Best fish and chips I’ve had in UK!

Literally the best chippy in Padstow, forget getting "Ricked off" by the Stein, this place is proper old skool chippy. Mini fish and chips is £6, and so tasty. Decent food at a decent price, you literally paying for the name elsewhere.

Good fish and chips take away. Very popular, so a bit of a wait once you have ordered your food, but we'll worth it 👌

Bought 2 x fish & chips last night the worst I have ever had very greesy and tasted of dirty oil one to give a miss in future.

Service was poor, was only trying to ask if was open, and got, "what does he want", in a rude tone, orders my food for them to forget the fish, I rang to mention this, and they said o did we pop back down to get it, well what about rest of food, it'll be cold, not happy, put me off my tea how bad it was

Although a traditional chippy on part of the streets of Padstow went there for Fish and Chips and the food was lovely, well prepared, big portions and hit the spot! Many thanks guys!

Our go to chippy when we are in the area. Always fresh, hot, delicious. Perfect chips with just the right amount of batter on the fish. Who doesn't want Fish & Chips when at the seaside! You won't be disappointed.

Advertised opening times as 4-8.30 when we walked past at 4, went back to order at 6 and had closed shop and taped over opening times, several other customers also approaching shop

Food is delicious but waiting time is ridiculous. Luckily there's a bar next door for a pint to give you something to do while you wait.

I was horrified to see the sign in the photo. Whilst I can see it isn’t professional to regularly be on your phone at work, this blanket ban with the threat of instant dismissal is cruel and shows a complete lack of regard for you staff. If they tried to implement that in my work place there would be strikes. So unnecessary and mean spirited. I will not be giving money to people that treat their staff so badly. I would add that the staff were lovely. I feel very sorry for them

I attended just as they were opening at 1200hrs, two lovely ladies inside, one cooking and one serving, they were extremely helpful in making my choice of cod and chips, as I am in my late 70's and cannot eat a large meal they suggested I try a half portion which I did, it was absolutely the right size, the chips were scrumptious, not soggy as in some places and the cod in a lovely crispy batter was delicious, not to mention that the price was less than half of that in another well known local chippie. Thank you ladies for a lovely meal.

Nice fish and chips. Fish tasted fresh and was cooked ok. You can ask for large or small portions of chips.

After spending a week in Cornwall, me and my mother had fish and chips every night and agreed that this is the best place to come! The fish and chips are lovely, the system is well organised. Overall if you’re passing by, pop in for a cheeky fish and chips!

Tasty fish in a very thin breading, half of the portion could have been a little larger, because I had the impression that it was about 1/3 of a regular portion of fries. But it was enough for a small hunger, I would gladly buy it again

The fish looked nice and fresh but after a 50 minute wait the fish was overcooked and so where the chips, really slow service .not worth the wait

Delicious fish and chips, great value for money and great portions

After having some delicious fish and chips in Cornwall, this was a big disappointment. The fish was tasteless and overcooked with too much batter. The chips were ok. I have no idea why there is such a long wait as the food does not warrant this and this chippy would not survive outside of a tourist hotspot bubble.

Had today and was best fish and chips we’ve had in quite a while! Will definitely be returning … great value!

Had cod and chips today for lunch and it was delicious. Perfect chips and battered fish was fresh and crisp. Would recommend and thank you.

Great fish & chips .. Do a half portion too ( which we had ) ideal for smaller appetites. Fish was skinless and boneless and chips piping hot .. would definitely return . ( good prices too !!

Second night in Padstow, has to be fish & chips & this place was recommended. Although there was a queue outside, it was well organised with a ticket number given, we only had a 10 min wait. Both had hadock & chips & absolutely beautiful, tasty & fresh. Hubbie had a drink & sat outside the Brewery next door & the lady was happy for us to eat our fish & chips as long as we ordered drinks from her - fantastic 😁.

Just had a half fish and chips and although the fish was beautiful and freshly cooked the chips were absolutely awful. They had clearly been out for hours and were dried up and brown and really hard to swallow. The “home made” mushy peas were also really dry and a big disappointment. We’ve eaten here every time we’ve come to Padstow and the food is usually amazing so we’re bitterly disappointed New ownership perhaps? Must try harder if you’re to keep your loyal customers!!!

The worst takeaway chip shop for service I have ever been to.a it seems that every portion is cooked separately, 30 minutes is a ridiculous amount of time to wait for fish and chips.

Better than Rick Steins chippy round the corner for sure. Nice piece of cod. Light crispy batter. Lovely chips and mushy peas.

Popped here on mayday for a regular chips and a sausage for the pooch. First lot of chips were undercooked and didn't taste nice so took them back. After a short wait we were given some more which were worse, threw the entire lot in the bin as they wernt worth the calories. We went to padstow beer place instead where we had some nice nibbles and beer, a much better outcome! Won't be going back to this chip shop ever again.

