Brilliant!!! If you're heading to Queenstown, add this to your bucket list. If you like taking photos, then you'll need a good camera, BUT in saying that, no camera can capture the sheer magnificence of Piopiotahi. Its beauty is unparalleled. If you're lucky, you'll see yellow crested penguins, bottlenose dolphins, and fur seals. There are plenty of Kea on the way. Beware; they will try to pick off the stripping/rubber seals on your car doors, and they get onto the roof and don't fly off when you shoo them. They're awesome though, not shy at all.

Milford Sound is a glacial terrain located in the Southwestern Fiordland National Park on the South Island of New Zealand. It was listed as a World Heritage Site in 1990. Bottlenose dolphins, Fiordland penguins, and seals can also be seen in the fjord. There are many aquatic creatures, especially at Seal Point, where a large number of young seals often gather. A must-visit attraction in the South Island.

It's a wonderful tourist destination. I highly recommend visiting when you visit New Zealand. However, please note the following points. ・There is a lot of rain, so we recommend preparations. ・During the spring and winter seasons, roads may be closed due to accumulated snow. ・Please prepare insect repellent. ・The deck of the ship is slippery, so we recommend wearing non-slip shoes. We also recommend small ships for tours rather than large ships. You can get close to the shore and see penguins and sea lions, and if you're lucky you might even see dolphins.

This is a must-see spot when you come to New Zealand. It gives you a sense of scale and delicate nature that cannot be conveyed in photos. I have seen many kinds of nature in the past, Coco and the Grand Canyon are the only places I was so moved by. Even though I don't have much interest in natural scenery, I was moved by it, so I'm sure most people would be glad to have seen this scenery in their lifetime.

So overhyped/overrated and a real tourist trap! We visited Milford Sound fully expecting something magnificent/out of this world gorgeous, but we were quite disappointed with what met our eyes. The view was pleasant, but it’s nothing like the magnificent views we’ve experienced in Canada and the US (more specifically Alaska). Oh, and not to forget those horrid sandflies - they nearly ate us alive and left us with itchy scars for weeks! One thing is for sure, New Zealand really knows how to overhype their country, but very disappointing to tourists who have seen and experienced better.

Milford Sound is a Fiordland (narrow inlet of the sea between cliffs or steep slopes ) in the southwest of New Zealand’s South Island around 290 KMs from Queenstown. Milford Sound runs @ 15 kilometers inland from the Tasman Sea . We traveled to the point where the waters of Milford Sound meet the Tasman Sea however hard to spot where the exact entrance of the sea to the fiord is.

