Decided to grab a different takeaway for a change and ordered from Chicken Shop. The chicken was great, as were the sauces that came with it. Coleslaw was tasty but unfortunately the chips were dry and tasteless, much like overnight chips. Still enjoyed the food though

Popped in with the other half without a reservation and were seated alongside served quickly. Ordered a half chicken and fried chicken 'dirty burger' with sides of sweet potato fries and crinkle chips. The rub and flavourings on the rotisserie chicken were great but it had been overcooked so did stick to your teeth (not acceptable when it's 9 quid for half a chicken...). The steaming and spit roasting we were paying the premium for were made redundant by this and it was worse than a roast chicken an average cook like me could rustle up at home for half the price. The fried chicken burger was good but there was way too much batter/coating on the chicken and the sweet potato fries were over fried so lost a lot of their flavour.Whilst the sauces provided, service and decor are great, our experience with the food left us underwhelmed. Especially at £40 quid (including a beer and glass of wine). A shame as this has the potential to be a great casual place to eat.

We popped into the Chicken shop for an early dinner with our (almost)2 1/2 year old. I'd been reading good stuff about the one in Tooting and thought worth a try of the newish incarnation in Balham etc. It's fairly small inside and decked out in a bit of a grungy way - rough wooden panelling on the walls etc. A brilliant touch is being able to see the kitchen at the back with their open flaming grill. The menu is simple it's either chicken or a few varieties of " dirty burger" ( they share the venue with them now although initially starting out by themselves). No children's menu as such but they do have high chairs. We had a whole chicken and two sides of chips in theory for the three of us although daughter made do with a few chips and tomato sauce...Still the chicken was excellent as were the chips, lovely flavour. I tried some of there hot sauce with it too which was nice but hellishly hot! Washed down with a Camden larger on tap and a fairly decent beaker ( rather than glass..) of house red the grown ups were more than happy. For us it was that much more personal and perhaps upmarket from Nando's and although they are not offering different grades of heat the chicken didn't seem to miss it plus as I said they have some table sauces to add if you wish ( hot or smokey).

I quite like the casual chicken shop vibe with dim lighting. My friend and I shared sweet potato fries with some extremely garlicy garlic mayo which was really good. We visited on a Sunday afternoon and lunch time so it was busy but were seated immediately. The waitress was very friendly, though very stretched so we did have a bit of a wait before we finally had our order taken. The milkshakes were very tasty, though could have had more ice cream- it felt a little thin compared to other restaurants around. The fries and sweet potatoes were piping hot from the fryer and well cooked, nice and fluffy on the inside yet crispy on the outside.I had the veggie option which is two portobello mushrooms with cheese, garlic mayo and rocket- very tasty. The bun was a little soft and soggy but I actually enjoyed it! The meat option was good but a little tough so probably need a few minutes less on the grill. The bacon is seriously thick- was more like a gammon steak but my partner was definitely not complaning- he was thrilled! Overall, I enjoyed the atmosphere and tasty, very fresh food. It wasn't the best I have ever had but would visit again if in the area!

We went here as a treat after a long day of packing. We usual go to Honest Burger but decided to try this place for a change. Never again. The service was super slow, and we were served well after people who came in later than us. The food (once it arrived) was really gross.I am a vegetarian, and in most cases - burger places are actually pretty good. Not in this case.Without any warning, the burger arrives and is actually two undercooked portobello mushrooms jammed together in a wet bun. It was totally inedible. The meat burger was okay, I'm told, but the sides and service were gross. We paid £36 to wait an hour for a burger, inedible slime, 2 sides and 2 beers. That included the 12.5% "service" charge. We had no service the entire time without asking for it explicitly. Super disappointed. Avoid - especially if you're a veggie!

