Best place to eat in hitchin. Great family run business! Couldn’t recommend more highly! The food and the staff are 10/10

I have thought long and hard before writing this review but I can’t put this experience behind me. Some background - last year my elderly mother was diagnosed with cancer. During her gruelling treatment, though which I looked after her, she mentioned this wonderful cafe in Hitchin that did an amazing breakfast. I promised when she got better I would take her. Skip forward a year and thankfully that time has come and we visited together yesterday. After waiting a short while for a table we were shown to our seats by a young waitress who took our drinks order as we were seated. I noted a large table behind us with one person sat at it apparently waiting for her party to arrive. We had waited quite a while for our drinks during which time the large party had arrived, ordered their drinks and been served them. The waitress checked with us whether we had ordered and we said yes and gave our drinks order again, and the drinks were brought quite quickly. I don’t have an issue with this - it was busy and the waiting staff are very young and were very polite. When our drinks were brought we ordered our breakfasts. Again the large table behind us ordered after us but were presented with their food before us. Again a member of the waiting staff asked what we had ordered - seemingly the order had been misplaced again - and the breakfasts were brought shortly afterwards. The plates were cleared quickly and we finished up our drinks and were just about the gather up our things and leave when a member of staff from the front of house (manager/supervisor?) came up to the table and very aggressively asked us to leave as he needed the table back. We were both really shocked by his manner and I replied that we had literally just finished our drinks and were preparing to leave, at which point he put his hand down on the table really aggressively in front of me and leant over to me and all but had a go at me saying ‘let me explain to you we are a family run business and I have a queue of people waiting and can’t have people lingering at tables’ and marched off. I was astounded. We had ordered, eaten and drank - and were about to leave - in a very timely manner, and the large table I mentioned were still seated as were many others who had been there when we arrived. Why had we been singled out and why were we spoken to like that? We went to the till to pay and were presented with a bill for £5.50. I prompted that the bill didn’t include the breakfast at which point the staff member said ‘oh, did you eat? What was it?’ I told him and asked if that had been why he had spoken to us like that, as he’d thought we’d taken the table for that long with only two drinks. He replied ‘well I’m here and I don’t see what goes on back there’. I could not believe he offered no apology nor explanation for why he had spoken to us in that manner. The staff had lost our order twice - three times if you count at the till as well - and we had been nothing but polite and also courteous and mindful of the cafe’s need for the table back. I don’t expect anything from this - judging by the lack of apology at the time I doubt one would be forthcoming, and it’s too late anyway. I am just writing in the hope that the staff member who treated us like that sees this and gives some consideration to how they speak to customers in the future. What was supposed to be a quiet celebration was ruined by this person’s actions and instead of making a nice memory after the not very nice memories of the last year, we both left feeling really upset.

I had tried a Sandwich before and had sent my daughter to get me one. I had reheated it in the air fryer and I promise you, I cried when I nuked it!!! I was that upset. I had to send my daughter back last week and she came raving how friendly the place is and having worked in a Cafe herself, she was well impressed and only reason she does not mind the 25 mins drive to get there. We don't do it that often but you can not go wrong. Lovely sandwiches and I have tried the sit in and enjoyed that too.

I came in here for a coffee and Pastal De Nata. Really lovely place, warm, welcoming and friendly. Nice ambience. Ignore any negative reviews as this place is lovely and 100% recommend. Chose to have my coffee here rather than one of the bigger chains to support local businesses.

Just a wonderful Friday lunch for every reason. Warmly greeted with menus and ushered to table, given time to consider before staff returned to take order. Drinks arrived promptly followed by food which was just delicious. Freshly prepared, full of flavour and reasonably priced. Will definitely return and very happy to recommend.

