China Chef in Canterbury

My review is for a takeaway. We have a Chinese from the China chef about once a month, sometimes there is a longer gap, especially after I’ve been disappointed by what we received. It’s a shame because it’s only the little things that let this place down, last night it was the chips they were all brown, not normal chip coloured. They seem to have been re-cooked, The noodles and ribs that my husband gets from here all the time are excellent, but I am a curry person and I have given up on the chicken curry because it’s basically chicken in a curry flavoured water. The sauce is not thick enough. Oddly enough, if you buy a pot of curry sauce, it is thick and really nice, it’s just sad they can’t do the same thing for a curry. So it looks like they’ll be a gap before we buy another one from here. Such a shame, because their delivery is always on time and their delivery people are excellent.

They couldn't deliver, so we had to get a taxi to pick up. Got home to find my veggie curry was meat and my veggie spring rolls had meat and prawns in them. Called them up and all they could offer was a replacement if we picked it up. Obviously we wanted to eat the rest of our meal and it would have all been cold by the time we got back with the replacement. They couldn't offer a refund or credit, nor drop off the reacement. Really poor service and a pretty bad mistake to make to give a veggie meat, and prawns in the spring rolls - what if I had been allergic and eaten one!

I love Chinese food, and I think this is the best.

Just had a king prawn curry and egg fried rice and i have to say its one of the best i have ever had, there were loads of prawns, onions were nice and crispy nice spicy sauce packed with flavour and the fried rice was very tasty. Five stars from me.

What a find! Best Chinese food by far in these parts where good Asian food is thin on the ground. My tastes run more to SE Asian spices & cuisines as I lived there for several years, but decided to stop in here yesterday evening on a whim & after hearing many positive word-of-mouth reviews. Clean premises (for the time being no in-restaurant dining), welcoming & accommodating staff & delicious fresh cooked food that isn't greasy city or seemingly packing an MSG wallop. My tofu & mushrooms was exceptionally good, and I could have eaten the Egg Fu Yung mushroom filling all night long. Try it for yourself.

Take away for 6, including vegetarians. The lady was really helpful with the menu and made a dish we wanted vegetarian for us. Food was tasty and reasonably priced.

First time been to China chef in Whitstable , Kent . I was quite impressed with my takeaway , it was fresh and tasty. Will come back when in the area.

Simple well cooked food. Is the special fried rice good is my first test of any chinese takeaway. Yes this is excellent. Same with the other dishes. Since Yangsee closed this is now our place of choicein the whistable area

They messed my order up and I called them to let them know and they called me a Lier, saying I didn’t like the food and wanted my money back after trying. Don’t really know what else to say.

Lovely people simple, well cooked, yummy food! If you fancy a Chinese I heartily recommend.

Love the mixed platter for 2. So tasty and lots of flavour. Very good portion. Salted chilli and garlic prawns are the best I've had. Love the food. The only thing I think could be better and more crispy is the crispy chilli beef. Went a bit soggy. Over all highly recommended this place. Very fast delivery and friendly staff. So far so good as its so hard to find a good Chinese.

We order Chinese every week and today the chicken satay was the worst we have ever had, the sauce didn’t taste of peanut and was gluepy and thick like a gravy. Called and told manager and she checked with the kitchen. We asked to speak to the owner and they refused, we asked for a refund and they refused and asked them to collect the satay to see for there selves and they refused. It was a poor response and we’ve been excellent customers for a long time.

We are not locals, but this is where we go for a lovely Chinese meal. Take away service but the staff are fab

On holiday and wanting a Chinese takeaway we chose this one for its good reviews. We were not disappointed. It was lovely. My wife is a chicken black bean lover and said it was the best she had had.

Been using this restaurant for a few years probably the best one locally we have now moved away and are trying to find one as good if not it will be a 35mile round trip

Tried to order online, their website sends you to spurious phishing sites. So tried telephone, I asked if I could pay by card to be told take away is cash only. So my first time of using China Chef, was my last.

Really enjoyed the food, we will definitely be eating here again. Fair prices, not greasy, tasty and didn't take long.

Just had an amazing takeaway from here today, arrived on time, hot and very tasty. Very well priced compared to other Chinese restaurants in the area.

As a relative newcomer to Whitstable I decided to order a takeaway from China Chef. Only two courses: Kung Po Prawns and Singapore Rice Noodles. The Kung Po Prawns were very good. Very plump prawns and a tasty sauce. The Singapore Rice Noodles were a big disappointment: very dry and colourless. They didn’t seem to be freshly cooked even though it was only 5PM. Next time I will try a different restaurant.

Best Chinese in and around Whitstable. Worth the wait. I wrote this review a while ago now. Have to add that the last time we ordered 27th May, was not good, everything was greasy. Salt and chilli ribs were horrid, couldn't eat any or it. Very disappointed, hope this was a one off as has always been our favourite, but won't order from here for a while now.

AVOID THIS PLACE!! Unless you like luke warm food, a TWO HOUR WAIT, and a manager that thinks it is ok to order your dinner at 6pm and have to phone to chase and still wait two hours for it to arrive. Don't bother!! Only gave one star as zero not an option.