I fortunately didn’t have to wait long but was quite disappointed when I opened the box. Chips close to dark brown (some burnt) and the fish is chewy to the point it’s overcooked. Not sure if it’s just today but have tried 6 years ago and didn’t have this problem.

Large chips doesnt exist in Cornwall,mushy peas arent mushy or are they southern mushy peas.😉 wont go during tourist season they just rush the food out,chips taste like theyve been sat in water for 24 hours. Prices are awful,get a full fish dinner at steins for £11 much nicer and the fish is fresh.

i have just ordered there and i got a haddock and chips and a battered creme egg i thought it was a tad weird but wanted to try so i got and and it was so good it tasted like a donut the haddock was really nice and staff are very friendly

What a lovely man who runs this shop, he opened the door and put a chair for me to sit inside until he was ready to open, then we had a wonderful conversation about our lives and his food was perfect, he even recommended going to tolcarne beach to eat our food and double wrapped it to keep it warm, would deffo recommend and see you again soon x

Amazing chip shop! Had the best fish and chips and battered sausage I’ve ever had! I really recommend visiting! The gentleman who served me was so kind and welcoming too, all round great experience! I’ll definitely visit again!

Been a regular over the last few years whilst on holiday. Always enjoyed our food bur yesterday evening we were sadly disappointed. The chips were dry and stale. It seemed they had either been sat there too long or had been reheated from lunchtime. They were dehydrated and shrivelled. We'll be back again in a few months and will give it another go, hopefully just an off night.

It’s probably now the best chippy around , fish is beautiful , chips on point and the lovely lady behind the counter makes for a great chippy , miles better than the big name in town , night and day compared to that tourist trap

The chips were over cooked, and the portion size was ridiculous. The large box of chips was no more than a third full, and could have easily fitted into the regular box.

Advertise themselves as being open until 9pm. Just went to the shop at 8.10pm to find they'd shut, even though they had the door open, and I was walking off heard one of them laugh "sucks to be that guy". Won't bother going back to see if the food is better than the attitude..

Absolutely terrible service and at best below average fish and chips. Price - very expensive considering the quality of the food, you get far better value from Steins. Food - Had far better pretty much everywhere else. The fish was average in size, lacked flavour and the batter was soggy and unenjoyable. The chips were okay, a good size portion but again lacking any flavour and very forgettable. Service - We went this evening for two fish and chips with mushy peas (sold out of mushy peas). In front of us was a large order so we had to wait a while which was not a problem. However once they’d finished serving the gentleman with his multiple boxes of fish and chips, the staff were very clearly inconvenienced and incredibly rude and grumpy with the rest of us left waiting. The miserable woman who served me barely made eye contact whilst grunting at me to collect my order. Couldn’t be bothered to salt and vinegar the food properly, so it all got poured straight onto the fish which was on top, making it incredibly salty, soggy and barely edible. She then threw my order at me without so much as a thank you whilst summoning her next victim for their measly serving also. Our first and last visit to this excuse for a chip shop, will not be back. Do yourself a favour and go anywhere else.

Really lovely fish and chips. Much better than Steins. Great service. Friendly atmosphere. Popular and busy. Well worth a visit.

Visited two days ago. Waited 3/4 hour. Definite discrimination against non regulars. Staff approach to customers ( not just me) bordered on rude. Chips were stale and over priced. A different story last time I visited a tear ago.

Awful food! Waited 20 minutes for overcooked fish (mainly batter), scampi and chicken burger! Chips weren’t much better either. As others mentioned lots of food cooked but nothing being served, need to get a system to serve customers when you order your food like other fish and chips shops instead of taking lots of orders at once then bellow at customers to wait outside until their food is ready! Would never return.

Ok if you like over cooked chips with minimal fish and loads of batter . Big let down

Waited 45 minutes for food. Three people behind the counter but only one of them was actually doing anything at any given time. There was plenty of cooked food waiting, it just wasn't being served. I came here instead of the big one on the harbour because I wanted to support a smaller business but I ended up wishing I hadn't. The other place has the same number of people behind the counter serving more customers but no queue.

Chips (especially) & Fish over cooked. Avoid.

We have been to Padstow for many years and have really enjoyed Chips Ahoy. Last year we were let down with the quality but decided to give it another go this year. Unfortunately we have again been thoroughly disappointed - quite hard to do with a group as hungry as we were! Both the cod and the chips were ridiculously over cooked and dry, making them extremely difficult to eat. Safe to say we won’t be returning to what used to be our favourite chip shop in Padstow :(

Really lovely food, homemade mushy peas are divine. Quick service and calm during a rush, staff are great! Had half a fish with chips, and it looked like a full portion, great value for money, and definitely recommend if you're staying in or near Padstow.

The best chippy in padstow, why go to Rick steins and be ripped off for the name when you can come here and enjoy the same food .

Best traditional fish & chips I have had.