Popped in for a bit of nosh before heading down the Bedford for some music.Chicken Shop has quite a nice atmosphere, quite busy for a midweek early evening. We got a table and had a look through the menu.Drinks were ordered, but due to phrasing on the minimal styled menus one of our party just requested the white wine in the 'great' category at £7. Our waitress didn't follow up with which white wine was wanted, so they got a mystery Sauvignon, not to their liking - however, this was changed on request for a Pinot which was more palatable.Food didn't take too long, the non dirty burger was good enough and the quarter chicken was tasty and moist (whilst hot) but did get a bit drier once cooled. Plenty of sauces on offer on the table including mustard, ketchup and their two Chicken Shop sauces, yet no mayo?? Blimey. Sides of crinkle cut chips, really tasty coleslaw and three small corn cobs where all nice, but the portions not that grand for £4 each.On the whole not a bad experience, serviceable and reliable I guess, just not mind blowing.

This place has a massive potential for improvement. So far, the only positive thing is decent food - mostly chicken + recently some burgers. Food is good, but not amazing. Just an interesting approach to serving chicken :)This place is VERY noisy. Not sure what hurts my ears most: loud music, noise from the open kitchen or plenty of people stuffed on very limited space. Customer service is terrible. Some of the staff members seem to be more interested in chatting with their mates than serving the customers. It happened to me that one of the waiters hit my head with his elbow. To be fair to him, this might have happened due to overcrowding and far too many tables in such a small place.

So, the burger is not bad, it just left me disappointed. It looked really good, and all the trimmings are tasty enough, but for me, the meat is what lets it down. It's just not up to the quality (or taste) of Hache or Honest Burgers. In fact I don't think the meat had any taste at all. To be fair, it's also half the price of those other places, so you sort of get what you pay for... Chips were fine. It turns out there was another member of staff there but she was sat at the bar eating. We waited and waited and waited as the tables around us looked fairly fed up.15 minutes later we'd still not even been approached for drinks so we got up to leave. When Chicken Shop opened in Balham, having been very popular at its nearby Tooting location, it was a great addition to the area. But it has gone downhill dramatically. Poor service, disengaged waiting staff often with inadequate language skills, and one exceptionally rude member of staff on cooking duty are all black marks. The food used to be some compensation, but my last three visits have all disappointed, with chicken overcooked, chips either underdone or overdone, and very underwhelming overpriced salad. Chicken Shop also offers takeaway, but a recent experience of that was shocking - the food ended up in the bin, as it wasn't fit to eat.

The food was decent but nothing can make up for this level of service. Things started to go wrong as soon as I arrived. My friend was already there and the waiter told me I could find her "behind the Deliveroo guy". Sure enough, my friend was sitting next to the serving counter where the delivery drivers pick up. NOT an appropriate place to sit customers for a meal! Then I waited... and waited... and waited ... for someone to come and take my drink order. After 20 minutes I had to get up and go and find a waiter elsewhere in the restaurant. I explained I had been waiting a long time and please could I order a drink. He said OK. Still nobody came to take my order. My friend had to flag down another waitress. Finally I got a glass of wine (house red, decent) and we each ordered a quarter chicken and a green salad. The meals were £12 each for three smallish chunks of chicken, some lettuce and a bit of avocado. It was nice food but way overpriced. When my friend asked for a glass of wine after we finished our meals, it never arrived. Nobody came and asked us if we wanted desert. We eventually had to flag down another member of staff to request the bill - which was the only thing brought promptly all night. Avoid this place.

Visited for a late evening meal and was immediate taken by the set up; simple menu, rotisserie chicken hot sauce on the table etc. My burger was excellent, as was the half chicken, chips and salad we had. My only fault with the food was that I didn't get asked how I would like my burger cooked and the salad hadn't been washed properly (a little gritty). Unfortunately this was all let down by the fact that the meal mentioned above came to over £30 without drinks. I would say that for a bowl of lettuce with a few slices of avocado and some mustard dressing should not cost £6 in a casual eatery. The staff were also indifferent so I didn't appreciate the automatic addition of a service charge. Overall, go for the food but only if you have extra cash.

