A lovely dog friendly pub with friendly staff and great food! A little off the beaten track but well worth the journey. The open fire and historic atmosphere definitely made us feel cozy in bad weather

A very very good Sunday roast, the beef perfectly cooked, pink, tender, with great flavour. The roast potatoes were crispy on the outside and fluffy in the middle. Nice to see swede and red cabbage as a side, extra gravy not a problem at all. Hawkstone on draught served at the perfect temperature. Kudos to Rob, Sammy, Aimee, Tamica and the team.

My first visit and I have to say the best meal I have eaten in a long time. I thought I'd try the cauliflower as I like to try something different even though I am not a veggie. It was simply delicious in every way...if I could make that I'd definitely become a vegetarian. Can't wait to come back and order it again.

Nice village location and good selection of local beer and international wine. However there is a huge issue with food quality and value. Fish and chips for £21 with a tiny piece of none too fresh hake. I raised will staff who made half hearted excuses. Its a shame as the accompaniments were home made and excellent.

Frozen food straight from a back street supermarket. Ordered the fish and chips tasted and looked like extra large fish finger. Then the bill charged 10% extra for tips.Great place shame about the food .They need to understand they will never be a top quality pub with that type of food (£4 for one Oster) Frozen food.

I don't write many reviews, but felt this experience was too bad not to share. We have heard lots of positive reviews about the pub so decided to book for Easter Monday lunch as one of the few places that was open in the area. We were aware that they were running a reduced menu (advertised as burgers and fried chicken in a basket) but decided to give it a go. What followed was perhaps the worst meal out we have had in the last 10 years. We arrived as a family of 3 shortly after opening to an already chaotic scene with two front of house staff struggling to cope with an already quite busy restaurant. We were shouted to our tabel (3 one on the left) from the chap behind the bar and left to sit for 10 minutes without menu's or a drinks order being offered. Finally drinks were taken and we asked to put through an order of cheese toasty with apple slices from the kids menu for our 11 month year old daughter. A few minutes later after looking over the menu on offer i ordered the chicken and my wife the fish and chips. 40 minutes later we asked the waitress where our daughters cheese toastie might be. She apologised stating that the kitchen was extremely busy as understaffed with only 2 people working, but said she would go and check. after checking the ordering system, she rushed back into the kitchen as it clearly became apparent they had forgotten the order. What appeared from the kitchen some 2/3 minutes later was a sorry attempt, with bread drenched in butter and cold unmelted cheese in the middle of the toastie. This was accompanied by 3 2mm thick slices of apple. We quickly pushed the inedible toastie aside whilst my daughter took all of 1 minute to devour her apple. A further 20 mins later and 1 hour since ordering, our main courses had not arrived. A stern lock of eyes with the waitress sent her scurrying into the kitchen and she appeared shortly with our food. Again what appeared was two further inedible meals. The fried chicken which was meant to be the special of the day was soggy, greasy, cold throughout and lacking any sign that even the most basic of seasoning was used. It really made KFC look like fine dining. The chips that accompanied it raw in the middle. My wife's fish and chips was similarly greasy, with raw chips and missing the mushy pees as advertised. Our entire meal tasted as if it had all been cooked in the same few days old oil that was obviously not at a high enough temperature for deep frying. Unable to eat either we complained to the waiter who seemed unsurprised by our comments and quickly offered to remove the food from the bill. We paid up our remaining balance and made a swift exit. Whilst appreciating staffing can be difficult on a bank holiday, establishments should not open if they are clearly understaffed and unable to offer a decent level of service. Likewise if offering a reduced menu advertised as special then you should be able to execute correctly. A 1 hour wait for 3 different inedible plates of food is unacceptable. We hope to one day try the pub again given its excellent reviews by other patrons, but we foresee that not being for quite a while given how disgusting we all felt after leaving the establishment.

It was my birthday yet an impromptu first visit on the way home. I called to ask if the pub was dog friendly and was told “we are VERY dog friendly”. Was welcomed at the door and despite being busy I was recognised as “you must be the lady who I spoke to earlier”. Arrived late due to traffic and therefore had little time before picking up our children from school. We were recommended the mussels for quickness which were fantastic - huge and so fresh! The staff were so kind and their friendliness felt very genuine, taking an interest in where we were from and my dog. We will be back.

Arrived on a Saturday night for a table of four. The restaurant was being used by a cricket club event so were seated in the bar which was fine. The menu was fairly limited - sons didn’t like anything on the starter menu and not many choices for main. We waited an age for the starters to arrive which was acknowledged by the waitress (we hadn’t complained about the wait) who had said they were coming soon but the kitchen was busy due to the restaurant capacity. Again waited a very long time for the main course. The food was just ‘okay’, nothing amazing. Husbands beer was rather flat. Had to return a glass of wine which had someone else’s lipstick on it. The bill had a service charge added to it which in general, I would rather make a choice of if to tip/how much. Wasn’t going to make a fuss about that as sons would have been embarrassed. Service was polite enough, nothing stand-out. Sadly, wouldn’t return on this experience.