Milford Sound (Māori: Piopiotahi, officially gazetted as Milford Sound/Piopiotahi) is a fiord in the south west of New Zealand's South Island within Fiordland National Park, Piopiotahi (Milford Sound) Marine Reserve, and the Te Wahipounamu World Heritage site. It has been judged the world's top travel destination in an international survey (the 2008 Travellers' Choice Destinations Awards by TripAdvisor)[ and is acclaimed as New Zealand's most famous tourist destination. Rudyard Kipling called it the eighth Wonder of the World. The fiord is most commonly accessed via road (State Highway 94) by tour coach, with the road terminating at a small village also called Milford Sound. Milford Sound was initially overlooked by European explorers because its narrow entry did not appear to lead into such large interior bays. Sailing ship captains such as James Cook, who bypassed Milford Sound on his journeys for just this reason, also feared venturing too close to the steep mountainsides, afraid that wind conditions would prevent escape. The fiord was a playground for local Māori who had acquired a large amount of local marine knowledge including tidal patterns and fish feeding patterns over generations before European arrival. The fiord remained undiscovered by Europeans until Captain John Grono discovered it c.1812 and named it Milford Haven after his homeland in Wales. Captain John Lort Stokes later renamed Milford Haven as Milford Sound.Following the passage of the Ngāi Tahu Claims Settlement Act 1998, the name of the fiord was officially altered to Milford Sound / Piopiotahi. While Fiordland as such remained one of the least-explored areas of New Zealand up to the 20th century, Milford Sound's natural beauty soon attracted national and international renown, and led to the discovery of the McKinnon Pass in 1888, soon to become a part of the new Milford Track, an early walking tourism trail. In the same year, the low watershed saddle between the Hollyford River and the Cleddau River was discovered, where the Homer Tunnel was to be developed about sixty years later to provide road access. As of the 2006 census, just 120 people lived in Milford Sound, most of them working in tourism or conservation. Milford Sound, located in the Fiordland National Park of New Zealand, is often regarded as one of the most stunning natural attractions in the world. Carved by glaciers during the ice ages, this breathtaking fiord is surrounded by majestic peaks, cascading waterfalls, and lush rainforests. The serene beauty of Milford Sound is best experienced through boat cruises, which offer close-up views of the dramatic cliffs and marine wildlife, including seals, penguins, and dolphins. We all know this place is amazing. Here are a few things that we should know while visiting this place... Please arrive a bit early based on weather and roadworks etc. When we visited in Oct 23, Southern Discoveries sent us an email asking to allow for 5.5 hours from Queenstown and 2.5 from Te Anau, however, we did not face any roadworks and delays all the way from Queenstown and google was spot on... still arriving early is safer. Plenty of Paid Parking is available at $10 per hour before 3 pm and $5 per hour after 3pm. Alternatively, if you want to walk an extra 15 minutes you can park at the deepwater basin park for free (limited space). Its a 10 minute walk from the car park to the cruise terminal. You can drive down all the way to the terminal if you have kids or elderly people but you can't park there.. only buses are allowed. Drop off others right outside the terminal and drive back to the car park and you do the walk yourself. We booked with mitre peak cruise in Feb 23 and Southern Discoveries in Oct 23, with the latter being the larger of the two and both had complimentary coffee on board. No snacks on the mitre peak cruise... your only option for food/ snacks is at the Cafe near the car park/ information center. The southern Discoveries cruise had a bar serving beer and other drinks as well as some snacks and a lunch buffet for those who booked the lunch package. There are restrooms available both inside and outside the cafe/information center as well as in the cruise terminal. There is a petrol pump/ servo for petrol and diesel near the car park (pictures are from my visit in Feb 23, unleaded 91 was around 3.10 in Oct 23). The cheapest fuel available is either Te Anau or just before Te Anau. This is one of those places where you would want it to rain before you visit... thousands of waterfalls come alive when it does! Get your hat, sunscreen and even a rain coat if you wish to get drenched under the waterfall when the cruise takes you right under one!

Remarkable, spectacular, sensational. I cannot recommend this place enough, this is definitely the highlight of our New Zealand South Island trip! In the midst of our busy lifestyles, this is the best way to relax your mind and embrace the mother of nature. We were very lucky to be able to catch the cruise on such a beautiful day. We saw seals unfortunately didn’t get to see penguins and dolphins. One of the little seals put on a show for us by twisting in and out of the water chasing a little fish. We booked our cruise via Pure Milford. We decided to drive to Te Anau and catch the bus through Fiordland national park instead of driving all the way from Queenstown. It is 4 hours away from Queenstown, I recommend booking a tour bus because you wouldn’t want to be yawning whilst enjoying these breathtaking views!

The scenery is beautiful. If you have already lined up other canyons in your itinerary, I would suggest that you don’t need to come again. On the one hand, the distance is too far, and on the other hand, there are too many beautiful scenery in New Zealand. You can make a choice, but it is a bit similar. If you expect to see the majestic waterfall, you will be disappointed. The waterfall is small but beautiful, but the captain will drive the boat close to the largest waterfall so that guests can enjoy the feeling of being sprayed. During the voyage, we happened to see a family of dolphins coming out to feed and play when we were near the Tasman Sea. The captain said that we were lucky to see such a scene that day. We passed a seal rock on the way, but we didn’t see any seals perching on it that day.

