The café has beautiful outdoor dining, located directly at the castle. The service was very friendly and attentive. Unfortunately, the coffee from the portafilter machine wasn't that good and the paninis, although freshly prepared, were simple. We sat outside and enjoyed the view and the atmosphere of the castle.

Wonderful place, patient, friendly staff, with knowledge of food and vegan options. The coffee was delish and very well made. Try the paninis for an airy delucious bread, very well made and reasonable price.

Now that Geo's have taken over the coffee is now excellent. Great flat white and Frappé. Cake was also yummy 😋

A Brew-Tea-Ful Location with a Tea-Licious Menu! Service was usually friendly, sometimes dismissive. Outdoor seating is very unique; with beautiful natural lighting under chestnut trees and peacocks strutting around, there’s nothing like it. Their desserts are quite yummy and not too expensive. The scones are pretty good but on the dry side, and the iced coffee is absolutely delicious!! They have many coffee syrup flavours (although I would prefer if they were listed) and the brewed coffee is good quality. Their crockery is a pink toile pattern, absolutely adorable. Overall, I would recommend you visit Chestnut’s after touring the castle - it’s the perfect spot for an afternoon tea.

Great atmosphere, super friendly stuff. Amazing place to relax after hours of walking around the gardens . We ordered a cream tea , which was very nice and beautifully served.

Disappointing. Overpriced food which was in any event rather underwhelming. Captive market and clearly exploiting the lack of compensation.

Cafe at the beautiful Herstmonceux Castle. The vegan options were limited to a vegan sausage roll or a vegan cake/slice. The jacket potato with cheese & beans was vegan if you didn't have the cheese, or dressing on the side salad. I had the jacket potato, but they forgot the dairy-free spread, so quite dry & bland

Small on-site cafe selling a small range of items including some vegan and gluten free options. Some seating indoors but more outside. We asked if it was possible to warm up a sausage roll but were informed that it wasn't possible.

Abysmal. We chose afternoon tea for two. No freshly made finger sandwiches as advertised, just pick from the pathetic selection of two prepackaged sandwiches, tuna or BLT. The scones were dry and unappetising. No hot food as advertised. No thought for dietary requirements of any kind. No sign to say what's in the kids meal box. We ordered a muffin each for an extra treat, part way through unwrapping mine I realised it wasn't what I asked for and took it back, the girl on the counter put it straight back onto display half unwrapped! Young kids working there seemingly on their own, in need of better training and supervision. No fresh food, sad that with a full working kitchen, not even the sandwiches were made on premises. What we hoped was going to be a lovely treat in the gorgeous surroundings turned out to be a real disappointment.

Very few sandwiches available at 11am. Very little available at 1pm and no vegetarian or gluten free options left so one of our party had to go without. Staff seemed unhappy making service a less than pleasurable experience. Not asked if we wanted to eat and drink inside or outside so not given the option of a takeaway cup. Our cream tea was very disappointing for two of our party who are gluten intolerant. Rather than a gluten free scone they were given chocolate brownies without any cream. Suggest a bit more thought about this needed. Also being more accommodating with parties when it's raining outside and there isn't enough seating inside rather than telling us off for bringing the outside chairs inside and telling us to take them out again meaning some of our party had to eat standing up. When asked if an umbrella could be put up a rather sharp 'we'll have to get security to do that' was received. What should have been an enjoyable experience was spoilt somewhat by these things.

Really great little cafe to have a coffee, ice cream, cake, cream tea or snack either inside or out. Limited seating outside in shade on a blazing day. Very nice if you can get to sit outside next to the castle and a view to the grounds. The prices are really good, especially for a tourist attraction. Perhaps they keep the prices low for the benefit of the students who study at the castle. The Flat White was excellent, but could have benefitted from being a bit warmer.

Herstmonceux Castle cafe is wheelchair accessible. Good quality sandwiches and paninis. Cream teas. Spacious outside seating area too. Helpful staff.

We were going to a friends party 3 minutes from Buffalo Bills so the location was perfect for us to get out heads down for the evening. The friendly hotel owner greeted us on a arrival and was very helpful explaining the process of finding our room and using the TV etc. In the morning we struggled to find a taxi back to our car that was left at the party the evening before, and the owner kindly organised one for us. A very friendly service with a room that was clean and perfect for our needs for one nights stay.

Brilliant new proprietors from March 2024 with very high standards. So ignore 2023 reviews and the food and other pics are out of date. The accommodation area is not open yet as major refurb in progress. I went up for a music night in July and I am going up this week to sample the pub menu, and will certainly be booking ahead as soon as the hotel part does open, as I don’t drive, so a relaxing visit to Wadhurst for me, require a stop over. I am confident this team’s famous high standards will transform this historic building into a classy stay. The kitchen is entirely new, state of the art, and sparkling and immaculate, ( I was given a tour ) and I am looking forward to traveling to Wadhurst now they are serving food, as I know this chefs food is top notch. And with the welcoming bar team, I will feel comfortable and looked after. As a fussy woman who is used to dining alone, or taking others to dine in top establishments around the foodie cities of Brighton, Malaga and Paris, I have a high standard for hospitality and food. The new proprietors at the Greyhound are warm and welcoming and have high standards of hygiene and hospitality, I know this from their other ventures, I can’t wait to eventually stay over and enjoy the village of Wadhurst when the hotel part opens. Until then I am taking the bus up from Brighton this week to sample the new pub menu, as I know the chef is first class, and with such a good hospitality team I can confidently invite a party of people knowing they will be happy and looked after. On the new menu I will report my findings in detail!
