Always been good in the past but this year absolutely awful , has the ownership changed? Will not be going again , Rick Stein's it is then

Chip Ahoy is a big part of our annual holiday to Padstow. We paid £27.70 for 2x fish, chips, mushy peas and tartar sauce. This fish has reduced in size, more batter than fish and was over cooked. A very disappointing experience. Can't believe it is up for sale for £895,000!!! Good luck finding a buyer.

We ordered fish and chips, and also scampi and chips - they were really good. However the staff let the place down especially the girl with tattoos serving at the counter, she never spoke to the customers, you got salt and vinegar whether you wanted them or not. When you tried to ask her something she blanked you and turned to her colleagues asking how many days it is to her holiday and made it very clear that it was beneath her to speak to holiday makers. I feel sorry for the owner of Ship Ahoy as she was not a good advert for his business.

Ordered 2x fish and chips and 2x sausage and chips. Were 4 fish and loads of sausages already in the counter. We were asked to wait outside. After they had served 6 orders which had been taken after ours I went up to the counter and was told they were waiting for the fish. When I said that there were four fish ready when we placed our order and they had been given to customers who had ordered after us I was told that they wouldn’t do that. I said but you have to which they replied oh no we’re waiting for sausages to which I pointed at the 20 plus in the counter and said no you’re not. They then said something about having to process small orders first! At this point I gave up and demanded a refund. Went round to Walkers and we were tucking in to lovely food in less than five minutes. Absolute shocking service

Nothing like it used to be! So disappointed in the cod! Chips nice but at £4 per portion would have expected a few more! Medium cod at over £7 - very small amount of fish! Used to be brilliant years ago so came back, will think again next time.

Good fish and chips (no problems with the chips like some other reviews) but portions are small. We ordered a large chips to share and it definitely wasn’t large. Long wait for food.

The choice in Padstow is this place, Walkers on the harbour front or Steins at the far end of the harbour. Unfortunately Chip Ahoy use pre chipped potatoes like Walkers do. The pre-cut chips are bought in items, not processed on the premises, and are coated with a chemical that stops the chips turning brown. The coating also makes the chips tough and very dry. Sad thing is, they don’t care. So the chips are awful for £4. The Cod was good, as was the batter, much better than Walkers. Note to Steins; don’t bother with Steins; mega expensive, small portion and chips no better than Chip Ahoy or Walkers. A bad thing about Chip Ahoy is their slow ordering system. Expect a 20 to 30 minute wait. They give you a number, but the system is what slows them down. They should process each customer as they come because it would be quicker. We had Cod and chips twice which should take about 3 mins to process, not 30. They had loads of fish already cooked, and yet they were so slow. Even if someone orders Cod and chips x8 they should just do it straight away. So, £23 for Cod and chips x2, better price than Walkers but the Chip Ahoy chips were awful just like Walkers. Frankly we’re sick of paying such high prices for basic takeaway food and have vowed to avoid both venues. Steins? Ha, no chance, he’s too bug for his boots and has no quality control either.

The cod was just about acceptable, but a lot of batter and a very small fish ( we ordered large.) Chips were dreadful! Hard, black in places, just awful. If you’re still tempted to visit then leave plenty of time. It’s a long wait. You order, receive a numbered receipt and then wait……and wait. I won’t be rushing back any time soon.

Think fish was sliced on a bacon slicer, all you could taste was greasy batter, chips were average but not great, couldn’t taste the fish as it was so thin. Real rip off, Rick Stein is a fraction more expensive but at least you can see the fish and it tastes really nice. An experience we won’t be repeating.

Went here today for fish and chips whilst visiting padstow and nearly fell out the door £11.90 for mini fish and chips that's 7.90 for mini fish £4 for a portion of chips and £16. for large fish and chips 😳 that's £32 for my partner and myself to eat out out polystyrene, wow no thanks I know its seasonal but that's just greed and as long as tourist are prepared to pay they are happy to take it 🤷‍♂️, I feel sorry for families with kids no wonder most can't afford a holiday.

Man cooking the fish was itching his face and hair Girl serving were rude and threw food at us. Quality of food was poor.. chips greasy and only a handful the fish was tasteless and the batter falling off it as it was as also greasy Madeleine

Superb....great cod, freshly cooked...really friendly staff ...lovely chips....popped into steins chippy and it was chaos....definitely choose this over steins.