Lovely, friendly girl greeted us and literally enticed us in. She even ensured my burger was customised for a vegan. But after that things just went downhill. £6 for a burger which is ok...but the vegan burger which was the same price as the other we ordered was half the size. Honestly wasn't going to care too much at that stage. But we ordered a side of the salad which is literally 4 small pieces of avocado and 2/3 spinach leaves...£6! Without trying to be funny I literally had to walk up to menu board to check I was viewing the price correctly. It should have costed £2 tops based on what you get. Also, 2 pieces of the avocado were black. I raised this with the manager who responded 'sometimes they are like that'. That is a poor response from a manager. Avocados which are black (on the inside of course) should simply not be served to customers. She then told me it would be sorted yet it remained on the bill. I called her over again asking why it was still on the bill and then she eventually removed it reluctantly. The rest of the staff were really attentive and can't fault them but I have to say a negative feeling overall.

The Chicken Shop was recommended to me by a friend so I decided to try it for lunch for me and two children - I should have checked the menu and prices first! The menu was limited to, understandably, chicken with various sides such as chips, salad and corn on the cob. Having ordered chicken, I was surprised that the chips, which were delicious, were an extra charge. The desserts were limited as well and there was nothing on the board about the brownie having nuts in it.The meal was very expensive, around £65.00 for three main meals, two desserts and one soft drink each. The staff were friendly but had the annoying habit of gathering next to our table and discussing various patrons in their own language. There was a damp smell in the restaurant which wafted through every now and again.Don't think that we will go back.

Quick delivery by Deliveroo, piping hot chicken and sides - corn on the cob, coleslaw, and chips. The first thing we noticed was that this was no bog standard rotisserie chicken, it had been marinated / basted in a tasty sauce that was complimented by the selection of hot sauces they provided - delicious. Chips were crunchy and other sides good. Highly recommended and will order again.

I came here last night with my wife as we live 100 yds away and there really is no excuse to not having been since it opened 8-9 months ago. I've also been curious as to why it's always so packed given its predecessor, Poulet Rouge, which also did rotisserie chicken, failed.Anyway, it was certainly worth the trip and we'll be back. As the menu is more or less set to just chicken, salad, coleslaw and chips, all the food comes very quickly. The quality is excellent and the place has a really lively atmosphere. The only reason for 4 stars (instead of 5) is that it's slightly on the expensive side given they only serve chicken and it has such a high turnover of customers. That said, I love to see a local place do well.....good luck to you

Good food and service, and cheap. Don't expect lots of choice, basically chicken with a few egg dishes thrown in for good measure. Better than Nandos, chicken tasty, sides all good, with good size portions. I had apple pie for dessert and it was quite simply the best apple pie I've ever had, and I've had a lot. Even better than my grandmother's (well almost)

The food is nice, but pretty average and quite over priced for what it is, it's basically a snazzy Nandos, I'm not the biggest Nandos fan however on this occassion I would've preferred to have gone to Nandos!! Save yourself a bit of spare change. Chicken & Egg shop took over what used to be Poulet Rouge, which was a great independent restaurant which unfortunately never 'took off' such a shame. BRING IT BACK !

I went here once for lunch and it was what I expected...a lot of chicken on the menu! It is what it is, a restaurant with a buzzing atmosphere serving chicken. I got one of the sandwiches and chips - it was so big you could have shared. It's a more expensive meal in Balham for what it is, but it was great to try.

Stumbled across this and although more substantial and expensive than we were after we gave it a go. Nice chicken and egg grits and excellent chips and one particularly hot sauce. Not cheap at about £10 ea for a snack but we had great and friendly service in a nice atmosphere

After convenience I decided to spend my evening meal at Chicken & Egg Shop together with a friend. The restaurant was half full and we were asked to wait 10-15 minutes for a table, hungry and lack of better judgement we agreed to wait outside. Once seated we received our menu in fashionable order, but everything else after this point was not. After 15 more minutes to order we got our food shortly after. It looked delicious and for two starving mammals it shouldn't have taken long for the food to be devoured. But what a disappointment, the first bite was not juicy or anyway succulent. You know when you overcook the chicken so the breast is like cardboard and the only flavor coming from its complementary - that is what we had. Card board box with sauce. Lacking of taste we ordered dessert to satisfy our taste buds. All in all, please go to Chicken & Egg Shop and spend your hard earned money for a lacking service and tv dinner for just £15!

The chicken is good. But at £10 for half and sides costing £5, it is a very steep meal. Plus, their egg menu is hopeless - the portions tiny (just one egg!) And not that tasty.

