Absolutely amazing little place for pure and authentic south Indian food in Basingstoke. We had an amazing variety of Dosa and Utthapam and cleaned the pallets with nice and strong authentic filter coffee. Definitely going again if visiting Basingstoke.

We booked a table for 7pm tonight 3rd Sept 2024. I was waiting outside for my friend and a female member of staff kept coming out to check what I was doing. I smiled but she didn't smile but just went back in. My friend arrived and we went in at 6.59pm. The same woman rushed over and said ' we don't open until 7'! I said" well it's one minute to, can we sit down, I've booked a table for 7" She was very unfriendly. Then a male member of staff said 'ok ... just sit down but your food will be a while because the kitchen isnt ready'. We just got up and left at that point and found somewhere welcoming to have a meal. Not sure I've ever felt so unwelcome in a restaurant before.

Its a shame that this is the Basingstoke offering of this restaurant. The Fleet one is so lovely and this one is disappointing.

We celebrated our anniversary at the Chennai Express restaurant last night, and it was an exceptional experience from start to finish. Decent dosa restaurant around Basingstoke. Sambar was really good and thick gravy with nice flavours. Idly was fresh and soft and complemented well with sambar and chutney. We felt nadan kozhi curry was maybe little too sweet for our taste, but it definitely had good flavours.

Priyanka served us today and her service was excellent. We will visit again.

Great south asian food and good service too. I got the chole bhatura which was fried bread and chickpea curry and it was very tasty. My family also enjoyed the masala dosa and the thali platter. Really recommend this place for food, it was also very good value for money.

Lovely early evening dinner here. Service great and food really good. Vegatarian as well as carnivores enjoyed the food. Beer not cheap, so try not to guzzle it like we did!

It was easily one of the best indian cuisine I’ve had outside of India. The Chicken Chettinad was the highlight of the entire menu that we ordered. Aashirvaad gave us good suggestions and was very hospitable. Great service and food. Will definitely visit again

Love the food here. Loads of vegan options. A vegan menu too. Do book for a Friday night as it’s limited seating. My favourite dishes are the Masala Dosa, and the cauliflower Manchurian. Lime soda is nice too; sweet or salted.

Had excellent food and service from Ash in a party of 14. Even with the numbers of people we had in our group, the service was prompt, the food well cooked and very enjoyable. Got a little warm in there, they try their best though to cool with a portable AC unit but we're fine with us getting up and standing outside to cool down between dishes. Will definitely be returning to try more off the menu.

Popped in for a little lunch and found that it was a super authentic, friendly place with lush food, my friend and I had some korma and fish curry, divine flavour, prompt service and thanks for the advice on the menu and for being so helpful Srinu.

All I can say is wow! The food was fantastic best curry I've had in a long time. The restaurant is simple, clean and interesting. We were looked after by Srinu who made some great food recommendations. Will definitely be back.....

I overheard locals saying how busy this restaurant is, in other words how popular it is. Brilliant food, staff and atmosphere. Can’t wait to come back, and I’d recommend 100%.

Good evening sir/ma’am, Myself alish sunwar from wales, today we visited Chennai express in Basingstoke. We were being assisted and served by Priyanka. Amazing customer service and food was on point. I would recommend this place to all and it is one of the best. Amazing chill chips dosha and all the foods.

We stumbled upon this restaurant on a recent trip to Basingstoke. We were here on Saturday evening, 8th July for dinner. Service was brilliant from every member of staff we came across. We ordered onion pakora, medhu vada, home style fish curry and rice, masala dosa and ras malai for food. All dishes had big portions and tasted good. The drinks were also perfect, especially the nannari sharbat and lime soda. We will definitely visit again when we're back in Basingstoke, and certainly recommend to those in the area.

This restaurant is a hidden gem and one of the best South Indian places we’ve tried around the area. A simple and focused menu with some really good thali options. Although we didn’t try the dosas, the thali and samosa chat were delicious. Each of the vegetables had a distinct flavor and taste, even the meduvada in the thali was crispy. Highly recommended and would definitely visit again.

Since 2019, Chennai express is one of my fav restaurant to have Indian food. Specially, home style chicken/lamp curry, lamchop, Naan, fried rice, Chiken Lalipop, appolo fish are on the top. I would definitely recommend people to visit restaurant. Regarding environment, it is very clear and well organised. Lovely staff member and they do prepare food according to customer preference. Regarding staff member. I would also like to commend priyanka for her outstanding performance during my recent dining experience at the restaurant. Her warm and welcoming gesture made me feel valued as a customer right from the moment I walked in. She was incredibly attentive, ensuring that my orders were taken promptly and that I had everything I needed throughout the meal. Tasted the new menu, had Aam panna which was very refreshing. Sreenu was very friendly and served us well. Had an amazing lunch. Highly recommend south indian food here. The tomato chutney especially was very authentic and tasty.

RUDE STAFF !!! Myself and my friends had our lunch from here today.The food was okayish but the service of the staff was unacceptable. We had to wait for a long time for the bills even when there wasn't any crowd in the restaurant. I saw him bend before "some" customers, politely bringing them their bills with the card machine. For me, he just slid the bill on the table and left without eye contact. I had to pay the bill on the counter. Even when I was paying my bill, he just accepted my payment and never said a "thank you" or any kind of words that we see in any other restaurant. Such rude staff, never will I set foot in that restaurant again.

I had my dinner today and the food was delicious. This girl called Priyanka was very kind and outstanding in her field of work. Overally the visit was excellent and I will come again next time too.

One of my favourite restaurants in Basingstoke! Truly authentic Indian food, the food is incredible and so flavoursome. The team are super friendly and attentive, always so kind and helpful. The atmosphere inside the restaurant is lovely, with beautiful decor and music. Onion pakora, chicken 65 and the south special chettinad are top favourites. A real gem, highly recommend!

Being a high grade Coeliac I am never disappointed with this restaurant. I highly recommend the food, it's amazing and the service is fantastic. Waiters listen and cater to your needs making sure all is ok. To avoid disappointment you need to reserve your seats.

We had the masala dosa and it was worth the money. Crispy dosa, tasty masala and even the chutney was commendable. Two people can share a dosa cos it was that big. Highly recommend.

One of the best curry houses I’ve been to in the local area….the food was incredible, service excellent and atmosphere/setting great (certainly not your usual curry house). In terms of cost, it’s not cheap, but where isn’t now and you get what you pay for. Would happily return. One tip - be sure to book , this place doesn’t have many seats and gets very busy. UPDATE: have just been again and food was great again, but it’s even more expensive 🤦‍♂️

The staff go above and beyond, are super attentive and happy to help. All meals were explained. The food was INCREDIBLE. I cannot express enough how much I enjoyed it. The atmosphere is calm, warm and welcoming and the smell of the food just makes it even more enticing. The lights inside make the ambience lovely to be in. Please get the coconut ice cream, it's made fresh and is probably the best ice cream I've ever tasted. Heavily recommend! THANKS ASH!