Don't normally write reviews but want to chime in I suppose with some of those negative reviews below! Having just moved to Hitchin, we are a few minutes walk away and have always had a lovely experience in Chilli B's. Absolutely lovely coffee, cakes and sandwiches. My partner works from home and she has gone there a couple times, loving it so much we took her parents and her grandma! Staff have also always been nothing short of lovely. Thank you :)

A shame! I’d heard great things about their food. Despite everything tasting ok, it felt very hostile, we were not warmly greeted and made to feel like our decision on food was rushed. In the queue, we we’re offered to take a menu “so we can decide in advance” before returning. I’m not sure if this was a new staff member, but quite frankly small businesses rely on local customers and I’m not sure I’d return. Improvements in customer service needed!

I went to Chilli B cafe in Hitchin the other day on Friday 4th August 2023 for lunch as I often do when I'm in Hitchin shopping, I'm a very regular customer and have been coming here for years either on my own or with my mum for lunch or coffee and it's always been my go to coffee shop in Hitchin as upto now, until the other day I've always found the food and coffee very good and the staff very friendly and helpful but when I came in on Friday for lunch I was very disappointed because my sandwich wasn't very appetising at all as the bread was dry and stale, the smoked salmon was chewy and there was way too much salad cream in my sandwich and even though I'd specifically asked for no rocket in my sandwich when I ordered they put rocket in my sandwich anyway instead of normal lettuce. When I complained to a member of staff about my sandwich they took the rocket out of my sandwich and told me the reason that they'd given me rocket in my sandwich was because they'd run out of normal lettuce leaves which to me isn't really good enough and very unprofessional I think. After they'd taken the rocket out of my sandwich they gave me back the same old sandwich with the same stale brown bread and chewy smoked salmon so I then asked a member of staff if they could change the bread for me and they told me that the bread was all the same so I then asked if they had any baguettes instead so they said yes and gave me a baguette which was a bit fresher but still with the same old chewy smoked salmon in it, I was so fed up by then that I ate it anyway as I was so hungry but I didn't really enjoy it and it all felt like such an uphill struggle in order to get my sandwich how I wanted it. At the end when it came to paying for my lunch one of the staff asked if everything was OK and I said it wasn't upto it's usual standard. I wouldn't say they were that apologetic and despite my sandwich not being very good and considering I've been a very regular and loyal customer for many years now and go there for lunch nearly every time I'm in Hitchin,they still charged me the full price for my lunch and didn't even offer to give me any discount or a free coffee or anything like that to say sorry for the poor quality of food. I almost felt like the staff didn't really care and I'd have thought especially in these times with a cost of living crisis that a small independent cafe like this wouldn't be able to afford to be so complaiceant with food standards and customer service. After this experience on Friday I am a bit put off about going to this cafe again, on my own or with family or friends which is quite sad as this has been my favourite cafe for many years in my area and until the other day I always thought that Chilli B was the best cafe in Hitchin and I very rarely went anywhere else for lunch or coffee but now I feel different after my experience on Friday and I think it's probably unlikely I'll be going there again anytime soon.

Have had coffee before but not lunch . Today we sat in charming garden which was lovely and peaceful even though most tables taken . Very much enjoyed Pacific Delight and Ben Herd absolutely delicious. Service was faultless. When in Hitchin will visit again.

First visit to this outlet and delighted to have found it. Sitting area was full so opted for the bar/stool area in the other side. Mr & Mrs Owner could not have been more welcoming and friendly - passionate about what they do and the service they offer. Lovely, freshly prepared breakfasts with quite delicious coffee. Will definitely return and would certainly recommend.

What a great little find. Stumbled across this place. Very pleasant service and a beautiful concealed ‘beer’ garden. Our sandwiches were excellent.

Varied menu offering a lot of choice, excellent service and we had an great lunch. Great facilities including an outdoor seating area in summer.

Excellent service as always. I noted someone complain about negative comments to Eastern Europeans. I have never seen this in all my years of going there. The owners and staff are extremely friendly. Looking forward to my next visit!