I had the freshest and tastiest bit of well-cooked Haddock on Saturday night. The servers were super friendly and helpful and I know how hard they work all through the summer. Thank you Chips Ahoy.

We have visited Chip Ahoy on several occasions when visiting Padstow and have always been impressed with the quality. On the latest occasion we were happy with the lovely pieces of cod but very disappointed with the awful chips. Not sure if under new management as John wasn’t there when we visited last week.

By far the worst chips I’ve ever had visited this chip shop on 1st of November 2023 the shop was empty so a little bit confused as normally it’s really busy. But anyway I placed my order for regular chips only to find they charge me three pounds fifty for twenty chips.I’ve been coming to Padstow for about twenty years plus and always brought my fish and chips from here but while I waiting for my order I noticed that the girl who was working in there got a big bag of chips out of the freezer there is no excuse for frozen chips as potatoes are so cheap god knows where the fish comes from maybe a local supermarket total Rip off. Shop elsewhere maybe Rick steins little bit dearer but miles better.

A proper chippy in the centre of Padstow. (Not like Steins place where the posh people go to buy a tiny portion of fish and chips that requires a mortgage to pay). A large fish and chips with mushy peas on top doesn’t require a fancy name to be good. And they are good, they’re bloody lovely! Chip Ahoy - lovely friendly staff with Cornish accents. Perfect.

Excellent quality fish and chips , cooked to order , and quick service time. I ordered a smaller portion for my wife and three large portions for the rest of us. The girls serving were very pleasant and the whole atmosphere was friendly!

Absolutely terrible service and at best below average fish and chips. Price - very expensive considering the quality of the food, you get far better value from Steins. Food - Had far better pretty much everywhere else. The fish was average in size, lacked flavour and the batter was soggy and unenjoyable. The chips were okay, a good size portion but again lacking any flavour and very forgettable. Service - We went this evening for two fish and chips with mushy peas (sold out of mushy peas). In front of us was a large order so we had to wait a while which was not a problem. However once they’d finished serving the gentleman with his multiple boxes of fish and chips, the staff were very clearly inconvenienced and incredibly rude and grumpy with the rest of us left waiting. The miserable woman who served me barely made eye contact whilst grunting at me to collect my order. Couldn’t be bothered to salt and vinegar the food properly, so it all got poured straight onto the fish which was on top, making it incredibly salty, soggy and barely edible. She then threw my order at me without so much as a thank you whilst summoning her next victim for their measly serving also. Our first and last visit to this excuse for a chip shop, will not be back. Do yourself a favour and go anywhere else.

Opening times do not relate to those online . Drove there and despite being afternoon they were closed. Obviously don't need the business

Great quality fish and chips, not too far from the front / harbour and a fab little find. Food is cheaper than Rick's! Also a nice little outdoor table to eat at on the street.

Disappointed there was no haddock (they had sold out for a few days) so had to settle for cod. Make sure you do not visit anywhere close to closing time else you might be disappointed. We happened to be the last customer of the day on a Sunday after selling out of chips, they had to close an hour early. Very fresh fish and batter, authentic chips. Great experience.

We drove down for food here after a few friends had recommended it. Food was great, but shame about the incredibly rude lady on the till. Won’t come back purely for that reason.

We visited Padstow New Year’s Eve in the evening and had the most amazing proper tasty cod and chips. We couldn’t fault them. We sat by the harbour eating them and enjoyed every mouthful.. Thank you for making our New Year’s Eve special xx

Can’t applaud you enough, I really really enjoyed my fish and chips today and my 8 year old son said it was the best ever. I was really looking forward to a decent F&C meal today and you didn’t disappoint. Proper!

Took 30 minutes to get over cooked cod and Luke warm chips added an item to my order when collecting which was near cold after the 2 minute wal back to the cottage. Only eat here as everywhere else closed in Padstow very disappointing. On a plus staff were with friendly just a shame about the food

We’ve visited here for a number of years and this year did not disappoint. Great chips, crunchy on the outside and a large portion is loads for two adults. Recommend this as a great place to get chips in Padstow.