Truly excellent food and probably the best Chinese Takeaway vegetarian options in Whitstable/Tankerton. Food is packaged in the 'old style' foil trays and cardboard lids, so fully recyclable (unlike all the other Chinese takeaways that I've tried in the area which use plastic tubs). Cannot recommend highly enough.

Very disappointed with the food. Beef chow mein, not good at all. Pork dumplings swimming in fat and soggy. I won't use it again .. because I couldn't eat it !!!! But the staff were lovely.

This was maybe the best i have tasted in a long time. Normally I order elsewhere. But this is where I'll get my food from now. Everything was fresh, tasty and a good price.

Worse Chinese takeaway ive ever had, crispy fried beef was soggy, salt annd pepper ribs, nothing but fat! Wont be getting another takeaway from here thats for sure.

Had a take away from here for the first time this week.Was supposed to be 20 mins arrived in 15 mins. Food was very tasty and hot. My wife is veggie so plenty of choice to keep her happy. Will defiantly use again probably eat in next time Great. Well done

Having grown up in Tankerton, this has always been my favourite Chinese restaurant. It is very different to high-end London chinese restaurants but the food quality is always good and it offers all of your typical Chinese takeaway dishes. The service is great and I prefer eating in to the takeaway option. Jackie is so sweet and lovely! Decor a little basic and never a lot of people eating in mid week (SO many takeaways though!) but I come back here with my parents time after time.

It was the first time we had ordered a takeaway from this restaurant and had decided to try it due to the good reviews on trip advisor. Due to the lockdown they had a table near the door so that you didn’t have to actually enter the shop a very friendly lady brought the food out when it was ready while still maintaining a safe distance, the shop itself appeared to be spotlessly clean even the outside window ledges were dust free always a good sign in a food premises. The food itself was delicious it was still piping hot by the time we home, the rice was lovely and white not this grey looking stuff you get in some places, the batter was crispy and not stodgy as is often the case and the ribs were tender, what I also liked was the fact that you were automatically given prawn crackers and not expected to purchase them like you are in the majority of takeaways. I will certainly be going again and will definitely recommend them to my friends.

Definitely the best Restaurant / Takeaway in the Whitstable and Herne Bay Area I’ve tried them all in the 40 years I’ve lived here

Been to Whitstable quite a few times and never managed to get here. I was the only person in the restaurant early but phone buzzing with take away orders. I just had tofu in spicy sauce with egg fried rice- both very good and clean- no grease- tofu pieces had a lovely crunch to them. Service was very polite and warm from the two ladies- all in all a very good restaurant.

Been enjoying China Chef eat in and take outs for nearly 20 years. Best chinese around. Lovely staff. Don't let the slightly shabby premises put you off. Good value and great taste.

Had a family birthday with 14 of us, service was quick, especially as they were super busy with take away orders. Food was excellent and the staff friendly, even giving the birthday girl & boy a bottle of prosecco each which was a lovely gesture. We had a set menu and there was lots of it and very reasonable on cost. Have loved this Chinese for years, never had a bad meal here.

Always had delivery. For a change and a treat fo my brother decided to eat in. Its was drab inside 1 table laid up because I booked. Pleasant lady took our drinks order, we decided to order a couple of starters at a time, eat them and order some more. We had- seaweed, beef pancake rolls, chicken sate, seafood platter. Then crispy chilli beef (this came old school in a fried potato matchstick bowl) mushroom chow mein, fillet of beef Cantonese style, Special fried rice and pork dumplings. No desert as we were full. Every thing cooked perfectly.The dishes were 10 times better than the takeaway food. I add the old saying "don't judge a book by its cover" While eating there, they were continually serving takeaways and deliveries non stop.Will definitely be back.

Only ever use this place when in Tankerton amazing food always and staff are just lovely especially love the salt and chilli squid! Prawn balls chicken ball curry in fact there is nothing I don’t like!!

Have been customers for years but repeatedly they do not answer their phone. One minute it rings and rings and the next It’s engaged. Shame because the food is lovely when you can order it. Perhaps they need more staff and phone lines. Got fed up and went elsewhere in the end

I would love to review this establishment but EVERY TIME I try to go to it , even though they say their open ,it's CLOSED! Surely if you say that your opening hours are until 10pm then why do you close earlier?? Extremely unprofessional!

We finally ordered from China Chef after trying the other Chinese restaurants in Tankerton and Whitstable (I usually make my Chinese food at home). The food was nicely prepared -- lots of flavour in the chicken w/ ginger and spring onion. The pork dumplings were delicious, with a nice traditional touch to the dipping sauce -- soy sauce, rice vinegar and shredded ginger (something that is not common to find in the UK, though it is traditional). The beef and tomato was flavourful, and for deep fried fare, the chicken balls were very satisfying.A nice touch -- I'm American-Chinese. I ordered take-away and was asked by the hostess if I wanted rice. When I replied "I have that home", she smiled. I was the first customer that night, and when my order was taken to the kitchen, I saw an eldlery Chinese man get up from his stool to start cooking -- reminded me of being a kid in Los Angeles!