Chilli B’s is absolutely the best place to eat in Hitchin. The menu is fantastic with so much choice. Today I had a breakfast of scrambled eggs, avocado, mushrooms and smoked salmon with added black pudding. I actually contemplated sitting there for an extra couple of hours with some tea and staying for lunch - if my metered parking hadn’t been due I probably would have done! All the staff are kind and friendly and nothing is too much trouble. Please disregard any negative reviews as there is nothing but good things to be said about it. I highly recommend everything about this place, it’s warm, beautifully decorated and the food is delicious.

Was hooked from my first visit here. Best sandwiches in the whole of Hertfordshire in my opinion. A wide selection of fresh and tasty ingredients, great bread/rolls and lots of nice additions like the local baked goods and Karma drinks for example. Staff are really friendly and helpful and take care in the preparation of food.

Overheard unpleasant and unfair comments about east European people - will never go there again. Shame but honest true.

As a family, we have been going to Chilli B for many years. The food and service has always been outstanding. We have always experienced excellent tasty food, with Sharon and Bill willingly accomodating my gluten intolerance and vegan requirements. There is always a lovely friendly, relaxed atmosphere with all staff being personable, helpful and ensuring we are happy with our food. We regularly eat in or have take aways and wholeheartedly recommend Chilli B's.

Today we went in and placed our order, it turned out they had mixed our order up with the two gentlemen near us as we ordered around the same time. When we notified the staff, they replaced our sandwiches, but when I said about notifying...

Fabulous breakfast! One of the freshest and tastiest breakfasts I have had in years! Everything was fantastic! I had the traditional and my husband had the stack which was eggs and bacon on ciabatta bread. My full English was perfection.

I am vegetarian and ordered a vegetarian sandwich. After eating most of the sandwich I then realised there was a bit of chicken in it. They clearly are not vegetarian friendly and their hygiene on their griddle where they cook the ingredients is very poor....

So many gluten free options available- I was spoilt for choice. Went for the Ben Herd.... Full of flavour, and the gluten free bread they use was pretty good (not your typical gf stale texture) A firm favourite located within the beautiful town of Hitchin....

Love this place. We regularly have a takeaway lunch and enjoy a Saturday breakfast. Food quality excellent and friendly speedy service. Keep up the good work

Been here a handful of times in my life and if it was closer to home it would be even more regular. The portion sizes are great. Lots of variety. Quick and efficient service.

From the quality of the tomato ketchup to the friendly attitude of the staff, Chilli B’s is a pleasure. The cooked breakfasts are sublime, the American pancakes are amazing and the sandwiches are to die for! It’s obvious that the owners love food themselves as...

I had the chainsaw moussaka which was okay nothing special. Some waitresses were friendlier than others. However the decor is good and service is quick.

Myself, the family (including the dog) visited Chilli B's for the first time today and it was superb. I'm not one to give out 5-star reviews a lot but this place was excellent. The staff were really friendly and chatty and the food quality was amazing. I had a Bangkok Nights baguette and the flavours were phenomenal. Everything about this establishment is brilliant.

Every time I eat a Chilli B I am never dissapointed. Jerk Chicken last night as a takeaway was unbelievable. Chilli B is like Subway on steroids. Thank you.

Just started working in hitchin so this was my first visit, good food but don’t expect service with a smile.Would go again and just get a take away.

In my opinion Chilli Banana is one of the best places I have ever eaten in. I am a vegetarian and there is such a large choice of wonderful food, puddings and cakes. All the staff and friendly. I would recommend if you're in Hitchin pop in and try it out for yourself.

Me and my mum come here every single time I am home from university. Whenever we are in Hitchin we can’t bring ourselves to go anywhere else because we love chilli b’s so much. The wraps are absolutely delicious.

I've been heading to chilli bs for 4 years now and thought it was about time to share the love! It's our go to for breakfast and lunch in hitchin. Tasty wraps and sandwiches with a huge choice of fillings. The english breakfast and pancakes are delicious. Also great coffee. Always a great bustling atmosphere inside and a little garden out the back in the summer. Definitely recommend!