1. People who drive too slowly must pull over and give way to fast cars so as not to affect other people’s boat schedules. 2. The scenery along the road will not be inferior to the scenery on the boat, and many points are relatively more spectacular. 3. The weather is unpredictable. It may be so thick that you can’t see anything after getting on the boat, so just order some food and enjoy it! 4. Bring rain gear and raincoat 5. Bring anti-sand fly spray, there are still many in Badu, and they are also available on the boat. 6. The free parking lot takes 30 minutes to walk 7. The stone road in the water is really beautiful, you must go 8. Choose a boat with large glass

NZ🇳🇿West coast of the South Island📍 I went to World Heritage Site Milford Sound / Piopiotahi 🚙 Approximately 2 hours drive from Te Anau! Everyone speeds up to 100km/h and lets it fly 🐝 People in NZ have a relaxed lifestyle, but they drive very fast lol. The best part is that you can enjoy the magnificent scenery on the way to Milford Sound. I stopped the car many times and enjoyed the scenery 🦥 Traveling without worrying about time is truly a luxury~🦋🩵 When we arrived at Milford Sound, there were a lot of tourists! DONE your cruise ship reservation now🎫 And it was miraculously sunny ☀️☀️☀️ You can clearly see that the mountains are steep! ! ! After all, according to statistics, it rains 182 days in an average year in Milford Sound, so we're really lucky lol (It was raining when I came a few days ago, so that's why I came back! However, Milford Sound in the rain was so mysterious that a dragon 🐉 seemed to come out, and it felt like a secret place in this world.) So the cruise starts 🚢 A landform formed when glacier meltwater and seawater enter rocky mountains carved by the advancing and retreating glaciers. It has its own unique nature! What's more, seawater and freshwater form layers in the ocean, creating a very rare ecosystem! Apparently, the sun's rays don't penetrate below the layer, so the environment is pitch black and feels like the deep sea. Even though it is not deep sea, it seems that many deep sea fish and black corals 🪸 live here! and From the cruise ship, you can enjoy the breathtaking views of the mountains and cliffs🥹 Miter Peak is the most famous mountain in Milford Sound, at an altitude of 1800m! It's said to be the second highest in the world in terms of height visible from sea level 😳😳😳 That's amazing! ! ! ! Also, in this area where there is a lot of rain, you can see many impressive waterfalls, but there are only two that can be seen permanently! ! Moreover, these two waterfalls are also made from melting snow from glaciers, so if the glaciers completely melt, you might not be able to see them. Time to feel the depth of nature while on a cruise. It feels like humans are interfering with nature, and it seems to be swallowing us up🐲 Milford Sound is highly recommended, rain or shine ☺️ Please come and visit us at least once 🦭

Great scenery away from the tourist hubs. Probably the best coffee I’ve had in NZ so far, at the Kiosk. Unfortunately, it felt like a tourist trap, with parking at $10 p/h (plus transaction fee), very few walks available through areas that had little to no wildlife the day I was there - the only real option was the cruise, which also required at least 3 hours of parking (1.75hr cruise, plus 0.5hr check in, plus walk from carpark). I really enjoyed the areas on the drive between Milford Sound and Te Anau.

Milford Sound is approximately 16km long. At some places the fiord is up to 400m deep! A must-see place at New Zealand that will just take your breath away. I recommend to book your boat ride enough of time in advance, so you secure your place and don't stress out at the last minute. The boat ride takes about 2 hours and it's commented ride with a few stops at the waterfalls or the rocks with seals at the place. Count with a long driving time to get to the place and then to get back. So if you travel from Queenstown, leave early in the morning. There is a very lovely flower field on the way to the place/back that I recommend to stop at and take a few photos with the flowers. Beautiful place, even more surreal if you are lucky with the weather. Got lucky spotting some seals lazing on the rocks. The drive to get there is beautiful, crossing some great viewpoints.