Food was absolutely shocking. Waited 25 minutes for two cod and chips(they initially got my order wrong) when they did finally try and put it together, they attempted to give me one small and one large cod and chips(ordered two large) and then got funny because I reminded them of that and intentionally over salted my second set of food. Chips rock hard and tasted like they'd been sat in dirty oil. Overpriced and underwhelming.

Overall some of the better fish and chips I’ve had since coming to Cornwall. However, the fish and chips were overly salted and tasted quite greasy. It also took us quite a long time to receive our order upon ordering.

Well I am simply just let down by the service, quality, and even attention to detail in the food. I had ordered 1 portion of chips and 1 portion of cheesy chips. I was one of the first people to enter at opening time and surprisingly had to wait almost 20 minutes for just some chips! And when u received my chips in the end, I will be completely honest, they were not even that good. And the cheesy chips had surprised me, the cheese was not melted. And with both boxes, the provided forks would just go straight through the box and make your experience eating the chips a lot more difficult.

Went late on in the evening. The chips weren’t very fresh and the pastries on the pies were rather tough. I would have thought they would be fresher. The fish was ok. When ordering, the girl went through my order and it seemed fine when ordering verbally. Although, this was my error, I should have checked the order on the receipt..I paid, and thought how expensive, but as we’re on holiday, everything is expensive. Got back to the lodge and they had packed two additional chips, that totalled £7.00. Poor food and overcharged. Check your receipts.

A great place , we have been before, all the food was very good . Fish was cooked to perfection, chips were just the right colour & everyone enjoyed their meal. It was busy as expected but the staff were polite & very efficient. In my opinion a decent alternative to the more famous fish & chips served in Padstow . Highly recommended.

Pretty sure we were given yesterday’s chips, almost rock solid. The batter on the fish looked anaemic and soggy. But the fish tasted okay x

Chips tasted like they were a day old - hard and oddly chewy. Fish was ok. Granted it was very busy and the reviews are generally good here so may have just been an off day? We won’t be going back anytime soon.

Just wanted a portion of chips so we can't say about the fish but the chips were really disappointing Everybody moans about Rick Stein but his fish and chips the next evening were in a different class Sorry but we didn't actually finish the chips and threw some away

Luvly scrumptious food, gud 2 no U now open on Sundays.

We stopped here for some food just after visiting the town and a trip to the beach. We managed to get a seat under the canopy which was very lucky as it had just started raining. We had to wait a little while for our food order to be done, which I thought was a little odd as it was only a couple of battered sausages, and half fish and chips. Although the wait did not disappoint as the food tasted amazing. I would like to admit that the battered sausage is probably one of the best ones I’ve ever had. Chips were great too.

Fresh Haddock, chips and mushy peas were first class and reasonably priced. Sat and ate them by the harbour listening to buskers. Life doesn't get much better!

Come in number 36 The best in town You can also sit outside and have a beer while you wait. And for pudding, the local Pineapple Fritter (Coconut season had just finished ) 👌

Today my husband was researching where the best fish and chips are in Padstow. This store was very well rated, so let's go. Unfortunately we were seriously disappointed. The worst fish & chips I've ever eaten 😝🤮! The little bit of fish that was covered in way too much breading was totally dry and the chips wouldn't have received any awards either. The Heinz mayonnaise was the best part of the whole thing 🙄. I cannot recommend this store. 👎🏼

The mini fish and chips were nice but the service was terrible, we ordered two fish and chips and it took over 30 mins to arrive. The girl behind the counter didn’t even apologise for the delay was rude and needs to learn some customer service skills.

The BEST chips in Padstow. The same grockles who shell out money on driftwood will go to Stein's, but let them. Because you'll get a better Padstow welcome from a LOCAL chippy like this and you'll be smarter for doing so.

Great fish n chips made to order when we visited Padstow yesterday. Lovely owner John, his son Alex and member of staff who looked after us so well. Lots of laughs and came and found us to bring my curry sauce when I forgot to pick it up off the counter. So friendly and such tasty fish and chips along with a great service. Thank you. We visited here whilst in Padstow, after walking into to Padstow. We had Scampi and Chips. It was nice, but the only thing I would say is that £7.50 for scampi was a bit pricey for us as they weren't the biggest or the best. The food was good for lunch and did the trick. For me just a little to pricey, shame.

When you order fish and chips, you put your faith in the server to season your meal with salt and vinegar confidently; they should know the ideal ratios. What happened to the good old days of seasoning one side, then flipping it over and seasoning the other side? Has this technique been lost to the ages? Chip Ahoy let me down on multiple fronts; serving me dry, under-seasoned fish and, loveless chips.

Lovely Fish and Chips Highly recommend

The chips here are good and so is the batter. But, the fish was almost chewy in places. I would always rather have a smaller, better quality piece of fish which flakes when cut. However, this is a proper, old-school fish and chips joint. The staff are friendly and polite.