We went for a meal with our grown up daughter who has recently moved nearby and were amazed by the friendliness and hospitality which we received. They only had decaffeinated coffee (a delivery was due the next day) and when we ordered two coffees after dinner we weren’t charged. Such a change from businesses that put profit before customer satisfaction. The meals were home made, delicious and very generous portion sizes. We will be visiting here again when we next visit. Thank you to all concerned for a superb evening.

We booked a table for four on a saturday evening and I was pleasantly surprised at how good the evening went. It started with a pint of local real ale and a good choice was available all at reasonable prices. I had the clam chowder starters which was huge and was very tasty and followed it by a very tasty fish and chips. The others in the party all had lovely food including the chicken kievs. We shared a couple of puddings the local Oxfordshire sponge was amazing. The staff were very attentive and friendly. Restored my faith in the English country pub. Good value overall.

The place to go if want to treat someone (or yourself)! On a fully booked up Thursday evening the staff must have been under pressure, especially with a thirsty cricket crowd arriving after the game! this did not affect the service or standards. I had the Bear burger which is just exceptional with bacon jam and the best chips you can get. The chicken supreme went down a storm on the other side of the table and the kids are always happy with an assortment of board games, fresh food and the comfort and freedom to move around without being made to feel like a nuisance. Thanks to all at The Bear!

We came here unexpectedly, having had to move across the country to avoid a storm that shut down the festival we were attending. We found a campsite and decided to explore Oxfordshire instead. We passed the Bear on the way and decided to book in for dinner. The manager and staff couldn't have been friendlier or more accommodating. The manager was happy to spend time with us chatting about the food and where it all came from (it's predominantly locally sourced). (I also heard him helping a group of ladies behind us who had a number of dietary requirements - he managed to accommodate them all without any trouble). We both ordered a main course and my partner ordered a dessert. Everything was home made from scratch and utterly delicious, also the portion sizes were good without being overwhelming, allowing for a starter (if required) and dessert without making you feel too full. The dessert was an old local recipe; Hollygog pudding- slightly salty sponge soaked in milk and served with delicious egg custard. All in all (along with a couple of pints of well kept ale) it was a super experience and I would recommend anyone to enjoy a meal and a drink at the Bear!

We’ve been to The Bear many times over the years and we’ve visited a couple of times, recently. I believe that it has, fairly recently, changed hands. We only go for Sunday roast, and The Bear is excellent; Excellent service and excellent food. On our first visit, service was a little slow and staff were apologetic and there was no hesitation to offer complimentary wine, whist we waited. On our second visit, my Yorkshire pudding was a disaster and the staff were, clearly, mortified that something had gone wrong. The above is not a criticism, just an observation that The Bear want to excel at what they’re doing. We’ll definitely be back many more times.

I have to say, I’m always sceptical when I read a review for a restaurant that has received a lot of hype. But, the Bear did not disappoint!! The food, service and drinks were nothing short of phenomenal! The scotch egg was on another level, the scratching a were more crackling but either way some of the best I’ve had. The chips were out of this world. The burger and steak were melt in the mouth, prawns were amazing (and I grew up in a family of fishmongers). The house made apple gin…. Wow! We came for my fiancés birthday and they even gave us a glass of Prosecco on the house to celebrate. I often hold back on giving a “perfect rating”, however, well done the team at the Bear- 10/10!! We ate here mid week with friends and were disppointed having previously read the reviews. First impressions were not good as the state of the entrance doors were appalling and obviously had not been cleaned in a very long time & badly needed a coat or two of varnish. Likewise the windows & windowsill next to where we sat were so dirty that I found myself wondering what the kitchen was like. We arrived at 12:15 pm and appeared to be the first to order lunch but still had quite a long wait which didn't really matter as we were with friends and were not in a hurry. The food was moderate, nothing exceptional. Three ordered fish, chips & peas; each plate having at least half a pound of peas (no exageration) it would have been laughable had it not been so ridiculous. We did comment to the waitress 2 or 3 times about this but it seemed unimportant to her.The fish was huge & would have served 2 people but was difficult to deal with because of the amount of peas on the plate! I had the goat's cheese tart with a side serving of chips of which I only ate a few as they did not look nice & tasted stale as though they were the previous day's heated up. The tart was quite nice but the pastry crust was overcooked. I cannot understand why so many establishments rate themselves good enough to charge over the odds for basic food. I will not be going back.

I came here with a friend and we had two of the build your own burgers, they were brilliant! The burger itself was one of the best I have ever tried and the different fillings you could add in is a wonderful idea, food is a good price for what you get, and we were served by a lovely young lady with blonde hair who was one of the best waitresses we have ever had. Would recommend and defiantly go back!

We wanted to celebrate a diamond wedding anniversary so our guests had various demands. The landlord, Patrick was extremely helpful before the day dealing efficiently with our requests for arranging the room and our catering requests. On the day his daughter Lucy and their staff continued being quietly and efficiently helpful.