If you are looking for simple, straightforward food, then this is the place. It has a cheap café feel with a very basic menu on the wall - the name of the place tells you what is on the menu.It gets very busy so expect to wait for a table. You will then understand why. The food is freshly cooked and delicious, and all our table loved it.The atmosphere is busy with friendly service. Wine can be ordered by the jug.Well worth visiting.

Im a regular from the tooting branch, I always used to go there, but I just realized that they opened another shop in Balham which is closer to home.I tried the egg menu (chicken sandwich) which was very good, this shop is giving a bit more of flexibility in the menu items, but anyway, the chicken is just amazing and the best I ever had.Service was friendly and quick, the restaurant was not too busy as Tooting is, however was a nice an lovely atmosphere. Will 100% recommend.

I had been to a couple of the other chicken shops so when I heard the Chicken AND EGG shop had opened round the corner I had to try it out. I often frequent the Holborn site as it is not far from my work and I know my colleagues head there from time to time too. I went to Balham with a couple of friends and had such a lovely evening, they had the chicken and fries and lettuce and avocado salad and I tried the fried egg and grits, which I was sceptical about but It was amazing! It is a cool little restaurant away from the hustle and bustle of central London and just round the corner from my flat, the music is sometimes a bit bizarre but we liked it and the staff are lovely and from all over the world. I’d seen a few negative comments on here but I have been going to the Chicken shops for a couple of years now and have never had a bad experience, its simple and down to earth which is what I want for my dinner on my way home from work!

What a great night! I have been to the chicken and egg shop a number of times since it opened an I've never been disappointed. The chicken and fries are amazing and everyone has to try the apple pie!!!!! Last week my girlfriend and I went for a date night and I tried the chicken and fried egg sandwich, even for dinner it was a great size and absolutely delicious, my girlfriend had the chicken and egg salad which again was perfect. I'm so glad a chicken shop opened in Balham, I've got to know the lovely staff and it'll be my regular go to place!

Contrary to some of the other reviews, we had good friendly service and good food (me, my wife and out 2 week old daughter) and I hope I'll be back!. The whole chicken was very tasty and had good sauces to accompany it, the colslaw was ok and the apple pie for desert was really good (great pastry) - the waitress brought it over in the dish and asked how big a serving we wanted. The only downer was that the crinkle cut chips were too crispy / crunchy (you know - too many of the hard fried bits that normally come at the bottom of the bowl). But otherwise, we thought it was great on a Tuesday lunchtime and I'd recommend it. Not terribly cheap: £42 for whole chicken, coleslaw, fries, apple pie and two cokes.

How difficult can it be to cook up some Chicken, Eggs and Fries? As it turns out very difficult apparently!Recently visited with friends and we left our details with one of the staff to call us when a table was available (approximate 45-minute wait which was fine, we were in no rush). After a hour we had heard nothing so returned to the restaurant and sat at the small bar for a further 15-minutes before being seated. We each then ordered and I went with the Chicken Sandwich with a fried egg on top but was told that they had no fried eggs but could give me a boiled one instead. I am still not sure how in a restaurant you can only boil an egg but not fry it! Anyway, no big deal, decided to go with the boiled option. Our food arrived around 15-minutes later which seemed quite a long time given the simplicity of the food, well I say ours, everyone got a meal but me! My order had somehow been missed and I had to wait another 10-minutes for my food (maybe just unlucky but was getting very disappointed by this stage). The sandwich itself was very average, chicken was a bit dry and the boiled egg was stone cold, it just didn't taste right. We were offered dessert on the house at the end of the meal but did not actually receive an apology for the poor service (I'm a bit of a "manners cost nothing" person).I passed as my main had been so bad but the sides were good (grits, fries and salad). Despite reasonable prices, the whole experience was pretty forgettable sadly, a bit like the service, won't be going back.

