Had a takeaway from Chew Valley Raj when staying nearby. It was perfect. Very good quality -huge pieces of meat and tasty sauces. We had the set meal for 2 people but it was so generous it would easily have been enough for 3 - maybe even four if we'd bought an extra rice.

Indian takeaway in the local pub. Nice big menu with good range of options. Very popular and busy on the Friday I went. Food was a little salty I found. Also, rather surprised the balti came without a naan, had to pay extra for that. In my 45 year experience a balti always comes with a naan included, so I was a little peeved about that.

When first going in it’s a bit confusing as the reception for the Indian is in the bar, but the pub is actually a separate business. Drinks in the restaurant are somewhat limited and you can’t order from the bar, so if you wish it’s best to get a round in before you actually go through to your table. Menu is amazing, have never seen so many choices. Price and quality outstanding and fantastic staff. Booking is a must, as it is quite small, but for value, quality and service, maybe the best Indian I’ve ever had. And it’s been a few!

Absolutely lovely food, and being a regular was very disappointed in the service we received. We had booked a table, Very rushed and as soon as we finished was told they needed the table, so no time for coffee or desert. Finished our drinks outside. The last three times we have been has not been as welcoming as before all seems so rushed now. Such a shame, not sure if we will go back.

We got takeaway from here tonight as our local was unexpectedly closed but we had our hearts set on curry! We did a fair bit of research before choosing the Raj and the reviews averaged better than a lot of others locally so we placed an order via Chef Online (a very easy process) We had poppadoms, chutneys, chicken chat, sheesh kebab and chicken tikka for starters, then chicken tikka masala, mixed biriyani and sag aloo for mains. We really enjoyed all of it. Good quality and flavours and decent portions. It’s based alongside the pub, so you go in the door to your right and it’s at the back. Plenty of parking in the pub car park. The food kept nice and hot even though we live 20 minutes away.

So we booked the Chew Valley Raj mainly because our local Indian (Sutton Spice) has clashed down. This was my first visit to the establishment and I got a little confused as the Raj shares the same building as the Pub but you can order a limited selection of drinks from the Restaurant or order from the pub and carry through to the main eating area. On to the food; to be honest it was pretty decent and all 6 members of our party seemed happy with their selection. We had a good variety of dishes and the starters came up quickly but the main dishes did take around 35 mins. Portion size was very good and as always we over ordered. There only seemed to be one waiter working and considering how busy the place was he did well. All in all everyone seemed to enjoy the meal, drinks and price wise it was in line with other restaurants of this style. We have subsequently had a take away from the restaurant and it was one of the best we have ever had... so I would recommend both dinning in or take away.

Después de haber recorrido Chew Valley Raj en nuestro camino hacia y desde Bristol y leer las críticas en TripAdvisor, pensamos que lo probaríamos. ¡Hemos visitado 3 veces en las últimas semanas y nos encanta! We have had many takeaways from the Chew Valley Raj, all of which we have enjoyed tremendously. The staff are very friendly and Daz is the man! So last time, when the menu said my curry was 'cooked with cinnamon' I fully expected it to have had a cinnamon stick in at some point, but also that it would have been removed before presentation! Unfortunately, not only was the cinnamon stick still in my meal, it had been splintered, each mouthful seemed to contain pieces of the wood, some 2 or 3cm long, others tiny splinters. Last night we returned to the Chew Valley Raj, and mentioned my experience to Daz. Unfortunately, he didn't seem at all interested, saying it is put there for flavour, and sometimes people bite them, I explained that this was most definitely not the case, and that I regularly use cinnamon sticks in my cooking. We had no apology, no offer of compensation of any sort, and Daz only agreed to speak to the chef when my husband insisted upon it. I am very sad to say we will not get another takeaway from the Chew Valley Raj.

