It is when you come to pay the bill, that you really feel you have not had value for money. I had whitebait which was overcooked and completely tasteless - very crunchy. I then had ham, egg and chips which is always a good indication of how competent the chef is. The ham was dry and I had the top slice from the joint which should have been discarded - it was so brown and chewy. I had affogato but the coffee was pretty cold. We were meeting up with old friends and I didn’t want to make an issue of it but felt very resentful when the comparatively large bill turned up.

A group of us visited in June. The service was poor at best with a complete lack of interest by either of the young ladies serving. One friend, a vegan, chose the only option on menu to be told it was unavailable but wasn't then offered anything else so while we had a meal she had soup and a starter platter of bread an olives! Have sent two emails of complaint neither received a response. Would not eat there again!!

Found it difficult to choose from the menu..so my wife had 2 starters - soup rather thin and bland, prawn cocktail good. I had whitebait - not crispy and ham egg and chips - a large helping of ham, 4 slices but a bit dry. Main disappointment was the constant stream from garden customers through the restauarant to the toilet....not possible to put in an entrance from the garden?

Waited ages for food and then discovered our order had got lost, due to a system crash losing our order!! 2 hour wait! The quality of the food was very good, excellent sweet breads and fish but there was no seasoning and therefore all was very bland and lacked flavour. I understand that there is an arguement for not over seasoning good produce but virtually no flavour is a shame. Was this deliberate, in regard to a concern for people with salt issues? I had to add my own seasoning at the table which was not ideal.

We were told it was table service but it was extremely hard to get served and in most cases we had to go the bar to order drinks, condiments etc. Even when I did go to the bar, despite there being at least four members of staff it was difficult to get there attention as they openly had a chat while customers waited. The roast I ordered didn't come with the sides as stated on the menu and when i mentioned it to our server she said they were "hidden underneath" the roast (they weren't) and then she disappeared. The food in general was OK but the potatoes were very stale, definitely a few days old. I ordered my sons dessert while we were still on mains because the service was so slow and didn't want him waiting but it still took three reminders and his icecream arrived after everyone had their puddings. Overall wouldn't return.

I took my daughter and partner for Sunday lunch. My daughter had never been there before. From the moment of our arrival the staff were fantastic. The food. I had a mixed roast. My guests half portions, which in hind sight so should I, was the best in any restaurant I’ve experienced. We could not have had a better experience. Well worth the trip. You must book as the number of people who all appear to have enjoyed their experience talk of returning. The staff were great. Full marks to all there. Jerry Copping

Service was terrible. We had to keep going to the bar to ask for drinks, condiments, cutlery etc Large fish and chips was the same size as a co diners small except a few more chips.when this was mentioned to the waiter we were offered some extra chips. Both the fish & chips were not freshly cooked and had obviously been cooked and kept warm for some time. Not crispy. Ketchup & mayonnaise served in the same pot!! We went to the bar to pay and a customers dog was lying in front of the restaurant exit in full view of all the bar staff. He didn’t move the dog out of the way so we had to step over the dog to get out. No one asked him to move the dog from being a trip hazard. When paying the bill we asked that the discretionary 12% service charge be removed as we didn’t get good service. We were told they were not able to remove it so gave us a complementary drink instead but no apology. Walking to the car on checking the bill we noticed we had been charged for a bottle of Prosecco instead of a glass. Went back again no apology from the young man got the bottle refunded but still out of pocket on the service charge against the £32.95 bottle There was a lady behind the bar that had just started service who was the only person to offer an apology. Such a shame as we went regularly during the summer and food was always good. Also prices on website are not the same as on the restaurant menu. We Won’t rush back

What a great afternoon we had here - we visited on Sunday for a beautiful Sunday lunch. The shoulder of lamb was cooked perfectly and came with a large variety of vegetables; potatoes, swede mash, parsnips and more! The service was quality - and quick. You didn’t have to wait long for anyone to take your order. The staff are lovely and welcoming and the pub itself is in a beautiful location about 5 minutes drive from Henley town centre. They have a lovely garden area which will be amazing to visit in the summer. We can’t wait to come back :) Lauren @travelmadtot

I really wanted to like this pub and met friends here before Christmas. I’m reticent to post negative reviews but feel our experience could have been avoided if people had just cared a little more. We had 4 mains for dinner. 2 were literally inedible fish dishes. The other 2 were fine. In the future please serve better quality fish. The hake pieces we had were from the tail end and both diners literally ‘gave up’ after really trying hard to eat the flesh. It was a poor experience.