If you’re happy to drive for about 1.5 hours from Te Anau and understand the weather may change (like the adult you are) then it’s one of the most beautiful places on the planet. The drive is also amazing so don’t know why you wouldn’t want to do it! We arrived in the morning about 9:30am so there were less people arriving on tour buses. If you do your research before visiting you’ll know there’s a free car park about a 15 minute walk away from the cafe which is then about another 10 minute walk away from the cruise terminal. So no need to pay the $10/ph parking to be slightly closer. There is only one café and the cruise terminal, but- as there should be! It’s a nature reserve, so doesn’t need 10 different cafés/shops. The place itself is unlike anywhere I’ve been before. It’s beautiful, come rain or shine the scale of the landscape is so humbling. We arrived when it was covered in cloud which was burnt off by the midday sun so saw it in the sun too, both are awesome. It hadn’t rained for a while too and there are still massive waterfalls (some people think the rain produces all the waterfalls). Ignore all the other reviews complaining about the amount of people and the price of parking they just didn’t research enough before going :) P.S.- Take bug spray for the sandflies!

Great place to visit. Especially when weather is great. Best is when you have had rain the day before as there will be many waterfalls

I was lucky with the weather and still think it's the biggest disappointment of the south island! 125 nzd + 30 nzd parking....+long drive. For a totally boring cruise! Overhyped place

Beautiful place BUT careful.. 2 to 3 hours to get there from the last village. There is only 1 campsite which is always fully booked. No markets, no food, no place to stay. The tunnel close at 6pm so careful or you will stay there stucked for 1 night

Very impressive, the approx. 2 hour drive from Te Anau is worth it. As soon as you come out of the tunnel you are rewarded with a spectacular view. The fjord is beautiful, waterfalls everywhere, great nature.

There are a few waterfalls at Milford sound. We took cruise to watch them. People got wet when cruise was parking near waterfalls. Everyone got fun especially the kids even it’s cold weather now.

Picture prefect for viewing the mountains, but not so good for the waterfalls, best days are when it is or has been raining. Enjoyable trip on the Sound. With many sights to see including seals, and dolphins and waterfalls. We self drove in and stopped at places of interest that the tour busses didn't stop at. Advised to book early to get the best deals. Take your own food and drink as Milford has limited options. Parking is limited so arrive early, cost is $10 per hour. Free parking is available but is limited and is a 30 minute walk to the cruise dock.

Visiting Milford Sound, especially during a heavy rain, is an experience of a lifetime. The rain transforms the landscape into a mystical wonderland, with waterfalls cascading dramatically from the cliffs, creating a breathtaking panorama. The mist and the lush greenery add a surreal quality to the already stunning scenery. The cruise was comfortable and the guides were knowledgeable, enhancing the experience with interesting facts and stories. Despite the rain, or perhaps because of it, the beauty of Milford Sound was magnified, leaving an indelible impression. Truly a five-star, unforgettable adventure!

Very beautiful place!!! We took the Southern Discoveries cruise and I recommend it. We went on a rainy day which helped us see many waterfalls but on the other hand due to the weather we couldn't do the observatory (keep this in mind if you want to see it since if you can't do it that day they will refund your money and if you want to see it you must buy another cruise ticket).

My first time ever travelling to New Zealand and Milford Sound was honestly breathtaking. It was such a lovely, sunny day I got to experience. Even got to see some NZ seals sun baking in the sun.

You don’t need me to tell you to do the Milford sound cruise. It is one of the highlights of NZ. I know everyone says to go when it’s raining, but I went on a perfect sunny day and I’d recommend that if you can swing it. Just utterly beautiful. You must do this when in NZ.

How this place is open still is beyond me. Ordered a basic order, chicken balls, egg fried rice, and shredded chilli beef. Egg fried rice partially burned and bland. No brown tint, just burn marks and overdone egg. Chicken balls were pink in the middle, and shredded chili beef had about as much chili in as rainwater. On top of that, 2 hours to arrive. Safe to say I never ordered from there again.

Awful and expensive! I massively regret this life decision on missing the 33 bus! I’m £11 worse off for 2 drinks that weren’t even average, have to order on a screen and the staff preparing the drinks are devoid of curtesy or any emotion. Over £5 for an iced tea, order large for what is a regular in any other coffee shop. You’ll also have to guess it’s your order that’s ready as despite being given a number by the order screen the staff will just dump it on the counter and say absolutely nothing !