We had a meal here on 4/7/15. Overall a very pleasant experience.Situated in a decent pub which serves good beer, the restaurant is clean and an inviting place to eat. The service was excellent and the food arrived quickly. The poppadoms we started with were delicious and came with a range of really good chutneys. The chicken was perfectly cooked and the portions are generous. If I'm being pernickety, the sauce was a little too sweet in all our dishes and they all tasted the same. This may be because the dhansak and the samba are fairly similar dishes.I'd eat here again.

We stayed in the family room for one night, having booked by phone, and were glad to leave the following day: the mattress in the double bed was uncomfortable; the brown bedding on both beds did not smell fresh; the strip light above the mirror in the bathroom did not work and no effort was made to fit another bulb; the fitting of the towel rail was loose (it came off in the middle of the night); the shower produced a trickle of water and only by continuously pressing the on/off button, and the electrical fittings in the shower unit appears to be dangerous: the cable comes in at the top in a way that suggests water can get at it. This chimed with what looked like rather 'adventurous' wiring we noticed on our way up the stairs. We thought a wonderful breakfast would make up for the grotty room and justify the £90-a-night charge. Apart from the table not having been wiped clean from the night before, there was no 'starter' (no juice, no cereal), only a plate of 'full English': a fried egg, some very tasty bacon, baked beans, tinned tomatoes with their juice running all over the plate, two frazzled sausages which looked as if they had been left over from the previous day, and white toast that seemed to have been made hours earlier. At the time we did not complain because the man who had served breakfast seemed very busy and not the person in charge but, given our experience at the Stoke Inn, we did ask afterwards for a partial refund of £30. We have not had a reply. The only good memory of the Stoke Inn are the food and the service at the in-house Chew Valley Raj which is run by different people.

We popped in for a drink in the 'Pub part' of this dual facility Pub / Indian restaurant. First impressions in the Car Park weren't great - there was a car 'up on bricks'. The 'front of house' of the Raj Restaurant was very engaging and though we weren't eating, from reviews it seems to offer very good food. However beware if you choose to have a preprandial in the pub! The chap behind the bar was hardly welcoming - despite our efforts to be interactive - and then he tried to pull the oldest trick in the pub landlord book. My friend bought two pints and paid with a £20 note. The 'Landlord' gave him £2 (approx) change. "Um, I gave you a twenty pound note..." my friend said immediatley... and without event trying to disguise his outrageous attempt to rip us off, he said "oh yeah" and gave us the tenner due. There was no embarassment, no apology nor even a futile attempt to cover his tracks. It was just laughable how blatant this was. Given it was 6pm on a Saturday night, we spent the next five minutes trying to decide if he was crooked or just stupid or both? Ordinarily I always make a point of taking my glass back to the bar ( my upbringing was that it's a common courtesy to do so) but we decided on this occasion to leave our glasses on the table. The pub actually has a lovely open fire and is quite 'snug', but clearly the morality of this barman went up the chimney in smoke some while ago. We won't be going back, and if you do pop in for a drink, I would strongly advise taking lots of change so you can pay with exact money. I feel I must re-iterate: The Indian Restaurant seems completely separate and this review should not put you off trying their food.

I live not far from the Chew Stoke in and was excited when an Indian Restaurant opened in the pub. I am of Bangladeshi decent and have a high standard of expectation when it comes to Indian food. This indian is in part of the pub, which hasn't been altered to take into account the new restaurant. We were taken through to a side room which lacked any atmosphere. We are vegetarian and ordered a variety of vegetarian side dishes, dhall and vegetable patia and dhansak. The vegetable side dishes were not too bad but the vegetable curries were made with small pieces of what was probably frozen vegetables and no brinjal or bendi in sight The waitress was also no where to be seen, chatting to other staff around the corner and most unfriendly when we tried to engage her in conversation. This restaurant was not bad but it had average food, with a souless atmosphere and unfriendly staff. we will still be driving into Bristol to eat in much better restaurants.