The girl at the counter was very rude and chatting with her friend whilst we were trying to order. After giving us our food she shut the door on us without even asking if we were happy with the food or needed anything else. The fish and chips were tasteless and had barely any salt and vinegar. Extremely slow service. Popped into town to pick up fish and chips for the family. Ordered and then waited 30 minutes for them to eventually box it up and serve it. It was Sunday evening, not especially busy. The staff took my order and then disappeared into the back, without any explanation of timing? When ordering fish and chips it’s usually boxed up relatively straight away, and served! Chips where awful. Wouldn’t recommend.

On an excellent day in Padstow, we had break at lunch time for fish and chips. About a ten minute wait but the food was freshly cooked and very tasty. We found a place on the harbour wall and really enjoyed our lunch.

We were desperate for our seaside fish and chip fix,so we went for the traditional takeaway and consume in the street. Unfortunately thus place was no better than aver,withdry haddock and grease batter. It was OK but nothing to get excited about and it always irritates me when they ration the salt and vinegar.

Ordered food that was sitting in warmer , the two girl had a nice chat and stood around whilst a number of people waiting for food then disappeared into the back for five minutes, why food cannot be served when you order it like most chip shops around the country, I have no idea felt like they enjoyed the power to make you wait , will go elsewhere in future.

Just spent a week I in Padstow and looked forward to fish and chips takeaway. Tried this restaurant a coup!e of times but was always disappointed. The service was extremely slow and the chips were overcooked and pricey. Not a patch on our local chippy. Would not recommend.

As a family of four we ordered four fish and two large chips and there were plenty leftover, portion sizes were very generous! The fish was excellent and the chips were hot but could have been cooked slightly longer. Gravy and curry sauce were both perfect. We waited about 20/30 mins which was to be expected given the size of the queue and the place’s popularity. I would have rated this as excellent had it not been for the rudeness of the staff. We had paid for our food then nipped back to our cottage (next door!) to check on our child who was ill (with grandparents). When my partner went back to collect our food that had already been paid for, he got greeted with a flippant comment about the fact that his number had already been called, by a staff member who was clearly aggravated at this. He explained he was seeing to his child and the response was along the lines of ‘maybe you should bring your child with you then’ as if to imply he’d left her home alone crying. Another staff member joined in to advise him he ‘wasn’t going to win this argument’ against the other staff member, who I can only presume therefore has a reputation for being argumentative. I was deeply disappointed at this unnecessary unpleasantness - especially as the food had been paid for so it wasn’t as if him being a couple of mins late would have been in any way detrimental to the business (even though it took longer than we were told anyway, which we were perfectly understanding of). Excellent food - but unfortunately customer service skills could do with some improvement. A little empathy at having a sick child wouldn’t have gone amiss.

We turned up after 2pm on a Monday not expecting a lot but we were hungry and fancied fish and chips. Have to say they were not the cheapest but certainly among the best we have ever had. Fresh fish, great chips, piping hot, friendly staff. Cannot fault this place, would return in a heart beat. Highly recommended.

Cod was really nice but the chips were not so good . Seemed popular . Located not far from the harbour so if you are lucky you can get a seat to sit and eat !

This place used to be our chippy of choice but the quality has gone down hill wafer thin cod the chips where shockin and the long wait i no its busy but come on look after your customers or they wont return.

This place does seem to get mixed reviews and I'm not sure why. Maybe it depends on which staff are on but we went twice a few days apart during our recent week in Cornwall and had really nice meals both times (this is a party of 7 and all meals - chips included - were equally good.) We had 4 teenagers and they would have really complained if the chips weren't up to scratch. Service not overly speedy but , as Padstow was rammed on both occasions, that is only to be expected. It was certainly not a long wait - on our second visit we had planned to try Rick Steins just to say we had been but the wait there was around 2 hours so didn't bother!

After waiting 1hour and 20 mins for our order, the chips were hard and inedible , the fish was good…. So disappointing when you experience such quality eateries in Padstow… . . I know it’s busy but they need to improve their processes and customer experience.