To provide some context me and my wonderful girlfriend were looking for somewhere to enjoy a meal on a pleasant Sunday evening in Balham. Living nearby the Chicken & Egg we pass it regularly on our commute and are often taken by how busy it is. We (I say we - I was pushing to go elsewhere...) decided that we should finally give it a go.First off, the menu is relatively simple. This seems to be the 'in' thing for restaurants now but I would have preferred to see slightly more depth to the menu. No starters were available which is fairly unusual. Now, I don't always choose starters (maybe 20% of the time), but it just feels comforting to know they're there. I thought they'd at least want to make some crazy extra margin from a bread platter. Anyway, we went for the whole chicken to share, that way you save £1 rather than getting two separate halves. In addition, one portion of chips and coleslaw. All of these were great and I can't really fault the food at all - think posh Nando's. The atmosphere was cosy and warm, however the experience/service to me felt somewhat functional - it just felt like a spark was missing. I'm the kind of guy that grimaces whenever I see a 12.5% 'discretionary' service charge, so it was a shame to see that at play here. I could write an essay on tipping, but I'll stop there. A few extra points:- The door was really heavy, even I struggled- The hot sauce was too hot, stick to the smokey option if you're not as brave as me- The cider was described as a pint on the main menu (568ml) however it actually came in a bottle of 330ml. For £4.50 that's pretty outrageousI'm aware some of the above could be perceived to be fairly negative, but all in all this is restaurant is worth a go. Personally, if seeking chicken I'd stick with Nando's as I feel it offers greater value.

Very much disappointed with my experience at this restaurant. We were completely ignored when walking in. We walked right to the back of the restaurant and were still ignored until we asked a waiter if we could order some takeaway. We were then told to wait with no apology for the lack of service. The restaurant was only half full and they seemed to have no staff looking after tables. Staff were all at the back of the restaurant. We ordered two chicken and egg sandwiches and fries which once we got home were both missing the egg. With a menu so simple it is hard to see how a order could be got wrong. We were asked again if we were eating in or having a takeaway by another waitress who was rather abrupt and short before she gave us our food. There seems to be a lack of communication between the staff and no front of house to greet customers. As a local in the area I will not be recommending this restaurant. Average food and staff that really looked like they just could not be bothered.

This is a new outpost alongside its sister restaurant in Tooting. Chicken. And only chicken. It has great days, and less good days when the chicken is more tired, and the sauce not as consistent. Typical meal is a whole grilled chicken, with colesale, fries and garlic mayonnaise. Pudding is a large helping of apple pie, which is very good although expensive at £6.50 or so. A meal for 2 is £35 without wine. The areas it could improve in are the drinks: all their wines are disappointing, from the house through to the "good" variety. Cheap ginger beer in cans like from the corner shop whereas as most places at least serve Fentimans or equivalent nowadays.

I'm still sat in the restaurant after eating an absolutely incredible full English. Every single ingredient was fresh and full of flavour. Will definitely be back. Great atmosphere space around tables and wonderful friendly staff. We didn't have chicken although could see it on the rotisserie and it looked amazing.....next visit!

My girlfriend and I went here this week. We had half a chicken, chips, coleslaw and corn on the cob. The chicken is immense. I am a fan of Nandos but this is next level. The chicken is so moist. The coleslaw is fantastic as well. The beer is good as well. The place is always busy and the staff are really friendly and attentive

Positives - Service was very quick, efficient and friendly without feeling rushed. We were in on a Thursday at 2.30pm so were pretty much the only people in the restaurant which might have helped here. I have eaten in here when it was under the Poulet Rouge ownership and they have done a very good job making over the restaurant since then (which was in itself perfectly nice). Negatives - the pricing seems pretty off, £18 for a chicken and circa £4 for sides seems expensive for what are ultimately nice but not mindblowing dishes. Given the price and the relatively limited selection I would have expected the food to be incredible but it was just a bit so-so.Overall, it was a perfectly pleasant experience but for a third less you could get something similar from Nandos or for less than half one of the already cooked chickens in Sainsburys across the road and make your own chips.

This was a double birthday event and I thought Nando's plus when I walked in but I soon changed my mind. I love this place. the staff are fabulous and nothing is too much trouble. the food is great, Chicken excellent, Chips are almost to die for, great corn and a super salad with avocado. The sauce on the table is £3 and I just had to have one. The Balham site is maybe not in the most desirous position but i'd make this my regular stop. Oh and desserts should not be missed. Def not a Nando's plus!