The food here, was amazing. My Girlfriend and I shared the shoulder of Lamb, my daughter (3 years old) had a very nice sausage, chips and beans. The menu was just right and all looked very appetising. The Lamb was cooked to perfection, the accompanying sides (all the trimmings) were just perfect. The portions were also spot on. The service was fantastic, great speed and friendly. Just perfect for a nice Sunday lunch. The pub itself is a proper pub, low ceiling, warming family place. Good choice of drinks. 5 mins way from the hustle and bustle of Central Henley, but worth the trip out. It has a great garden, although today was cold this place is definitely on our list to return to in the summer. It's also Bike friendly, we found an Ebike charging unit and a tool and maintenance facility outside (see photos) such a great idea.

Lovely relaxed lunch with my sisters. Were shown to a cosy dining room with a real fire. Three of us chose the calves liver and it was a real hit. The liver was soft, mash creamy with perfectly cooked veg and a good helping of gravy. We added a sneaky portion of ‘dirty chips’ to share which were amazing. All plates were almost licked clean. Whilst we couldn’t squeeze dessert in our coffees and teas came with gorgeous chunky cinnamon shortbread.. Looking forward to returning. Ps the ‘real’ fire was actually a very good gas one 🤣

We ordered the steak 8onz at £33 (with additional £3 for sauce). The dish was massively disappointing the steak was flavourless and looked like it had come straight from a super market shelf. My better half took me here for a treat, based upon my own (rusty, clearly) recommendation. On my previous visit last year the food was good, but there must have been a chef swap since then, because this lunch was incredibly bland and lacklustre. Lots of positive reviews on here, so maybe we were unlucky - but this was nothing to write home about. In fact it reminded us far too much of our own home cooking, (but worse) which was what we wanted to escape from. Otherwise, what's the point in eating out? I couldn't finish my main; the waitress who was very professional and all round pleasant apologised and asked if we wanted dessert. I took this to mean "on the house" which would have been a decent gesture, especially considering the price (eye watering, based on the quality) - but when we asked for the bill, the dessert had the top billing. No, we didn't argue about it as our waitress was so lovely - as was the dessert, luckily, together with the coffee and beer, so not a total miss. But when you spend £80 on lunch, it'd better be good - and sadly, this just wasn't. The award-winning gastropub just around the corner offers just as expensive food, and rightly so - because it plays in a completely different culinary league.

I am a regular at The Cherry Tree to drink. Not long after the pubs were allowed to open my partner and I went to celebrate a special occasion. My partner is highly vulnerable to covid 19 and has being shielding since March last year. The pub or, in this case, the garden and marquee are constantly packed. We booked a table in the tent for a Wednesday lunchtime and I had asked Dan (landlord) if we could be put in the corner away from people as it was my partners first trip out and around the general public. On arrival we were shown to our table in the corner and found out that the tables behind and beside us had been booked out to be left empty as they know my partners situation. The food has always been excellent at The Cherry Tree but had suddenly stepped up to another level, beautifully presented, fine food. Accoeding to Dan, a shuffle around in the kitchen now sees two highly talented chefs working together to produce food of the highest quality and as much as possible from the pubs vegetable garden. We were made to feel very safe and welcome and a special effort had been made to accommodate a vulnerable person.I can't recommend The Cherry Tree enough. Children are very well catered for too. We had a great afternoon and will be returning to support these guys when they launch their new Thai takeaway menu - We can’t wait!