Service so poor even though pub half empty. Starters were dry (white bait),cheese platter , quiche ok but the rest wasn't worth eating. Mains were lamb, so fatty and undercooked , unedible, sent back.Crumble pie very hard to eat again left, also had some thing not edible in it , was shown to staff and complaints were made .After some haggling, we paid for drinks only. Very dissapointing, always was the place to eat.

We were looking for somewhere in the area to meet up as a family to celebrate my sister's 50th; none of us are local. My dad and I visited The Bear at Home a week ago for Saturday lunch - we were warmly welcomed and had lovely baguettes and chips with so much food that neither of us needed to cook in the evening. Last night 7 of us came back for my sister's Birthday - we had a lovely evening, the food was excellent (4 of us tried a lamb special, 2 had steak and chips and my niece had the burger) with absolutely incredible deserts. The atmosphere is relaxed and all the staff were friendly. If we're in the area again we'd certainly go back. Thank you.

Called in for lunch at the weekend and decided to try the special salad of the week, octopus and chorizo. Sat outside on the decking in the sunshine looking over the park and cricket pitch we sipped our drinks and waited for our food. The three of us ordered different meals and they arrived after a short wait and we were all pleased with our choices. The ham, egg and chips were substantial and tasty, the scampi and homemade tartar sauce was gobbled up and my salad was brilliant. A large green salad with beetroot and chorizo and baby octopus and a lovely dressing. Very tasty and satisfying, wanted to try the new puddings but couldn't fit it in. We have eaten here several times and the frequently changing menu ensures we are never bored with the food and always look forward to trying the new specials. Another great visit, thanks very much.

We were meeting somewhere in the middle of Bath and Essex and chose this pub for a catchup and lunch on Saturday. It was the perfect choice!!! They let us in a little early (before they opened) so we could use the loos after the long drive. We had booked a table but advised them the time may change due to our journeys. We ended up sitting outside over looking the cricket pitch and park and we chose to eat there too. Nothing was too much trouble. The staff were all very friendly and the food was fantastic!!! The pub itself is old fashioned but in a good way - there’s load of charm. We loved our day here and want to meet here again.

Called here as a treat for my wife’s birthday lunch and what a let-down. The worn and faded exterior décor should have been a warning of what was to come.

Visited for Sunday lunch to celebrate family birthdays. The welcome was warm and the staff pleasant and efficient. The menu is limited on a Sunday but we all found something we liked and the food was nicely presented, generous portions and very tasty. It’s a dog friendly venue with a park just out the back which meant we could take Paddi for a quick stretch of the paws before we went in to eat. We were visiting son & partner who live locally but we all agreed it was a pub to come back to especially on a warm summer evening. May be when the cricket/ beer is on

Several months ago I'd planned a family get together as a surprise for my Brothers 80th Birthday. Due to unforeseen circumstances I had to cancel it. With problems resolved a few weeks later, we realised we could still go ahead and chose the “Bear at Home, North Moreton” having had several excellent meals there previously.

We had a small family get together/ celebration meal here, the dog was welcome too. Relaxed and friendly atmosphere, great service and lovely food. One of the best chocolate mousses I’ve had in a long time. Sunday lunch menu so less choices than another weekday but still a good selection of food served in filling portions.

Back at last shame it was Shaun and Gemma’s night off. Very quiet Wednesday but we were late arrivals. Made welcome, choice of seating, nice to see pichets of wine on the drinks menu. Had tariiflette which was spot on and a good price as well. Made us feel guilty we don’t go here more often! Oh and they accept cash!

Great spot for a little family lunch. Sandwiches & cakes are delicious, nice surroundings & friendly staff. There’s also a box of books for kids to amuse themselves with. Not inexpensive but lovely for a treat.

Really nice warm individual atmosphere. Food was great and just what we needed before a long day the following. We overnight-ed in room 3 which had everything needed. I Managed to run an international meeting at 0600 so wifi was strong. Breakfast next day was really good and ready when we asked for it. Highly recommend The Fat Fox if you want to dodge the corporate bs and feel like a name not a number.

We decided on Sunday morning to try the Red Lion for lunch, and booked a table for 1330. We arrived and were met by efficient staff who were expecting us and offered us a choice of table. Drinks were ordered from a knowledgeable waiter and arrived quickly, mine being a very well-kept pint from tge local Amwell Springs brewery. We both chose beef from an extremely well thought-out menu which again arrived after only a short wait. The meat was beautifully cooked and presented on a large plate with very well cooked greens, carrots and a freshly-made Yorkshire puddings. Sides of cauliflower cheese and roast potatoes were excellent, probably the best roasties I've had, and the horseradish was similarly delicious. We both cleared our plates and the side dishes. Utterly gorgeous, go and see for yourself.

Having driven past for 20 years I finally took heed of the positive reviews and visited for a quick business lunch. We will not return. Nice building, pleasant layout. Cold reception from a disinterested young man in tracksuit at the bar, hardly bursting at the seems with the good and great of Henley, this was a very down market experience. Pie and mash with gravy out of a tin did nothing to improve the atmosphere.