2nd night of our holidays. We googled the top rated fish and chip shops in the area. This one came out top. Fresh Haddock and cornish new potato chips. The BEST I've had. Just the right amount of chips, not soggy at all. Crisp batter. Flakey fish. smothered in salt and vinegar, but of tartare. Bloody gorgeous!!!We will definitely be back before we have to go home...

All the food seemed to be cooked, but the sales and wrapping took an eternity. The fish was good, but the chips were the worst I’ve ever had - hollow and dry - could not even get the fork in them.

Everything was cooked fresh to order with care. We placed our order and waited at the bar next door. They do not rush, but take their time to ensure quality. Good price too.

We grabbed fish and chips here as all the restaurants were fully booked in Padstow at the time. The fish was fresh and fried at the time as they had long lines in front of them. I must say, it was very delicios and the batter was not greasy at all. The price is also resaonable. Totally recommended!

A cold Monday night in August at 21:00 and some people have just left telling us they have waited TWO HOURS for four regular cod and chips, would of been nice to know a wait time. We had already been in the queue for 30mins. We gave up, no cod and chips worth a 2 hour wait. Don’t bother with the place if there is ANY queue, especially with tourist pricing.Not their fault it’s busy, Padstow is a tiny place with only a few takeaway fish and chip shops…just disappointingly slow service here!

The fish was OK, not dry and had crispy batter. For the price I've had better portions elsewhere, it was just enough though. The chips were so overcooked though they were more like Crisps, we couldn't even get our forks into them! And they to aaaaaaaaaages too.

With all restaurants fully booked in Padstow, Fish and Chips is one of the only options. Massive queue outside when we ordered. All cooked fresh and very impressed. Good size portions and tasted great. Would certainly recommend and use again.

I am very disappointed to read malicious reviews like the previous review that is an absolute lie.The food quality is amazing and the service is good, Yes you do have to wait a while but what do you expect in Padstow in July, there are queues everywhere.Please do not be put off by the previous review, Chip Ahoy is a fantastic chippy and well worth a visit.

DISGUSTING!! I've had some bad fish and chips in my time, but I've never had chips this bad.... Don't let the huge queue fool you, that's just down to the poor customer service. Do yourselves a favour and eat somewhere (anywhere!) else....

Visited based on previous reviews. Our group ordered cod and chips. Some of our friends prefer haddock but this wasn’t available, so they didn’t know what to expect. Well, the fish was fantastic. Crispy batter and lovely seasoned fish. It is easy for cod to end up a bit soggy inside the batter, but all the fish portions we had were perfect. One of the best cooked fish I’ve had. My friends all enjoyed the chips, but I prefer mine a little softer. The price was high though - £10 for cod and chips - but this reflects Cornwall’s generally high prices I think. I see that some recent reviews are a bit hit and miss which is a shame because we really enjoyed our food.

If you're the kind of person who has more time than the jobless then you may have enough free time to get an order in! Early retirees may also have a chance being served before their elogy. Do not expect any customer service whatsoever, nor any standards, pride or urgency regarding your order, the muffins looked like a dead fossilised insole and the chips may once have been near a potato.

We’d planned to have takeaway fish and chips before the semi-final as before the quarter-final (superstitious?) only to find Walkers on the harbour closing early due to the match!Joined the daunting queue of people here but the ordering system worked well and we had excellent fish and chips in time for the kick-off. The friendly staff were working very hard and cheerfully in the face of daunting demand.The only thing not as good as Walkers was the mushy peas, which appeared to be marrowfat peas, grey and rather tasteless. But the fish and chips were very good, as was the outcome of the football.

We visited this establishment having seen a significant queue outside and assuming this was a reflection of the quality of offering. Alas this was not the case.The horrific, crunchy, thick batter was dripping in oil, tasteless and masked a tasteless chewy piece of fish. Three fish and chips all thrown in the bin!This is not to mention the ladies behind the counter moaning about the tourists and how they “looked forward to when all these people have f#*led off”.Absolute hell hole to be avoided

We had planned to have pizzas from Embers but due to the increase of tourists in Padstow it would have been a three hour wait. As we were Hungary we went for the fish and chips at Chip Ahoy. The staff were all cheerful ,masked and efficient,which is not easy in these difficult times. The haddock was fresh with white and flaky fish. The chips were well cooked and the mushy peas were good. All in all a good meal at a reasonable price.