This is a super little place, nothing fancy, but everything is good. The chicken is free-range and beautifully rotisserie-cooked, and I love the sides - buttery soft lettuce and avocado salad, dreamy creamy coleslaw, and chips that are served hot and crispy every time. The deep-dish apple pie is like home-made.

I live just down the road from this newly opened branch of Chicken Shop. (This place has a brunch menu which is I guess why it's called "- & Egg -".) There was another chicken restaurant, Poulet Rouge, on the site until about a month ago - they served lovely chicken but didn't attract customers. This isn't a problem here! We'd heard raves about the Chicken Shop in Tooting, but never got there. I'm glad that they've opened here. The chicken was delicious - and free range which is reassuring. The sides were much better than at Poulet Rouge - beautiful butter lettuce and avocado salad, crinkle cut fries which were hot and crispy (how depressing is it to get your fries after they've been cooling and getting soggy under heat lamps, as at so many of the burger chains?!), and tasty cole slaw, finely cut with just the right amount of colour and mayonnaise. The brownie was a bit of a disappointment: either it was stale, overcooked, or had been warmed in a microwave, maybe a combination, but it splintered as we tried to cut into it with a fork. My husband ate it anyway, but I noticed that a couple of more discerning diners at a nearby table shared my opinion and sent theirs back. The deep dish apple pie looked a better bet. The staff are a delight, very welcoming without being overly so, never far when you need them. We ate early, about 6.30, and by 7.00 the place was full, with people waiting for tables. This is all managed very efficiently, tables are cleared quickly and no one appeared to wait longer than necessary. Wishing them success!

There was a real buzz around my friends in Balham when it was announced Tooting's hip and hugely popular Chicken Shop was opening a branch in the little lamented Poulet Rouge site which closed a few months ago. Be assured, this was going to be the chicken venue that would blow Nandos out of the water, I was told. Never mind that the last chicken joint opened in a blaze of glory and then fizzled out. Having eagerly visited last night I left a little disappointed by my experience and a feeling of guilt that I was using the corporate juggernaut that is Nandos to measure against this sparky little challenger. There are certainly things to recommend this place, such as a good quality, generous portion of chicken (which was cooked, but barely warm), quality sides (coleslaw and corn on the cob) but I thought several things did not really work. Firstly the crinkle cut chips were very dry and lacking in any taste. Then there the metal dishes that were used to serve the items in. You get a dish for each item and a spare for your bones which can make the small 2 person tables very cluttered. I would have swapped the main metal dish for a proper plate so you can pile your sides onto it and not eat from different dishes. The tiny cups that contained the ketchup and mayonnaise were not enough for 2 people, though they did have two proper bottles of BBQ and hot sauce which were excellent. The menu is simple but lacks a vegetarian offer or much of a variety of salads. There is a similar feel of the Franco Manca philosophy of keeping the menu to a single page and concentrating on a few core items. The bill came to £40 for two breasts, chips, one coleslaw and one corn, which was a touch pricey. A 12.5% service charge is automatically added, which is something I am never keen on unless it is a group booking. Overall I think I would go back, but it needs a tweak or two if it is to avoid the fate that befell its predecessor in a town which might be approaching saturation point for eating out.

I came in at 22:20 asking for one sandwich only and takeaway , the staff refused to serve me claiming his manager instructed to stop taking orders at 22:15 despite it says on google they close at 23:00 and he was accepting online orders, I don’t have any issues with theier choice of closing but at least you need to be accurate and state this note on google maps , thank you for refusing to serve me 45 mins before closing time And for your apologies ,Its not acceptable because the staff called you and you confirmed you have closed already and I should leave the store , please show some honesty at least

I thought I’d treat myself to my favourite burger place after being out of London a while, what has happened?! The salad dressing was poured into a burger box which obviously leaked through, over everything else and through the delivery bag and is now all over my floor. The chicken tenders were overcooked and dry, I wonder how long they have been sitting around. The (gluten free) burger bun also overdone and dry. Just bad all round.
