Chiltern Hundreds in Maidstone

We visited the area to catch up with family and were told about this place. We had popped in some while back and had been underwhelmed. What a difference now! The food was so good that we decided to eat there several times during our visit and experienced several different dishes including the gorgeous Sunday roast. The staff were pleasant and friendly. A blond lady greeted us and was very informative when she told us about specials etc. She was there each time we visited and she was equally good each time (Gemma). She was just as professional and accommodating with all diners. There was a tall chap who made a point of checking (as did Gemma) that our meals were good and that all our needs were being met. He always seemed to be busy but was pleasant and welcoming. The dishes that we experienced and enjoyed were the apple pie (amazing and gluten free), fish/chips (with the addition of scampi), rump steak (perfectly cooked), duo of chicken (gorgeous and I had this twice as it was so good). The outside needs a lick of paint and might put off diners but we'd advise people to look past this. You DO need book for Sunday lunch as it was packed out when we were there. Weekdays can also be busy but if you are willing to purchase food at the bar they may just be able to squeeze you in - ask like we did. If we're in the vicinity again we'll certainly be calling to get a booking.

Great reception from the lady who greeted us (Gemma) and was most helpful in advising on the days specials etc. We enjoyed a good meal which was served promptly and was piping hot. We observed the manager being active in greeting customers and checking all was in order. A busy venue but one which made us feel special. We were in the area so made this our regular eating spot during or stay in the locale. We would readily recommend this place for a relaxing eating experience. Booking is highly recommended as it seems very popular with locals.

Went for a Birthday lunch, we have often eaten at the Chiltern Hundreds and food has usually been pretty good. Firstly the pub was extremely cold, so it wasn't welcoming. 2 of our party of 3 were vegetarian and we were told by the waitress that quite a few of the veggie options were not available. we ordered 2 of the garden vegetable burgers and a seabass. When the food arrived the fries (were supposed to be skin on fries) but looked like microwaved fries, were warm/cold and tasteless. The burgers were warm and colder in the centre. The seabass was ok but again was warm not hot. I left most of my burger and fries as I was concerned that it wasn't cooked properly. When we expressed our concerns the manager told the waitress to tell us that no-one else had complained. We were offered complimentary desserts which we declined. My husband said we would not be coming back here again. When my Father-in-Law paid the bill they did not charge us for the burgers, which we are thankful for. So disappointed, there are obviously some problems going on, let's hope you resolve them soon.

Haven’t been there for at least 20 years - and it will be more than 20 years before we go again. Firstly, the young waitress was very good and very apologetic. My wife had the steak pie. It was warm on the outside but cold - as in fridge cold - on the inside. The mash had a crust that any pie would have been proud of. Sent back and my wife was so put off that she didn’t want to risk a replacement. I had the chicken burger and it was dreadful. If I say that the best bit was the bun…..I don’t know when that piece of shoe leather was first grilled but it wasn’t just after we ordered. There are so many pubs serving good food in a warm room but we don’t need to think about going back there again. I see there are good reviews; great - but I wouldn’t want to take the chance on what sort of chef day you are going to find

We went here today for lunch and was served by jemma. The food was absolutely lovely,i understand they had a new chef and i gotta say he was spot on. The food he produced was fautless. We are here at christmas for dinner and looking forward to it already if our lunch is anything to go by. So if your down maidstone way and are feeling peckish then i would highly recommend that you pop in and see jemma who was a superb friendly waitress.highly recommended

Do they do gluten free/coeliac safe roasts?yes. Is it good? Absolutely not. Probably the most disgusting plate of food I've ever tasted with or without an allergy, and I paid for the pleasure. First the positives, they had gluten free yorkshire puddings and they had gluten free sausages (not the pigs in blankets advertised on the many but some shrivelled possibly microwaved thing). The turkey roast was not the same turkey as the one my gluten eating companion had - mine appeared to be cooked/microwaved from frozen and was watery, unseasoned and frankly gross. The gravy was lumpy. The veg were fine, the potatoes were probably from a packet. I can't imagine anything is cooked fresh. The service was terrible, slow and forgetful. We ended up eating before they brought us the mini puddings to go with our coffees. Very disappointed. I might have an allergy but I still like good food.

Food was very average, boiled potatoes microwaved to death, ciabatta roll warm on top cold at the bottom slim fillings, then we spotted a field mouse wondering about in the bar area wonder where else it had been?

A great evening and we were looked after very well by the lovely Gemma. A relaxed atmosphere and good to see our local nice and busy.

Starter and main course both well-presented, tasty and good portion size and plenty of options. Made to feel welcome by Gemma on arrival - she seated us and explained the menu thoroughly. On a rainy, dreary day the decor and atmosphere was welcoming, clean and comfortable and the service was excellent and friendly. Would recommend booking online as it’s obviously popular.

Our waitress is what made our visit good. Shirley was welcoming, friendly and very friendly. I was with a friend who has a baby and Shirley asked if we needed a high chair, any hot water for his bottle etc. Simple things like this are so rarely found or thought about and we truly appreciated it. The food was good but Shirley’s presence was better!

Met up with girlfriends for a much waited catch up over a meal … well disappointed is mild … 2 out of 3 meals not even “ok” one meal a leek, cheese & asparagus pie absolutely charred black and quite obviously burnt ,my friend pointed it out to the waiter who “apologised “ and said he’d relay it to the kitchen but really wasn’t that interested and she didn’t want to “delay” the meal we’d already waited for anyway ..2nd meal…the belly pork looked more like a rasher of under done bacon and a dried wedge of cabbage , then to top it all when we had “eaten” the waiter came and “apologised “ stating they needed the table as they’d become “busy” !!!on booking our table not knowing nice was it mentioned there was a limited time for us to eat … needless to say like the staff & we presume it was the manager giving instructions to the waiter they weren’t that interested or bothered ..they got their money it though I truly believe the burnt pie meal should never have been paid for but we did .. we certainly will vote with our feet and not go there again and would NOT recommend this eatery… you’ve been warn .

Booked for 5 adults on Easter Monday at 1 pm. Generally our meals were very good however two of the main meals were cold when they arrived. We mentioned this to our waitress Shirley who offered us replacements however we decided not to take them as we had eaten half our meals. We were then offered two free desserts which we accepted. Aside from this I would like to make a special mention to our waitress Shirley as she was very efficient and polite from the moment we arrived to when we left and nothing was too much trouble for her. We would return as we generally had a very nice time and the rest of the food was very good.

We came out for a family birthday dinner and had a lovely evening. Kevin took our orders and went over and above to look after us during our visit with a very helpful and kind manner. We all really enjoyed our meals from their new menu. A lovely evening had by us all.

Went tonight for a meal at the Chiltern Hundreds. Elle our server was brilliant, with nothing being too much trouble and doing it all with a smile. The food was fabulous and we highly recommend the new lamb shank shepherds pie and the glazed belly pork. Will be back again soon.

We had a nice family lunch with our 2 golden retrievers. Only a few of the tables are dog-friendly so be sure to mention this when booking. Shirley looked after us very well, and the food was good. I especially enjoyed my Duo of Korean Chicken.