ChilliB is now our choice for coffee/brunch/lunch. Efficient service, the sandwiches are awesome. Good vibe too. We prefer local businesses to the chains and ChilliB hits the spot.

After reading the menu from outside decided to pop in not just for a war drink but a bite to eat . Good menu selection and nice decor, but what I liked as a solo dinner I was welcomed as soon as i entered and had everything explained where the other seats were, that I could sit anywhere, specials on the board, full menu on table and pop up to counter to order once decided, so many times as a customer you are left floundering do i wait to be seated do I go and sit down if I do have the staff noticed my arrival if not no one will come for my order if indeed they do come or do I go back up do I have to memorise all the choices now etc. So top marks for the greeting and the way it was delivered, I made my choices mushrooms on ciabatta and an egg , offered poached or fried I had poached it was delicious good selection of teas coffees and milk alternative. Reasonable price was my first visit won't be my last

Live locally and Chilli bs is my favourite place to lunch in Hitchin. Food is fresh and great choice! Cannot beat the sandwich fillings! Always so busy and you can see how hard all the staff work!

Had tried 3 other places for lunch today but all busy but lunch for us we stumbled on Chilli B’s which we had never been in. We had the best lunch I’ve had in a long time The Starsky and Hutch was amazing and my husband loved his pulled pork ciabatta. Great coffee also! Loved the vibe and the staff were really friendly. Will definitely returning as our first choice from now on

Having had an assortment of filled paninis in recent months, with fresh coffee, I can confidently report that they are always fresh, tasty and interesting, served by friendly people. Good value for money. Only criticism is the impossible to read menu - white on pale colour in a small font is always going to be tricky for anyone over 40.

Really nice lasagne and chilli with bread, good looking cakes in the counter as well but not tried today. A large selection of fillings for ciabatta etc. Cheese on the chilli was rather pricy at £2 though.

Staff are friendly and prices excellent as large portions. My Jacket potato with Chilli con carne was good despite the chilli being too spicy for my liking. I would come here again

Amazing quality wraps and drinks. Wraps were full of ingredients and no gaps as we have found at other places. Very good choice of filling accompanied by their own homemade coleslaw! Very filling and a place we will definitely visit again.

Great wraps, coabattas samdwiches and salads to suit every taste or food preference. For the same price as an M&S; sarnue you can get a masterpirce of filling combinatikns on your choice of bread - many hot fillings. A Hitchin institution. Eat in favoured a bit by ladies who lunch and a jolly takeaway queue made up of well seasoned regulars.

Chilli B’s is always busy as they serve the most amazing wraps with all different interesting concoctions. The husband and wife team are friendly quick and fun as are all the staff. Definitely one to visit either to take away or eat in.

Came in for breakfast with my wife and got a seat after being ignored for a couple of minutes by the staff who walked past us as they served others. It was a busy morning and unfortunately the table we had was wobbly but at least we got in right away!

We regularly go to Chilli Bees for breakfast with our family, I go for the traditional whereas my son goes for the stack and wife goes for the pancakes. The quality of the food is always very good and the vCard service too.

They have a serving bar for lunch with freshly cooked sandwiches, toasties, ciabatta's etc. very delicious, I'll be gong again!

My Hubby and I love this place. It became sort of a tradition to go here on Saturday noons and have tasty ciabattas for lunch. Very friendly and helpful staff, convenient for families with babies.

Great place for a freshly prepared well filled ciabatta or sandwich. The queue appeared long but service was so organised I was soon served. Lovely friendly service and the movie themed menu was varied and unique.. we had the ‘lord of the bling’ and ‘a fish called wanda’ - both were fantastic and filling. We will be back to try more from the huge range, unless we are tempted to have the same again! Loved it.