We live in the same village as this pub/restaurant and have been using it even before it became an 'Indian'. In the early days the waiters were very, well, "Indian" - lots of smiling and bowing but not much communication - a lot better now with younger, but still Asian, waiters who can hold a conversation and advise on meal choices. I love my Lamb Pasanda and they do a great version. My wife prefers the veggie dishes and is also pleased with the results. Large car-park if travelling from outside the village - we walk there (and stagger home - from too much food not too much booze!).

I live in a village quite close to Chew Stoke, and drive though Chew Stoke (and the Raj at Stoke Inn) on my way to and from work. Recently we have gone off the Indian restaurant in our village as a couple of meals in a row had left us feeling rather disappointed. So the next time we felt the urge for a curry, I called the Raj, and collected a meal on the way home. The takeaway meal was ready when I requested it, was priced fairly, and turned out to have a free side dish with it for me as a new customer. When we got the food home, it was miles better than our local alternative. I plan to stop past the Raj again, and maybe 'eat in' soon too.

Its a strange place really, having and Indian restaurant in a pub, the good thing is that you can order your takeaway and have a decent drink in the pub for a sensible price while waiting. The dining rooms is nice, clean and comfortable, service is also very good here. The guys working there are quite chatty and will advise on an a meal if you are unsure what to have. If there is anything not on the menu and they know how to cook it then they will, they make the best garlic chilli nan I have ever had. i have had a lot of curries, been to most of the curry houses around Bristol and somerset, this is my favourite for sure.Latest i had a curry was last night, good as ever.

We visited this restaurant based within The Stoke pub last Friday evening. We didn't fancy cooking and thought we'd give this nearby restaurant a try. We were very impressed by the food, poppadums with selection of chutneys to start, followed by Prawn Masala for me and a lamb dish for my husband. All was very tasty and served in a timely fashion. A particular highlight was the garlic naan bread which we shared! Also impressed by the prices, I think these are influenced by the fact that the majority of their trade is take - away. Appears to be increasing in popularity - and it's easy to see why.

What a fantastic first time visit. Great food very authentic, it arrived in very quick time-hot and full of flavour. The staff were very friendly and took time to talk and explain the menu. Rishy thank you for your service and conversation, as promised we will be back next time we are in Bath. The idea of bring your own booze although not new compliments the experience. Thanks guys.

A "Thumbs Up" from me. Indian Sodas - Thumbs Up and Limca Their is only a subtle difference between these drinks and their western counterparts (coke and lemonade). Thumbs Up is flavoured with sugar instead of high fructose syrup, and consequently their is a caramel note. Limca as both lemon and lime juice in it's recipe which adds a subtle tartness when compared to Lemon Fanta I would recommend getting one for novelty - however they are by no means necessary for your experience here. Squid Koliwada (Small Plate) It is not everyday that you find fish on the menu at an Indian - much less squid. Intrigued and feeling adventurous I ordered it. The squid itself was well cooked and crucially it was not too thick nor to thin. Too thick and it is too rubbery - too thin and it feels that you get all batter. The sticky spicy sauce was tasty and added a Thai note to the dish. Ample spring onion and chilli ensured texture and flavour changed throughout the experience. Nannwich - Chicken Tikka (Large Plate) I was not in the mood for a curry and decided to try this novel menu item, however this is where Bandook let itself down; Firstly - the filling of the sandwich was lukewarm. I imagine this is on account of preparing the food of my other 4 colleagues, and neglecting to put the item under a heat lamp, or at least, forgetting to remove the top part of the naan, shielding the filling from the heat. Secondly - the filling itself left something to be desired. It was incredibly dry. Vegetables and chicken tikka, but no sauce! I was provided a thimble of tomato ketchup, but it was not sufficient to lubericate the contents of the sandwich. Thirdly - the ketchup itself was an odd paring with naan bread. Perhaps a korma/dopiaza style sauce would lend itself better. Overall 4/5. Would recommend - but don't have the nannwich.
