as it’s too dry and I have no saliva due to cancer treatment - do I feel like explaining this, no. I was here to collect a winter coat, I treat myself to something every year, never will I frequent House of bruer again, extreme reaction ? - No. I said to coffee guy I’ll speak to manager he replied “good luck then sir” I’m fuming.

I would give two stars for the food and one star for table etiquette. We were unimpressed when we sat down to a table setting of basic low-quality, stamped-out flatware with sharp edges. Three of us ordered meat (duck, pork and beef), the other fish. No alternative, appropriate knives were brought to suit the food, nor was the cutlery replaced after the starter. There were splotches of dried food debris on the underside of all the placemats, which apparently never gets wiped off when they are stacked. The food itself was okay, but portions were on the small side and overpriced for what it was, e.g. two slices of duck breast, 1" slice of sea bass, very little vegetable to accompany. The chicken liver parfait starter was good but came with only three small slices of toasted baguette and bread was £6 extra. There was an abundance of wait staff operating on high-speed settings. We had trouble understanding what kept so many staff on the run (literally) given the restaurant was not full and could have been disruptive were it a romantic dinner for two. We just watched the show. Overall, a four-star restaurant should pay more attention to detail, quality and cleanliness, if it wants to have a four-star reputation.