I visited this establishment with a friend at lunch time and had the best chicken gammon and cheese ciabatta I’ve tasted in a long while. The place was very busy and the service was still great. A Lovely couple were running the place. Hats off guys keep it up.

We walked into Hitchin to visit here, a regular haunt and I ordered a favourite, the stack of pancakes with blueberries, maple syrup and American bacon. I asked for the bacon to be well done.

We've been coming here for years and the great quality has always remained the same. I love the food, favourite being Lord of the Bling! And the coffee is decent too. Very fairly priced too. Cakes always look amazing, yet to try. Polite staff, great service and always very accommodating to my toddler + pram. Thank you!

There are two parts to "Chillis" - the takeaway sandwich bar and the café to the left. I've not eaten in the café but all accounts say it is equally as good as the take-away, being driven by the two whirling dervishes that serve there!

A nice place to meet for lunch. The menu is comprehensive without being overbearing. They have a good choice of wraps, foccacias and ciabattas to choose from and not overly expensive.

I visit Chilli B’s quite often and it never fails to disappoint. The cafe has a lovely ambience with an eclectic vintage feel, and the staff serving are friendly and attentive. The sandwiches are fresh, unique and tasty and can be purchased to ‘take away’ as well as ‘eat in.’ Great choice for vegetarians like myself....my particular favourite is ‘Little Venice’ yum yum!

I have been returning to the Chilli Banana for more than three years. Great for a quick visit for a takeaway breakfast or lunch and even better to sit down with family, friends or alone for a tasty treat in the restaurant space. Lovely owners and staff, really good menu and always a good experience. Do try it!

I was not disappointed with the quality of the food, it is fantastic. The choice is extensive, in fact it took us longer to pick what we wanted than it did to eat! Everything sounds delicious, and our 2.5 year old loved her babychino! Do not think twice, have lunch here or at least get a takeaway sandwich!

Myself and my husband popped in for lunch mid week, first time we’ve been here although regulars for lunch in Hitchin. Very busy little cafe- we weren’t sure if we were supposed to wait to be seated but we managed to find somewhere to sit, it was pretty busy.

Chilli Banana was born from the Alternative Sandwich shop into the Chilli Banana then fast forward to Chilli B’s of ‘Hitch’ not to be confused with Hitchin.

What a fantastic choice of food, my wife and I were rather lucky to have made it into Chilli Banana before their lunch rush. A fine selection and plenty of cold drinks too.

Quite small and always busy...this lovely little gem is great for food and drink with a lovely atmosphere...certainly one to visit

Great choice of lunch time food, nice atmosphere, always freshly cooked. We’d give 5* if the tea mugs were upgraded, they’re a bit tired for drinking your delicious Tea-Pigs tea from.

If a better sandwich exists in the UK, I don't know where it is.....and I worked in London for 34 years, which involved a lot of sandwiches! I have reviewed this excellent establishment before, and they are not paying me (unfortunately)!

I challenge anybody to find a better sandwich, not just in Hitchin but in the world. I can assure you that you will not!! Cannot wait to return

The sandwiches are okay but over priced for what u get it has lost its to from a few years ago needs to improve and make the sandwiches more tasty have been many times in the past when it was great

Chilli B's never fails on delivering delicious breakfast and lunch with a variety of exciting options.

Best sandwich for miles around at a fair price - good and broad choice with a nice atmosphere. Would be happy to eat here frequently.

Make no mistake, the food here is very good. But the attitude at management level is often not good at all. Very up and down, sometimes friendly and accommodating and sometimes just not at all, unless 'your face fits' well that's how it feels.

One of my favourite places to eat - Have been coming here for years. My only negative comment would be I regularly feel uncomfortable with the way the manager speaks to her staff in front of customers, can be very rude.

I was introduced to this absolute gem when I was in Sixth Form, and this was the first 'posh sandwich' place I had been where I felt I was 100% getting value for money.