I really don’t get some of the reviews above. I’m sorry but I disagree... I really haven’t had better in the Henley on Thames area. Here we are in the middle of a pandemic and here is a small privately owned hospitality business, throwing every penny they have at making the place more covid compliant and providing a safe environment & people seem perfectly entitled to knock them.Omelette Arnold Bennet.... what an inspired starter... cooked to fluffy perfection. I’ll not harp on any more.A warm glow in a terrible time. I suggest you eat and drink here if you appreciate tenacity and good food despite the haters.

Everything tasted great and roast cooked to perfection and an issue with a missing order quickly sorted. Good covid measures in place and dog welcome. The only thing was I was still hungry at the end of the meal. Expensive for what you get and so rate it excellent for quality but poor for quantity.

Long lunch for two, outside in the last of the warm summer days. Artisan bread starter, great wine by the glass. Mains. Really good. Burger. Classic well delivered with super nice chips. Best to share chips...avoids quarels. Ham and egg a lunchtime classic. The fresh veg...from the pub garden. Just a joy. Save room for the puddings.

The location is good, the pub‘s interior is pleasing and interesting. Social distancing rules were observed. We visited for lunch. The service was pleasant and helpful. However, we felt the menu was very limited and poor value. It’s a country pub, but there was no lamb or pork on the menu or traditional british winter dishes such as stews or pies. The salmon starter was tiny and the soup too thick. We were not offered water or bread at the table.

I had yet another incredible meal at the Cherry Tree with my father and partner yesterday. We sat out in the new marquee which was lovely and warm, the interior is coming along nicely! As always the staff were friendly, thank you Daniel, and the service was great! The bouillabaisse was recommended, and held up to the recommendation, and the sea bream looked absolutely delicious, I was told by the other half it was. It's always a great trip out to the countryside, a fantastic atmosphere with incredible food! I can't wait to go back next and could not recommend a bite to eat here more!See you all soon

We decided to try this restaurant as its so highly rated and has previously been recommended. I have to say it was very disappointing. Before we had even sat down the waitress was asking us for our drink choice. Less than 5 minutes later we were asked if we were ready to order...... Definitely felt rushed. The menu was disappointing and very uninspiring.. I love trying new foods but this menu was boring and dull. My. Husband had thr roast beef which was severely overcooked, also 1 small parsnip.... Come onThe pudding made us all sit at the table in fits of laughter. We ordered the pavlova at £7.50 we expected a lot more than what we got, see photo for evidence. We will not be returning in a hurry

Really enjoyed our lunch here on a busy Saturday in the garden. This pub has really implemented good Covid restrictions and guidance in the pub with QR scanners on all tables. Felt really relaxed here on our table for 6. We came with friends who had never visited the pub before and they were raving about it. Efficient and very friendly staff. We all thoroughly enjoyed our lunch - food was just excellent! We had a varied selection of dishes, mains and desserts and my 10 year old was heard to claim' Mum, this is the best fish and chips I have ever tasted'. I have to agree. The pub has their own vegetable garden and lots of the produce is used in the meals - tastes fresh and also great to see the chef himself hand picking his choice of vegetables and salad to cook with. Pub has a great garden, tables are spaciously laid out and dog/child friendly. Table service at the moment due to Covid but service was slick and efficient. We had such a great afternoon and the meal was simply delicious. We had no intention of having a dessert but as the mains were so tasty, we all opted for a dessert and coffee! The men in the group said the beer was fantastic! Dan, the landlord has done a great job and it is one of our favourite places to visit!