We have been looking for a new Take Away as the one we use we used in Herne Bay has changed hands and is not longer very nice. We have tried numerous local takeways and on the recommendation of a friend came here. The staff were very friendly and the food was great, The chinese was light and not overcooked and we will defiantely be back. We haven't woken up thirsty so possible no MSG. I cannot give this 5 stars as I was not impressed with my favourite dish which is singapore noodles. This was spiced with pepper and not to my liking. Even though this isn't local we both agreed it is worth the trip to Tankerton as it knocks spots off of all the Chinese places in Herne Bay

We’ve always ordered from china chef but today’s experience put us off for a while. We’ve ordered a fair bit as we had family around. The kids love sweet and sour prawn balls so we ordered some but got accidentally delivered chicken balls instead which we only found out after biting into one. We immediately called them back and the lady repeated the order back and acknowledged that we indeed ordered prawn balls. She said she’ll have to charge us £1(which costed us in the end more than prawn balls cost) and she’ll need the rest of the chicken balls backs. We’ve packed the half eaten one too hope they enjoy it! The food is delicious but this was definitely an odd experience

Visited the China Chef for the first time on Bank Holiday Monday as we read the reviews and they were one Chinese takeaway or restaurant that was actually open whilst many others were closed on that day. Have to say that the food was really good, very tasty, hot and spicy. All presented real nice too. I had chicken curry, special fried rice, hot and sour soup and sesame prawn toast. My wife really enjoyed her dishes too. The welcome of the 2 ladies was very friendly as we arrived also. So, compliments to the chef and the staff who were engaging ! Thanks, we will be back for more now !

China Chef is a great restaurant/take away. We've collected in person and had food delivered. It has always been hot, well-prepared and high quality. I'd recommend it to anyone.

Good reasonable two course lunch. spring roll followed by beef curry all served quickly and professionally. Good singapore noodles too and have had their ribs have been reccomended but no chance to try yet

Absolutely delicious, hot food from this fast and efficient Chinese takeaway. I opted for home delivery (1.3km away) and the food was with me in less than 20 minutes (they quoted 30-40), delivered by a friendly and cheerful lady. We bought 3 different dishes and all were cooked to perfection and were exceptionally tasty and very authentic (for my western tastes). Not too much salt and no gloopy’ness.

Friendly family run business. Food always delicious, great vegetarian options too. Takeaways always delivered well within given time and piping hot. Restaurant small and intimate, excellent service all round!

Had a meal from here at the weekend and both me and my partner have had diarrhoea and vomiting. The food was ok, not the best but has definitely upset us since eating it. Wouldn’t eat from here again.

Had a delivery £50 & what a waste of money. Food was barely warm & had no taste to it very bland. Think this restaurant has gone down it was one of the best around. Won’t be ordering again & wouldn’t recommend

We went here as we had read many great reviews but was terribly disappointed we spent over £60 on a family meal and most of our dishes were not edible and tasted exactly the same as the next very strange very bland and tasteless deffo would not be returning and if we was sat in for a meal I would of returned every dish and not paid what a shame

Whenever we order a Chinese takeaway we use China Chef as it's fresh and tasty. We have tried many of the others and found them to be of a much lower standard. Shame they aren't open Mondays.

Se toman los pedidos (si tienes suerte! ) para 15 minutos después de que abre y después rara vez respuesta su teléfono. Entregarte, si puedes conseguir tu pedido, pero sólo los fines de semana. Si pides durante la semana tienes que recoger. Es una lástima, ya que gambas tostadas de sésamo fantástica, guisos y otros platos. Sólo sirven fideos vermicelli estilo así que finas les decepciona un poco. Venga en chef de China. Entrar en el mundo moderno y responder su teléfono o unirse a casa con hambre!

The China Chef is, without doubt, the best Chinese in Whitstable. The food is amazing. Staff are friendly and the delivery service is efficient.

Seven of us visited the China Chef on a Saturday night. We started with mixed platter, followed by crispy duck and then a selection of main dishes, noodles and rice.The food was excellent and all plates were left empty. A couple of bottles of house red were drunk and a few bottles of beer. Excellent value for money under £30 per head including the drink. Would certainly recommend a visit.

I've been using the China Chef for over 15 years now and I've never had a meal from there which was not up to standard. They are reasonably priced but the food is A1. If you want to eat in then book well in advance as the Restuarant only has around 12 or so covers.

Very nice food indeed and huge choice on the menu, quote a budget looking venue but the lovely service and food makes it a great local secret.

We were staying close by and searched for Chinese take away options. This came out top but I'm baffled why unless they were having a bad night. The dumplings were soggy and burnt on one side. The sweet and sour chicken was a bag of chicken balls and a separate pot of just sauce, no onion or peppers or anything in. All the food just seemed to have half the flavour.

Lovely food. Fab starters. Friendly service. I highly recommend a visit. Try the salted ribs or the paper wrapped prawns which are delicious.