Simply the best. Freshly made sandwiches to order with a fantastically original menu. Staff are great and always give a warm welcome. Highly recommend

Another lovely lunch today, this time in the little garden which is a little gem! Shame that the sun parasol fell in my head and was barely acknowledged when I told one of the staff. Nonetheless myself and my friend spent a lovely afternoon catching up enjoying tea, coffee, lunch and cake which was delicious! Will definitely be back, will just watch out for the parasols in the garden!

Having eaten at this place for over 10 years all I can say is Bill and Sharon have got the right idea, a friendly service and exceptional freshly cooked food.

The place seemed nice enough and the staff were friendly. Unfortunately they had forgotten the mustard in our Ben Hurd hot griddles which left the resulting wraps rather bland. I kept eating expecting to find it, but it wasn't there. I was too hungry to give back half a wrap and wait for another so just ate it and told the waiting staff upon leaving so no-one else gets served a bland griddle. Weren't too bothered as the price kind of reflected what we were served.

All you need for your lunch. Well worth paying a little bit more than going to get a boots meal deal.get me one now... but im in Cambodia

This is the fourth or fifth time we’ve eaten here and was easily our best visit. My wife ordered a simple jacket potato with salad which she deemed was perfect while I had the Thai salad which consisted of small, marinated pieces of chicken atop rice and salad with chilli sauce on the side (I chose both hot and sweet chilli sauces).

I used to go to this place when I worked in Hitchin a long time before the lounge part opened. At half term I found my self in town with the little one and decided to give it a visit. I couldn’t see a children’s menu and asked if they had one. They didn’t but were great in making a child’s portion toasted ham and cheese sandwich . I was impressed that they did that and she loved it. In fact she even ate the crust which she never does at home, high praise indeed. I had the New Yorker I think and it was generous with the filling and very tasty. The staff were very friendly with a nice warm welcome and friendly goodbye. The only reason for four stars and not five was because the coffee that I had was not hot enough although it was very nice and strong. To be fair they were very busy, perhaps next time I’ll ask if they could make it hotter? We both enjoyed the food and the nice warm atmosphere. The price for what we had was about the same as McDonald’s but it was in a different league. Highly recommend.

Love this place, Great panini sandwiches ,have been going for over 10 years and have spread the word. Everyone love the food. Great Staff, Great Food, comes at a slight premium but it's worth it.

Its not cheap, but once bitten you will be back time and time again. Great paninis... like seriously great, don't just think sandwich shop and walk by. Try it. Lord of the Bling or Starksey and Hutch are best..

I've worked in Hitchin a few years now and often find myself coming back to Chili b's. I think the quality of food you get for the money you pay is amazing, fresh produce, delicious soft bread. The team are always so friendly and happy to help! I'd recommend getting in before 1pm on a Friday or you'll be queuing out the door.. definitely recommend!

went in for a quick lunch, we ordered sandwiches and 1 arrived wrong so was sent back, there was then confusion as to which bread was left so we couldn't get the white bread we wanted.... the bench was very wobbly and uncomfy to sit on. the table next to us sent back a cold baked potato twice then gave up and just ate it cold..... could have been handled better.

I was shocked to log on here and see a review from Hewittsc describing the owner in such a bad light, I happen to be in the shop at the time when the voucher was being discussed and I felt obligated to put forward my view regarding the situation. The lady aggressively walked from the restaurant to behind the counter and asked for the manager, Bill came over despite the shop being packed and the queue out the door and down the road. He calmly spoke to her, listened to her side of events and then explained that whilst he appreciated what she was saying, he hoped she could understand his position and that he couldn't honour a voucher. He at no point was rude, aggressive and in fact said we value your custom but please do understand where we are coming from. I have always found Bill, Sharon and the team to be lovely, helpful and friendly its such a shame when people post bad reviews and lies because of a mistake they have made! The food is fab here too. Keep doing what you do so well Bill and Sharon! x