The four of us had a lovely evening at The Cherry Tree. Fish ‘n’ chips were fab and the steak was cooked to perfection.Great atmosphere and the staff are really friendly, attentive and Covid savvy. Looks like they’re making every effort to deal with the ‘new norm’ with a heated marquee outside, tractors for the kids to play on, their own well managed veg garden and a general ‘Happy Vibe’Highly recommended and will be back to check out the Sunday lunch very soon!HD

Poor choice menu probably created to take advantage of the Covid dining offer! How can a restaurant charge £14.25 for half an aubergine ( which sell for £1 ) filled with tomatoes!Small bowls of chips at £4.95 seemed more than a little excessive.3 Profiteroles for £6.95 continued the poor value offering! All of the above plus the ginger dog begging for food at every table added to the disappointing evening for us and especially for our guests.Used to be such a good restaurant at one time!G.

Had a fabulous lunch at the Cherry Tree today. My steak was perfectly cooked with a delicious peppercorn sauce (and it tasted even better because of the Eat out to help out scheme!) Warm welcome, excellent service and really impressed with their COVID measures.

Not been since lockdown, so booked for Saturday evening early. Starters OK though 'toast' (hardly cooked at all) too thick cut and soft to 'spread' solid pate. Fish and chips...soggy batter on the bottom of the fish and chips.....hard to describe, but not crisp but soft. My wife had the Camembert (share dish) as a main but way too much thick cut bread on the dish which was off putting to look at and way too much to actually eat (she did ask for a small portion and whilst the cheese probably could not be made smaller the bread certainly could have been)Whilst the welcome was excellent, that's where it ended; nobody seemed interested whether we had enjoyed our meal or not nor thanked us for choosing youVery disappointed when on previous visits we have recommended you to friends....not this time.

We’d heard about the Cherry Tree Inn before lockdown, so we’re really looking forward to a cold beer and meal in their garden. Well it didn’t disappoint. The vegetable garden is incredible, and so lovely seeing the chefs in and out, going back to the kitchen with produce they’ve just picked. The home grown tomato salad was next level. I’ve never tasted such sweet, flavoursome tomatoes in my life.Service was with a smile, Covid-19 measures up to scratch, food excellent. Can’t knock this little gem of a pub, and Stoke Row village, with its woodland walks. A great day out.

What a great job Dan and team have done in making the Cherry Tree the hub for the local community. Had a delicious meal this evening. Three of us had burgers with the meat sourced from local farms and veg and salad from the pub garden. And the fish and chips were cooked to perfection. Overall a very relaxed evening served by friendly attentive staff in lovely surroundings.

Back at last shame it was Shaun and Gemma’s night off. Very quiet Wednesday but we were late arrivals. Made welcome, choice of seating, nice to see pichets of wine on the drinks menu. Had tariiflette which was spot on and a good price as well. Made us feel guilty we don’t go here more often! Oh and they accept cash!

A lovely dog friendly pub with friendly staff and great food! A little off the beaten track but well worth the journey. The open fire and historic atmosphere definitely made us feel cozy in bad weather

Really nice warm individual atmosphere. Food was great and just what we needed before a long day the following. We overnight-ed in room 3 which had everything needed. I Managed to run an international meeting at 0600 so wifi was strong. Breakfast next day was really good and ready when we asked for it. Highly recommend The Fat Fox if you want to dodge the corporate bs and feel like a name not a number.

We decided on Sunday morning to try the Red Lion for lunch, and booked a table for 1330. We arrived and were met by efficient staff who were expecting us and offered us a choice of table. Drinks were ordered from a knowledgeable waiter and arrived quickly, mine being a very well-kept pint from tge local Amwell Springs brewery. We both chose beef from an extremely well thought-out menu which again arrived after only a short wait. The meat was beautifully cooked and presented on a large plate with very well cooked greens, carrots and a freshly-made Yorkshire puddings. Sides of cauliflower cheese and roast potatoes were excellent, probably the best roasties I've had, and the horseradish was similarly delicious. We both cleared our plates and the side dishes. Utterly gorgeous, go and see for yourself.

Great spot for a little family lunch. Sandwiches & cakes are delicious, nice surroundings & friendly staff. There’s also a box of books for kids to amuse themselves with. Not inexpensive but lovely for a treat.
